n the Merrick School District, Chatterton School fourth-graders continued their Robotics Cycle recently, experimenting with new action and sense Cubelets. In groups, students assembled a variety of robots using Cubelets, which are magnetic blocks equipped with lights, wheels and sensors. Cubelets sense, think and act like a robot when snapped together. The fourth-graders were challenged to identify the function of a new Cubelet, and to make predictions.

Hope For Youth is hosting its Annual Run For Hope 5K in Heckscher State Park on May 14th beginning at 9 a.m. Proceeds from the run support Hope For Youth’s mission of facilitating positive change in youth and families on Long Island through residential, outpatient and preventive services.

Last year, the event was attended by over 200 participants who walked, jogged, and ran to help bring awareness to the agency mission and the programs offered to families in need. Rosie Rosemarie Kupencow – “Rosie,” as I always affectionately called her – was the very first friend I made when I started working here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers, just about 11 years ago.

The resident proofreader, she introduced herself to me right away, and made sure I felt welcome in this new, unfamiliar setting, showing me the ins and outs of the newspaper she had come to call home for close to a decade at that point.

In addition to being hired as an editorial assistant, I was brought on to help Rose, my new friend, with some of the weekly proofreading duties.

Armed with her magnifying glass and a stash of green pens – “only green,” she would say, “NEVER make corrections with anything else” – she quickly took me under her wing, and we became close companions, often taking breaks together outside in whatever patches of sun we could find, and occasionally heading out for lunch outings at Nathan’s, one of our favorite destinations.

She would always order the fish and chips from Arthur Treacher’s, then laugh hysterically as I looked on in horror, marveling at why someone would go to Nathan’s for anything other than a hotdog.

After a short time, we realized that not only had I attended high school with her daughter, Jennifer, but we now lived just a few short blocks away from each other, and we began to carpool frequently to and from work.

On one memorable return trip, during a rather heavy rainstorm, I infamously “drowned” my car during an ill-fated attempt to navigate down

her flooded street, despite her repeated warnings that it probably wasn’t going to end well.

She never did let me live that one down, deservedly so.

But that was Rose, always dispensing advice – some solicited, some not so much – and serving as the unofficial “work mother” to many of the younger employees.

In that capacity, a coworker and I took her along as a “chaperone” of sorts on my very first trip to Adventureland not so many years ago. As we made our way from one ride to another, taking care not to miss any, the air was filled with the sounds of screaming – not ours, but of our beloved Rosie, yelling, “Get me OFF this thing!!!” and “Why did I let you two talk me into this???”

I don’t think I have ever laughed so hysterically in my life.

Needless to say, that was our first and last trip to any amusement park. But the memories, well, those last a lifetime. (As does the framed photo of the three of us plummeting over “Adventure Falls” at the moment of impact, a priceless reminder of all the fun that was had that day.)

Just last week, Rose lost her battle with cancer, leaving a giant void here at South Bay – and in my heart. Her selfless determination to continue on over the past year was a perfect example of the type of person she was, always putting others first while forging ahead.

What an incredible person, one that is dearly missed by so many.

I’ll miss her sitting in the “friend” chair on the other side of my desk, coming to chat about life and work and family and friends and everything in between.

I’ll miss our goodnatured teasing back and forth... her imitations of my ballet positions... her self-deprecating analysis of her “fashion” sense – “don’t have a hair clip, use a paper clip!”... our phone conversations – in spite of her staunch refusal to ever get a cell phone, and her insistence on keeping important phone numbers on a crumbled piece of paper in her pocketbook… just seeing her smiling face every day at the office.

But mostly, I’ll miss my special friend.

This past December, in celebration of her birthday, Rose and I went out to dinner. She may not have been feeling like her old self, but it was truly like old times.

For over three hours, we sat and talked, just the two of us, reminiscing about the highlights and lowlights of our decade working together, chatting about the latest happenings in our lives… and we laughed, hysterically, about many of the same stories recounted here – and countless others, some not suitable for publication in a family newspaper!

We could have continued talking for three more hours, easily; it seemed that neither of us wanted that night, that moment, to end.

I will always treasure it.

How lucky I was to have her in my life – there to guide the way as I began this new chapter all those years ago… and there to see me through the journey every step of the way since.

Rose, you will never be forgotten – not by me, and not by those who had the wonderful pleasure of knowing you, of loving you, of having you touch their lives.

May you be at peace now.

Top Athletes In addition to an intense athletic schedule, Christopher serves as senior class president, National Honor Society co-vice president, and is a member of the Science Honor Society, Foreign Language Honor Society for Spanish and Tri-M Honor Society as a base clarinetist. He is also a drum major and member of the Science Olympiad team, where he participated in the state tournament. This spring, Christopher will continue his sport as a member of the spring track team. He will attend the University of Pennsylvania this fall where he will pursue a career in environmental studies.

As a senior, Allyson has been a varsity cheerleader for three years and was

instrumental in securing a team county title and bringing her cheer team to the state level competition in the Small Varsity Division I division.

Allyson hones her skills as a dancer at Miss Claire’s Studio of Dance and was designated as an AllCounty cheerleader, as well as a scholar-athlete.

Allyson is an Advanced Placement Scholar and a member of the National Honor Society, Science Honor Society and Foreign Language Honor Society for speaking Italian. She is also a member of the school’s marching band as a clarinetist and and active member of the Key Club. Allyson will attend the University of Delaware this fall where she plans on pursuing a career in nursing.

“Our Youth Shelter Program is almost ready to open.

We’ve spent the last few

months renovating the house with fresh paint, new appliances, and donated furniture. The hope is that teens living in neglectful or abusive homes will hear about the home and contact us over Facebook or through a trusted adult to get help.

That’s why we reach out to the community with our run every year. We need to get the word out

to these kids that they have an organization looking out for them!”

Like last year’s successful event, the run will include music, refreshments and a Zumba warm up.

Frog vs. Toad Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center first-graders in Bellmore are more acquainted with the differences between frogs and toads after a hands-on demonstration of their characteristics.

Science consultant

Brian Wallrapp introduced the students to Bob the bullfrog and Tammy the tree frog as he explained the differences in the shapes of their bodies, skin texture, position of their eyes on the head and vocalizations.

The lesson precedes the first-grade science unit on the life cycle of frogs and toads in which students will observe the growth of tadpoles in their classrooms.

The Wantagh School District is pleased to announce the accomplishments of two star athletes. Christopher Mountanos (indoor track) was recognized as a News 12 ScholarAthlete and Newsday named cheerleader Allyson Ottomano as Nassau County Cheerleader of the Year.

During the winter indoor track season, Christopher set a Wantagh High School record in the 600 meter and assisted his relay team in winning the Nassau County championship for the 4x800 relay. He was also county and conference champion in the 600 meter, named All-Conference in the 300 meter and a member of the All-County designated 4x800 relay team.

Supporting Ride for Life Lee Road Elementary School students in Levittown attended an assembly with guest speaker Paul Weissman, who contracted Lou Gehrig’s Disease or ALS three years ago. The student body will be raising money for the Ride for Life campaign, which seeks to find a cure for this

neurological and incurable disorder.

During the assembly, the students learned about the disease and the Ride for Life organization. Mr. Weissman explained that when you have big life problems, it is best to try and fix them. “Never give up or lose hope,” he said.

“Be willing to defy the odds

and remain optimistic.”

Also in attendance was Barbara Brown, Ride for Life board member and educational coordinator.

She mentioned how the Ride for Life participants are looking forward to passing the school on May 17th on their way to Manhattan.

Essay Contest Winner Jean Mahn, a senior at Division Avenue High School, is the winner of the Best Essay Award (high school division) for the 11th annual Japan Center Essay Competition, sponsored by Canon USA and organized by the Japan Center at Stony Brook University.

As a first-place winner, Jean won a $3,000 scholarship and a Canon Camera. She also received a special award from the Consulate General of Japan and has been invited to the residence of the Japanese

ambassador in Manhattan on May 21st.

Jean’s essay described her experience creating a sculpture, titled “Wave of Piece,” entered into the 2015 Long Island’s Best Young Artist Competition sponsored by the Heckscher Museum of Art. The free standing sculpture holds paper cranes and honors the life and death of Sadako Sasaki, a Japanese girl who contracted leukemia after the bombing of Hiroshima.

Japanese legend states that if one folds a thousand

paper cranes a wish will be granted, but Sadako died after folding 644 cranes.

In honor of her wish, Jean created “Wave of Peace” to represent the selflessness in Sadako’s soul.

In her essay, Jean said, “The idea that the simple act of folding a paper crane could connect two people from a different time, culture and generation is beautiful and gives me hope that Sadako’s “Wave of Peace” can transcend borders, belief systems and cultures.”

In Remembrance A commemorative brick on the Division Avenue High School pathway was placed with pride and remembrance of Kevin Regan on April 18th.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald and High School Principal Joan Lorelli were joined by the late board of education president’s family to honor his many years of

service and devotion to the Levittown Public Schools.

Wife Joann Regan, daughter Deirdre O’Regan and her family (Kevin, Sean, Austin, Tara, and Connor), Assistant Principal John Coscia, and Student Council advisers Lynn Castellano and Gerard Marzigliano watched as the Regan grandchildren fit the brick

into its permanent home.

Sean O’Regan, a Division Avenue High School junior said, “I’m glad the family was there to reflect on the great things my grandfather did for so many people in Levittown. The brick looks amazing and serves as a little reminder that he is watching over me when I step onto the field.”

Patriotism through Art Star Pendergrass, a junior at Division Avenue High School in Levittown, is a regional winner in the VFW Post 9592’s Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest. The acrylic painting depicts her face covered partially by the American flag with only her eyes showing and facing forward. As a regional winner, Star’s

painting will now be judged among contestants on the state level.

The VFW’s Young American Creative Patriotic Arts Contest originated in 1979 as a venue to recognize talented student-artists in grades 9-12 and to encourage patriotism among the nation’s youth.

Star explained that in her

art piece, she is wearing a mask of the American flag to symbolize the government’s protection of people through their rights.

Star also enjoys sculpture art and is currently taking weekend courses at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

She is also working on building her art portfolio.

MacArthur High School freshmen Ashleigh Lecca and Jennifer Gattus were first-place ($200) and honorable mention ($35) winners, respectively, in the annual Martin J. Kelly Writing Contest presented by the Irish Cultural

Society of the Garden City Area.

This year’s 588 entrants from Nassau County analyzed the rhetorical strategies used by the writers of the Proclamation of Irish Republic and read aloud during the Easter

Rising, also known as the Easter Rebellion, in Dublin, Ireland in April 1916.

Both students have been invited to attend an awards ceremony at the Garden City Library on May 4th.

Pop Art Aid Wantagh High School student-artists demonstrated how art connects to the community during the second annual Animal Shelter Pop Art Sale. Under the direction of teacher Jacqueline Gallo, students sold pop art prints highlighting dogs and cats from the Hempstead Town

Animal Shelter. Money from the print sales went to the shelter to assist with medical costs and food.

“This is a way to connect students with the community and to show that art has a purpose,” Ms. Gallo said.

Prior to the pop art sale, students studied

printmaking and pop artists. They then simplified the images of animals being housed at the animal shelter and promoted the image through various colors to create original looking animal portraits.

Tax Prep Skills an important life skill.

“So many people don’t understand taxes,” she said.

“Even if they don’t prepare their own, they should be adept at understanding the tax preparation process.”

Prior to working with the students, volunteers received a packet of fake information, including their employment, salary, names of children, marital status, etc. The packet also

contained the volunteer’s W-2 form from which the students were expected to ask their clients pertinent information to complete the tax return.

Ms. Campagnino explained that the students had to also be familiar with new federal and state tax laws regarding medical prescription purchases and presidential campaign donations.

In support of national Autism Awareness Month, the Wantagh High School Key Club held an event to highlight awareness of this cause. Under the direction of co-advisers Jacqueline Fiorillo and Heidi Felix and president Christina DePaulis, students and Key Club members gathered in the school’s cafeteria to listen to speakers and to browse information about autism at various booths.

Beatty explained that having an autistic child influences everything she does. She encouraged students to make autistic students feel safe and invited. “You are a real force for change for students on the spectrum,” she told Key Club members.

Speaker and speech pathologist Louise Kadzicki said having an autistic child is sometimes confounding, tiring, frustrating and wondrous.

“We are not interested in pity, but welcome your compassion and friendliness,” she said.

Ms. Felix also encouraged students to include autistic students in their activities and conversations and to try and make them feel special.

During the event, each of the students signed a pledge, promising to continue a show of support for those with autism.

In honor of Earth Day, Chatterton School fifthgraders of Lori Marr’s and Lindsay Zender’s classes invited the school to participate in Limit the Waste Day. To decrease their impact on the earth, the class created Limit the Waste Day where students limit the amount of waste they dispose including water bottles, paper and food.

Students used scrap paper from previous projects and assignments to use throughout the day.

In addition, Ms. Marr’s and Ms. Zender’s classes created Buncee presentations using animations to highlight facts about the Earth’s pollution and ways to reduce their impact on the planet. Among the ways to reduce human pollution,

students encouraged their classmates to take quicker and cooler showers, use reusable water bottles, forks and knives and ride their bicycles instead of driving in a car.

Concluding their presentation, each fifthgrader shared a personal experience where they felt most at nature with poems, stories and pictures.

Celebrating Poetry In celebration of National Poetry Month, Northside School students in Levittown participated in an English language arts activity called “Poem in Your Pocket Day.”

Teacher Dyanne Case explained that students carried either a favorite or original poem in their pocket. When approached by a teacher, the student then either read or recited

the poem from memory.

National Poetry Month was founded in 1996 and is celebrated by millions of students nationwide, marking poetry as an important part of language.

English Honor Society

On April 19th, all three high schools in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District welcomed new members into the prestigious National English Honor Society, an organization which recognizes the merits of accomplished students and faculty in the field of English Language Arts. To qualify for NEHS membership, students must maintain a certain GPA, take part in at least two writing competitions throughout the school year, contribute to an English related activity, attend a school arts event and complete a rigorous course of study in their English classes.

At Sanford H. Calhoun High School, 32 students were inducted into the school’s NEHS chapter, led by English teacher Dawn Boland. Current NEHS president, senior Josh Aberman, presented a keynote speech at the ceremony about how literature changed his life

and continues to affect him as a student and an individual. Senior officers Rachel Gershengoren (vice president) and Kristi Chan (treasurer) presented each inductee with a membership pin, certificate and a personalized gift: a copy of Ayn Rand’s “Atlas Shrugged,” signed by one or more of their past English teachers to congratulate them on their achievement.

At John F. Kennedy High School, 21 students were inducted into the school’s NEHS chapter, led by English teacher Kimberly Miller. Current NEHS president, senior Rebecca Stekol, presented a keynote speech at the ceremony about the power of writing and its ability to liberate individuals and society. English teacher Steven Mastromariono and English Chairperson Adeline Atkins presented each inductee with their certificates.

and veteran English teacher, was inducted and acknowledged for his dedication to his students both inside and outside of the classroom. Sheffield has taught English at Kennedy High School for 13 years and has directed 13 drama productions.

Wellington C. Mepham High School welcomed young adult author Kate Karyus Quinn as a keynote speaker for its induction ceremony, who shared anecdotal stories of childhood creativity that led her to pursue her dream to write novels.

Mepham’s Poet Laureate Maura Singleton shared an original poem penned for the event. Recycled Melody In honor of Earth Day, Meadowbrook Elementary School students learned about the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling with musical performances from Bash the Trash.

Members of Bash the Trash introduced the basic sounds, vibrations and

designs of their recycled instruments emphasizing how found objects can be used in different ways such as water jugs, pipes and Styrofoam.

In addition, fourth- and fifth-graders dived deeper into the musical, scientific and environmental concepts of instruments

National Recognition that demonstrate exemplary support for the arts and the outstanding work that makes the arts an essential component of a student’s education.

Frank Creter, district director of art, technology and family and consumer sciences, said that the board of education’s unwavering support has created Levittown’s thriving arts program, for which everyone in the district is proud. “I am proud to be a part of a learning community that

embraces the arts and understands the value and impact of the arts in the lives of our students,” he said.

Vincent D’Ulisse, curriculum associate for music, also congratulated the board trustees for this recognition by saying, “I am proud to see that two prominent national organizations have recognized the board as finalists for this level of commitment not always found in every school district.”

Wantagh High School students and staff learned how a limited budget affects the food choices they make during participation in the school’s Food Stamp Challenge. Only being able to spend $3.75 for food and beverages during the entire day, which is the average benefit for a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program recipient, gave participants a view of the struggle by millions of Americans to obtain nutritious food.

Teacher Iris Kline organized the program.

She explained, “While living on a food stamp budget for just a day cannot come close to the struggles

encountered by families, it does provide those who take the Challenge with a new perspective and greater understanding.”

Participants were given a list of average pricing for food prepared at home, including Honey Nut Cheerios and milk ($.60), frozen pizza ($1.10) and baked chicken with bread crumbs, brown rice, broccoli and salad ($4.07).

They were also required to record their spending and to take into account any food supplemented from home.

“Challenge participants found themselves forced to make food purchase choices on a limited budget

and learned how difficult it is to avoid hunger, afford nutritious foods and stay healthy without adequate resources,” Kline said.

In addition to the Challenge, classrooms attended a food insecurity lesson about the uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate foods and having to cut back on food due to not knowing the source of the next meal. Student participants were also instructed to reflect on the Challenge by writing about their experiences. There was also a food drive to supplement the local food pantries.

Heroes of Lakeside In the Merrick School District, Norman J. Levy Lakeside School sixthgrade graduating class made sandwiches for the homeless during their annual Sandwich-A-Thon.

On April 15th, students

gathered in the Cub’s Cave to put their culinary skills to the test, stacking bread, meat and cheese together to help the less fortunate.

In assembly lines, sixthgraders compiled boxes of sandwiches comprised of

food from local vendors and packaged bags of cookies to accompany each sandwich.

The class of 2016 packaged more than 2,000 sandwiches and 600 cookies and baked goods.

Paw-sitivity In the Merrick School District, Birch School third-graders enhanced their social and emotional learning with the help of two visiting puppies through the North Shore Animal League’s Mutt-igrees Program.

The Mutt-i-grees Curriculum teaches and reinforces critical skills that are the foundation of academic success, including empathy, cooperation and ethical

decision-making.

These skills help students care about themselves, the people around them, animals and the environment.

During the program, North Shore Animal League representatives and volunteers discussed the history of their animal shelter and how they assist animals with grooming, medical care and training.

They also educated students about identifying

animal body language and how to react when animals are frightened, angry and sad.

While playing with the two puppies, the North Shore Animal League asked the third-graders to name them. Out of the choices, the classes voted for “Popcorn” and “Cookie” as the names of the Hound and German Shepard puppies.

New Appointment

Kate Freeman was appointed by the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District’s Board of Education at its April 6th meeting to the position of assistant superintendent of business, effective July 1st.

Freeman, who currently works as an administrator in the district’s business office, will takeover from Cynthia Strait Régal, who is the current deputy superintendent and is set to retire June 30th.

“We are fortunate that we work together daily, so I am able to expose Kate to the most demanding parts of the job,” Strait Régal said. “I know that I will be leaving the business office in good hands.”

Strait Régal has spent the past 13 years with the district – 27 years in administration education overall. She previously served as assistant superintendent of business from 2003-09 and most recently as deputy

superintendent.

With more than 16 years of experience in business administration, Freeman has assisted in budget development and administration, provided financial oversight of state and federal grants, supervised business office staff and assisted in negotiations.

The pair has worked in tandem for several years.

“I have had the good fortune to work alongside Cynthia for 12 years as a school business administrator and prior to that as an accountant,” Freeman added. “Over the past few months, I have worked closely with district administration to become more familiar with the duties of the position.”

The role of assistant superintendent of business includes being responsible for the financial operations of the district.

Language Inductions The Department of World Languages held its annual honor society induction ceremony at John F. Kennedy High School on April 19th and at Wellington C. Mepham High School on April 20th.

Students of French, Italian and Spanish were honored for their outstanding work in a world language.

The events were organized by Kennedy teachers Francesca Engelson and Mepham teachers Andrew Franklin and Betsy Siegelaub.

“The inductions were student-led ceremonies that featured student highlights from the year and student musical and poetry presentations in French, Italian and Spanish,” said Renée

Fallon, world languages chairperson.

and every level loved the activity. Best of all, the students surprised themselves with how much fun they had creating poetry in new, different ways.”

The poetry station event ran from April 5th-14th, with classes coming in almost every available period.

Calhoun students who wished to read and perform their own original works also competed in The Voice: Slam Poetry Style on April 15, a competition in the style of the popular TV show “The Voice.”

Seventeen students wrote two original poems, one based on the theme, “The Letter Never Delivered,” and performed them without prompts for five teacher coaches, who then selected students for their teams.

Several underclassmen took to the Calhoun stage for the first time and dazzled the audience.

English teacher Kelly Martin commented, “It was a treat to hear new voices in the competition for not only the teachers and coaches, but for the audience as a whole.” The event, set up in the Little Theatre, was well-attended by several English classes,

who ultimately voted Mr. Formato’s team the victor.

Students who wanted to read poetry in a relaxed, less competitive environment had the chance to shine at the Java Room on April 22nd.

Students were encouraged to get up and read their original poems or poetry from published authors before a few English classes in an openmic style setting.

Grand Avenue Middle School teachers selected one student per team to read a favorite poem aloud during morning announcements at various intervals during the month. This provided an opportunity for all students, faculty and staff to appreciate poetry throughout the month.

At Kennedy High School, English teacher Vivian Lopez recited a poem during the morning announcements at the start of each day. She read poems in various languages and chose poems that expressed numerous themes.

Finally, in all buildings, many teachers created poetry mini-units or lessons to celebrate National Poetry Month.

Although the cheerleading season may be over, the Sanford H. Calhoun High School cheerleaders continue to cheer for a cause. The Calhoun cheerleading program has a history of being a charitable organization and in the past few years, they have raised money for breast cancer and Relay for Life.

Keeping the spirit of service alive in the off season, they continued fundraising and giving back. Many of these students are balancing a spring sports schedule, school work and

afterschool jobs, along with the commitment to raising awareness.

This past April, the cheerleading program helped fulfill a MakeA-Wish when Calhoun hosted a student for the day. Elsey Kok had the full Cahoun High School experience, including a spirited cheerleading practice in the afternoon.

The athletes enjoyed teaching her many cheers and dances they perform on the sidelines at games.

More recently, the program hosted a cheerleading clinic, where part of the proceeds raised were

donated to the American Cancer Society for the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District Relay for Life. It was inspiring to see so many people coming together with a shared love of cheerleading to raise awareness.

The Calhoun cheerleading program plans to continue their charitable nature throughout the remainder of the school year raising money for the May 13th Relay for Life at Calhoun High School. They are also planning more activities to take place during the fall season.

Honor Society Inductees

The National Honor Society of Division Avenue and MacArthur high schools in Levittown collectively inducted 146 students during traditional candlelighting ceremonies celebrating the organization’s tenets of scholarship, leadership, service, character and citizenship.

The names of teachers selected by the inductees as educators of excellence and influence were also recognized, as well as Teacher of the Year Gerard Marzigliano.

In his address, MacArthur High School Principal Joseph Sheehan said, “We may not know what destiny holds for the

students we honor here tonight, but MacArthur High School is a much better place because the inductees are a part of it.“ After officers Gregory Matousek (president), Ashley Kim (vice president), Laura Tarone (recording secretary), Jared Wolfe (treasurer) and Kevin Wallace (corresponding secretary) lit the candles, the inductees recited the organization’s pledge.

Science teacher Eric Tompkins was also honored as the chapter’s Teacher of the Year.

Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District students and faculty jumped at the chance to create, perform and listen to poetry throughout the month of April.

The English departments and the library staff created a number of engaging events to help celebrate students’ love of literature and to support budding writers, especially after the success of the BellmoreMerrick Writing Festival earlier this year.

Sanford H. Calhoun High School librarian Kathryn Elefterion created poetry stations in which students could create different types of visual poetry in blocks of time. A few options included blackout poetry, in which students blacked out words in the pages of old books with Sharpies, leaving behind a few words in a brand-new poem; newspaper poems, in which students cut out letters and shapes from magazines and glued them together; and paint chip poems, in which students used the names of the colors to create themed poems.

Twenty students from Holy Trinity High School participated in the preliminary round of the Long Island Math Fair back in February, and 11 of them brought home medals in the final round held on April 15th at Hofstra University.

Gold medalists were: Binglun Jiang from Massapequa and Hannah Muller from Levittown.

Silver medalists: Julia

DiGrazia from Bellmore and Patrick Harten from Hicksville. Bronze medalists were: John Barry from East Meadow, Andrea Campos from Massapequa, Ambar DiGiorgio from Freeport, Louis Farino from Merrick, Amy Jacob from East Meadow, Carol Nguyen from Westbury and Ashwinder Parmar from Queens Village.

These students are all part of Holy Trinity’s

S.T.E.M. program. Math and S.T.E.M. teacher Mary Clare Pellett was extremely proud of all.

“Every year, we bring more and more students and every year they are more and more successful. I am so proud of these kids.

Their hard work really paid off.” Holy Trinity was the only Catholic high school represented in the medal round.

Teachers Granted Tenure as a leave replacement teacher at Shore Road School and then as a third-grade teacher at Winthrop Avenue School.

She currently teaches first grade at the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center.

A sixth-grade mathematics teacher at Shore Road School, Mr. Merz joined the Bellmore

staff in 2009 as a teaching assistant and then became a leave replacement teacher in a first-grade classroom. He also taught second- and fifth-grade students prior to his current assignment.

In the Merrick School District, Chatterton School fourth-graders continued their Robotics Cycle this week experimenting with new action and sense Cubelets.

In groups, students assembled a variety of robots using Cubelets, which are magnetic blocks equipped with CUBE CHARACTERISTICS - Chatterton School fourth-graders continued their lights, wheels and sensors. Robotics Cycle this week experimenting with new action and sense Cubelets. Photos Cubelets sense, think courtesy of: Merrick School District and act like a robot when snapped together.

Utilizing their critical thinking skills, knowledge of robotics, and each other, the fourth-graders were challenged to identify the function of a new Cubelet, and to make predictions about what each would do. The Cubelets are quite unique, with some having sensitivity to light and temperature, while others can beep and spin.
