The North Bellmore School District said goodbye to 294 students who graduated from the five elementary schools on June 21st and who will come together at Grand Avenue Middle School in September.

The evening ceremonies featured students speaking about their fondest memories over the last seven years and board of education members and administrators sharing

inspirational messages.

There were also musical performances such as the jazz band’s rendition of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” at Newbridge Road School, “Canon In D”

by Saw Mill Road School’s sixth-grade orchestra, “Our Names in Lights” sung by John Dinkelmeyer School’s graduates and the Park Avenue and Martin Avenue school songs.

“Graduation signifies the end of one journey and

the beginning of a brand new exciting adventure,” said Leyna Malone, who noted that Martin Avenue’s sixth-graders would hold a special place in her heart as her first set of graduates as principal.

Superintendent Marie Testa shared a poem, “The Blue Between,” and encouraged students to see past what is ordinary and strive for the extraordinary.

A recurring theme in the messages to students was the importance of good character. Newbridge Road Principal Denise Fisher reminded them to be honest, live with integrity and help those

in need. Park Avenue Principal Eileen Speidel said that the students have grown into helpful, respectful, caring and kind individuals who can use those traits to succeed in middle school.

Hofstra University’s David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex was a sea of blue and white caps and gowns as 254 Division Avenue High School graduates from Levittown’s Class of 2017 took the next step toward new challenges during the 58th commencement exercises.

Under the baton of Mark Martufi, the high school orchestra played “Pomp and Circumstance” as the graduates proceeded onto the floor with board of education trustees, administrators and faculty.

Student Council president Steven Reilly led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the concert choir’s seniors singing the national anthem.

In his address to the graduates, Principal John Coscia relayed principles of a five-play theory learned during his years of playing football. “Always be prepared to seize the moment and then seize it 100 percent,” he said.

“Take pause and reflect on

the pivotal relationships in your lives.” In addition, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald said the Class of 2017 has made its mark on the Levittown School District and urged the graduates to do things with “heart and sincerity.”

Keynote speaker John Theissen related the story of his health problems during senior year and how they drove his passion to form the John Theissen Children’s Foundation.

“Never give up and believe in your dreams,” he said.

In addition to a musical interlude by the orchestra, who played “Pirates of the Caribbean,” salutatorian Sisam Bhandari paid tribute to her immigrant parents for the opportunities she is currently experiencing in America. “There isn’t a single day I don’t think about the sacrifices made by my parents, who left their native country of Nepal just so I could be sitting in Starbucks sipping my caramel Frappuccino, or standing right here in this moment and graduating as salutatorian of my high

school.”

Valedictorian Maria Mancz noted that because her peers were born into and live in a world of change, they are well prepared to take on the world. “We are so prepared, because change is all we know,” she said. “I am not worried at all about the biggest change in our lives, the one that stands before us today.” Class president Kristina Spano also urged her classmates to have a proper goodbye with friends and teachers they have met along the way.

After Board President James Moran certified that the seniors had met the requirements for graduation, the students approached the stage to receive his or her diploma and become alumni of the Levittown School District. Prior to joining their families, the Class of 2017 also watched a commemorative video presentation that featured short video clips and featured photographs of their years together.

Looking to the Future

Marie Pisicchio and Dr. Randee Bonagura congratulated the graduates on their academic accomplishments and noted that they have the tools to succeed in middle school.

They also urged the students to remember where their paths started and to know that they will always be a part of the school community.

Mr. Ciuffo told his students to embrace the challenges that a change to middle school will bring and to reflect on

how each of them would want to be remembered. “You have the power to create your own legacy,” he said. “Continue to live your life in the way you can be proud of.”

Upon the conclusion of the ceremonies, the graduates joined family and friends for refreshments, at which time they thanked their teachers and said goodbye to classmates until the fall.

As part of their Master Class program, theater students at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) had the pleasure of taking a class led by singer and actress Gina Milo. The students took turns performing excerpts from a song of their choosing, with Milo critiquing each performance and offering helpful hints to improve their performances.

The Master Class program is part of LIHSA’s ongoing mission to provide its students with an inside look at the industries they are pursuing, and to introduce them to mentors within their chosen fields.

“Gina Milo’s Master Class was a huge success,” said Theatre Teacher Abbe Gail Gross. “The students thoroughly enjoyed it and learned a lot from what she had to say. Gross said that the vocal music students joined in the afternoon session and said that they learned a lot about performing professionally from Milo.

At the end, they asked her to sing for the group. She performed “Somewhere That’s Green” from “The Little Shoppe of Horrors.”

“I’ve heard that song sung many times and I have never been as moved as when Gina sang it,” Gross added. “All of the students and faculty were riveted by her performance, and there was not a dry eye in the crowd.”

Milo, an Island Park native and an alumna of LIHSA, portrayed Eponine in the original Broadway production of “Les Miserables” before touring with the classic musical’s national company. Since then she has performed around the country in a variety of productions including “Annie,” “Best Little Whorehouse” and “Spamalot.” She appeared three times at Northport’s John W. Engeman Theater: in “Little Shop of Horrors,” “Hairspray,” and “Plaza

A New Academic Chapter Levittown’s elementary school students celebrated their successes during their primary years of education and now look forward to entering a future of new and more challenging academic experiences at Jonas E. Salk and Wisdom Lane middle schools.

As part of the district’s moving up tradition, the faculty and staff at Abbey Lane, East Broadway, Gardiners Avenue, Lee Road, Northside and Summit Lane elementary schools recognized the students with awards and celebratory speeches during their respective ceremonies.

Each of the principals and honored guests dispensed words of wisdom.

Abbey Lane Principal Dr. George Maurer told the students that their elementary moving up is just one of the milestones in their lives. “You will not get there alone, so along the way stop and thank the people who help you.”

Northside School Principal Frank Mortillaro asked his students to “show your best” at all times, be kind and have the best day ever, while Summit Lane Principal Keith Squillacioti encouraged the students to “continue to play like a champion.” In addition,

Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Todd Winch advised the students to become involved at the middle school as soon as possible. “Take all that middle school has to offer,” he remarked. “Your involvement will position you for high school.”

After the ceremonial speeches, choral selections, recognitions and special readings, the students were presented one-by-one with their certificates of completion to the applause of parents and family. They then joined their families for refreshments and said goodbye to classmates for the summer recess.

To honor the adoption of the American flag, students and faculty of Barnum Woods Elementary School in the East Meadow School District joined local officials and community members for a Flag Day ceremony on June 14th.

Dressed in red, white and blue, the students gathered on the school’s front field under sunny skies for the ceremony.

The U.S. Navy Color Guard raised the flag as members of the fifth-grade band and chorus performed patriotic songs. The ceremony was held prior to the school’s wellness walk, which was dedicated to Barnum Woods physical education teacher Donald Whearty and first-grade teacher Kristine Waters, both of whom are retiring.

Whearty and Waters took the podium to share what the American flag means to them and offer poignant remarks about their time at the school.

“Boys and girls, as I retire from Barnum Woods, I only ask that you strive to do your best, be kind, smile, live by the Golden Rule and know that I am the luckiest person

to have been able to teach all of you,” said Whearty.

“I will miss you all.”

Acknowledging the special day, he noted that the flag is a symbol of freedom to live and become whomever one wants to be.

Waters, a 26-year veteran of the school, reminisced about her earliest memories of the American flag on a shelf in her home and how her grandparents had immigrated to the United States.

“I hope my children remember what I tried to teach them about respecting each other’s differences, treating each other well and being a good citizen at school as well as in the community,” she said.

Following their remarks, Nassau County Legislator Kevan Abrahams thanked the Barnum Woods community and lauded its wellness initiative.

“I am happy to be here with you today — one, to celebrate Flag Day and show patriotism to our country, and two, to be a part of this walk, because walking and exercising strengthens our heart and enables us to live much

longer lives,” he said.

Continuing the festivities, recently retired Town of Hempstead Councilman Gary Hudes received a certificate of recognition from Nassau County Legislator Dennis Dunne on behalf of Town Supervisor Anthony Santino.

Hudes also accepted the “Building a Better Barnum” plaque from school Principal Gregory Bottari for his tireless dedication to the Barnum Woods community.

“It has been my pleasure to represent this community and to help thousands of families for 17 years,” said Hudes.

“Remember, because of what that flag represents, you can be anything you want to be and you can do anything you want to do.”

The ceremony ended with the wellness walk, dubbed “Whearty-Water’s Walk in the Woods.” Waving miniature American flags, the school community embarked on a journey through the neighborhood while sporting hats, signs and banners to promote an active lifestyle and healthy eating habits.

Island Lighthouse, the Montauk Lighthouse or any number of tourist attractions in New York City, I always find a new angle to appreciate, a slightly different perspective to photograph.

Of course, with a holiday such as the 4th of July, it’s always nice to view a few fireworks. With rare exception, this has generally meant sitting out on the deck in hopes that the neighbors had managed to obtain some sparkly explosives, or, if it wasn’t too crowded, taking a ride down to the local town beach to view the show from across the Bay. One year, a friend and I were inspired to check out the annual show at Eisenhower Park. After realizing that we should have probably allowed more time, resorting to parking on the side of Hempstead Turnpike and then wandering aimlessly around the park after having somehow missed the main entrance - we arrived. Or so we thought.

After hurriedly realizing this was not, in fact, the viewing area, we wound up walking/running what seemed like miles, following the distant sounds of explosions, until we came upon the rest of the crowd, who had most likely gotten there hours before. As we set up our blanket and settled down to watch what remained of the show, there was one final burst of color in the sky. And then… silence. The end.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, was the first and last “real” fireworks show I have ever attended. A priceless memory nonetheless, one that is fondly reflected upon whenever the holiday nears.

Here’s hoping everyone has a safe summer and enjoys whatever adventures it may bring. Just remember, you need not travel far to see beautiful sights… and make beautiful - if not brief - memories.

Smithsonian. Others took in a Washington Nationals game! To the delight of the Mets fans along on the trip, the Nationals lost to the Reds 6-2.

The next day, they toured the Capitol and the Supreme Court. They also went to the National Archives, where the boys saw the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the Magna

Carta.

Finally, on the last day, they went to Arlington Cemetery. They visited the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, saw the changing of the guard and visited the burial place of President John F. Kennedy and his family. Following that, they had an emotional tour of the Pentagon and the Pentagon 9/11memorial.

It was a jam-packed fantastic few days in D.C.

Of Summer Memories and Staycations Summer is upon us, officially, and for some that means making a getaway to tropical islands, upstate resorts or seaside chalets; essentially, anywhere but here. For me, I look at this season of warmth and sunshine as a perfect opportunity to enjoy all that Long Island has to offer.

Home sweet home, indeed.

Our little neck of the woods certainly has no shortage of pristine beaches, whether you prefer the smooth sand and surf of the south shore, or the seashell-encrusted terrain of the north shore. From the North Fork wineries, to the South Fork shopping hamlets, there is literally something for everyone to enjoy.

Personally, I have always been a big fan of the “staycation.”

Throw in a day trip to Manhattan or any of the boroughs, and you can literally travel from coast to coast over a four-day weekend and never run out of sights to see. No matter how many times I’ve visited the Fire

Poets Share with Parents culminated with a Poet Tea as the three classes gathered in the all-purpose room to recite published poems and perform songs for family members.

Students then returned to their classrooms to share their original works, with each selecting one poem to read aloud. Guests left with an anthology of poems from each class.

Ms. Obey said that

during the year students studied the works of many established children’s authors who are known for their poems including Mo Willems, Mercy Watson and Kate DiCamillo. Students incorporated different literary techniques into their own writing, and participated in peer editing to help each other make their poems better.

Wantagh Students Honored Two Wantagh High School students were each awarded a $1,000 scholarship by Wantagh High School alumnus and Handsome Homebuyer founder Charles Weinraub who graduated in 1997.

The scholarships were awarded in recognition of the scholastic

achievements of these two hard-working students.

Weinraub began providing two students per graduating class with a $1,000 scholarship after he opened his first business, a Maaco body shop in Hempstead, in 2005. He later founded The Handsome Homebuyer

in 2014. A 37-year-old entrepreneur, Weinraub currently buys properties on Long Island (specifically distressed, inherited or those about to be foreclosed), refurbishes them, and then puts them up for sale or rent.

Class of 2017 Graduates

Community was the theme of student emcee/ senior class president Madison Uzwy’s speech when she led Wellington C. Mepham High School’s 79th commencement on June 25th at the NYCM Theatre at Westbury.

“The people around you made the place actually feel like home. These people at Mepham have bonded and connected with you.”

This was the last commencement Michael Harrington will oversee as principal, as he will assume the role of assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction in the coming school year.

“This class has proved that it is possible to achieve extraordinary things when there is a shared sense of purpose and drive,” he said. “The

ways in which your class brought the community together through service projects…and how the spirit and pride that was felt at events [like that] is unlike any other school.

Your collective efforts as a class to improve the world around you will always be the legacy of the Class of 2017.”

Salutatorian Kristina Schwab said that while she couldn’t yet determine if high school were the best years of her life, she said that “without a doubt it was four of the most significant years.”

“Think back to your freshman self and I think of the person standing here today. In the time between we have matured and grew up. We gained a great sense of independence.”

Valedictorian Rachel Jozwik spoke about how to

navigate through this next chapter of life.

“The next few years – the rest of our lives will be all about experiences. We will make a million mistakes but learn a million new things. We will get lost a few times but find some really cool places. After all, the less we know, the more there is to learn.”

Board member Nina Lanci shared the “real secrets of success” with Mepham’s graduates.

These life lessons were similar to basics taught in kindergarten including venturing outside to play, smiling at people and remember to be humble and kind.

“Most importantly use the buddy system,” she added. “The world is a lot less scary when you know there is someone you can trust.”

An Academic Milestone Gray skies did not dampen the spirits of the Class of 2017 who celebrated a longawaited milestone during the Wantagh School District’s 62nd annual commencement exercises held in the school gymnasium on June 23rd.

The board of education, administration and faculty led the 281 graduates down the aisle and to their seats as the high school band, under the baton of Mindy Dragovich, played “Pomp and Circumstance.”

Wantagh High School Principal Carolyn Breivogel extended a warm welcome to the Class of 2017 and their guests and reminded the students, “Your character and name are your most prized possessions.” During her remarks, Superintendent of Schools Maureen Goldberg used the metaphor of a

ball of yarn to depict the milestones and twists the graduates and their parents will experience.

“The greatest twist is the unraveling of the line into the real world,” she said. She also urged the students to cherish family and friendships made during high school and to remember how blessed their lives have been.

Board president Anthony Greco told the graduates that he is confident they have the knowledge and skills to compete. “You can do anything you desire, as long as you stick to your goals,” he said.

Senior class copresidents Katherine Goldrick and Julia Kiefer reflected on high school memories and noted the enthusiasm and togetherness of the Class of 2017. Wantagh Foundation for Educational Excellence Executive Director Ralph Spagnolo and Wantagh Dollars for Scholars president Gerald McCrink then presented select seniors with scholarships, thus continuing the tradition of honoring educational achievement.

then took the podium and spoke about how his volunteerism at Camp ANCHOR has inspired him. He quoted the Camp ANCHOR theme, “To the world you might be one person, but to one person you might be the world.”

He also noted, “You don’t need to be a celebrity or a superhero to make a difference.” Valedictorian Grace Sullivan spoke about adversity’s drive to success and how feelings can be a momentous force in a person’s decisions. “We have all doubted ourselves during times of adversity,” she said. “The actions you take in the presence of adversity will define you as a person.”

After Mrs. Goldberg and Mr. Greco certified that the seniors had met the standards for graduation, the graduates were called to the podium to receive their diplomas, marking their start as alumni of the Wantagh School District.

The board of education and administration extend best wishes of happiness and success to the Class of 2017.

The Class of 2017 salutatorian looks forward to the next phase of her education at Georgetown University, where she plans to study health policy on a pre-med track with the goal of becoming a pediatric oncologist or cardiologist.

“I will always remember my caring teachers and friends at East Meadow for being my greatest support system over the years,” Sonali said. “The help they gave me when my research project unexpectedly took a wrong turn resulted in me winning the NYSSEF [New York State Science and Engineering Fair] Andromeda award.”

As valedictorian, Alby ends his tenure at W.T. Clarke High School with a 110.39 GPA. Along with achieving success in the classroom, his community

service, involvement in school clubs and musical accomplishments have left an impression on the Class of 2017.

The top-ranked senior is president of the National, Tri-M Music and Science honor societies, as well as a member of Mathletes, Science Olympiads, the English, Math and Foreign Language honor societies, and the Mock Trial team, which recently won the New York State championship. In addition, he is features editor of the school newspaper, the Vanguard. Playing the cello since the fourth grade, Alby has performed in All-Eastern, All-County, All-State and Long Island String Festival Association concerts, in addition to performing in the pit orchestra for the school’s musicals. Outside of Clarke, he has volunteered at the information desk of Nassau University Medical Center.

Through the school’s Science Research program, Alby interned at Stony Brook University, where, under the mentorship of Professor Iwao Ojima, he studied a new way to treat pain by attacking a specific protein. His project earned him third place in the national Junior Science and Humanities Symposium, designation as a Siemens Competition semifinalist and Regeneron Scholar, and publication of his work in the Columbia University Junior Science Journal.

Along with his scientific achievements, Alby was named a National Merit Scholarship Program winner.

The Clarke valedictorian will attend Massachusetts

Institute of Technology in the fall, where he will major in chemical engineering.

“One of the reasons I chose MIT was because it seemed the most like Clarke,” he explained. “Clarke’s diverse, close-knit community is what I’m going to miss most but also what I’m most looking forward to when I arrive at MIT.” Finishing her high school career with a 108.42 GPA, Priya graduates as W.T. Clarke salutatorian following years of challenging course loads and heavy involvement in school and community activities.

During her tenure at Clarke, Priya studied computer science on her own time, which led her to create a computer science initiative on campus. Due to her efforts, a course in the subject will be offered to students in the fall. Applying her strong work ethic to science research, she conducted an experiment at Molloy College that focused on applying the principles of evolution to evaluate how cancer recurs after a variety of treatments. Additionally, she was named a 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program Commended Student for her outstanding academic performance and SAT scores.

Aside from her studies, Priya was involved in Science Olympiads and Mathletes, served as layout editor of the Vanguard, and belonged to every honor society at her school. Her greatest passions were serving as DECA president for two consecutive years and actively participating in the school’s Multicultural Club. The DECA team made school history this year by sending 70 members to the state competition and 16 to the International Career Development Conference in California. In April, during the Multicultural Club’s annual show that highlights the different cultures of Clarke High School, Priya performed two Indian dances and two American Sign Language routines.

“The best experiences of my life came about as a member of the Multicultural Club for the past four years,” said Priya. “I’ve always loved being involved in a tight-knit group and making connections that I know will last the rest of my life.”

Outside of Clarke, Priya volunteered at St. Francis Hospital in Port Washington, where she shadowed doctors and assisted visitors.

Capping off her academic achievements, Priya received the Stony Brook University Presidential Scholarship, covering the cost of tuition at SBU, where she will enroll in the Women in Science and Engineering program and major in human evolutionary biology in the fall.

“Clarke has done so much for us by providing all these wonderful opportunities,” she said. “Being a part of this community, having these teachers and interacting with all the grade levels has shaped me into the person I am today. I could not be more grateful for my time at Clarke.”

Culminating their years of educational accomplishments, extracurricular activities and community involvement, East Meadow High School valedictorian Mahalia Mathelier and salutatorian Sonali Persaud, and W.T. Clarke High School valedictorian Alby Joseph and salutatorian Priya Aggarwal, reflected upon their time in the East Meadow School District.

Finishing her academic career with a 107.856 GPA, Mahalia excelled in her Advanced Placement, honors and college-level classes while participating in school organizations and volunteering within her community.

Her diverse interests and talents were evident as a member of Model Congress, French Club, and Business and Social Studies honor societies. A leader among her peers, she served on the National Honor Society Executive Board and was treasurer of the English Honor Society and secretary of Key Club. Her activities were rounded out as a member of the school’s kickline team, the Rockettes, and news editor of the school newspaper, the Jet Gazette.

Outside of the classroom, Mahalia volunteers at the Nassau County Youth Court in Hempstead, where she has been learning the ins and outs of the legal process. The program provides an opportunity for children and adolescents who commit low-level offenses to be adjudicated by their peers.

Among her fondest memories, Mahalia cites the moment that the entire student body cheered for her when she was announced as this year’s valedictorian.

“The outpouring of kindness I received from my peers and teachers was so heartwarming,” she recalled. “Being stopped and congratulated by so many people made me realize how much I am going to miss this school.”

She will pursue a major in economics with a minor in political science at Harvard University in the fall.

Graduating with a 107.4 GPA, Sonali was a leader within the student body as well. She served on the executive board of the National Honor Society, was copresident of the Social Studies Honor Society, chaired the Key Club, and was a member of Model Congress, Mathletes, Peer Leaders, and the Tri-M Music and Science honor societies. In addition, she played on the varsity tennis team for all four years. Her intrinsic motivation to help others prompted her founding of Glamour Girls, an organization that promotes female leadership and provides free cosmetic services to residents of senior citizen homes. She is also a Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership alumna and school representative.

In her scientific studies, Sonali measured and manipulated oscillatory gene expression in caenorhabditis elegans at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory under the guidance of Dr. Christopher Hammell.

Within her community, Sonali completed her Girl Scout Silver Award and, for her leadership award, aims to start an organization similar to Glamour Girls at hospitals for patients and their families. She has shadowed doctors at North Shore University Hospital in

Signifying their bright futures, seniors from East Meadow and W.T. Clarke high schools in the East Meadow School District accepted their diplomas under sunny skies on June 25th. Both ceremonies included musical interludes from the senior chorale, poignant speeches from administrators and a farewell address from Superintendent of Schools Leon J. Campo.

Filing in to the traditional strains of Sir Edward Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance,” the graduates assembled on their respective schools’ football fields sporting blue and maroon caps and gowns to the applause and cheers of proud parents, faculty, administrators and board of education members.

In his final speech before retiring as East Meadow’s Superintendent, Mr. Campo addressed the graduates with words of wisdom while commending

their personal and academic growth, as well as their selfless service to the community.

“All of your hard work has brought you to this place of distinction, recognition and accomplishment,” he said. “Together we have traveled a great distance and my wish for you all is to be lifelong learners and use your library of knowledge and experience to help you as you navigate life.”

The valedictorians and salutatorians of both classes addressed their peers one final time reflecting on the fond high school memories and urging their fellow graduates to embrace the uncertainty that the world has to offer.

To commemorate the East Meadow High School 60th graduation exercises, Principal Richard Howard, commended the Class of 2017 for their years of outstanding accomplishments and

reminded them they’ll always have a place to call home. He also presented Joseph MacDonell, a graduate of the Class of 1957 with an honorary diploma and bestowed celebratory diplomas to Mr. Campo and Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Cindy Munter.

Across the district, W.T. Clarke High School Principal Timothy Voels commended the seniors for their academic successes, community service efforts and passions, while also wishing them a lifetime of happiness in whatever they choose to do.

After receiving their diplomas and moving their tassels to the left, the Class of 2017 tossed their caps in the air, rejoicing with friends and family.

The district congratulates both classes and wishes them happiness, prosperity and great success as they embark on their next journey.

Continuing their academic journey in the East Meadow School District, eighthgraders of Woodland and W.T. Clarke middle schools commemorated the culmination of their past three years with commencement ceremonies on June 21st.

Entering to “Pomp and Circumstance,” a sea of red gowns assembled to the cheers and praise of families, friends, teachers and administrators.

Throughout both commencements, the Woodland trumpet and flute trio and the W.T. Clarke Middle School jazz ensemble serenaded graduates, administrators and welcomed guests.

In his farewell address to the impending Class of 2021, Superintendent of Schools Leon J. Campo reminded the middle school graduates to thank those who helped them reach this distinction and to make the right decisions over the next four years.

“I wish everyone of you success in this next step

of life and I know you all will continue to do great things,” said Mr. Campo.

“As you head off to high school, I’d like to leave you with some advice: thank your teachers, friends, family and administrators for their unconditional support and guidance over the years. Secondly, you have your entire lives in front of you, please don’t make bad decisions. As the leaders of tomorrow, the memories you forged in high school will last a lifetime and shape you into outstanding citizens this world needs.”

Following his speech, Mr. Campo awarded Nishanth Chinnadurai and Hafsa Rehman from Woodland Middle School and Anjali Aggarwal and Ryan Faude from W.T. Clarke Middle School with the Superintendent’s Award. This honor is bestowed upon students at the middle school level for their overall academic excellence, good citizenship, leadership qualities and dignified character.

Continuing with the reminiscent spirit, middle school class representatives reflected upon their milestones and memories with the Class of 2017. They also encouraged their fellow graduates to broaden their horizons and expand upon their experiences in school as well as in life.

Woodland Middle School, Principal James Lethbridge and W.T. Clarke Middle School Principal Stacy Breslin spoke fondly of the physical, emotional, intellectual and social growth of the graduates during their time in middle school. They expressed their hopes that the eighthgraders will utilize their experiences, challenges and support from faculty, friends and family in the next phase of life.

The district commends the eighth-grade graduates on arriving at this prestigious milestone and wishes them tremendous success as they advance to high school.

Poets’ Corner Presented by South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers

The June 25th commencement ceremony for Sanford H. Calhoun High School’s Class of 2017, which was held at the NYCB Theatre at Westbury, celebrated the students as individuals and as a collective group.

“You are by all measures a phenomenal group of students, athletes, artists and musicians,” said Principal Nicole Hollings.

“With all of your abilities and talents, your futures burn bright with promise, possibility, power and potential. All of you have the power within yourselves to inspire, encourage, empathize and guide each other.”

Board member and fellow Calhoun alumna Wendy Gargiulo reminded graduates that their virtues will become their commonality in life.

“Know that someone will always have more than you,” she said, referring to the life’s perpetual rat race. “Your reputation and having integrity are so much more important than material things.”

Social studies teacher/ senior class adviser Brian Joyce offered the faculty farewell, stressing the importance of legacy, as he teaches in his leadership course.

“Think to yourselves, ‘how do you want to be remembered?’ And always try to focus on being the best version of yourself and find a way to serve others.”

Class president Sara Samir reflected on Calhoun’s atmosphere as “binding.”

“For those who may not have been as affected as others, this day marks an opportunity for them to

flourish,” she said.

Valedictorian Julia Losner talked about the power of the sun after an eclipse and wow moments from kindergarten to now.

“There are many more to come, including when we discover something about ourselves we didn’t know was there.”

Salutatorian Matthew Garber used learning how to tie a bow tie as a metaphor for persevering through life’s struggles.

“It’s the twists and turns of a bow tie and the pulling and finagling that represent the trials of our character.”

Pulling out a small mirror to adjust the bow tie, Garber told classmates to “focus on self-reflection and re-evaluation to get through the hurdles.”

Volunteers Needed Child Abuse Prevention Services (CAPS), Long Island’s leading volunteer organization dedicated to preventing child abuse and neglect, is looking for concerned individuals to present their acclaimed classroom programs on bullying, Internet safety and child abuse prevention to students this school year.

“The demand for CAPS workshops continues to grow, so it is urgent that we find more volunteers to join our mission of working together to keep every child safe from harm,” according to Alane Fagin, Executive Director.

“We can do something to prevent child abuse and bullying! We know that students who are exposed

to prevention education early and throughout their school years are better prepared to respond when faced with a difficult situation.”

CAPS provides comprehensive training for those individuals interested in learning how to present these workshops.

Interested individuals are interviewed

at the CAPS office and those who qualify are provided professional training to prepare to become a CAPS Volunteer Presenter in schools on Long Island.

Training sessions for new volunteers for the upcoming school year are being scheduled for this August and September. The organization urges anyone interested in learning

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD), Long Island’s premier provider of substance abuse services and prevention programs is pleased to announce that Mr. Nelson Monica, a mentor in the LICADD BUDDY (Building Unique, Dynamic & Diverse Youth) has received Mentor of the Year from Mentor New York. Mentor New York, an affiliate of the National Mentoring Partnership, fuels quality mentoring relationships that match a caring adult with children in need through safe, effective mentoring programs throughout New York State.

A special dinner, Mentoring Night Out, was held on June 22nd at the Bowery Hotel in New York City. Both Mr. Monica and his mentee, Miguel G. were in attendance. Celebrating

with them were BUDDY Program Coordinator, Lauren Laurore, LCSW and LICADD Board Chairman Michael Brennan and his wife, Donna. The BUDDY program matches children who have an incarcerated parent (or close relative) with an adult trained volunteer.

The mentor meets with their mentee on a regular basis to provide guidance and support with the goal of building a trusting relationship. The BUDDY program has been in existed for seven years and is supported by fundraising efforts and grant foundations, Bank of America and The Richard and Mary Morrison Foundation.

For 61 years, LICADD is Long Island’s premier nonprofit agency providing life-saving alcohol and drug prevention and intervention services

to at-risk children, individuals, and families across the region. With offices in Westbury and Holbrook, LICADD conducts screenings, brief interventions, referrals to treatment and relapse prevention services to individuals and families impacted by substance abuse. The agency also conducts evidence-based prevention programs, community outreach initiatives, a BUDDY mentoring program for children of incarcerated parents, and public policy advocacy at the national, state and local level.
