Learning a Lesson

Bowling Green Elementary School fifthgraders in the East Meadow School District learned about the hazards of tobacco during a “Tobacco Control” assembly led by nurses from the Center for Tobacco Control at North Shore University Hospital.

Organized by Bowling Green social worker Steven Sacks, fifth-graders gathered in the school’s all-purpose room to learn about the various forms of tobacco, chemicals added to cigarettes, the addictive drug nicotine and ways to live a healthy lifestyle.

During the assembly, North Shore nurses Andrea Spartamella and Christine Fardellone engaged students in activities that taught them about the detrimental effects that smoking tobacco has on their health. Students compared the labels of a pack of cigarettes and a bag of popcorn, learning that cigarette packs do not contain a list of ingredients. In another activity, students were given a visual of the chemicals found in a cigarette by pulling out objects representing the

dangerous substances from a giant plastic cigarette. Objects included mothballs, a miniature racecar to symbolize carbon monoxide and a bottle of Clorox to represent ammonia.

Concluding the

assembly, the students discussed ways to help people quit smoking, stand up to peer pressure, and keep the heart healthy by avoiding sugar, eating balanced meals and exercising for 60 minutes every day.

It was a barnyard affair at Birch School in the Merrick School District when kindergartners recently performed two shows of “The Mitten” and “The Little Red Hen” for parents, faculty and administrators.

Under the direction of Lesley Wade from the Residency in Drama program, Loretta Vernet’s, Cara Hardecker’s and Sharon Elefante’s students captivated the audience with their rendition of “The Mitten” by Jan Brett, a folk tale about a boy who loses his mitten in the snow. While he searches for it, different woodland creatures – including a mouse, a squirrel, a rabbit, a fox and a bear – crawl into the mitten until it rips and can no longer be worn.

Denise Kvint and Traci D’Alessandro’s, Erika Muccio’s and Sharon Elefante’s classes brought another folk tale to life on stage with “The Little Red Hen,” originally written by Paul Galdone. The story follows the Little Red Hen asking the cows, pigs and ducks on the farm to help plant wheat, but receives no takers; they won’t even assist the Little Red Hen in watering, harvesting or grinding the crop to bake a loaf of bread. After the Little Red Hen bakes the delicious treat, all of the animals want a piece but cannot have any because they refused to help.

The young students enjoyed memorizing their scripts, learning the choreography and dressing up in hats, scarves, gloves,

face paint and handmade animal ears for the productions.

Concluding the performances, all three classes assembled to sing and dance to Randy Newman’s “You’ve Got a Friend in Me.” The district extends it gratitude to Ms. Wade for providing the children with a hands-on lesson in teamwork, commitment and confidence. Special thanks also go to the Birch School faculty, staff and administrators for their dedication and support of the kindergarten program, as well as members of the Birch School PTA for instituting this program and providing the costumes.

Staying Power I recently had the opportunity to attend a journalism forum at The Paley Center for Media in Manhattan.

Titled “The Future of Local News: Trust, Truth & The Bottom Line,” this summit brought together some of the best and the brightest in the industry to discuss what many have summarily dismissed as a dying field.

I am happy to report that, after listening to several engaging panels touching on everything from politics to nonprofit upstarts to the pros and cons of social media in the information age, I came away with an even deeper sense of confidence that journalism is, in fact, here to stay. Sure, the fourth estate may have hit some bumps in the road of late; but, in essence, these

obstacles have only helped those truly reputable media outlets to gain a stronger foothold.

Too much of anything is a bad thing; this is a commonly held opinion. But, to be able to harness this influx of information and utilize it in such a way that is beneficial, well, that is a opportunity that should not be squandered. It may take time and research to discern what is truly valuable and accurate information, but why shouldn’t we devote that kind of effort to educating ourselves? It hardly seems a steep price to pay, in my estimation.

The hope is that, as the sources of “news” multiply and morph, future generations will increasingly become experts at determining what

is reliable. Not to throw the phrase back in my day around too lightly but… back when I was in college, media was pretty much defined as print or broadcast; newspapers, magazines, television, radio.

Social media was only just beginning to take off, and its potential as a legitimate source of news – breaking or otherwise – was as yet unanticipated.

Fast forward to the present day, when your average elementary school student is “plugged in” to his/her own cell phone throughout the day.

My, how times have changed.

Regardless of whether we support this development, the fact is - it’s happening. Best to jump on board and learn to harness the power of the media. It’s here to stay.

Ideals for America Levittown student Alicia Rendi, a junior at Division Avenue High School, placed first at the local level and received a $400 scholarship prize during the Voice of Democracy competition, hosted by VFW Post 9592 of Levittown.

During the competition, Alicia

submitted an orated essay regarding her position of this year’s theme, “Responsibility to America.”

Since 1947, the Voice of Democracy has been the Veterans of Foreign Wars premier scholarship program. Each year, 40,000 high school students

compete for more than $2 million in scholarships and incentives by submitting, writing and recording an audio essay on an annual patriotic theme.

The Levittown School District congratulates Alicia on this outstanding academic accomplishment.

Force of Fashion Members of the East Meadow High School Fashion Club held a “Force of Nature” fashion show on March 31st, raising $1,500 for “The Cure Starts Now,” a pediatric cancer research foundation for diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas, a type of brain tumor.

Throughout the year, Fashion Club members developed a theme for the show, decided on a charity to which they would donate the proceeds, coordinated

with local stores to donate clothing, and arranged fittings for the models as well as taught them the choreography for the runway.

After months of planning and preparation, students in grades 10-12 volunteered to model fashion inspired by the four elements – wind, fire, water and earth.

Each model posed in two outfits graciously donated

by Century 21 in Westbury.

“The amount of

support we received from friends, family, teachers and other students was truly amazing,” said East Meadow High School senior and Fashion Club member Olivia Megale. “I am beyond proud of all the club members and models for putting on a fabulous show.”

The district commends the Fashion Club for using their passion for fashion to help the community.

“To be acknowledged as a Golden 11 scholar-athlete and to forever be in the NFF Football Hall of Fame is an incredible honor,” said coach Anthony Cracco.

Valentino plans on studying business while playing football at Seton Hill University in Pennsylvania. He has been named All-County and AllState in football and is a member of the school’s Athletes Helping Athletes club.

Mock Trial Achievement The W.T. Clarke High School Mock Trial club in the East Meadow School District won first place in the New York State Bar Association’s Nassau County tournament, advancing to the 2017 NYS Mock Trial Finals in Albany, New York, on May 21st-23rd.

The competitions are part of the New York State Mock Trial program, which, according to NYSBA’s website, gives high school students an opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge of civil/criminal law and courtroom procedures by defending a case.

In preparation for the county tournament, the East Meadow students received the mock case of Robin Berkman v. County of Dover in December,

which they read, analyzed and strategized with their coach, high school social studies teacher Paul Henning. During the competition, held at the Nassau County Courthouse in Hempstead, teams took on the role of either prosecutor or defendant against other local schools and argued their case before a panel of judges.

The judges consisted of lawyers, judges and law enforcement officials.

Clarke High School’s team competed against several high schools in the preliminary rounds, including Kellenberg Memorial, Saint Mary’s, Massapequa, Great Neck North and Davis Renov Stahler Yeshiva high schools, as well as Hempstead’s Crescent

School. They emerged victorious after facing the Wheatley School from the East Williston School District in the championship round, earning first place and advancing to the finals.

The team will head to Albany on May 21 to defend the same case at the James T. Foley Courthouse in the Northern District against schools from around the state.

From 2003 to 2011, the W.T. Clarke High School Mock Trial team has won six county championship titles and were named state champions in 2003.

The district commends the W.T. Clarke High School team and wishes them much success at finals.

Fifteen students at W.T. Clarke Middle School in the East Meadow School District were honored for their exemplary character and conduct during the school’s inaugural Breakfast of Champions ceremony on April 27th.

“Thank you for raising such fine children,” said Principal Stacy Breslin to the parents gathered.

“We honor these students for being Clarke Middle School Champions and applaud them for their contributions and

achievements.”

The program recognizes students who possess strong character and integrity, a good work ethic, compassion and empathy. The honorees were nominated by their teachers for exemplifying a positive attitude, demonstrating an open mindset and taking personal responsibility for their actions.

The school’s administrators expressed their gratitude to the nominating teachers, as

well as staff members Randi Bernstein, Carol Glueckert and Laura Henry, PTA President Denise Michaelis, student representatives Isabel Martinez and Anjali Aggarwal, and the Planning Management Team for their organization, support and creativity in instituting this program.

Math Fair Adds Up Sanford H. Calhoun High School junior Zach Neiger’s aptitude for math dates back to a third-grade club, Math Olympiads, where he said he realized he had a knack for numbers.

“Since then I’ve always just wanted to learn more about math,” he said.

The three-year Advanced Science Research student even dedicated his project to the subject, “A Further Exploration of the Properties of Orthodiagonal Quadrilaterals.”

This research earned him a gold medal at the Al Kalfus Long Island Math Fair on April 28th. He was

the only student from the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District to compete. Only the top 5 percent of competitors receive one of three level medals: bronze, silver or gold.

Since being named a Long Island Math Scholar in 2016, Neiger has been studying at the inviteonly Institute of Creative Problem Solving for Gifted and Talented Students, based at SUNY Old Westbury on Saturdays.

An accomplished cellist, Neiger has also competed at Science Olympiads, the Physics Bowl and Nassau County Math Competition,

“He is one of the most brilliant math minds to come through Calhoun, said Christine Boyce, Director of Calhoun’s Advanced Science Research Program. “Zach is a true Renaissance Man, he is tops academically, a major performer in the drama program, and cellist for the orchestra with a personality and sense of humor that are second to none. Arlia earned a perfect score making him the only first-place winner out of 1, 591 test takers from 16 states, Puerto Rico and other countries.

“I had to study culture and memorize certain things about Italian history, literature, music and more,” explained Arlia.

“While it was challenging to grasp certain aspects, I most enjoyed learning

about their modern culture as I’ve traveled there twice.”

In recognition of his impressive work, he will receive a $500 prize and a scholarship that will cover tuition and accommodations for a twoweek language course in Italy.

In addition, the American Association of Teachers of Italian will contribute a $500 award toward flight expenses.

A Visit with the Assemblyman Bellmore students received an inside look at how the state’s government works during a visit with New York State Assemblyman David McDonough.

The Shore Road sixthgraders are learning about state government, and McDonough’s talk emphasized how a bill becomes a law, as well as how the government

houses work together to govern. McDonough also gave insight into why he became involved in public service.

Good Deed Award Recognized for their upstanding citizenship and community service, East Meadow High School juniors Kristen Kavanagh and Shermeen Khan have earned the 2017 Good Deed Award for Long Island Teenagers from the National Committee for the Furtherance of Jewish Education.

According to the NCFJE website, the Good Deed Award Program recognizes outstanding caring and courageous students whose independent good deeds contribute to the community’s quality of life. These students embody the characteristics of compassion, equality and social justice, integrity, honesty and responsibility.

Both students were nominated by their guidance counselor, Joanna Silberman, for sharing their time, talents and resources with the community.

With a genuine, caring and humble personality, Kristen expresses her school spirit in numerous ways. She volunteers to decorate the halls for various activities, has helped build a homecoming float, performs at sporting events, pep rallies and parades as a member of the high school’s kickline team, the Rockettes, and serves as co-president of the Student Alliance for Equality. She is also a member of several honor societies.

Last year, following a rigorous interview process, Kristen was the only East Meadow High School sophomore to represent the school as a Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership ambassador. She joined teenagers from throughout the region at a HOBY leadership conference, where she collaborated with recognized leaders in business, government, education and other professions to discuss current world issues.

Beyond her school involvement, Kristen has been a

Girl Scout for more than 12 years and earned her Gold Award with her community service project, SMILE – Smile, Manners, Interpersonal skills, Listen, Eye contact – to emphasize the importance of social interaction among middle school students. For her project, she designed interactive workshops that used games, role playing and technology to instill “old school values” and help children adopt better decision-making and social skills.

With a passion for service since middle school, Shermeen is active in numerous clubs and organizations,

and is an activist for the Muslim and Hindu communities.

Enrolled in challenging Advanced Placement and college-level courses, Shermeen is a member of the National, Science, Spanish and Social Studies honor societies, for which she assists in fundraising, tutors younger children and upholds the honor and duties of each chapter. She is also president of Key Club, public

Reuse a Shoe Students and staff at Barnum Woods Elementary School in the East Meadow School District donated 2,351 pairs of shoes to the clothing recycling company Wearable Collections on April 28th.

According to its website, this New York-City based company keeps clothing, textiles and shoes out of landfills while generating

funds for local charities.

Initiated by the school’s Planning Management Team, students, faculty and administrators were asked to bring in footwear of any condition during the week of April 24th. Classes collected large donations of unwanted, outgrown and worn out sneakers, shoes and boots.

Among the generous

contributions, Gene Vassel’s fifth-grade class collected 177 pairs of the shoes, winning a brunch celebration with Harriet Alfano, the school’s assistant principal. In addition, fourth-grader Natalie Kwok individually collected 97 pairs of shoes, helping her classmates earn second place with a total of 149 pairs.

Additionally, she was elected New York District Lieutenant Governor for District 6, where she leads and motivates students from 12 local high school Key Clubs. She creates newsletters, develops training workshops, and motivates and inspires others to give back to their community in a variety of ways.

Within her community, Shermeen conducted extensive research and created a petition that received over 700 signatures requesting the East Meadow School District to consider recognizing Muslim and Hindu holidays in the school calendar. Her proposal was accepted, and the district will be recognizing these religious holidays in the upcoming school year calendar.

The district commends both Kristen and Shermeen for making the East Meadow school community exceptional through their positive contributions and dedicated involvement.

Exceeding the Goal

During the May 4th Wantagh Board of Education meeting, Wantagh Elementary School Student Council members were recognized for their participation and

collection of more than $5,000 during the Pennies for Patients campaign.

Under the direction of advisers Mary Ko and Angela Savella, the students exceeded their

$3,000 collection goal for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and learned the importance of philanthropy.

Medaling at State

Students at the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center in Bellmore celebrated Mexican culture during the festive holiday of Cinco de Mayo. Foreign language teacher Lisa Goldberg organized the annual event and explained that the school’s Cinco

de Mayo celebration was an opportune occasion to strengthen the students’ knowledge of the Spanish language.

During the day, students constructed and painted serapas, a Latin American shawl, out of paper bags.

Rotating through four

stations, the students honed their Spanish language skills through song and Latin dance, while playing Bingo, creating Mexican flags and reading about a Mexican boy’s day in school. The celebration commenced with a snack of chips and salsa.

International Qualifier Distributive Education Club of America, or DECA as it is commonly known, brings the real working world into the classroom.

The Sanford H. Calhoun High School DECA students recently competed in a state competition that is organized by New York’s DECA chapter.

During the event, high school students throughout New York State tested their ability to think on their feet, to devise

marketing plans, pitch promotional strategies, and to publicly speak or interview before a board of qualified corporate judges.

REACH Students Perform On April 28, W.T. Clarke REACH students in the East Meadow School District shared the stage with the FREE Players as parents, faculty, administrators and community members gathered for the FREE Players Variety Show Extravaganza at W.T. Clarke High School.

“This is a first that our own children are performing with the FREE Players,” said Superintendent of Schools Leon J. Campo. “The FREE Players are an inspirational troupe who have spent time with our students

in overcoming their challenges, developing their abilities and exposing their talents for all of us to enjoy.”

Alongside their FREE Players mentors, the East Meadow REACH students took center stage as they performed the “Schoolhouse Rock” segment “I’m Just a Bill,” singing about how a bill becomes a law in the United States judicial system.

The FREE Players performed an assortment of skits, songs and dance routines from Broadway musicals including

“Hairspray,” “9 to 5” and “Wicked.” Members of the FREE Players Drum Corps and Color Guard dazzled the audience with cadences from “Free Your Mind,” “Ice Kingdom” and “Intergalactic.” In addition, performers from the Bayway Arts Center danced to “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”

by Lorde and presented a preview of their production of “Grease.”

All who took the stage received a standing ovation for their remarkable performance.

Autism Awareness MacArthur High School’s Autism Awareness Committee, under the direction of Vin Causeman, presented the Nassau/ Suffolk Chapter of the Autism Society of America with a check totaling $11,285 to fund and

support the organization’s family programming. The bulk of the donations was raised through the sale of autism awareness T-shirts for the school’s Day of Awareness.

NSASA President Suzanne Reek was on

hand to accept the check, which will be earmarked for Long Island events that afford families the chance to participate in activities that would otherwise be difficult without the support of the Autism Society of America.

American Indian Culture Shore Road fifth-graders in Bellmore attended an in-house filed trip called Journeys Into American Indian Territory to learn about the culture of the Eastern Woodland Native Americans. During the curriculum-based event, presenters Maddi Cheers and Richie Cornacchio

shared artifacts from their portable museum, told Native American tales and taught students to play Hoop and Stick and the Ball Game, popular with the Native American children.

Students learned how the Eastern Woodland Native Americans used

the whole buffalo for clothes, food and shelter, and select students demonstrated how to tan clothing out of hides. The most popular part of the program, however, was the installation of a traditional teepee in the gymnasium for the students to explore.

Fifth-graders at Martin Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District experienced that during a writing celebration on May 5th.

As part of a Writer’s Workshop unit on biographies, each student selected a person to

research and write about.

They chose a variety of individuals including historical figures, authors, artists, scientists, musicians and athletes.

Teachers Ashley Evans and Debra Falabella guided students through the sixweek process that saw their stories go from rough outlines to published pieces.

Each story had to include standard biographical information about the person, as well as other

components of a book such as a cover, table of contents and works cited list.

Students also wrote their stories by hand as a way to practice their cursive handwriting.

The published works were displayed in the Martin Avenue Café for the writing celebration.

Students also dressed up as their subjects and created slideshow presentations using iPads.

Trio Places at Top Grand Avenue Middle School students Timothy Langone, Salianne Chiu and Sidney Wang placed among the top in the Long Island Science Congress and the Broadcom MASTERS Long Island Science and Engineering Fair.

Langone, a seventhgrader will be moving on to the New York State

Science Congress for his project, “Will Soybean Plants Grown in Martian Regolith Germinate and Reach Maturity More Successfully Than if Grown Hydroponically?”

Chiu and Wang are eighth-graders who were nominated for the national competition for LISEF based on the results of their project, “How Does

Aloe Vera and Caffeine Affect the Regeneration Rate of Dugesia tigrina?”

They are all are members of the Students Network of Cooperative Science. In this after-school program, the students spend countless hours under the close supervision of science teacher Tami Cruz.

Clinching the Conference The Wellington C. Mepham High School girls’ lacrosse team won the Nassau Conference IV Championship on May 8th as they defeated Friendsth Academy, 11-10.

Senior Maeve Testa had a game high five goals, including the game winner with 34 seconds left. Jamie Maddaluno and Maeve Testa combined to win 14/23 draw controls.

Senior goalkeeper Hope Kotowski had eight saves in the win.

“I have a talented and experienced group of upperclassmen that are amazing role models both on and off the field for a team laden with underclassmen,” said coach Melissa Rohr. “Back in February when we had our pre-season meeting, one of the things myself along with my assistant coach Briana Rubenstein spoke about at length with the girls was winning a conference championship this year. We tried to plant

the seed early, and the girls honestly took it from there.

The team truly bought into our message and what we wanted to accomplish as a group from day one and we are so unbelievably proud of them.”

This is the squad’s first conference championship in four years. The team sits with a perfect 9-0 record in conference play, and awaits their playoff seed in the Nassau County Class B playoffs.

Duo Places at State

Linda Jiang and Hugh Cheung of John F. Kennedy High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central School District placed fourth in the New York State Future Business Leaders of America competitions.

Their category, Banking and Financial Systems, required them to complete a 100-question test and later provide and present an impromptu solution to a case study to a panel of judges.

“This is an amazing accomplishment as, not only are they both freshmen and firsttime competitors, they competed against high school students of all ages,” said Roseann Damato, the Future Business Leaders of America adviser.

This feat earned them a place at the national event in Anaheim, California.

Additionally, Hugh placed fifth in the Introduction to Financial Math category.

FBLA is the largest career

student organization in the world. FBLA’s state and national awards program recognizes and rewards excellence in a broad range of business and careerrelated areas. Through state-based competition at the spring State Leadership Conferences, members compete in events that test their business knowledge and skills. Top winners in each state are eligible to compete for honors at the National Leadership Conference each summer.

Mock Trial Tournament

The seventh- and eighthgrade members of W.T. Clarke Middle School’s Mock Trial club in the East Meadow School District took on the roles of lawyers, witnesses and jurors as they recently participated in the 34th annual Western Suffolk BOCES Mock Trial Tournament.

After months of preparation and practice, the team read, analyzed and strategized the mock civil case of Jenna Hightower v. Mike Tosser, which was

the case to be heard at the tournament. They met with club adviser and Social Studies Department Chairperson Lisa Scully to study and plan for the big day.

Held at Suffolk County Community College, the one-day competition brought together 13 teams from Nassau and Suffolk counties. Clarke’s team participated in two rounds: the first as prosecutor against West Babylon Junior High School and

the second as defendant against North Shore Middle School.

At the end of the day, Clarke’s students were victorious in the presentation/poised category.

“I am very proud of the team for diligently studying the case,” said Scully.

“They exhibited a high level of professionalism by transforming into the lawyers and witnesses of the trial.”

Congressman Pete King joined the Wantagh Little League in honoring the memory of NYPD Officer Scott Gadell, a Wantagh native, who was murdered in the line of duty 31 years ago.

The Congressman joined

with Town of Hempstead Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney and Scott’s brother Jeff and his family at this commemoration ceremony.

The Congressman commended the Wantagh Little League for honoring

Scott Gadell’s memory, adding, “It is important for people to realize and remember the brave men and women in blue who put their lives on the line each day so that the rest of us can be safe.”

Outstanding Achievement does independently, and is eager to participate in and add to discussions.

Ricky is a keeper of the classroom, ensuring that the rules are being followed and that the classroom is clean and safe. He never hesitates to help out, whether holding books during circle time, carrying supplies for his teachers, or setting up lunch for his classmates.

“Ricky has to overcome a lot on a daily basis just to make it through his day successfully,” wrote his award nominator, CRC Teacher Lauren Spuches.

“Despite these challenges, he is an incredibly sweet and compassionate young man with a big heart and a great sense of humor.

He always makes sure that everyone is doing well and is taken care of. He is a true asset to his classroom and an important part of our school community.”

“I am extremely proud of Ricky,” said CRC Principal Amy Goldstein. “This little boy, who started with us when he was five years old, had great difficulty communicating.

Since then he has come a long way. He has grown

academically and socially.

He has developed a wonderful sense of humor and is extremely sensitive to the needs of other students.”

For the past ten years, outstanding students have been earning this award in memory of former Nassau BOCES Board President George Farber, whose passion for improving the lives of students was surpassed only by his love and care for them. Farber was the longest-serving board member in Nassau County, having served from 1971 to 2009.

“These students exemplify the very best of Nassau BOCES,” District Superintendent Dr. Robert Dillon said at the awards ceremony. “Each of them embodies the true spirit of George Farber. They have shown kindness to other students, exhibited an excellent work ethic and demonstrated outstanding commitment.

They have eagerly shared their knowledge and made contributions to their communities. Their collective stories are an inspiration to us all.”

Jeremy Kaplan of the Bellmore-Merrick CHSD, who attends Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), earned the George Farber Outstanding Student Award for 2017.

He has demonstrated a variety of remarkable traits including talent, commitment, honesty, diligence, compassion and high moral standards.

Jeremy was honored during the tenth annual awards celebration on the LIHSA campus in Syosset.

A naturally gifted musician, Jeremy began performing at age 12 in the orchestra pits of community theaters and has been meticulously honing his talents ever since. While his first and deepest love is the piano, he is skilled in a variety of other instruments including bass, drums, flute, guitar and trombone.

His level of music literacy is extremely advanced and he composes his own, original pieces.

Since coming to LIHSA, Jeremy has excelled at an exponential rate. He has developed his talents to a place of mastery, and has performed professionally as both a musician and music director. Jeremy’s academics are at the college level and he has taken a number of advanced placement courses.

At LIHSA, Jeremy has served as President of the Tri-M Music Honor Society, Musical Director for the 2016 production of Prospect High: Brooklyn, Pianist for the Jazz Ensemble, and Accompanist for countless

performances. He has performed at the Nassau BOCES Education Partner Awards Gala, the California Pizza Kitchen fundraiser for LIHSA, and the Grand Opening Ceremony for Grace Music School at the famed Steinway Piano Gallery.

“Jeremy is a musician of very high standards who inspires others to perform at the highest levels,” wrote his award nominator, LIHSA Teacher Jerry Nobile. “He is a patient, trustworthy, respectful and responsible student and musician. We can always count on him to come to class with a cheerful attitude, fully prepared to participate. Jeremy has proven himself to be a leader, an asset, and an outstanding representative of our school and of Nassau BOCES.” “It has been a long, beautiful road from when Jeremy began at LIHSA to where he is now,” said Principal Jack Lenson.

“Everyone at LIHSA is proud of him. He has become a leader in the music department and his classmates regularly look to him for advice. Jeremy’s musical ability continues to astound me every time I hear him perform. He has all the ingredients for success and I am confident that he will achieve whatever goals he sets for himself.”

“Whether I’m playing for an audience or playing for myself, it’s really satisfying and fulfilling,” Jeremy said of his music. “I can express myself through music in a way of that I can’t with words or any

Remembering the Holocaust

In observance of Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day, East Meadow High School students learned about hope, tolerance and courage from the Theatre Three production “From the Fires: Voices of the Holocaust.”

Organized by Assistant Principal Robert Hardwick, the high school’s Expanding Pride in Israeli Culture club and Social Studies department, students in grades 9-12 traveled back in time to better understand the heinous tragedy of the Holocaust.

“This program is a

powerful voice that reminds us to never forget and to always treat others with respect, understanding and compassion,” said EPIC President Allison Goldstein.

The assembly, which was divided into two sessions – the earlier for the upperclassmen and the later for freshmen and sophomores – depicted the horrific treatment that a young high school Jewish girl, her friend and her father experienced from neighbors, colleagues and classmates in their town, as well as how they survived the concentration camps.

Written by Jeffrey R. Sanzel, “From the Fires: Voices of the Holocaust” traces the life of Rachel Gold, a Berlin teenager, and her experiences from 1937 to 1945. The 40-minute play follows Rachel’s life from the inception of the Nuremberg Laws to the deportation to Auschwitz and the death march to Mauthausen.

Following the performance, students took part in a Q&A session with the actors, asking about their inspiration for the play and the impact the performance had on them.

Birch Awards Dressed to the nines, kindergartners at Birch School in the Merrick School acknowledged stellar literary works with the Kvintessandro Awards Ceremony on May 5th.

In preparation for the special evening, the students in Denise Kvint and Traci D’Alessandro’s class spent the month of April learning how to write opinion pieces and understanding that opinions can differ and should be supported with substantial reasoning.

Following this lesson, the students read award-winning books and examined them

to determine what had earned them their distinction. Blending their teachers’ names, the class’ Kvintessandro Awards were created to recognize the best books, illustrations, authors and characters from literary works the students had read during the year. The children selected two nominees for each of seven categories before casting their votes for the winners. “Best of” categories included those for rhyming, nonfiction, star, picture books, Mo Willems books, author and character. On the day of the ceremony, students, parents, members of

central administration and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Dominick Palma gathered in the school’s all-purpose room for the awards presentation, with winners including “Rhyming Dust Bunnies” by Jan Thomas, “Bull Shark” by Deborah Nuzzolo and “The Thank You Book” by Mo Willems.

Concluding the ceremony, Kvint and D’Alessandro presented each student with a miniature trophy for being an exceptional reader and writer.

“We are very proud of our super readers and writers for all their hard work this year,” said Kvint.

Members and supporters of School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) are teeing up for the Seventh Annual SBPLI Golf Outing, presented by SCOPE Education Services. This year’s event, which benefits the FIRST® Long Island robotics programs, is being held at Nissequogue Golf Club in St. James on Monday, June 26th.

Dr. Lorraine Greenwald, Dean of International Education and Programs at Farmingdale State College and Longtime SBPLI Volunteer, will be honored at the event.

Dr. Greenwald’s dedication to SBPLI began in 2004, when she was invited to serve as a judge for the SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST® Robotics

Competition, which takes place each April at Hofstra University. After finding herself immediately awed by the incredible energy and enthusiasm of the students, mentors and volunteers, Dr. Greenwald was hooked and opted to even volunteer to judge at the FIRST Robotics Competition Championships. In 2007, she signed on as Judge Advisor for the SBPLI Long Island Regional in 2003 and has assumed that role ever since. Dr. Greenwald is also instrumental in coordinating the annual Fred Breithut Scholarship, which is presented to an incoming Farmingdale College student each year.

In her dual roles as Dean of International Education and Programs and Senior

International Officer at Farmingdale College, Dr. Greenwald is tasked with the internationalization of the campus and with creating a globally competent student body that understands the interconnectedness of technology, applied science, business, culture and society on an international scale. Over the past few years, Dr. Greenwald has been forging longterm partnerships with educational institutions, governmental agencies and non-governmental organizations in South America, Asia, Europe and the Caribbean in an effort to support, negotiate and manage a variety of international programs.

In recognition of her work, Dr. Greenwald was

presented with the William H. Fulbright International Administrators Award in 2015, which afforded her the opportunity to travel to France to develop bilateral programs of educational exchange between France and the United States.

Throughout her nearly 20year tenure at Farmingdale College, Dr. Greenwald has served as Dean of the School of Business, as Chair of the Computer Systems Department and as Professor of Computer Programming and Information Systems. In addition to her role in SBPLI’s FIRST Robotics Competition Development Council, Dr. Greenwald is also a member of AIEA-Association of International Education Administrators.

Dr. Greenwald will join her fellow SBPLI supporters at the event, which begins with registration and golfers’ breakfast at 10:30 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 12 noon and a BBQ Lunch on the course. The day will conclude with a dinner and reception, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Registration costs $1,200 per foursome or $325 per golfer. Students can choose from any one of three advanced-level learning experiences: In the String Quartet and Ensemble Intensive, students will hone and perfect their skills under the guidance of master musicians, working toward performance in an ensemble classical setting.

Students taking Advanced Jazz Study for Vocal and Jazz Ensemble will explore various jazz formats and expand their repertoire while improving their performance skills.

Feed the Mermaids Coney Island USA, the non-profit multiarts organization whose programming includes some of New York City’s most unique and beloved events, has announced its “Feed the Mermaids” campaign to help fund the upcoming 35th annual Mermaid Parade, taking place on June 17th. This year’s festivities will be

presided over by Queen Mermaid Deborah Harry and King Neptune Chris Stein of Blondie.

A completely original creation of Coney Island USA, the Mermaid Parade is the nation’s largest art parade and the official kickoff to summer in New York City. A celebration of the ancient mythology of the summer solstice mixed

with seaside honky-tonk rituals, the Mermaid Parade showcases thousands of diverse and creative marchers cheered on by hundreds of thousands of eager fans. People come from all over the five boroughs and beyond, opening the summer season with incredible art, entrepreneurial spirit, and community pride.

“What makes the Mermaid Parade so special is the fact that it was invented by artists, but is meant for everyone. It has no ethnic, religious, or commercial aims. It highlights pageantry and the vision of the masses,” said Dick D. Zigun, Artistic Director and Mermaid Parade creator.
