Bonding With WWII Vets Is Life-Changing
For 20 Wantagh High School students, accompanying their country’s greatest heroes to the National World War II Museum was the honor of a lifetime. Juniors and seniors were paired with World War II veterans for a trip to New Orleans from April 19-21, and it was an experience they will never forget.
The Soaring Valor program is sponsored by the Gary Sinise Foundation to bring World War II veterans to the museum that was built in their honor. The opportunity became available to Wantagh High School in March and despite the tight time frame, it came together very quickly.
Principal Dr. Paul Guzzone said within 48 hours of the announcement, 53 students submitted essays expressing their desire to attend.
“We knew it was a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity,” Dr. Guzzone said. “At its core, the program is to honor the service of these heroes, who put everything on the line at the age that our students are now.”
Senior Lilly Sloves expressed interest in attending because she wanted the experience of meeting World War II veterans. She was also inspired by her older brother, who visited the museum last year.
Each veteran was paired with one student from Wantagh High School and one from Lake George High School. Lilly’s veteran hails from Manhattan and at nearly 98 years old works as a Big Apple greeter. They sat together on the plane and were able to get to know each other before arriving in New Orleans. She was struck by his stories, especially how he helped free Japanese prisoners in the Philippines after the war ended.
Angelina LaMacchia’s veteran was 96 years old and she said that they have kept in touch since the trip,
texting daily. She recalls his story about being a deepsea diver while stationed off the coast of Texas. With an uncle who was in the Marines in the Vietnam era, Angelina has deep respect for those who served in the United States military. She applied for the Soaring Valor trip because she knew a chance to meet World War II veterans would never come around again.
Ryan Arbeit was paired with the oldest veteran on the trip, a 102-year-old from Maine who was a Navy pilot dive bomber and flew off the USS Ticonderoga. He noted that his veteran was very warm and witty, and told stories with great
detail. When he got home, he shared many of those stories with his family and friends.
“They were just so humble,” Ryan said of the veterans. “They made tremendous sacrifices. They didn’t have to do it, but they did do it. We wouldn’t have the world we live in without them.”
Sean Browne’s veteran was a 98-year-old from North Carolina. He said they quickly developed a strong bond and Sean was able to hear many stories from his veteran, including his time on a transport ship from Boston to Japan. Sean noted that his veteran was particularly thrilled to see a
picture of one of the ships he was on at the museum.
“Even though it was only two days, you really got to form a relationship with your veteran,” Sean said.
After a dinner on April 18 in Hauppauge, students departed early the next morning from Wantagh High School. They arrived at MacArthur Airport for a chartered flight with their veterans and chaperones. Students were amazed by the huge display of patriotism, from bagpipe players to a gathering of veterans from other eras to simple applause from other airport patrons.
“It made you realize how big of a deal it was,” Lilly
in comparison.
“We’re lucky to have this be our struggle, that I’m 18 years old and not having to go off and fight in a war,” Ryan said.
The students said it was gratifying to know how much their presence meant to the World War II heroes. Angelina said the hardest part of the trip was saying goodbye to her veteran on the last day.
“Hearing how much I meant to him was lifechanging,” she said.
The 20 students were accompanied by eight chaperones – Dr. Guzzone, Superintendent John McNamara, Assistant Principal Dr. Christopher Widmann, Director of Humanities Julie Rosslee, social worker Iris McNultyKline and teachers William Jackson, Deanna Pepe and Maria Prisco.
Mr. McNamara thanked the Gary Sinise Foundation for providing this opportunity to Wantagh students, and said it was the best field trip he has ever been on.
said.
In New Orleans, the students visited the sevenbuilding museum with the veterans. There was a performance by the Victory Belles, who sang popular 1940s songs, and a 4D movie experience that documented the war. Students and their veterans toured museum exhibits, which focused on different aspects of the war including the conflicts in Europe and the Pacific and notable moments like D-Day.
Students said that the trip put their own lives into perspective. Recognizing that the veterans were fighting a war at their age, the stresses of school pale
“It was a great privilege to be a part of it,” he said. “Our students got so much out of the trip. To be able to experience the World War II Museum with a World War II veteran was eyeopening for our students. I was so proud of how they interacted and engaged with our veterans.”
Wantagh provided the veterans with several gifts. The school gave each a “mail call” booklet with messages of gratitude from students, staff and residents, as well as a Wantagh hat with an American flag “W.” The Wantagh Foundation for Education Excellence gifted each veteran a mug, and the Booster Club gave them Wantagh shirts.
“Our students were outstanding,” Dr. Guzzone said. “They were compassionate and eager to learn. They really made the veterans feel special.”

Her Songs Broke Every Record, Her Story Broke Every Barrier
She was a girl from Boston with a voice from heaven, who shot through the stars from gospel choir to dance floor diva. With a score featuring more than 20 of Summer’s classic hits including “Love to Love You Baby,” “Bad Girls” and “Hot Stuff,” this electric experience is a moving tribute to the voice of a generation.

It’s time to put those old bicycles and sewing machines to good use. On Saturday, May 13 (rain or shine) from 11 am to 2 pm, Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Long Island will hold its annual used bicycle and sewing machine collection in the parking lot of South Huntington Public Library (145 Pidgeon Hill Road, Huntington Station). The items collected will then be reconditioned by the international non-profit Pedals for Progress (P4P) and sent to Belize.
The mission of P4P is to foster sustainable economic development by recycling bicycles and sewing machines from the US and shipping them to motivated people in the developing world. For many in the US, Belize is seen as an ideal vacation destination but beyond the beaches lies tremendous poverty. Approximately 50% of Belize’s population
Bike And Sewing Machine Collection On May 13
is children and youth below the age of nineteen.
A large percentage of this population is concentrated in the urban ghettos of the south-side of Belize City, specifically in the Port Loyola area. Many of these children live in poverty and are exposed to violence, crime, and civil unrest.
Information about the P4P Belize program can be found at: https://www.p4p. org/category/belize
This is the 19th bike/ sewing machine collection organized by Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Long Island. To date, RPCVLI has collected 1707 bicycles and 282 sewing machines that
have been distributed to Rwanda, Tanzania, Togo, Guatemala, Albania and Kosovo. amongst others.
“Members of Returned Peace Corps volunteers of Long Island see this project as a way of continuing our commitment to support programs in developing countries,” says Kathy Williams-Ging
of Huntington Station, who was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Peru and is co-coordinator of the May 13th collection..
Anyone with an adult or child’s bicycle in repairable condition or a working portable sewing machine is urged to donate the item. Since it costs $40 to collect, process, ship,
rebuild and distribute each bicycle, a donation toward shipping costs is necessary (suggested minimum $20 per item). All cash and material donations are fully deductible and a receipt will be provided on site. The program does not accept “bikes for parts,” disassembled bikes or tricycles.

Levittown Lions Club Kicks Off Membership Drive
As it approaches the 73rd Anniversary of its original charter dated on May 18, 1950, Levittown Lions Club has kicked off a membership drive to encourage individuals interested in volunteering to join.
The motto of Lions International is “We Serve” and there are a variety of focus areas that the organization embraces through its volunteer work: Vision, Youth, Disaster Relief, Humanitarian, Diabetes, Childhood Cancer, Environment and Hunger.
Lions of Levittown volunteers, supporting its focus on Hunger, recently joined the American Legion Post #1711 at its April food drive. The post holds a food drive every third Saturday of the month at which it collects food donations that support local charitable organizations that help in providing food to those in need in the Levittown community.
Levittown Lions volunteers in recent years have vision screened numerous children between the ages of six months to six years through a simple and non-intrusive procedure that detects vision disorders such as amblyopia, myopia and astigmatism. Through early detection and treatment, childhood blindness can be detected, treated and avoided.
Focusing on Environment, Lions volunteered with Levittown Community Council at its Earth Day Cleanup event on April 29, by providing seed packets for planting to beautify the local environment.
For more information on Levittown Lions Club or to apply for membership, contact President Frank Marcinek at Lionsoflevittown@gmail. com.

Wellbridge Welcomes Oakley The Therapy Dog As Newest Team Member
Wellbridge, a Calvertonbased addiction treatment center, doubled the amount of patients it saw over the last year. Their personalized approach to care addresses the needs of patients entering treatment for the first time, as well as those who have been through rehabilitation previously and are seeking a more sustainable path to longterm recovery. Substance Use Disorder is a chronic, treatable illness and the Wellbridge approach examines the causes of a patient’s substance use and treats the whole person.
Struggling with substance use can be a lonely experience for patients, who are typically away from their friends and families.
That is why, in addition to a variety of evidence-
based treatments, established research, patient experience, quality metrics, and outcomes, Wellbridge employs the services of one four-legged, furry volunteer.
Oakley, a two year old English Labrador Retriever, is a certified therapy dog that has been the newest addition to the team. After completing an extensive training program that included time at assisted living facilities, hospitals and nursing homes, Oakley began her rounds at Wellbridge.
Each Saturday, Oakley and her owner, Wellbridge’s Krystal Keillor, spend hours working with groups of patients. Over the course of several 45 minute sessions, Oakley works her way around a circle of
seated patients, greeting each of them, often receiving belly rubs in return.
Keillor, who is a Certified Recovery Peer Advocate at Wellbridge, relies on her canine sidekick to be there as she provides supportive services and a recovery plan for patients. The comfort that Oakley provides is palpable for staff and patients.
“The patient response has been nothing short of incredible,” said Keillor. “Patients have stated that they come to the group with anxiety, stress, and depression. When they leave a group, they feel the complete opposite expressing calmness, serenity, gratitude, hopefulness, happiness.”
When not working in a group setting, Oakley is at Keillor’s
side, supplementing therapeutic visits with her soothing presence. This is particularly important during the difficult detoxification portion of patients’ stay. Withdrawal from any substance can be painful and debilitating. Moreover, many patients are missing their own pets at home while in treatment, and Oakley serves as an able stand-in.
In spite of her youth, Oakley brings advanced experience in treatment. She has been in longterm care facilities since being eight months old, previously serving at a separate treatment center in Connecticut. When she’s not working, Oakley lives with Keillor and the rest of their family in Wading River, NY.

Autism And Children
According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed
four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of
autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

Five-year-old Penny Sonbert, seven-year-old Teddy Sonbert, and nine-year-old Maxwell Sonbert of Merrick, NY received Certificates of Appreciation from Levittown VFW post 9592 and its auxiliary for their “endless patriotism, unselfishness, and support of our veterans,” during a special ceremony held at the post.
Each year, since their first birthdays, the children ask guests attending their birthday
parties to bring canned food to be donated to local food pantries, instead of gifts. The past two years, they’ve donated the food they collected to the Nassau County Veterans Food Pantry. In addition, they work with their school each Veterans Day to collect toiletries to send to troops overseas and to write letters to veterans. Auxiliary President Frances Inslee said, “Such a wonderful family who continue supporting our
veterans, we are proud and blessed to have these wonderful people in our Post family.” Maxwell, a third grader, and Penny, a Kindergartener, attend Levy Lakeside Elementary school in Merrick. Teddy, a second-grader with nonverbal autism, attends Birch Elementary School in Merrick. The kids say they are “very proud and happy” to receive their awards.
Nassau BOCES Announces Pilot Program With SUNY Empire State
Nassau BOCES is pleased to announce an exclusive pilot program with SUNY Empire State College. The pilot allows any student who successfully completes an asynchronous class through the Agency’s Online Learning Academy to gain automatic acceptance into SUNY Empire State College upon graduating high school.
Lynbrook UFSD student Matthew LaVerda is the first recipient of this honor. He recently graduated from Lynbrook’s Owl Success Academy, which offers classes through the Online Learning Academy, and was recognized at a recent Board of Education meeting.
“We are extremely grateful for our partnership with Nassau
BOCES in providing an online learning environment for our students. We are thrilled to have one of Lynbrook’s students recognize the importance of obtaining a high school diploma and taking full advantage of this BOCES supported program. We are so very proud of him and the opportunities that now lie before him,” said Dr. Melissa Burak, Superintendent, Lynbrook UFSD.
The Online Learning Academy enables school districts to provide a variety of courses that in-district faculty or facilities may not have available. It provides a remote learning option for Homebound or remote learners, enrollment in courses a district is not able to provide, opportunities for
students who may be unable to complete full days onsite, and remote credit recovery options for students needing to complete courses outside of the school environment or beyond the school day. Students can enroll in a single course or a full course schedule.
“We are already working on programs to pave a solid pathway for student success once they are admitted to SUNY Empire State College,” said Elisa Maggi, Supervisor for Nassau BOCES’ Center for Online Learning. “We look forward to working with other New York State BOCES to eventually roll this program out across the State.”
