A Field Of Fun And Friendship

There were games, races and even some entertainment at Field Day at Martin Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District on June 2.

Each grade rotated through different stations which included gaga ball,

an obstacle course, tag and more. With summerlike temperatures, students didn’t mind getting a little wet in the water relay race, where they had to use sponges to move water from one bucket to the other at opposite sides of the course.

Students were also delighted by a bicycle trick show from the Freestyle Connection BMX Stunt Team. They particularly enjoyed watching one of the tricksters successfully complete a jump over a few of their teachers and Principal Jim O’Brien.

Science Olympiad

Competes At State Level

After capturing a thirdplace win at the regional level, the Wisdom Lane Middle School Science Olympiad team in the Levittown Public School District enjoyed a successful bout against other schools from throughout the state.

The Wisdom Lane Science Olympiad team competed in the New York State tournament in Syracuse on April 14 and 15. They excelled in six events for which they earned medals, placing them in 17th place among 250 schools.

World War II, Korean War And Vietnam Veteran Dies

Veteran, Loretta Weiss past away just one week before her 104th birthday. A party in her honor, sponsored the Jewish War Veterans, was scheduled to take place on June 2 which would have been her 104th birthday. Loretta Weiss was residing at The Long Island State Veterans Home in Stonybrook.

Prior to that Loretta lived in Flushing, Queens, New York.

The funeral took place on Sunday, May 28, 2023, the day before Memorial Day. Loretta Weiss was honored with a Flag draped coffin. There were several speakers including Jewish War Veterans Commander Gary Glick. The funeral

was attended by members of several different Veterans Organizations as well as friends and family.

Lorretta Weiss joined the army when she was 20 years old. She began her army career in Bloomfield, lllinois in August 1942 as a mail clerk, and worked her way up to becoming a Supply Sergeant. Loretta

welcomed challenges as opportunities taking on more responsibilities during her career in the military, She became a physical training Sergeant, conducting tests for the men and drills for the women’s marching unit. She was honorably discharged in 1945 She returned to serve during the Korean War and the during the Vietnam War from September 1950 until she was honorably discharged in February 1975. She was given numerous responsibilities, at a time when the Army was primarily made up of men, During her time in the army Loretta earned numerous commendations, ribbons, certificates of appreciation, and medals, including: The Victory Medal, the Army Occupation Medal Germany, National Defense Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster,

The Good Conduct Medal, The Army Commendation Medal with Second Oak Leaf Cluster, The American Campaign Ribbon, and The WAACS Service Ribbon, After leaving the service, she became involved with several Veteran’s organizations. She joined

the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the Jewish War Veterans and the Disabled American Veterans. She also became involved with local political organizations, so she could help make people aware of various Veteran’s issues.

Wantagh

After finishing up eighth grade, Wantagh Middle School’s newest graduates won’t have to go very far next year for high school. The bus will take them to and from the same street next year, but their experiences will be vastly different.

The middle school held its graduation ceremony for 224 eighth graders on June 12 in the gymnasium of their new school. Principal Anthony Ciuffo reflected on their achievements over the past three years, including the perseverance they demonstrated as they began middle school in 2020 at the height of the pandemic.

“This certainly was not an easy transition for you,” he told the graduates, “and I greatly admire how each of you persevered through these difficult times and made the best out of a bad situation. I am so happy that three years later, you’re able to participate in all of the exciting endof-year activities.”

Mr. Ciuffo said that even as they turn into young men and women, they shouldn’t turn

away from their beloved childhood activities –riding bikes, playing outside with friends, doing a cannonball into the pool, writing stories and drawing pictures.

“Play is not a luxury, play is a necessity,” he said in his advice to the departing eighth graders. “High school can get stressful at times, and the work load will certainly increase, but be sure you make time for yourselves to just enjoy the things that you have always enjoyed as kid.”

Students speakers took their classmates on a journey of middle school.

Nina Myers reflected on the challenges of sixth grade, when they came to a new school under pandemic restrictions, but finally got to experience middle school when they were allowed to change classes later in the year.

Lauren Feuer looked back on a more normal seventh grade and the joy they had when the masks finally came off, and finally knowing her friends by their faces instead of their eyes.

reminisced about this past year. Eighth grade memories included the pep rally, the Skittles vs. Starburst games, a great performance of the “Descendants” by the drama club and trips to

Disney World with their musical groups. His advice to his fellow graduates was “stay curious and try new things.”

The final speaker, Mairead Hill-Hotz, looked ahead to high school. She

said the future Wantagh High School Class of 2027 should feel confident to face new challenges.

“The path to Wantagh High School will open up a variety of opportunities,” she said. “While the

next chapter may seem daunting, we won’t be facing this journey alone. By our side, we’ll have our family and friends to offer us advice, listen to our concerns and provide moments of laughter.”

Serendipity: A Special Creative Forum For Breast Cancer Patients, Survivors And Caregivers On July 11

The Adelphi NY

Statewide Breast Cancer Program is offering a free guided art adventure for breast cancer patients, survivors and caregivers to light their creative sparks by making art through a variety of different techniques and mediums. The in-person workshop will be held on Tuesday,

July 11 from 10 am to 11:30 am at Adelphi University in Garden City (room details will be provided upon registration).

“Participants are encouraged to experiment with art and trust their imaginations,” says Kimberly Newman, BFA, the Marketing and Communications

Coordinator, for the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program, who will be offering a variety of different techniques and mediums during this forum.

Co-facilitating is social worker Angela M. Papalia, LMSW, Assistant Director, Adelphi Breast Cancer Program who says that learning and practicing

different breathing exercises will be part of the session. “These exercises will teach you how to disengage from distracting thoughts and sensations,” she says. Breathing exercises have many health benefits such as improving immunity, calming down anxiety, increasing sleep quality, improving

cardiovascular health, aiding in concentration, reducing inflammation, strengthening lungs and more.

The Junior Coalition of the Manhasset Women’s Coalition Against Breast Cancer, the Marilyn Lichtman Foundation and Northwell Health Cancer Institute are co-sponsors.

Registration is required to attend this free forum and space is limited to 40 participants. Art supplies will be provided for all exercises.
