Celebrating Men’s Health Hearing health affects a man’s lifestyle, and if he wants to stay active, feel younger and remain socially and professionally engaged, he should address any hearing loss he may be experiencing. This year, National Men’s Heath Week runs from June 10th through June 16th. To help men address their hearing health and determine if they need a comprehensive hearing test by a hearing healthcare professional , BHI is offering the free, quick, and confidential online BHI Hearing Check at www.hearingcheck.org. Studies show that men who address their hearing loss with the use of hearing instruments or other appropriate treatment and accommodations most often improve their quality of life because it helps them maintain a more engaged, active lifestyle at both work and home. Fortunately, the vast majority of people with hearing loss

can benefit from hearing instruments. In fact, eight out of ten hearing instrument users say they’re satisfied with the changes that have occurred in their lives specifically due to their hearing instruments. For decades, research has shown an association between unaddressed hearing loss and a whole range of physical, mental and emotional conditions-from depression, anxiety, and strained relationships to cognitive decline, difficulty learning new tasks, and even failing grades. A national BHI study, in fact, uncovered income loss as an under-recognized consequence of leaving hearing loss unaddressed. People with untreated hearing loss, the study found, lose as much as $30,000 in income annually, depending on their degree of loss. But the use of hearing instruments was found to reduce the risk of income loss dramatically-by 90 to 100 % for

those with milder hearing loss, and from 65 to 77% for those whose hearing loss was severe to moderate. The study also found that people with severe hearing loss who do use hearing instruments are twice as likely to be employed as their peers who don’t use them. In recent years, considerable information has emerged on the link between hearing loss and several common chronic diseases that men suffer-including heart disease, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and depression. While research is still needed to fully understand the association between hearing loss and these illnesses, this relatively new information makes it all the more important that men take the BHI Hearing Check and include hearing health as part of their routine medical care. Long Island Hearing and BHI remind men that there are simple things they can do to protect their hearing. Listening to smartphones and MP3 players only at a low volume, and wearing earplugs in noisy environments like sporting events, clubs, concerts, or when using power tools and riding motorcycles are examples. A Technological Transformation Many men enjoy and keep pace with the latest in consumer electronics. It’s surprising, then, to find that so many men are not fully aware of the technological revolution that has occurred in the hearing aid marketplace in the past few years. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness of recent advances holds many back from dealing with their hearing health. Here are four little-known facts about today’s modern hearing instruments that active, youthful-minded men should know: 1. They’re virtually invisible. Many of today’s hearing instruments sit discreetly and comfortably inside your ear canal, providing both natural sound quality, and discreet and easy use. 2. They automatically adjust to all kinds of soundscapes. Whether it’s the rustling of sheets and whispers on the pillow that you’re after, easy conversation in a crowded restaurant, or the chirp of crickets on a late summer’s evening, recent technological advances have made hearing instruments far more versatile that ever before and in a broad range of sound environments. 3. You can do water sports and sweat while wearing them. Waterproof, digital instruments have arrived. This new feature is built into some newly designed hearing instruments for those concerned about water, humidity and dust. This feature suits the active lifestyles of swimmers, skiers, snowboarders, intensive sports enthusiasts, and anyone working in dusty, demanding environments. 4. They love your smartphone, home entertainment system, and other prized electronics. Wireless, digital hearing aids are now the norm. That means seamless connectivity-directly into your hearing instrument at volumes that are just right for you-from your smartphone, iPod, television, and other beloved hightech gadgets. What’s more, you own the volume. No one around you needs to be affected. To be informed healthcare consumers, men need to realize that today’s state-of-the-art hearing instruments are highly effective, sleek, and sophisticated wearable electronics that can help them stay actively connected, not only to life, but also to their other prized electronics, from smartphone to home entertainment systems. Today’s hearing instruments make it quite simple for the young, middle age or older man who have hearing loss to better their lives thru amplification. Usually the only ones that know that you’re wearing them is you. Our advice, schedule a hearing test and speak to your Hearing Health Professional for direction. Long Island Hearing is an Audiology and Hearing Instrument Dispensing Practice with offices in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. They can be reached at 1.800.698.5200.

to “life as you know it.” It’s the same with graduations, with changes in residence or job – everything requires a period of adjustment. And then, without realizing it, there comes a day when you take a step back and realize that this has become the new norm. So here’s to that new norm, to sitting in the audience and being able to truly appreciate all the hard work and dedication that has gone into creating the spectacle before me. And if – no, when – I become nostalgic for my own time in the spotlight, I will call upon the 20 years of fond memories I was fortunate to be a part of... and smile.

As I write this column, this coming weekend will mark the first dance recital in nearly 20 years at my studio that I will not be a part of. For the first time, I will have the pleasure of viewing the entire three-hour extravaganza from the comfort of my very own auditorium seat. Sure beats racing back and forth between numbers and quick changes to stand – more like hover – near the door, hoping to catch a glimpse of three minutes or so... and then hightailing it backstage in time to line up for my own dance! But seating arrangements aside, there will of course

be that wistful, bittersweet sensation that, just last year (and nearly two thirds of my life before that) that used to be me up on stage, decked out in full costume, makeup, hair… the whole deal. (Oh, and glitter. Can’t forget glitter.) As with any transition, it is often met with mixed emotions – that sense of knowing when the time has come to move on, yet sadness that you will be leaving your comfort zone of people and places and things you have grown to expect as part of your life. Time does move on, things do change; and, in the end, you eventually grow used to the sometimes subtle, sometimes drastic alterations

highest levels of quality with a commitment to excellence and financial stewardship.” Prior to assuming executive leadership for St. Francis Hospital, The Heart Center®, in 1999 (and Mercy and St. Joseph more recently), Dr. Guerci - a nationally renowned cardiologist - was St. Francis’s executive vice president for medical affairs and director of research. Previously, he served as director of the Coronary Care Unit at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, as well as chairman of the Clinical Trials Review Committee of the Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health. At St. Francis, Dr. Guerci oversaw the largest expansion project in the hospital’s history, the first phase of which was completed in 2008 with the opening of the 158,000-square-foot Nancy and Frederick DeMatteis Pavilion. In October of 2012, St. Francis’s newly renovated Emergency Department (ED) was

unveiled - the region’s first “green” ED, featuring electrically operated privacy glass, high-efficiency light fixtures and other innovations to minimize the facility’s “footprint”. After graduating from Harvard College, Dr. Guerci earned his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College and a master’s degree in health care management from the Harvard School of Public Health. He completed postgraduate training as an intern, resident and chief resident at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in cardiology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he advanced to the rank of associate professor of medicine before joining St. Francis. In addition, he is an associate professor of clinical medicine at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University. Dr. Guerci resides in Sea Cliff with his wife, Leslie.

Tops In Community Service

The Levittown School District is pleased to announce that the Salk Middle School Builders Club, under the direction of adviser Jennifer Spiteri, has placed second internationally in the Builders Club Single Service Award competition. This designation is subsequent to the Builders Club’s first-place win on the New York State level. During an assembly, district administrators and staff, Board of Education President Michael Pappas, Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray, Hempstead Town Councilman Gary Hudes and Levittown Kiwanis Club President Glen Lachow congratulated the students on this honor and for their willingness to give back to the community.

“We take a lot of things for granted,” Councilman Hudes stated. “None of you took anything for granted, however, when it came to others.” The Builders Club is sponsored by Kiwanis International and is a service organization for middle school students. In March 2013, the Salk chapter hosted a fundraiser to support the Pennies for Patients Program for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. This fundraiser was selected in response to a teacher’s recent recovery from lymphoma. In total, the Builders Club raised $3,450.66 by encouraging the entire school to become involved. Each of the students received a certificate and pin, and the Town of Hempstead presented

the Builders Club officers with a citation. After the assembly, the club members and guests were SEMIFINALISTS RECOGNIZED - Nassau County Legislator Dave Denenberg treated to refreshments. recognized Intel Semifinalists Emma McNamara from Calhoun High School in Merrick, Corey Wald from Mepham High School in North Bellmore, and Josh Pollock from Kennedy High School in Bellmore during the “Point of Privilege” section of the Legislative Session held Monday, April 22nd, at the Legislature building in Mineola.

Kathy’s Fun Night

The faculty and parents of the Gardiners Avenue Mustangs and the Lee Road Roadrunners invite the Levittown community to attend the fourth annual Kathy’s Fun Night, a fundraiser to support the Kathleen Catalano Memorial Award. This night of performances, games and raffles will take place at Salk Middle School at 3359 Old Jerusalem Road in Levittown on June 10th from 7 to 9 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children.

LAW & ORDER AWARDS - The Merrick American Legion Post 1282 Law & Order Awards Ceremony was recently held at the Merrick American Legion Post Hall on Sunday, April 21st. Pictured: Nassau County American Legion Commander Joseph Reale, Presiding Officer Norma Gonsalves, Legislator Dave Denenberg, Post Commander Edward Sholander, Joseph Ambrosino, James O’Neill, Det. John Barnett, Capt. John Antimisiaris, Ex-Capt. Ryan Cassidy and Capt. Ronnie Gies.

SPECIAL CITATION - Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos recently presented a citation to NFL Hall of Famer Curtis Martin. Martin recently visited John F. Kennedy High School, where he signed autographs to raise funds for Hurricane Sandy victims in Bellmore-Merrick.

SCOUTS HONOR - Nassau County officials gathered to congratulate Eagle Scout Anthony Sarlo of Wantagh as he was honored for achieving the highest rank in scouting. Pictured: Nassau County Legislator David Denenberg, Anthony’s parents Michael and Joyce Sarlo, Anthony Sarlo, Nassau County County Clerk Maureen O’Connell, Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos and Nassau County County Executive Representative Steve Rhoads.

Key Club Inductees

Under The Sea from The Little Mermaid, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious from Mary Poppins and Aladdin’s A Whole New World.

SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT - The NUMC emergency department staff participates in a softball game every year against the East Meadow Fire Department for EMS Week – Mary Harms was the coach, and Dr. Boutin, chair of the emergency department, was the star player and captain. This year, the team was dedicated to Rosanna Pietrafesa, the ED nurse who recently passed away. Her brother, sister-in-law and nephews attended the game. This year, NUMC won!

A new group of Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Center Key Club officers were inducted at the Levittown Memorial Education Center as retiring officials prepare to graduate. The May 2013 induction ceremony took place in the school’s Panther Room, complete with an audience filled with Key Club members and proud parents. With speeches from advisors Lillian Creedon, David Cummo and Ann Torcivia, the ceremony honored the club’s retiring officers and congratulated those newly inducted. In an especially heartfelt

moment, retiring Key Club President Victoria Capone handed off an official Key Club sweatshirt to the newly inducted president, Bridget Glennon. During the ceremony, retiring officers spoke warmly of their time in Key Club. Although retiring Treasurer Annelise Prendergast and retiring Vice President Brittany Bufinsky could not attend, Capone, Secretary Daniel Kuch, and Editor Anthony Mendes happily wished the new officers luck in their appointed roles. The incoming GC-Tech Key Club officers include Bridget Glennon, who will

serve as president, and Nicole Giacinto and Emilie D’Hedouville, the new covice presidents. Charmy Patel proudly accepted the role of Key Club secretary. The treasurer position went to Melissa Pierre, while Jasmine Tarnagorski stepped in as editor. Each new officer was inducted by Mrs. Creedon in front of a display that presented the club’s past accomplishments. The Levittown School District congratulates each of the new G.C. Tech Key Club officers and new inductees.

Wonderful calming day At peace in every way Just sitting here alone Not even thinking about the telephone Not a care It is as if no one else is there

What Is Your Favorite Sensation? By: Robert L. Macchia, West Babylon Is it the hand of your loved one holding yours, Is it a new babe in arms, soft and pure, Is it the voice of your child talking sweetly, Both of these a bad day can cure…

“Fuzzy Friend” Photo by: Regina Rene Ambrosio, Deer Park

Can it be the voice of your grandparent, Calling you on the phone, A voice you never expected, When you were feeling all alone… Can it be the sensation, Of finding a long lost friend, A person out of your life for years, You never expected to see again… Maybe finding a keepsake, That was missing for years, With so much sentimental value, That it brought you to tears… No matter what sensation, Your heart may choose, There is always a special sensation, We never want to lose…..

What Is Crew? in boats dubbed “Shells,” can either be solo or in groups of 2, 4 or 8. I am on a boat consisting of eight, who have been rowing together for St. John the Baptist DHS in West Islip for three years, with friendship being a crucial factor to success. A few weekends ago, my boat competed at the Long Island Championships, held in Oyster Bay. Larger boats are allotted a coxswain, whose job is quite complex. This lightweight coxswain must steer the boat, as well as motivate his crew and, ultimately, win the race. He is truly the core of a first-class boat. Rowers either scull or sweep, with the former using two smaller oars, one in each hand. A sweep rower is almost always in a larger

boat, with the exception being a pair. A sweep rower has one oar and must maintain balance, while still ensuring textbook technique and absolute power. As a rower, I can truly appreciate the physical strength and endurance that an athlete partaking in this sport must command. Most rowers train both on a rowing machine and on the water 5-7 days a week and are extremely dedicated to the pursuit of a gold medal. For the countless hours an athlete puts in throughout the year, he or she is rewarded with less than 10 races, each consisting of less than 6 minutes. It takes a focused mindset to be a rower, but if you can handle the sport, the benefits are endless.

Tyler Cianciulli of Islip is a Junior at St. John the Baptist High School. Please feel free to share your feedback with him at: tylercianciulli@gmail.com

During the Olympics, have you ever wondered what that funny sport with the 8 identical giants in spandex rowing a boat in sync was? Crew, or rowing, is an elitist sport that is gaining popularity due to both its difficulty and its beauty. Around since 1430 BC, Crew is one of the world’s oldest sports. Originating as a punishment for prisoners and as the alternative to a sail, rowers were forced to row for hours on end. Today, Crew is no longer revered for the practicality of transportation, but for the intricacy of technique and the adrenaline of competition. The sport of rowing consists of a crew of oarsmen and, in some cases, a coxswain. The rowers, who are arranged

HAPPILY EVER AFTER

“Your Gildersleeve is my Roger” the words were barely audible through tears and cries of Roger’s name. After having been missing for more than a year from Lindenhurst and turning up on Route 110 in Amityville, Roger, an almost 11 year-old cat was on his way home thanks to a little good fortune and the help of South Bay’s Neighbor Pet’s Place. Charlene Brass recognized her long lost cat’s photo in the April 16th

issue of the paper the day the Babylon Shelter photo was published. This photo was definitely her cat, Roger, who had disappeared in March 2012. Charlene looked for Roger for months and visited the shelter several times searching for him. Lost pet reunions like this, especially cat reunions, only happen once or twice a year; yet, each time one does, it reminds distraught owners never to give up hope.
