Moriches Field Brewing Company received $18,750 to revitalize an empty downtown space.

(Cheers to that.)

Revitalization grants are just one of the ways we help businesses on Long Island and in the Rockaways. For Moriches Field Brewing Company, a grant from our economic development program was a perfect fit to help them renovate a previously vacant property. A discount through our Vacant Space Revival Program saved them more than $4,000 on their electric bills, and rebates for upgrading to LED lighting are keeping them saving month after month.

Helping revitalize our Island, one business at a time, is something we’re proud to be part of and something definitely worth celebrating.

Calhoun Leadership Students Spread Anti-Hate Message

Students from the Senior Leadership class at Sanford H. Calhoun High School presented to the seventh grade social studies classes at Merrick Avenue Middle School on the power of symbols and the difference between positive symbols, negative

symbols and those symbols which represent hate.

Teacher Brian Joyce helped students hone their lessons, which incorporated video lessons and question and answer prompts. Ten student volunteers visited various classrooms on April 27.

“We want to spread awareness to the district so that students are more well educated on this topic,” said Gabriela Castillo.

“Another goal is to make sure school stays an inclusive environment,” added Sophia Philis.

They also educated

students on hate crime and hateful vandalism laws, as well as the meaning behind a swastika and why its imagery denotes a negative and hateful connotation.

“Whether or not you feel what it represents, it still hurst others,” said Noah Paymer. “And actions have

consequences, especially when it comes to symbols such as these.”

“When you draw a hate symbol, it portrays something that can really hurt another individually emotionally,” added Thomas Morash.

They are later visiting

eighth grade classes with a similar message.

“This is the second year having lessons and we wanted whole building to get the same message how hate and intolerance can lead to serious problems,” explained Christina Cone, a social studies chairperson.

Jewish Women In The Military Exhibit

The Jewish War Veterans, Post 652, has made arrangements with Don Clavin, Supervisor of the Town of Hempstead and his staff to have a free exhibit in their Lobby entitled Jewish Woman in the Military. The exhibit runs through the month of May which is Jewish Heritage Month. The building is open from 9am to 5 pm Monday to Friday and is located at 1 Washington Street, Hempstead, NY. There is free parking in their parking lot in the rear of the building. The exhibit includes pictures and stories of Jewish Women in the military from the World War I through the 1990’s. The exhibit shows some of the important jobs that woman have in the military. The U.S. Government has recognized the important roles that women have in the military in numerous ways including honoring them with a postage stamp entitled Women in the Military.

Interesting Facts About Memorial Day

Interesting facts about Memorial Each year on the last Monday of May, Americans celebrate Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a federal holiday that honors and mourns American military personnel who died while performing their duties in service to the United States Armed Forces. Memorial Day has a rich history and one that’s worth revisiting as the nation prepares to honor the sacrifices made by its military personnel over the centuries.

• Freed slaves played a role in the establishment of Memorial Day. The American Civil War is the deadliest military conflict in American history, as the Union and the Confederacy each suffered more than 800,000 casualties by the time the war ended in 1865. According to History.com, as the war drew to a close, hundreds of Union soldiers who were being held as prisoners of war died and were buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp in South Carolina. After the Confederate surrender, more than 1,000 now-freed slaves honored those recently deceased Union soldiers during a ceremony where they sang hymns and distributed flowers. The ceremony was dedicated to the fallen soldiers and served as a precursor to what is now celebrated as Memorial Day.

• Confederate soldiers were honored, too. Confederate losses during the Civil War outnumbered Union losses, and those losses were not forgotten by Southerners who survived the war. History.com notes that, in 1866, the Georgiabased Ladies Memorial Association, one of many similar organizations to arise in the aftermath of the war, pushed for a day to honor fallen Confederate soldiers. In fact, these efforts are believed to have

influenced General John A. Logan. In 1868, General Logan, a Civil War veteran who was then serving as commander-in-chief of a group of Union veterans, ordered the decoration of Union graves with flowers on May 30. The day would ultimately be known as “Memorial Day.”

• It took a long time for Memorial Day to become a federal holiday. Despite tracing its origins to the immediate aftermath of the Civil War, Memorial Day did not become an official federal holiday until 1971, more than a century after the war ended. This is the same year the holiday was officially designated as taking place on the last Monday in May. The designation has periodically drawn the ire of veterans and military supporters who suggest it is now more widely seen as the unofficial beginning of summer and not a day in which the sacrifices of fallen U.S. soldiers are honored to the extent that they should be.

• Debate exists about which town has the longest history of celebrating Memorial Day. A handful of towns claim to be the first celebrants of Memorial Day. That debate figures to continue in perpetuity, but History.com notes that Waterloo, New York, was officially recognized by U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson as the birthplace of Memorial Day in 1966. Doylestown, Pennsylvania, and Rochester, Wisconsin, are some other towns that claim to have celebrated Memorial Day since the mid-1860s.

Memorial Day has a rich history that highlights the importance of honoring the men and women who have given their lives while in service of the United States military.

New Playground Unveiled At Meadowbrook Elementary School

On May 12, the student council at Meadowbrook Elementary School in East Meadow held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for their state-of-the-art playground.

Students, teachers and district administrators attended the celebration as members of the student council spoke about the school’s new playground. Each student council

All residents of Levittown and beyond were invited to visit Summit

Lane after school hours to donate blood facilitated by the New York Blood Center as part of the Little Doctors Program. Student volunteers directed guests on where to go to while donning Little Doctors T-shirts. From the 39

donations received, 117 lives will be saved. Blood donors also received thank-you cards handmade by students. The annual event made its return to Summit Lane this year and will continue to be offered in the years to come.

Artists Unveil Work At Exhibition

Three students from Gardiners Avenue Elementary School in the Levittown Public School District were selected to present their artwork alongside students from throughout Nassau County during a recent exhibition.

Gardiners Avenue students G. Rinaldi, Nicolette Sabbagh and Gabriel Kilduff used their artistic skills to express themselves through drawings. The artwork included impressive interpretations of real-life

scenes and a self-portrait by Nicolette, which was also painted. Their work was presented during the 19th annual All-County Art Exhibition, hosted by the Art Supervisors Association in Long Beach.

Her Songs Broke Every Record, Her Story Broke Every Barrier

She was a girl from Boston with a voice from heaven, who shot through the stars from gospel choir to dance floor diva. What the world didn’t know was how Donna Summer risked it all to break through barriers, becoming the icon of an era and the inspiration for every music diva who followed. With a score featuring more than 20 of Summer’s classic hits including “Love to Love You Baby,” “Bad Girls” and “Hot Stuff,” this electric experience is a moving tribute to the voice of a generation.
