The East Meadow School District’s W.T. Clarke High School and Middle School music department welcomed guests for the first East Meadow Children’s Concert on April 7.

One Voice, One Message 5K The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District once again hosted its One Voice, One Message 5K Run/ Walk on April 13.

The event is in its fifth year and is organized by the district’s student ambassadors, Dr. Joseph Netto, the school psychologist at the Meadowbrook Alternative Program, and Robyn Einbinder, a social studies chairperson at Wellington C. Mepham High School.

“Many members of the One Voice, One Message committee displayed tremendous teamwork as they worked together over the course of many weeks to plan the 5K Run/Walk,” said Einbinder.

“The student ambassadors also helped to plan and execute the event, lining the route to cheer on the participants, as well as offering route directional and water stations,” added Netto.

The event raised more

than $10,000 for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The Dental Plan For Everyone

Bellmore Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph Famularo and Board of Education trustees Jay L.T. Breakstone and Janet Goller garnered SCOPE awards during the 18th annual School District Awards Dinner, held at Villa Lombardi’s on March 18.

Dr. Famularo is pastpresident of the Nassau County Council of School Superintendents, currently co-chairs the NCCSS Legislation Committee, chairs the New York State Council of School Superintendents Legislation Committee, chairs the NCCSS Safety Committee, serves as a liaison for NCCSS with the Nassau/Suffolk School Boards and serves as vice president on the SCOPE Board. Dr. Famularo also serves on

advisory boards of several colleges and universities and currently chairs Adelphi University’s advisory board.

Mr. Breakstone began serving as a school district trustee in 1999. In addition to serving as the board’s vice president and president, he has served as the board’s Legislation Committee chairperson.

Mr. Breakstone is pastpresident of the NassauSuffolk School Boards Association. He is an appellate and general counsel to the firm of Parker Waichman, LLP, and has employed his attorney skills to advocate for the students of the Bellmore School District and Long Island.

He has also worked with lawmakers on behalf of Long Island public schools, students and communities.

Bellmore Board of

Education Vice President Janet Goller has served as a board of education trustee since 1995 after being active in the PTA and serving as PTA president.

In 2000, she became a member of the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District Board of Education, and has served as vice president and president of both boards multiple times.

A financial operations manager, Ms. Goller’s strong community connections and her experience serving the school districts and the communities she represents make her an invaluable asset.

The Bellmore School District community congratulates Dr. Famularo, Mr. Breakstone and Mrs. Goller on these deserving awards.

Blue For Autism Awareness To mark Autism Awareness Day on April 2, students and staff at John G. Dinkelmeyer Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District were dressed in blue. Members of the Students Against Destructive Decisions club created posters promoting Light It Up Blue, which is observed nationally.

Fifth-grade teacher Page Powers coordinated activities for Autism Awareness Day, including a collection drive for the Center for Development Disabilities in Woodbury, a school that serves children with autism. Dinkelmeyer students and staff were asked to donate tissues, notebooks and other supplies.

Ms. Powers also created a digital presentation about autism that was shared with teachers to show their students. She said that children will likely meet someone with autism in their lives, so she wanted to remind them to be accepting of people for who they are and to always choose kindness.

Library Dedication

John F. Kennedy High School in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District recently held the official dedication of their new library to former teacher Michael Dubin.

Dubin, a 30-year social studies teacher, posthumously bequeathed a donation to cover the cost of the library renovations.

“When I hear people talk about Mr. Dubin’s passion for history and teaching I can’t help but think of how well he would fit in with our current social studies

department,” said Principal Gerard Owenburg.

“Clearly, Kennedy High School meant a great deal to Mr. Dubin and his generous gift will impact a generation of students that were born after his retirement.”

Kristen Mogavero, the library media specialist at Kennedy High School, boasted about the latest offerings, including charging stations, a large smartboard that broadcasts school announcements and a library classroom with shared monitor desks

and a smartboard.

“We also now have flexible seating options to promote collaborative group work, including rolling chairs and a hightop counter seating,” Mogavero added.

The library also includes a new humanities research center that has been dedicated in his name.

“We, as a staff, can take great pride in how this donation symbolizes how much it means to each and every one of us to be a Kennedy teacher,” added Owenburg.

Writing Buddies Conducting research was a new experience for first graders at Park Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District, so they got some help from people who have been there, done that.

Sixth graders in Jenna Stack’s class worked with Robin Obey’s first graders to help them find information for their nonfiction books. The young writers chose topics, such as animals and sports, then had to do research to learn more. Each sixth

grader helped his or her buddy find information using learning resources available on iPads.

The first graders then went through several weeks or writing, revising and illustrating before publishing their books. On April 11, the sixth graders returned to see the finish products and leave remarks on compliment sheets.

Additionally, they helped their younger buddies create digital versions of the books using iMovie and Garage Band. The sixth

graders took pictures of the book covers and recorded the first graders as they read aloud, to create a product the youngsters could share with their families.

Ms. Obey said the students now keep their published books in their writing folders, which will stay with them through elementary school.

A second copy of each book went to the classroom reading library.

Young Artists Bloom Fifth and sixth graders recently expressed themselves through color at Park Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District.

A dozen students took part in an afterschool art enrichment program, which was hosted in partnership with the PTA. The weekly class was led

by math specialist Erica Feige. Students created canvas paintings in the style of Georgia O’Keefe.

After learning about the artist’s history and her famous pieces, it was their turn to sketch and then paint. Ms. Feige said that the project gave them a chance to explore different art techniques.

Each young artist was tasked with painting a floral arrangement. After eight weeks, their pieces were complete and put on display in the main lobby.

Students and teachers were invited the view the colorful works during an afterschool art show on April 11.

The Charity of the Month for May is: Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA) www.BACAworld.org

Bikers Against Child Abuse is a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization. BACA formed with the intent to create a safer environment for abused children. They exist as a body of bikers to empower children not to feel afraid of the world in which they live. They stand ready to lend support to their wounded friends by involving them with an established, united organization.

BACA works in conjunction with local and state officials who are already in place to protect children. BACA receives calls on their helpline (631-408-8218), which is taken by the Chapter Child Liaison. This member contacts the family and an initial visit is organized to meet the guardian and child at their home or another location. Following this visit, two BACA members are assigned as “Primaries” to the child who remain available for contact 24/7/365. A ride is then organized for the members of the Chapter to meet the child.

This is when a ceremony is performed to take the child into the BACA family, which is where the empowerment begins.

BACA supports each child according to their individual needs. Some services available for the child and their family include a physical presence at the home (24/7 if needed), visiting the child at school, escorting the child to and from court, and they even maintain a therapy fund for children needing assistance.

If you are interested in becoming a BACA member you must meet certain requirements.

Some of them are that you have regular access to a motorcycle, are 18 years or older, can pass an NCIC fingerprint check, can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events and that you have a desire to help abused children. If you meet the basic criteria, you can eventually become a “Cleared Supporter”, which is when you are assigned a Patched Member as your “Sponsor”. This member guides you through extensive training, which goes on for a minimum of at least one year before you can be considered eligible to become a full Patched Member.

Their meetings are held the second Sunday of every month (unless it’s a Holiday) at the American Legion Hall in Bohemia at 9:00 a.m.

Nope, You Don’t Have Writer’s Block.

We’ve all watched the scene in the movie where the frustrated writer is sitting at his computer, sighing and running his fingers through his hair as words fail to flow from his fingertips onto the screen. This effect was even more dramatic in the days where writers would stare blankly at typewriters, write a few shaby sentences, become disgusted and then ball up the mostly blank piece of paper and toss it into an already filled wastepaper basket.

These character’s were supposedly suffering from writer’s block, and “gasp!” their very livelihoods were on the line.

Unfortunately, for these fictional characters and for the thousands of you out there who want to write for personal expression, pleasure, or perhaps as a profession (not to mention all of the writing we all now have to do on social media), you have been misguided by the myth of writer’s block. Yes, writer’s block is a myth; a misnomer.

Here’s why... most people believe that one sits down in front of a computer keyboard to write.

Nope. The secret that myself, and many others who write for a living know, is that no writing actually takes place at the computer (or with a pen and notebook for that matter). Writing is simply... thought married with emotion. If you’re having a thought and there is a strong emotion behind it, you are writing. This stands to reason, since you are the screenwriter, director and producer of your life. When you are walking through a museum exhibit, you are writing. When you are listening to a beautiful piece of music that moves you, you are writing. When you are sharing a hearty laugh with someone, you are writing. When you are attempting to work through heartbreak, disappointment, trauma, anger, frustration or even love... my friends, you are writing.

Putting pen to paper or fingers to keyboard is not writing - that is the act of transcribing. By the time you sit down to “write,” it should already be written.

In fact, I refuse to ever write my Living Well column in the actual column format. I insist on

writing it somewhere else. I do not want my headshot and my column’s logo staring back at me.

Too much pressure. No thanks!

I transfer my words over to my actual column once I have written down my thoughts.

Lastly, here is my biggest trade secret I have to share when it comes to writing; some of my most engaging written words were actually created by talking to myself, out loud. Yes, your community newspaper’s columnist is a bit of a loony bird.

I talk to myself - it’s how I write.

And let me tell you, some of my most profound realizations about myself and about life have come from this stream of consciousness self-talk. Some of it is gibberish, but inevitably, some pearls come out. Shocked as anyone else, I run over to the nearest computer or notepad and get them down before they evaporate into thin air. Inspired thought is like a rare and elusive butterfly. You’re so awed by their beauty and divinity and before you know it, they’ve flown away. Capturing those moments is the art of writing.

Celebrating Cultures East Meadow High School’s Multicultural Club hosted a multicultural celebration on April 11 with various songs and performances to honor diversity in the community.

The assembly featured talent and cultural pride from students as they highlighted songs

and dances from such countries as Cuba, Dominican Republic, India, Italy, Jamaica, Nigeria and Pakistan, to name a few. The high school’s step team also thrilled the audience with a variety number.

“The multicultural celebration at East Meadow High

School shows the school community’s appreciation for diversity in our district,” said Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. David Casamento.
