The Value Of Reading To Kids Is Now Visible Recent studies from the Reading & Literacy Discovery Center of Cincinnati’s Children’s Hospital were the first provide neurobiological evidence of the potential benefits of reading to children age five and younger and the potential detriments of screen time on the development of such youngsters’ brains.

Images released with the study indicated substantial growth in organized white matter in the language and literacy areas of the brains of children who were read to during the highly formative first five years of their lives. That’s important, as the study noted that white matter is comprised of fibers

that form connections between brain cells and the nervous system.

Increasing and organizing that white matter, which reading to youngsters facilitates, increases the brain’s functionality and ability to learn.

While the study noted the value of reading to children age five and younger, it also showed how children who spent an average of two hours a day playing on screens were adversely affected by that behavior. In images of such children’s brains, white matter was considerably underdeveloped and disorganized, which can contribute to slow processing and learning difficulties.

Economic Opportunity Council Of Suffolk, Inc. Receives Federal Funding To Help Low Income Suffolk Residents The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc. (EOC of Suffolk) has received $1.7 million in federal funds to provide financial assistance to individuals and families facing economic hardships arising from COVID-19related disruptions.

The funds are being made available to eligible Suffolk County residents

who have either lost their jobs, became temporarily unemployed, or faced financial difficulties because of the pandemic.

The funds originate from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act – commonly known as the CARES Act – which is providing $41 billion in funding to supplement the nationwide

Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) program.

Signed into law on March 27, the relief program aims to address the consequences of increased unemployment and economic disruption resulting from the COVID-19 virus.

“The Coronavirus pandemic has triggered the most damaging economic crisis America has faced

in some 80 years,” said Adrian Fassett, CEO of EOC of Suffolk. “During this difficult period, these federal funds will help our organization fulfill our mission of promoting the economic self-sufficiency of Suffolk County residents.”

An applicant’s eligible expenses can include food, funeral costs, rental expenses, broker fees,

utility expenses, medical expenses, retraining expenses, clothing, bedding, toiletries, and other expenses. Household income cannot exceed 200 percent of poverty guidelines.

The determination of financial eligibility for CARES assistance does not factor in an applicant’s supplemental

unemployment payments, stimulus payments, or other relief funding an individual has already received or is currently receiving.

Eighth grade students from Grand Avenue and Merrick Avenue middle schools in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District participated in staggered drives through moving up celebrations on June 12.

School administrators, staff and teachers donning school colors lined the decorated parking lot as carloads of families made their way around the grounds.

At Grand Avenue, Principal Carlo Conte and Assistant Principal Christopher Riccardi

handed out diplomas and other awards.

“Although the typical ceremony could not take place, we were committed to creating a drivethrough experience that was filled with the Grand CARES spirit and serves as a celebration of our students’ time at Grand Avenue,” said Conte.

At Merrick Avenue, Principal Katelyn Dunn was joined by Assistant Principals Rich Aceste and Kate Caporusso to distribute diplomas and certificates.

“Our Merrick Avenue

family was dotted along the route to cheer and support students,” added Dunn.

“We wanted to convey the spirit of black and gold as our eighth graders came through.”

DJs pumped up the crowds and backdrops with school logos were also provided for solo student portraits.

The drive throughs were recorded and will be edited together with prerecorded speeches and e-mailed to all families as one ceremony.

New York Health Hosts Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony Welcoming Family Practice Physician, Dr. Seodat Seodat navigated his life so that he could become a doctor for everyone. “My journey began as a nurse and a pharmacist dispenser before traveling to New York to earn my degree in medicine.”

Dr. Seodat received a Bachelor of Science with a Minor in Healthcare Administration at St. Joseph’s College.

He attended La Universidad Tecnológica De Santiago where he received his Doctor of Medicine.

Following his MD, he completed his residency and served as Chief Resident at Southside Hospital. He continued at Southside as Assistant Director of their residency program where he educated residents while maintaining patient care and completing medical procedures.

Working alongside him for the past two years is Adult-Geri Nurse Practitioner, Catrina Grefe, MS, RN-BC, AGNP-C. As a Nurse Practitioner, Catrina manages the patient’s overall care, prescribing medications and treatments, conducting and interpreting diagnostic

tests, and treating both acute and chronic conditions. Catrina assists in performing procedures and educating patients on positive health-promoting lifestyle choices and disease, injury, and illness prevention. Catrina is excited to be joining NY Health with Dr. Seodat. “Patients can feel confident with me as their practitioner, and I am eager to deliver high-quality care to patients on the East End,” she said.

Equity First Foundation (EFF) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located here on Long Island. Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Although the details of financial markets may not be necessary for everyone, a good understanding of everyday finances is needed to ensure your home, bank account and additional assets are protected as you go about your life.

This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community. They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. EFF provides financial education, literacy and best practices at low or no cost to individuals and groups from primary school through retirement and including life events.

Rhonda Klch, Executive Director of the Equity First Foundation has taken all necessary steps to get out of her comfort zone and attack COVID with her resources. As a women entrepreneur, she used her relationships, social media and community to power through this current pandemic.

In March of 2020, when the pandemic really started to hit hard, Rhonda, along with the assistance of her board members, united to find solutions for the community despite what was going on. Rhonda believed that even though EFF programs may be on hold, that did not mean the people of the community did not still need answers and help. She has worked endless hours for the sake of the families that need assistance and need a voice.

Since the pandemic Rhonda has either spearheaded or collaborated in many projects to help our community out. Here is an example of just a few: The Grab & Go 3,000 Event in Patchogue: Rhonda collaborated with business owner of local restaurant to provide over 3,000 hot meals to families in need.

Grab & Go Breakfast in Rocky Point: EFF collaborated with local bagel store owner, Edward Henry of Strathmore bagels and a few

sponsors, to give-away over 300 breakfasts to families in need.

6 Week Marathon: March 29th was the beginning of a 6 week marathon of assisting front line workers with food. EFF and Rhonda did a Go Fund Me with local bagel store owner, Edward Henry to supply St. Charles, Mather and Stony Brook Hospital food every night.

PPE Equipment Fundraiser: EFF collaborated with several Allstate Insurance offices to raise funds for PPE equipment. Over 2,000 masks were delivered to various hospitals, senior centers, nursing homes and fire districts.

Although EFF has switched their programs from in person to virtual, they have been well received. They continue to offer free financial counseling and outreach resources for numerous families on Long Island.
