Adolescence can be a trying time for teenagers and their parents.

According to the American Psychological Association, parents and caregivers face an entirely new set of tasks to deal with the changing needs of children as they reach adolescence. The changes that accompany adolescence include physical, cognitive and social changes, and parents may need to adopt an entirely new approach to parenting as they deal with the changing needs of their children during their period in their lives. The APA notes that adolescents often crave greater independence and autonomy, and this desire is a natural part of their development process. It’s important that parents of adolescents find a way to maintain the familial bonds they and their children have developed up to this point, while also allowing increasingly mature teens a level of autonomy that can benefit them throughout their lives. How To Clean When Faced With A Shortage Of Supplies In light of concerns about COVID-19, various health organizations have issued specific instructions on how to maintain personal safety and cleanliness. These recommendations involve using common household products to sanitize homes, offices and public spaces. As people take such precautions, many are stocking up on extra

essentials - resulting in shortages.

Everything from hand sanitizers to paper towels may be hard to find on grocery store shelves, leaving some to wonder what they can do to remain safe without sanitizers?

The Environmental Protection Agency states that coronaviruses are some of the easiest types of viruses to kill because

they have an envelope around them that enables them to merge with other cells and infect them. If that protective coating can be disrupted, the virus can’t do its job. For those having trouble finding well-known cleaning agents, these alternatives may suffice.

Not all bird baths are constructed in the same fashion.

Many bird baths sold in stores are better suited for decoration than for serving as functional baths.

There are four general types of bird baths: standing pedestal, hanging bath, deck-mounted, and ground-level. In general, the lower a bird bath is to the ground, the more likely birds are to use it. Most natural sources of water birds use are on or near the ground. Therefore, groundlevel bird baths may be the best investments.

It is important to keep the water in a bird bath shallow (around two inches of water or less). This enables birds to splash

around safely and wade in.

Birds do not want to slide around, so a material that is coated and slippery, like glazed ceramic or glass, may not be too popular. Rough stone or a bird bath modified with pea gravel or rocks can give birds steady footing.

Place the bird bath in the shade if possible to ensure the water is cool and fresh. Locate it by a tree so the birds can hop up to a branch and preen afterwards. All About Birds also says that a bird bath is more attractive if it has a dripping or moving water feature, as this is often irresistible to birds.

Another way to ensure the bath will be used, is to keep it clean and maintained. Change the water every day or two. Rinse off the bath to remove droppings, bugs and other debris.

Once birds learn there is a comfortable bath nearby, they may be more apt to visit a yard and may even become frequent guests.

With museums closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, art museums throughout the world are providing opportunities for patrons to browse their collections online. The J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles went one step further by asking viewers to choose a masterpiece and to re-enact the work at home in an activity called the Getty Challenge.

Wantagh Elementary School art teacher Laura Pashayan could not resist the opportunity to have her students participate in the challenge. She instructed

her students to peruse the museum website for their favorite piece of artwork and to re-enact the scene using materials at home.

Some of the artwork chosen by the students included Edvard Munch’s “The Scream,” Norman Rockwell’s “Girl at the Mirror,” René Magritte’s “The Son of a Man,” and Grant Wood’s “American Gothic.”

In an Instagram posting by the museum, students participating in the challenge were better able to identify and understand famous works of art, and

Showcasing Talent Virtually Bowling Green Elementary School in the East Meadow School District held a virtual talent show for English as a New Language and reading students on May 14. ENL teacher Jaclyn Goldstein was inspired by a student who showed off his guitar skills during a virtual meeting when schools first closed.

“Many of our students have talents, but never had the opportunity to share

them with their peers,” said Goldstein. “That was when I realized this was a silver lining for distance learning.” Goldstein and fellow Bowling Green ENL and reading teachers Eleni Batanchiev, Melissa Diamond, Kaitlin Keenan and Jennifer Roman collaborated and planned a virtual talent show for their students.

Prior to the show, Goldstein made safe, socially distant visits to her

students’ homes to deliver popcorn, a certificate of participation and special trophies. Students then participated virtually via Google Meet, with classmates, teachers and administrators serving as the audience. From dancing to video gaming, the students shared their talents, connecting with one another in a meaningful way.

Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. Eileen has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for over 30 years, however she has experience in many other industries as well. She has worked with corporate America, nonprofits, academia and local grassroots organizations. She is well-rounded and truly one of the kindest people I have ever met.

In 2010, Eileen began volunteering, offering free haircuts to people in need.

Eileen felt so overjoyed by helping others look and feel beautiful for free while working within various types of socio economic communities, that she eventually began her very own traveling salon. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes To You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon now serves an abundance of people across Long Island.

As a licensed hair professional, Eileen has a following of paying customers, however her real passion lies with helping those who are not able to afford a haircut or hair process. Sometimes something as simple as gaining a new look can help a person feel better about him or herself and gain confidence again. Eileen generously and freely gives people that opportunity.

She also incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products.

During these trying times when only essential businesses are operating, Eileen has shifted her focus to helping the homless community, a group she feels extremely passionate for. She has been bringing homeless individuals food, clothes, blankets, shoes, etc. to help them feel loved and cared for.

Although she actively helps homless people throughout Long Island, she focuses a lot in East Meadow, a community she finds to have a large homeless population. “I’m one person trying desperately to make a difference,” says Eileen. “The ‘not in my backyard’ mentality needs to be a thing of the past!”

Her clients, along with local restaurants have donated food, gently used clothes, blankets, shoes and more for her to distribute. The homeless community needs attention and assistance and together we can give them the help they need.

One way we can start is by donating food, clothes, shoes, blankets, socks or any other important items to Eileen for her to distribute. She visits homeless individuals twice a day and any donations received will be handed out to those in need.
