The Charity of The Month for May is: Guardians of Rescue animals, building doghouses, taking in new rescues and trying to cover all their expenses.

“We have been providing our rescue services for over 10 years, but now we are struggling to keep our organization going,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue. “We are in jeopardy because of the perfect storm that this pandemic has created for organizations such as ours. Many people are living paycheck to paycheck so pets are in trouble.”

“The pandemic has created a host of problem for the animals,” says Misseri.

“I hope that we can make it through this difficult time, so that we can continue to help the animals in need.”

Woodloch Pines Launches A Series Of Initiatives To Provide Support During Its Temporarily Closure The Covid-19 crisis has hit the hospitality industry particularly hard, and Woodloch Pines, an all-inclusive family resort located in Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains, is no exception. The property closed its doors back in mid-March with hopes to reopen on May 22, but with much still unknown, Woodloch refused to simply stand by and wait.

Having been in business for 62 years, the Poconos resort has emerged triumphant from its fair share of challenges, never shying away from difficult times and always working to turn negatives into positives.

Family-owned and operated since 1958, Woodloch’s core mission is built upon treating guests and staff like “company in our homes.” Although the property remains shuttered, it has been working hard to maintain the Woodloch spirit for guests, staff and the entire community in an effort to spread light in a time of darkness. Initiatives include the following: The launch of Woodloch at Home, a treasure trove of activities and games that can be accessed remotely through both the resort’s website and social media channels. Activities include tried and true guest favorites such as scavenger hunts, “Olympics,” game show and athletic contests, deejay-led dance parties and even a “Concert on the

Couch” series, featuring a diverse array of talent acts performed by both guests and employees. All programming takes place digitally so that individual families can remain in the privacy of their own homes while staying connected with Woodloch’s energetic staffers as well as each other.

On March 21, The Woodloch Family gave each of its 950 hourly team members an additional week’s worth of wages to compensate them during the first week of shutdown from March 16 – 22.

The Woodloch Family hosted two separate food drives, one on March 26 and the other on April 10, where they distributed over 800 care packages to staff members. These included an assortment of items such as pasta, meat, milk, eggs, juice, canned goods, toilet paper, baked goods from the resort’s in-house bakery as well as salad greens and herb bundles from the organic farm at Woodloch’s destination spa. An additional 300 packages were donated to local Pike and Wayne County food shelters.

Woodloch donated all of its available N95 respirator masks to the local community hospital, Wayne Memorial.

Additionally, Woodloch’s bakery distributed care packages to hospital staff, local urgent care, and local EMS on Friday, April 17.

Woodloch owns and

operates a stand-alone restaurant, The Boat House, in downtown Hawley, PA, and they have been providing a free weekly meal to Pennsylvania State Police from the nearby Blooming Grove station.

As part of its new program, “Goodwill Fridays,” the family resort will host charitable acts in the community every Friday during the crisis and beyond. On May 1st, Woodloch supplied four of their local volunteer fire departments with of an assortment of homemade baked goods.

“Our tagline, ‘Together is the best place to be,’ has never rang more true. We are a family here at Woodloch, and that sentiment extends not only to our staff but also to our community. When bad things happen, we want to do everything we can to offer a helping hand,” said Brad Kiesendahl, C.E.O. of Woodloch Pines.

“We extend our immense thanks to all of the frontline workers out there who are working tirelessly to combat this crisis. We wish everyone health and safety and look forward to much brighter days ahead.”

Guardians of Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Their mission is to facilitate and foster programs and activities that further the unique benefits of interaction between people and animals. They are truly an animal rights and welfare organization whose members work to protect the wellbeing of all animals and their owners, and come to the aid of those in distress. The Guardians are keenly aware that there is no shortage of animal neglect and their goal is to help in as many ways as possible to make sure animals are always taken care of.

We are all aware of the toll that this pandemic is having on people, yet the impacts are being felt beyond humans.

Animals are also being impacted in numerous ways by this situation.

Guardians of Rescue has been dealing with the Covid Crisis in many different ways, such as helping people feed their pets and taking on the responsibility to care for homeless animals. They have even stepped out of their realm of helping animals to assist seniors during these trying times.

Recently they received a phone call from the Public Safety at Eisenhower Park, who mentioned that a cat had been stuck in a tree for at least five days and no one was able to get it down. Soon after, the Guardians arrived and climbed over 75 feet to successfully bring the cat down to safety. They not only rescued the cat, but they are now continuing to take care of her the best they can.

Guardians of Rescue is overwhelmed by the amount of assistance needed and their phones are ringing non-stop. So many people have had their employment impacted by the virus, therefore donations have been down. This makes it difficult for them to continue feeding the

Tops In World Languages Although the official ceremony was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Wantagh High School celebrated the accomplishment of 63 foreign language students who were inducted into the World Language Honor Society this spring. Honor society officers Katherine Mazzer (president), Timothy Migliaro (vice president), Matt Devine (secretary), Travis Minutoli (treasurer), Alyssa Lombardo (Italian trustee) and Celine Lopez (Spanish trustee) organized the event, which honors the accomplishments of juniors enrolled in preAdvanced Placement and level 4H World Language classes who have acquired a 90 GPA or higher in grades 8-10 and in the first two quarters of their junior year combined. The students also submitted essays in the language studied and met the high school’s criteria for conduct.

Adviser Franco A. Zagari said this year’s program would have included keynote speakers and seniors Abigail Colaco and Athena Yao, who planned on speaking about their experiences in World Language and recent studies abroad.

Also planned were two musical interludes, including musicians and singers James Degnan, Katriana Koppe, Keira Orgass and Robert Spiteri.

Additionally, scheduled for the end of the program was a surprise tribute to retiring World Languages/ ENL/Business Chairperson Patricia Calosso.

“We congratulate her on an incredible career and for bringing and keeping World Languages at the forefront of Wantagh’s academics,” Mr. Zagari said.

As part of tradition, the World Languages Department recognizes seniors who excelled in the study of Spanish

and Italian throughout their high school careers.

Travis Minutoli received the Senior Award for Excellence in Italian, and Olivia Vinson won the Senior Award for

Excellence in Spanish. Also recognized were seniors who completed work for the New York State Seal for Biliteracy. To earn

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, that a Public Hearing will be held remotely by the Board of Trustees of the North Merrick Public Library (the “Library”), Town of Hempstead, Nassau County, New York on, May 26, 2020, at 7:15 PM, for the purpose of discussing expenditures contained in the Library’s proposed budget for the 2020-2021 fiscal year.

Bellmore Students Celebrate Their Inner Superheroes

In addition to celebrating the heroes on the front lines of today’s pandemic, Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center students celebrated the Bellmore School District’s leadership principles and core values as they pertain

to leadership during the school’s annual Superhero Leader Day on April 28.

In a virtual message to students, Principal Patricia Castine reminded them to think about the leadership principles and core values they demonstrate each day

that give them superhero powers. “Superheroes are fictional characters who remind us, that in order to be a leader, we must have integrity, dedication and thinking power,” Ms. Castine said. “It is important that we work

hard to let our own special superpowers come out.”

During their home instruction, students were asked to write about their choice of super hero, including what their name and superpower would be. Other students wrote

about real-life superheroes and the traits that these individuals demonstrate each day. The students also submitted a photo of themselves dressed as a favorite superhero.

Ms. Castine added that this fun-filled day exhibits

how students have learned to internalize the district’s leadership principles and core values, as well as recognize the leadership powers each one of them possess.

In a small bowl, use a rubber spatula to blend the remaining 8 tablespoons of butter with the cooled mushroom mixture until combined.

Place the butter in the center of a piece of parchment paper. Bring the edges together and press with your fingers to form the butter into a log.

Roll and twist the ends before popping the butter into the refrigerator for at least 20 to 30 minutes.

Set the steaks on the counter for 30 minutes to

bring them up to room temperature. Meanwhile, preheat a grill or grill pan to medium-high or about 400 F. Season both sides of the steaks with 2 pinches of salt and a pinch of pepper.

Grill each steak for 6 to 8 minutes per side, depending on the thickness and the desired doneness. Tent with aluminum foil and let rest for 5 minutes.

Slice the mushroom butter into coins and top each of the steaks with two coins before serving.

Combine the bacon and onion in a medium Dutch oven. Slowly cook over medium heat until the onion is tender and the bacon is cooked, 8 to 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, whisk together the ketchup, molasses, sugar, ground mustard, ground cloves, and 1 cup water to combine. Add the cooked beans and pour the mixture into the pot with the bacon and onion. Stir, cover and bake for 1 hour, stirring every 20 minutes.

Add the salt and stir.

Uncover and let sit for 15 to 20 minutes before serving.
