Inspiration. It can come from anywhere. A song. A movie. A book. A beautiful sunset. A peaceful walk along the shoreline. Anywhere.

As I sit here on yet another deadline day, scrambling to finish the last of my work for the week, I am in search of some of that inspiration for my column. Last week’s article drew perhaps some of the greatest attention on the social media circuit, as I was pleasantly surprised by numerous “likes,” “comments” and “shares” from those supporters who follow my page on

Facebook (see above).

It’s amazing how a little positive feedback can provide that much-needed affirmation that, yes, you are doing something worthwhile that people appreciate. And, on that note, I do appreciate the support of you, the readers.

Without an audience, words are merely diary entries, notes to self never meant to see the light of day. But with interaction, and reaction, they take on new life.

Of course, it helps to actually get out from behind the desk and live life from time to time too. How else can you expect to experience

those glorious sunsets and shorelines? And summer is indeed the perfect time for all of the above. Work hard to play hard, right? Well this is the season to take those vacation days, even if it’s only to catch up on your reading or start watching a new TV series. For those more adventurous among us, take a trip to NYC, or Fire Island, or Montauk… pick a direction, and just go.

Last Hope’s “Fix-AFeral” program is geared to experienced cat caregivers as well as beginners who may only care for several cats. Last Hope also lends out humane “Have a Heart” traps and guides novice trappers. “Fix-AFeral” has subsidized the spaying and neutering of over 16,000 cats since it began 11 years ago.

“In the past, we spent a lot of time planning fundraisers to support Last Hope’s “Fix-A-Feral” initiative,” said Linda Stuurman, president of Last Hope. “We hold a luncheon, a raffle and rely on donations from a kind corporate sponsor to fund our vouchers, but

the number of feral cats on Long Island is immense.

The requests for help are increasing. We’d begin issuing program vouchers in March to coincide with kitten season, and often run out of funds by midNovember. We simply did not have enough money to keep discounts available all year. It is heartbreaking not to be able to assist every caller pleading for help, or every feral or cat colony on Last Hope’s radar. Just this week, we received a call from a 95 year old man who had a mother cat nursing kittens in his shed.”

The generous grant from the ASPCA will continue to aid in the distribution of “Fix-A-Feral” vouchers so they last the entire year.

Life On Fire Island

The ecosystem on Fire Island is as diverse as it is complex. Everything, from the smallest tick to the largest shark, can be found on the Fire Island National Seashore.

In my six years of living on Fire Island, I have seen whales, sharks, dolphins and many other aquatic creatures. The whale sightings are very rare, but dolphins can be seen almost everyday.

Sharks wash up on the beach occasionally, but you never see their dorsal fins popping up out of the water as in many popular movies. Just the other day on my way to work, I saw a small, dried shark on the sand getting pecked at by seagulls.

Types of marine life aren’t the only animals making a presence on Fire Island. Birds, insects and

other land species have also been spotted. We have a myriad of bird species on Fire Island. It seems like each year, people spot a different kind of bird!

Some of the aviary species that call this barrier island home include seagulls, piping plovers and ospreys.

Fire Island has an overwhelming number of insects. Pound for pound, insects make up the most populous genre of life on Fire Island. Mosquitos, ticks, spiders and beetles are literally everywhere you look. Some claim that this abundance is a bad thing, but they are wrong. Insects are the backbone to a healthy ecosystem. Insects are the most crucial part of Fire Island’s environment.

Deer are arguably Fire Island’s most shining feature.

These fourlegged gentle giants

scare day-trippers and amaze residents. Their playful antics and distinct personalities make deer a Fire Island staple.

Foxes are becoming more and more plentiful on our little island.

Rummaging through garbage pails or stealthily walking the beach, these little creatures are truly wondrous.

Watching these animals from your bedroom window truly gives you an understanding of what it is like to survive.

Following the notorious Hurricane Sandy, our island was decimated.

Now, Fire Island and its inhabitants are quickly regaining their strength.

These animals will remain part of the Fire Island landscape for years to come, for us to enjoy, our kids to enjoy and their kids to enjoy.

Making A Difference Parkway Elementary School in the East Meadow School District recently participated in the Sunrise On Wheels program. The mission of the in-hospital program is to provide fun and excitement for children undergoing chemotherapy treatments.

The school collected a variety of arts and crafts items for children to use during treatment sessions, including crayons, markers, glitter, stickers and coloring books, as well as educational games and toys. The school’s effort made for many smiles and

aided in brightening the spirits of children.

“We really enjoyed bringing some sunshine to their lives, and we look forward to doing it again next year,” said school social worker Margherita Diglio.

The atmosphere in Hofstra University’s Mack Sports Complex was one of pride and excitement as 257 graduates from Division Avenue High School in Levittown took a step toward a new chapter in their lives during the 55th commencement exercises.

Under the direction of conductor Mark Martuffi, the high school orchestra played “Pomp and Circumstance,” announcing the graduates who filed into the arena with board trustees, administrators and faculty. Student Council Co-president Nicholas Fuchs led the audience in

the Pledge of Allegiance, while senior members of the concert choir, under the direction of Paige Hardison, sang the national anthem.

Principal Joan Lorelli welcomed the audience to this milestone celebration and encouraged the graduates to “share, nurture and treasure your gifts as I will always treasure you.”

Salutatorian Lyndsey Petrofsky advised her peers that if they are true to their dreams, the risk will be worth taking, and that with imagination, anything is possible. “No matter what path you take, you will succeed in your own right,”

she said.

In his valedictorian address, Savvas Papadopoulos said passion has become a staple, if not a necessity, in his life.

“Don’t be afraid to obsess on what you enjoy,” he recommended. “Find what makes you complete.”

Class President Megan Oliveri reminisced about what she had learned during her time in Levittown Schools and thanked the teachers for their support.

She also announced the class gift of funds for the Kim Foglia Memorial Garden and the Karen Jennaco Memorial Scholarship Fund.

New Beginnings At Division U.S. Sen. Charles E. Schumer, Town of Hempstead Councilman Gary Hudes and Nassau County Legislator Dennis Dunne reflected on past experiences and encouraged the students to reach for their dreams, work hard toward their goals and to thank their parents for their support. Levittown Board of Education President Kevin Regan reminded the students that although their journey had been long, they had never been alone.

During a cherished tradition, the graduates and audience took time out from the ceremony to watch a commemorative video presentation that featured photographs and short video clips of the seniors’ last day together.

After Mr. Regan certified that the seniors had met the requirements for graduation, each graduate walked across the stage to receive his or her diploma and become an alumnus of the Levittown School District. The district extends its congratulations and best wishes for success and happiness to each member of the Class of 2014.

Program Completed The applause and well-wishes of administrators, faculty and family resonated throughout the auditorium at Wisdom Lane Middle School as 183 students received their certificates of completion from the Levittown School District’s Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Center program on June 10th.

In her opening remarks, Principal Joan Lorelli told the students that she is humbled to be their principal. She also explained that GC Tech is at the forefront of offering both college-ready and employment certification. “The world of work is the endpoint for all of our students,” she said. “Thanks for shining a spotlight on career and technical education.”

During the student address to the Class of 2014, SkillsUSA President Jessica Zager thanked the teachers and administration for their support. “It takes a team to graduate,” she said to her graduating peers. “It all comes down to help, so let’s remember to help others and take advantage of the skills our teachers taught us.”

Celebrating The Flag Dressed in patriotic colors, first-grade students at Abbey Lane Elementary School in the Levittown School District concluded their study of the American flag and the Pledge of Allegiance with a Flag Day celebration attended by parents, faculty and local dignitaries.

Flag Day is typically celebrated on June 14th and commemorates the 1777 adoption of the American flag by resolution of the Second Continental Congress.

Waving miniature flags, the students and their teachers led the audience in the singing of patriotic

songs and educated their guests with presentations about famous Americans, American symbols and the heads of state imprinted on coins. The ceremony also recognized audience members who have served the country.

Celebrating A Milestone

It was a day of celebration as 264 eighthgrade students at Wantagh Middle School participated in the annual Crossing Over ceremony in the high school gymnasium. The ceremony proceeded with the pledge of allegiance led by student Michael Henning and welcoming remarks by Assistant Principal Dan Katchihtes.

“You are a class that is very special to me,” Mr. Katchihtes told the students. “You are the first class I worked with at Wantagh Middle School, and you went out of your way to make me feel comfortable. Since that time, you have learned to take care of yourselves and have shown great respect

for others.”

In her remarks, Superintendent of Schools Maureen Goldberg reminded the students that they are the high school Class of 2018 and will come upon many challenges in their lives. “You will continue to have many milestones in your lives, and what is important in the end is what lies within you,” she said.

Graduates Hunter Felix, Kelly Podell and Kyleigh Watson then reminisced about the various happenings that took place during grades six through eight, while Casey Leimbach spoke to her peers about crossing over to the high school with a “clean slate.” She

also encouraged fellow graduates to get involved in the myriad of sports and clubs the high school has to offer.

“You have a chance to reinvent yourselves,” Casey said. “Your life is your story and you get to write it.”

After the celebratory speeches concluded, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Maureen Appiarius called each of the graduates to the podium to receive a certificate of completion, handed out

by Ms. Goldberg, Board of Education President Michael Soethout and Vice President Anthony Greco. After the ceremony, the students attended a traditional dinner dance.

Grant Received Last Hope Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation, Inc. is thrilled to announce that it has again received a $5,000 grant from the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) to fund Last Hope’s “FixA-Feral” program, which offers financial assistance to the Long Island public to spay/neuter feral cats. This program aids in alleviating the tremendous feral cat overpopulation problem as this discount incentive also enables the public to afford to help more cats.

In 2003, Last Hope initiated its “Fix-A-Feral” voucher system, which makes the cost of spay/ neuter and vaccines for feral cats more economical to the public by reducing the price at participating veterinary clinics. Voucher users must agree to participate in the TNR ( Tr a p / N e u t e r / R e t u r n ) program, whereby the cats are returned (if not tame) to the location where they were trapped; and then commit to feeding, and providing shelter for the cats. Tame cats enter Last

Hope’s adoption program.

Last Hope’s “Fix-AFeral” program is geared to experienced cat caregivers as well as beginners who may only care for several cats. Last Hope also lends out humane “Have a Heart” traps and guides novice trappers. “Fix-A-Feral” has subsidized the spaying and neutering of over 16,000 cats since it began 11 years ago.

“In the past, we spent a lot of time planning fundraisers to support Last Hope’s “Fix-A-Feral” initiative,” said Linda

Alzheimer’s Regatta On June 14th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. sponsored by Sagamore Yacht Club and Oakcliff Sailing Center, hosted its Second Annual Alzheimer’s Regatta and Awards Dinner at the Sagamore Yacht Club in Oyster Bay. The regatta raised over $23,000, which will benefit Alzheimer’s Disease research and support.

The highest fundraising

team in the fundraising category was “Paddlers for Poker” with team captain Jean Fassino. The team raised a total of $745.

The first-place winner of this year’s Regatta Sailing Race was “Rift” captained by Bill Maher.

In second place was Captain Darrin Martin’s “Commanche,” followed by “Serendiptity,” which was helmed by Bob Betensky.

Dawn Riley, Executive

Director, Oakcliff Sailing Center, and Board Member, US Sailing, was in attendance. Ms. Riley was the 2002 IC45 and 2007 K-Challenge America’s Cup World Champion. As CEO and Captain of America True, she was the first woman to manage an America’s Cup sailing team.

Along with the race there was a Paddling for Poker event where participants paddled to

five boats; at each boat, they received a card and once they received five cards, they then made their best poker hand. The highest poker hand received an award at the dinner for their achievement.

This year, The Alzheimer’s Regatta had a special treat for those who wanted to watch the Regatta and Paddling for Poker: a guided tour of historic Oyster Bay

and Cold Spring Harbor aboard the Christeen, a 40-foot Gaff Rigged Sloop that was built in 1883 and completely restored in 1999. She is the oldest Oyster Sloop in America and is a National Historic Landmark.

The awards ceremony was accompanied by dinner, dessert and live entertainment by The Old Salts Band, where guests enjoyed each other’s company while raising

money for a good cause.

Stony Brook School of Journalism Dean Howard Schneider and Undergraduate Director Paul Schreiber were tapped by the Press Club of Long Island (PCLI) as inaugural “Hall of Fame” inductees this week. The PCLI, which celebrated its 40th anniversary this month, is a chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

PCLI established its new Hall of Fame this year to recognize 25 trailblazing journalists and media organization owners, living and deceased, who have produced and promoted the highest level of journalism based on Long Island and shown leadership in the industry. It is an “evolution of PCLI’s annual lifetime achievement award and was created to celebrate the accomplishments and achievements of journalists,” according to the organization.

“Howie and Paul were extraordinary journalists prior to joining Stony Brook University. They deserve this honor, and we are fortunate to have them at the helm of SUNY’s first and only School of Journalism,” said Dennis N. Assanis, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Stony Brook University. “Their vision, real-world experience, energy and enthusiasm have enabled the

Hall Of Fame Honorees School of Journalism to grow immensely over the past eight years, and it’s no surprise that their good work has brought national acclaim to the Stony Brook campus.”

After leaving Newsday as its editor in 2004 after 35 years at the paper, Schneider was invited by then-

Paul Schreiber, who took a buyout from Newsday in 2002 after 33 years at the paper, returned to Stony Brook in 2004 as director of the journalism minor. He became the SOJ’s undergraduate director when the school was approved.

Following Schneider’s strategic plan, they developed its comprehensive multimedia curriculum and its Center for News Literacy, the pioneering program that enables students to use critical thinking skills to judge the reliability and credibility of news reports from all media, including the Web. That program has since spread to dozens of other universities in North America and overseas.

More recently, the school has added the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science, the Marie Colvin Center for International Reporting and a Master of Science degree in journalism.

Now in its eighth year, the Stony Brook School of Journalism has an enrollment president Shirley Strum Kenny to study the possibility of approximately 250 undergraduate majors and minors, of launching a journalism major at Stony Brook.
