Thirteen Wantagh High School science research students attended the annual 2017 Long Island Science Congress to discuss their research projects. Not only were each of the participants awarded ribbons for their research, students Samantha Cashton, Jaclyn Corbin and Kyleigh Watson received Honors Level Awards in recognition for their impressive presentation of research results.

of the Science Teachers Association of New York State, the Long Island Science Congress is an adjudicated exhibit of science projects by students of Nassau and Suffolk counties high schools and middle schools. The 2017 Long Island Science Congress took place at St. Anthony High School in Huntington Station on April 4th-5th with an award ceremony having been held on May 23rd.

During a second-grade lesson on chemistry principles, Mandalay Elementary School students in Wantagh applied their knowledge of mixtures, solutions and evaporation to the growth

of crystals.

Crystal kits were donated by the PTA with Scholastic Book Rewards, acquired through book purchases throughout the year.

After the crystals grew, students in Susan Boyle’s

Voices from the Past On May 25th, Wellington C. Mepham High School’s Voices from the Past class in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District presented their student-crafted, original work of theater titled “Voices from the Past.”

The production was designed and directed by the students of Voices from the Past, and the piece was performed in conjunction with student actors from Mepham’s Skull and Bones Drama Club. Co-teachers Edward Grosskreuz and Stu Stein produced and oversaw the entire undertaking.

“Voices from the Past showcases the voices of victims, survivors, perpetrators and witnesses — be they bystanders or upstanders — of genocide and human rights abuses

stretching from 1915 Armenia to the present,” said Stein. “The entirety of the play, with the exception of bits of added narration, is comprised of their real and true testimonies.

The play does not portray characters; it portrays people.”

The students conceived this play as their final project for the current school year. Over the course of the year, they studied the genocides in Armenia, Nazi Europe and Rwanda, to name a few, while also becoming informed about human rights violations including the Japanese internment camps of 1940s United States, modern slavery, child soldiers and human trafficking. What the students realized is that history continues to repeat itself as the lessons

of the past are forgotten or ignored. While the students understand that they cannot go out and entirely change the world, they hope they could use their newfound knowledge to inspire others to reconsider the way they treat others. Compassion and empathy are the best defense against hatred and apathy, Grosskruez and Stein explained.

“Ultimately, it is our responsibility to hear the voices from the past and to listen to their stories,” said Grosskreuz. “By using our voices in the present to echo these tales, we aim to inspire our audience — the voices of the future — to remember these people, the hardships they endured, and the lessons they gift to us.”

Steeplechase Addition Levittown’s MacArthur High School athletic department recently welcomed the addition of a steeplechase to its track and field events, making the school more marketable for hosting track and field events.

The steeplechase is an obstacle race in athletics, which derives its name

from the steeplechase in horse racing. During the event, runners must not only clear the obstacle, but must jump over a deep pit of water.

Keith Snyder, Levittown’s director of physical education, health and athletics, explained that more and more track and field athletes

are training for the steeplechase event and its addition allowed the district to host the Nassau County Championships on May 26th for the first time. He also noted that the obstacle was partially funded by the Mercury Club, the team’s booster club.

Town of Hempstead Concerts The Westbury-based federal credit union NEFCU is bringing music to the ears of Long Islanders this summer through its sponsorship of The Town of Hempstead Neighborhood Concert Series, a summerlong program that includes 23 free performances at 16 different venues beginning July 11th.

From Lawrence to Levittown, 16 different Town of Hempstead parks will host music concerts and performing arts events throughout the summer. The series predominantly features popular local bands and singers paying tribute to rock, pop and soul legends, but also includes a theater production of the Broadway musical “Hairspray” (July 11th at Newbridge Road Park in Bellmore), and a night of Irish music with the Emish Band (July 28th at Hewlett Point Beach in East Rockaway).

This year’s musical highlights will include the songs of Rascal Flatts (performed by Broken Roads on July 12th at East Village Green in Levittown), Billy Joel (performed by Songs in the Attic on July 26th at Merrick Road Park in Merrick), and Journey

(performed by Any Way You Want It on August 11th at East Village Green in Levittown). A special performance by Reflections, a tribute to the ladies of Motown, will be followed by a fireworks show (August 5th at Baldwin Park in Baldwin).

The summer-long concert series will conclude Friday, August 25th with Desert Highway, an Eagles tribute band, at Bellmore’s Newbridge Road Park. All performances will be held in rain or shine.

This year marks NEFCU’s first sponsorship of the popular concert series that the Town of Hempstead has been running for more than 40 years. World Youth Chess Representative Seventh-grader Katherine Qi of W.T. Clarke Middle School in the East Meadow School District has been selected as a United States Delegation representative for the 2017 World Youth Chess Championship in the girls under 14 section. She will compete in Montevideo,

Uruguay from September 16th through 26th.

According to its website, the nonprofit U.S. Chess Federation is the official governing body for chess players and chess supporters in America. Their mission is to empower people through chess and enrich

the lives of all persons and communities through increasing the play, study and appreciation of the game.

The district congratulates Katherine on being selected to represent the U.S. and wishes her much success at this prestigious competition.

Science Symposium Students, family members and the school community gathered at the Leon J. Campo Salisbury Center on May 18th for the East Meadow School District’s Science Symposium, where the science research projects of students from both district high schools were on display.

“The Science Symposium showcases the hard work, dedication and creativity of our high school Science Research students,” said Debra Harley, the district’s director of math and science. “These students have dedicated years

to experimenting and discovering new advances in science.”

W.T. Clarke High School senior Harsh Patel welcomed attendees to the event, thanking all of the parents, teachers and students for their support of and dedication to the Science Research program at both schools.

Following his remarks, nine seniors discussed the areas of study and findings of their three-year research projects, as well as the competitions they had entered and the awards they had earned with them.

The presentation ensued

with guests browsing more than 100 projects that demonstrated the high schoolers’ dedication and hard work.

The district extends special thanks to Harley, science department chairpersons Debbie Langone and Nicole Hiken from East Meadow High School and W.T. Clarke High School, respectively, and the science research teachers from both campuses for their support and guidance in assisting the students’ research projects and arranging this year’s symposium.

A Buggy Concert Under the baton of Bellmore chorus teacher Randi Andersen, Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center second-graders took to the stage to perform an array of musical selections entirely about bugs during the annual spring chorus for peers and parents.

The students donned sparkly antennae as they sang “Goin’ Buggy,” “The Honeybee Song,” “Inch Worm” and “Fuzzy Little

Caterpillar,” and utilized glow rings to light up the stage during a special performance of “Firefly, Firefly.”

The concert commenced with Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling” while students danced in the aisles.

The PTA donated the glow rings and supplies for the antennae, crafted by Leslie Cerverizzo. Teacher Mallory Cogen provided the choreography, which

Adoption Fees Waived It is said that “unconditional love is as close as your nearest shelter.” And, for residents of America’s largest township, the nearest facility is none other than the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter, which is hosting an entire “Summer of Love” pet adoption program to help find forever homes for the shelter’s dogs and cats.

Supervisor Anthony J. Santino is inviting all residents to take advantage of the “Summer of Love” program, as all pet adoption fees will be waived from Saturday, June 10th through Sunday, September 3rd. What’s more, newly adopted pets will be spayed/

neutered and receive ageappropriate vaccinations and microchipping, free of charge.

“The Town of Hempstead is committed to finding permanent homes for all of our shelter’s great dogs and cats,” stated Santino.

“We encourage residents to take advantage of free adoptions during the ‘Summer of Love,’ at the Town Animal Shelter.”

The town has also partnered with three local businesses that have been dedicated supporters of pet adoptions at the town’s animal shelter.

Dog Grooming by Rachel in Bellmore will provide a coupon for one free grooming for dogs. Island Trees Veterinary Hospital

in Hicksville will give coupons for a free exam and $25 toward veterinary services. Fido Fitness Club in Woodmere will provide a coupon for one free training class, as well as one half-day of “doggie daycare.”

Town Animal Shelter staffers and volunteers are available to assist prospective pet adopters.

The Hempstead Town Animal Shelter is located at 3320 Beltagh Avenue in Wantagh.

As a culmination of their work this year, 12thgraders at East Meadow High School presented their senior projects to fellow classmates, administrators and faculty at the school’s senior project fair.

Members of the Class of 2017 engaged in a reallife experience through an internship or community service placement over the course of the academic

year. As part of the initiative, they completed a minimum of 25 hours in their placement, recorded hourly logs and wrote a research paper about their experience. They volunteered their time in a variety of vocational fields, including animal care, business, cosmetology, carpentry, education, health and law.

When presenting at the fair, the seniors discussed

what they had learned and how the experience might impact their future as they begin their postsecondary plans.

The district congratulates the students for their dedication and diligence and thanks the East Meadow High School faculty, staff and administration for coordinating this exceptional program.

Senior Project Fair

Board of Education Meeting Recognitions and accolades abounded in the East Meadow School District on May 25th as the district’s board of education acknowledged outstanding students, administrators, fellow board members and community members during its communication meeting.

Throughout the evening, the Woodland Middle School vocal jazz ensemble, Meadowbrook Elementary School choir and advanced band, and George McVey Elementary School chamber orchestra performed for the board members, administrators, faculty and community residents in attendance.

Kicking off the recognitions, Board President Marcee Rubinstein presented Superintendent of Schools Leon J. Campo and Board Vice President Joseph Danenza with certificates of appreciation for their tireless efforts and ongoing commitment to advancing the success of the district.

The evening proceeded with Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Cindy Munter and Director of Music and Art and Kathryn Behr receiving the School District Partner of the Year Award from the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts. Since 2013, the district has set records for

attendance at the center by bringing nearly 5,000 students to see worldclass performances in dance, theater and art. The district has also established Enrichment Through the Arts, a powerful early childhood art literacy program, through the close collaboration of Munter, Behr and the Tilles Center. This program gives all district kindergartners an opportunity to explore the arts through teacherartist visits, theater performances and field trips.

Acknowledging three years of partnership, Stephanie Turner, director of Education and Outreach at the Tilles Center, said, “East Meadow is a district that understands that incorporating the arts into teaching and learning is a valuable practice. The arts have the power to make us sympathetic, aware and sensitive to the world around us.”

The attention then turned to veteran Angelo Auletta, who was presented with the Distinguished Service Award by Campo and the board for his bravery and devoted service to the U.S. during World War II. “It is a privilege to recognize individuals who served our country,” said Campo. “All of us are here today because of those who sacrificed to protect our

freedoms.”

Following, Robert Schoen, the Area 11 director of the New York State School Boards Association, presented Danenza with the Board Lifetime Achievement Award, NYSSBA’s highest recognition for a board member. Schoen also bestowed Rubinstein and trustee Brian O’Flaherty with the Board Mastery Award. All three members received these honors for continually striving to expand their knowledge and skills for better board governance by earning credit through NYSSBA training opportunities.

Concluding the evening, students in grades 6-8 were honored as the May and June “Terrific Kids,” in accordance with the East Meadow Kiwanissponsored program that recognizes sixth- through eighth-graders who continuously improve as individuals, students and community leaders.

Certificates of recognition were presented by the board, W.T. Clarke Middle School Assistant Principal Linda Lynch and Woodland Middle School Principal James Lethbridge.

“We are very proud of our Terrific Kids recipients,” said Campo. “They are role models who set an example for others, and who will be the leaders of tomorrow.”

Levittown MacArthur High School junior Jason Tramontana has been named a Rensselaer medalist for excellence in mathematics and science.

As a medalist, Jason will receive a $25,000 per year merit scholarship if he decides to enroll at the

prestigious Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Jason is a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club, Quiz Bowl and Mathletes and is enrolled in the district’s computer integrated manufacturing course.

He is also a member of

the school’s varsity baseball and volleyball teams.

Jason said he plans on pursuing a career in engineering and that he is seriously considering enrolling at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Dance Inductees Lauren Pereira of the Levittown UFSD, who studies dance at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), was inducted as an inaugural member of the LIHSA chapter of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts (NHSDA). She was recognized not only for her skill on the dance floor, but also for her academic achievements and leadership. As a founding member, Lauren was directly involved in the development of the new NHSDA chapter,

electing the founding officers and helping to plan the induction ceremony.

“These are high-achieving students with evolving artistry and a genuine interest in so many areas of the arts,” said Dina Denis-Paolucci, Head of the LIHSA Dance Department, who spearheaded the efforts to achieve this national recognition for her students.

“I’m really proud of all of you,” she told her students at the induction ceremony. “This is a huge accomplishment for

“Whether in class or on stage, LIHSA dancers prove every time how talented and technically advanced they are,” Chapter President Jared Stern said of his fellow NHSDA members. “They spend hours training, performing and perfecting their craft. Hybrid Theory I recently had the pleasure of attending the 2017 Press Club of Long Island Media Awards; this year, not only as a member of the Board of Directors, but as an award recipient.

Our Seasons Magazine was honored with second place in the Best Magazine category, a proud moment for our fledgling publication.

While there, I had the opportunity to chat with several local journalists in attendance about topics ranging from the state of the media as a whole to our own publication’s role in the journalism community on Long Island. It brought to light the question of what, exactly, South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers’ mission has been since 1953, and how very unique a position we fill in the wider landscape of community weeklies.

We have always categorized

ourselves as somewhat of a “hybrid” publication; far more news content than a shopper, but without the editorial staff of, say, a subscription-based community newspaper like those found in so many small towns in our area. While this description might be confusing to some, upon further explanation at the awards dinner, I saw the familiar nod of recognition – oh, that’s a pretty nice little niche you have there… Yes, yes it is.

As such, we invite the readers, those community members whom we serve, to contribute their own happenings, photos, upcoming events and more – all with the notion that, at no cost to them, they can be a part of our next publication.

Parents, teachers, coaches and scouting leaders are all welcome to participate in publicizing those individual
