Salk Middle School Designated NYS School To Watch

Levittown’s Jonas E. Salk Middle School recently received the prestigious honor of being designated as a Middle Level NYS School To Watch. The designation, a recognition by the New York State Essential Elements: Schools To Watch Program, recognizes schools that demonstrate

continuous improvement and excel in academic excellence, developmental responsiveness, social equity, and organizational structure.

Salk Middle School was first designated by New York State as a School To Watch in 2018. Principal John Zampaglione went to Albany in May to

receive Salk’s certificate of re-designation after the application was approved by the board at the NYS Middle School Association.

The Levittown School District congratulates Salk Middle School students and staff for achieving this distinction.

Abbey Lane Girl Scouts Dedicate Buddy Bench To School

Girl Scouts Troop 3732, comprised of students from Abbey Lane Elementary School in the Levittown Public School District, decorated and dedicated a bench to their school that encourages kind acts. The girls started planning on the design

for the bench in February as part of their Bronze Project and are finally able to unveil it to all their peers during lunch periods. The Buddy Bench features the handprints of all troop members as well as positive and encouraging words. Those looking for a

buddy can sit on the bench, and Abbey Lane peers will come to greet them. The girls also produced a video for the project and created a kindness-themed bingo game with bracelet prizes. The bench

The Charity of the Month for June is America’s VetDogs

America’s VetDogs is a non-profit organization that trains and provides service and guide dogs for veterans, active-duty military, and first responders with disabilities in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and beyond. Their national headquarters are located right on Long Island in Smithtown, NY. This year, America’s VetDogs is celebrating their 20th anniversary!

In the early 2000s, the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind, founded in 1946, recognized not only the growing need for specialized service dogs that could help wounded service-members, but also that aging veterans could also benefit from a specially trained service dog. America’s VetDogs was then founded as a program of the Guide Dog Foundation and later became an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit. In 2015, first responders with work-related disabilities were added to the individuals served.

Today, the organization supports those they serve with an uncompromised commitment to excellence, from highly empathetic and certified trainers to meticulously constructed curriculum delivered during a two-week, inresidence training program, followed by a lifetime of aftercare support. It costs more than $50,000 to breed, raise, train and place one assistance dog, but services are always provided free to the individuals served.

The dogs they train are taught specialized tasks and skills such as retrieval of dropped items, positional cues to extend their handler’s personal space when in a crowded setting, counterbalance, nightmare interruption, pressing buttons

A hallmark of America’s VetDogs is the meticulous matching process to ensure that each program participant is matched with a dog that best suits their mobility, personality and lifestyle.

The organization has many high-profile partnerships, which include NBC’s The Today Show, New York Islanders, New York Mets, Washington Capitals, Houston Texans, Contour Mortgage, Deloitte, and Voya. Their best known client was former President George H.W. Bush, who was matched with his service dog, Sully H.W. Bush, who is now a facility dog at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

No organization in the nation provides the depth of personalized services that America’s VetDogs o ers. They truly deliver the highest quality experience to those who served and continue to serve our nation with honor.

MTAC & YES CCC Deliver Naloxone Training Across The Massapequa Fire Departments

Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC) is partnering with YES

Community

Counseling Center (YESCCC) and The Massapequa Fire Departments to provide Opioid Abuse and Overdose Prevention Education for members of the Massapequa and North Massapequa Fire Departments, their families, and concerned community members.

Expanding the awareness and availability of naloxone is a key part of YESCCC and MTAC’s public health response to the opioid overdose crisis. YESCCC continues to deliver FREE opioid prevention education and naloxone training with kits across the Massapequas. Naloxone is an opioid antagonist that is used to temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, namely slowed or stopped breathing. Naloxone is a safe antidote to a suspected overdose and, when given in time, can save a life (Surgeon General of the United States Public Health Service).

Helen Martin & Trade Winds Scholarships For Achievement 2023

At least two $1,000.00 Scholarships will be awarded to students who have had personal experience with homelessness. Students must be a current resident of Nassau or Suffolk County (unless already enrolled in college or trade school elsewhere, with a previous residence in Nassau or Suffolk Counties), and have attended elementary, middle and/or high school in Nassau or Suffolk Counties.

Applicants must enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study or other licensed vocational program no later than the fall session of 2024.

Complete packages must be received by 12:00 p.m. on Friday, June 15 and must include each of the following:

-Student Application

-Letter(s) of Recommendation

-Essay

-School Transcript; documentation of GED Completion (if applicable)

Incomplete and late packages will not be considered.

How scholarship recipients are chosen

• Grade point average 2.0 or higher (“C” average)

• Quality of essay

• Letter(s) of recommendation –minimum of two are required

• Review and selection by the Helen Martin Scholarship Committee

If you are selected to receive a scholarship

• You will be notified by July 31, 2023.

Ed Freeberg Honored As Grand Marshal Of East Meadow Memorial Day Parade

Veteran, Ed Freeberg was selected as the Grand Marshal of the East Meadow Memorial Day Parade.

Ed was inducted in the Air Force on May 27, I966. He began his basic training at Lackland Air Force Base during the Memorial Day weekend. His Tech training was at Amarillo Air Force Base where he became an Inventory Management Specialist. His next assignment was at McGuire Air Force Base where he was involved with computerizing the Base inventory. This was successfully completed in record time and was used as a model for computerizing other Bases around the world.

He is married to Leah Frankel and they will be celebrating their 30th Anniversary later this year.

Ed is an active, Lifetime, member of the Jewish War Veterans, Post 652 and a board member of his local Synagogue.

The parade started at East Meadow High School and concluded at Veterans Memorial Park in East Meadow. A Memorial Day Ceremony took place there to remember and honor the Veterans who gave their lives for our country. Many Veterans organizations including the Jewish War Veterans, had Wreaths to honor and memorialize our fallen heroes.

Ed Freeberg was awarded a Citation from the New York State Assembly by Nassau County Legislator, Tom Mckevitt for being selected Grand Marshal of the parade.

and their dedication, and to thank them for their sacrifices. Today is an opportunity to tell the stories of these brave men and women and make sure that these stories are not forgotten. They came from all walks of life and by virtue of their service and sacrifice are extraordinary individuals. Today we gather at cemeteries, monuments, and parks all over the country, we march in parades in cities big and small, to honor the loyalty and bravery of our fallen men and women.

I would ask that you not only remember those we honor today at this ceremony, but to also remember our military who are deployed around the world defending our freedom. Please keep them and their families, safe and in your thoughts as well.
