The Charity of The Month for May is: Guardians of Rescue Guardians of Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Their mission is to facilitate and foster programs and activities that further the unique benefits of interaction between people and animals.

We are all aware of the toll that this pandemic is having on people, yet the impacts are being felt beyond humans.

Animals are also being impacted in numerous ways by this situation.

Guardians of Rescue has been dealing with the Covid Crisis in many different ways, such as helping people feed their pets and taking on the responsibility to care for homeless animals. They have even stepped out of their realm of helping animals to assist seniors during these trying times.

They are overwhelmed by the amount of assistance needed and their phones are ringing non-stop. So many people have had their employment impacted by the virus, therefore donations have been down. This makes it difficult for them to continue feeding the animals, building doghouses, taking in new rescues and trying to cover all their expenses.

“The pandemic has created a host of problem for the animals,” says Robert Misseri, President of this organization.

“I hope that we can make it through this difficult time, so that we can continue to help the animals in need.”

Robert is also the President of Paws of War, another non-profit right here on Long Island. This organization trains and places shelter dogs to serve and provide independence to our U.S. military veterans that suffer from the emotional effects of war. In turn, each veteran can experience the therapeutic and unconditional love only a companion animal can bring.

Throughout this pandemic, they have been tending to the most at risk veterans.

They find that their older senior veterans typically are very prideful and refuse to ask for any handouts. Many live alone and will still go out and put themselves at risk

to get food for their pets. However, Paws of War will at times arrive at their homes with no warning, knock on their door and tell them that they have some items to drop off for them. “You always see that tear in their eye” says Robert. “That someone actually cares enough to come to their home and bring them something is very special.”

A lot of these veterans suffered for many years, all of which now have lifelong disabilities due to their service to our country. Paws of War feels that at the very least they can bring them pet food to give them a helping hand during these tough times.

Additionally, Paws of War has partnered with Cambridge Catering, who is providing hot cooked meals free of charge to our veterans. Hank, a Smithtown resident and veteran, was someone that Paws of War helped. When they arrived at his home, they noticed a his two very proud flags were destroyed.

They handed off the pet food and trays of hot food that Cambridge Catering has provided, but they didn’t stop there.

They then went to the hardware store and purchased everything to fix and replace his flags.

People are unable to grieve the loss of loved ones in ways they are used to. No wakes for Christians. No shivas for Jews. No three-day mourning periods for Muslims.

That’s why Long Island’s two leading, county-based mental health organizations have begun offering online bereavement support groups designed to provide comfort, support, and “grief tools” to those who have lost loved ones to the COVID-19 virus. Mandatory social distancing has sharply curtailed people’s ability to grieve in conventional, in-person settings. In the absence of the intimate contact typically associated with the mourning process, these remote, weekly bereavement sessions aim to mollify the pain of individuals whose family members or close friends have succumbed to COVID-19.

The “COVID-19 Bereavement Support Group” initiative is hosted by the Suffolk County-based Association for Mental Health and Wellness and the Mental Health Association of Nassau County.

Guided by experienced grief counselors, the groups will convene remotely in 60or 90-minute sessions via a secure Zoom line over the course of a four- or six-week period.

There is no cost to take part and registration – which is limited to 12 participants per group – is on a first-come basis.

“As everyone can imagine, losing a loved one to the virus is a deeply painful and jarring experience,” said Michael Stoltz, C.E.O. of the Association for Mental Health and Wellness, which is headquartered in Ronkonkoma. “We’ve identified skilled and sensitive grief counselors who are well qualified to help participants build comforting pathways for healing, even in a technologically remote setting.”

“The pandemic’s restrictions largely prevent mourners from experiencing the reassuring feelings of hugs and other types of close-up contact,” said Jeffrey McQueen, Executive Director of the Hempstead-based Mental Health Association of Nassau County. “Grieving remotely can’t fully replace the face-to-face experience, but it can help reinforce feelings of hope and help fill the void.”

Participants in any of the five COVID-19 Bereavement Support Groups must be mourning the loss of a family member or close friend who has died from COVID-19.

The group categories are: Grieving Adults Support Groups: For people who have lost a loved one to coronavirus and cannot grieve in person with their loved ones. The group will bring together others who are struggling to come to terms with the loss, to create a sense of closure, and to grieve in community. There will be two groups in this category.

Peer Bereavement Support Group: For individuals experiencing a mental health condition who have lost a loved one to coronavirus. Participants have a safe and supportive space to share their stories with others who can truly relate to their pain and experiences.

Veterans Bereavement Support Group: For Veterans and their families who have lost someone to coronavirus and cannot grieve in person with their loved ones. This group will deal with issues specific to the Veterans community.

Creative Arts Bereavement Support Group: The making of art can serve as a safe outlet for the expression of thoughts and emotions relating to death and loss. By expressing these feelings in a symbolic manner, mourners can nurture their sense of control, organization, and containment. Participants may use such art supplies as copy paper, colored pencils, markers, crayons, scissors, and glue.

This change in routine leads to many questions from children who want to know why they can’t attend school or spend time with their friends.

Providing answers to inquisitive youngsters can be challenging for parents, trying to balance sharing information without unnecessarily alarming their kids.

“With schools closed and many parents working at home temporarily, children will want to know what is causing the changes to what they perceive as normal life,” said Catholic Health Services Chairman of Behavior Health Ronald Brenner, MD. “Also, mobile technology gives many young people access to news and information, which could overwhelm them and cause anxiety.”

The New York State Office of Mental Health offers several suggestions for parents speaking to their kids about coronavirus.

- Think about and rehearse scripts for discussing coronavirus with their children. Kids take cues from caregivers about how anxious they should be about a topic.

- Discuss the situation openly.

Avoiding the

topic or providing blanket responses may fuel anxiety.

- Don’t give more information then is requested.

Check to make sure your children understand your response by asking them to repeat back what they have heard and let them know you are open to more questions.
