For the very first time ever, the three high schools in Merrick and Bellmore, John F. Kennedy, Calhoun and Mepham High Schools, will run a Multi-Year Reunion and a Singles Mingles Event in the states of Florida and New York simultaneously on August 3rd. Time is 7 p.m.; registration starts at 6:30 p.m. The concept is that not only will you be able to reconnect with your high school friends, but these are the friends you spent all those years with when you went to elementary and Jr. High.

This event may spark some renewed feeling that you had for your school day crushes with your childhood sweethearts.

At the same time, the connections you had as a child can only be surpassed but the commonality that we all will have, all coming from the same community. What more of

a connection could anyone have than all growing up and coming from the same communities of Merrick and Bellmore?

All grads from JFK, Mepham and Calhoun through 1988 are welcome to attend and bring a guest.

Both events will be held on Sunday, August 3rd, starting at 7 p.m. at both the venues.

The Florida - Multi High School, Multi Year, Singles Mingles Event will be held at The Pavilion Grille in Boca Raton FL, 301 Yamato Road. The Florida event has a $10 cover that includes one house drink, a live band and dancing.

The New York Singles Mingles, Multi Year, Multi High School Reunion will be held at MaliBlue Oyster Bar in Lido Beach, 1500 Lido Blvd. This venue will have music provided

by the band “Kamellot,” comprised of musician alumni from JFK High School. There is no cover, but a $5 donation is recommended. You may also have dinner there before the reunion event.

aunt passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease.

Once in awhile, amidst all your bad days, you’ll have a good day. A great day, even.

Make sure you remember those days. Keep them safely in the pockets of your coat or in a jar on your desk, because you need to know that there are and will be better days.

You need to remember how, on those days, you felt all warm inside, like you’ve just drunk a hot cup of tea, like a small fire has ignited inside of you. Hold on to the warmth and never let it go.

My eyes landed upon these words as I scanned through all the usual mundane drivel one tends to come across on Facebook, shared by one of my friends, and many before

her, from one of those sites which tend to cull such inspirational quotes and sayings. I did attempt to look up the original source, but to no avail; such is the gift and curse of the Internet, I suppose.

In any case, whomever thought to put such eloquent words to a concept we all preach but seldom seem to practice – bravo! It is, essentially, just a rewording of the tried and true cliché to appreciate each and every day, to live life to the fullest, to know that “however good or bad a situation is, it will change” (yet another of those “famous” unattributed sayings).

But, sometimes, we do need to be reminded. All

situations require appropriate perspective, something we often lack in the heat of the moment. And the happy times? Well they tend to get lost in the shuffle, swept aside in favor of dwelling on those days that didn’t go quite according to plan. I think that’s why I love photography so much. Memories are priceless, to be sure; but there is something truly precious – and irreplaceable – about capturing that instant of happiness forever.

These are the days to remember, ‘cause they will not last forever… so said one of Long Island’s finest songwriters, Billy Joel. Best to store them away for a rainy day – or, in my case, snap a photo for posterity.

The Grand Ballroom of the Crest Hollow Country Club was filled with Nassau County’s best and brightest students as the Nassau County Council of School Superintendents hosted its annual Celebration of Excellence Breakfast to honor the Class of 2014 valedictorians and salutatorians of Nassau County. More than 450 guests were in attendance to pay tribute to these outstanding leaders of the Class of 2014. This event was attended by superintendents, principals, valedictorians, salutatorians and their parents from 56 Nassau County school districts.

Serving as keynote speaker for the event was New York State Board of Regents Regent Roger Tilles. “You have proven your ability to succeed,” he said to the students. “If you choose a field, don’t be discouraged if it’s not for you. It is an opportunity to

gain appreciation of what you have done and the skills you have acquired.

We are all extremely proud of what you have accomplished.”

David S. Feller, president of the NCCSS and North Merrick superintendent of schools, also addressed the students. “You all possess the intelligence and resiliency to continue to achieve success,” he said.

“We salute each of you for your amazing academic achievements.”

Event chairperson and Freeport School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham, who also served as the emcee, welcomed those in attendance and extended his personal congratulations to the valedictorians and salutatorians on their outstanding achievements.

“Be bold, be courageous on your new journey,” advised Dr. Kuncham. He reminded them that they

are joining a league of famous valedictorians and salutatorians, including Sonia Sotomayor, Dr. Seuss, Albert Einstein and Michelle Obama, among others.

The superintendents on the Celebrating Excellence Breakfast Committee presented each valedictorian and salutatorian with a prestigious plaque. As each student was called to the stage, his or her college was announced. Included among the impressive list of colleges were several Ivy League schools and the most prominent colleges on Long Island and across the country.

With just a few days remaining in the school year, the students are adding their final memories to their high school careers before starting the next chapter in their academic pursuits and a future full of promise and continued success.

There were over 900 entries in this annual competition, which gives students the opportunity to creatively demonstrate their understanding of bullying issues and strategies learned in

Wantagh High School teacher Kathleen Aymong has been named by the Long Island Business Teacher Association as the 2014 Outstanding Business Educator in recognition of her passion for, dedication to and excellence in teaching business.

A 30-year veteran teacher, Aymong developed the Business Law program at Wantagh High School, which attracts many students.

Under her leadership, the high school also offers a college-level Business Law class in partnership with LIU Post, and professionals from the field often visit the classroom to establish realworld connections with students.

Aymong’s relationship

with the production crew of “The People’s Court” has allowed her to take Business Law students on field trips to this popular show, the highlight of the students’ studies. As a work-study coordinator, Aymong also maintains strong relationships with local businesses, and managers have come to expect recommendations for well-prepared students.

In a nomination letter, Wantagh business teachers Bobbi Colavita, Christine Compagnino, Nancy O’Connor, Jamie Stanulis and Kathleen Woodworth said of Aymong, “Her vision for our Business Education Department is for eternal growth that will extend well beyond her years as a teacher at Wantagh. “This was a favorite activity for the children because it was fun to see the chicks’ different personalities,” said Mrs. Wuchte.

Many classes came to visit the feathered visitors, and the kindergarten students enjoyed teaching about chickens and answering questions about the experience.

Night Of Celebration It was a night of honor and celebration as the top Levittown seniors were recognized for their outstanding achievements during MacArthur High School’s Annual Senior Awards Night.

This tradition recognizes the students’ overall accomplishments during their four years of high school. During

the ceremony, seniors received approximately $4,500 in scholarship monies from local community businesses and organizations and honors from government officials.

Principal Kathleen Valentino congratulated the students on their dedication to success and sacrifice and the parents and educators for their

commitment to education.

Triathlon Going Strong Thirty years ago the Town of Hempstead Triathlon was a one-of-a-kind event, but three decades later the competition is fierce, yet the race remains a favorite with local athletes.

This year, the Town Triathlon is racing into its 30th season with entry applications available by calling the Department of Parks and Recreation at 516.292.9000, extension 7219.

“An exciting combination of swimming, biking and running, the 2014 Triathlon is set for 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 6th at Town Park Point Lookout,” according to Supervisor Kate Murray.

Set along the beautiful beachfront at Town Park Point Lookout, the Triathlon begins with a hearty three-quarter mile ocean swim. After emerging from the surf, competitors set off on a ten-mile bike through the streets of Point Lookout and Lido Beach. The final leg of the Triathlon is a five-mile run to the finish line at Town Park.

“Always a thrilling event, the Triathlon showcases the athletic skill and competitive spirit of each participant,” commented Supervisor Murray. “We look forward to hosting a

full field of 300 contestants in our 30th Anniversary race and expectations are high for exciting finishes in both the men’s and women’s divisions.

To receive a 2014 Triathlon application, send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to: Town of Hempstead Triathlon, Department of Parks and Recreation, 200 North Franklin Street, Hempstead, New York 11550. Registration fees, set at $44 for a town resident, $66 for a nonresident and $22 for a town senior or veteran, are payable by check or money order made out to the Town of Hempstead. The deadline for registration is Thursday, August 28th.

In addition to presenting each participant with a souvenir t-shirt and a special race memento, the Triathlon will bestow handsome awards on the top male and female finishers in each of ten age categories. Championship trophies will also be presented to the overall men’s and women’s winners.

Well, it’s officially summer. School is over and the weather is getting warm. I’m a high school graduate now, and I am expected to act like a man.

Looking back, I find it strange that high school seniors are treated like children while they are making some of the most important decisions of their lives. I had to ask to use the restroom a few weeks ago.

If we aren’t granted that much freedom, how can we be expected to make smart decisions regarding college?

From my experiences, I do not think seventeen year-old kids are responsible enough to make their own decisions.

Sure, there may be a few exceptions to the rule, but

generally this idea is true.

This is not because we are naturally incapable and immature; it is because we are groomed to look toward others for help and reassurance.

When we look at the classroom setting, it becomes clear just how spoon-fed high school students are!

Instead of making their own decisions, which would invariably prepare them for real life experiences, administrators cull creative expression and positive decision making.

In the Spring of their senior year, students are asked to make decisions regarding where they will spend the remaining four years of their academic career.

This decision

will influence their experiences, along with the rest of their lives!

Going into college, students will need the basis of these experiences to be rooted in a stellar high school learning process.

From the moment they hop on the bus to start kindergarten, children are learning. They are forming their academic persona.

Without a doubt, decision making, along with the negation of creative expression, starts that moment they begin their education.

If we want our next generation to be successful leaders, and satisfactory people, we cannot treat them as babies, while demanding they make very advanced life choices.

Undefeated Salk Middle School’s eighth-grade softball team in Levittown had a perfect, undefeated season winning all 11 of their games. The Lady Seahawks played extremely tough games against Woodland and Grand Avenue, coming out on top in thrilling victories.

Outstanding fundamentals, teamwork and communication were key components in the team’s success.

In addition to a perfect record, pitchers Jessica Budrewicz and Megan

Sorg each pitched a nohitter during the course of the season. Budrewicz also pitched an extraordinary perfect game against Hicksville School District.

The team’s hard work and dedication throughout the entire season was the cause of their monumental achievement, resulting in an unforgettable season.

Coach Danielo congratulated the team on their impressive improvement and success, and wished them luck as they move on to

the MacArthur softball program next year.

Wantagh Middle School’s B.E.S.T Club raised $355 for the Nassau County Empire State Games for the Physically Challenged by collecting donations in front of King Kullen

grocery store.

As always, the Wantagh community was generous with their donations. This money helped to sponsor an athlete at the games held at the Mitchel Athletic

Complex and Nassau Community College on May 29th through 31st.

The district thanks the students for volunteering their time to raise money for this special cause.

AVIATION AWARDS - Thomas Reid, a Seaford High School senior and William Walsh, an East Meadow High School senior received The Marc Ferguson Aviation Award at the Nassau BOCES Barry Tech Certificate Ceremony. Thomas studied Aviation Operations at Barry Tech and will attend Nassau Community College. William who also studied Aviation Operations at Barry Tech will attend SUNY Farmingdale.

Celebrating Success Division Avenue High School in Levittown culminated the 20132014 school year with the annual Senior Awards Night to honor the school’s top seniors. During an evening of accolades seniors received awards and scholarship monies as their parents and community watched with pride.

Principal Joan Lorelli said recognizing students for their achievements is

one of the best rewards of her job. To the parents she said, “Your children are remarkable – they work hard, dream big and share their good fortune and goodness with others. Your encouragement, support and belief in the priority of a good education is integral to your child’s success.”

During the ceremony, staff and curriculum associates bestowed department awards and special senior

awards, while individual community members of various organizations honored recipients with scholarships. Valedictorian Savvas Papadopoulos and salutatorian Lyndsey Petrofsky were also formally acknowledged.

The Levittown School District congratulates the seniors on their accomplishments and continued success in the future.
