n recognition of Earth Day on April 22nd, students at the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center took part in several initiatives. To kickoff a morning of celebration, the Bellmore kindergartners marched through the auditorium styling decorated hats, which were made out of recycled materials, including bottles, cans, paper and cereal boxes.

The District’s youngest students showcased their handmade hats on stage for visitors before singing songs.

Wayne Hall, Mayor of the Village of Hempstead will be speaking to the media and the volunteers to thank them for their support.

National Women Build Week, held May 2nd-10th, challenges women to devote at least one day to building simple, decent and affordable housing in their local communities. More than 62,000 women from all 50 states have volunteered in previous years.

“We are excited to participate in National Women Build Week,” said Michel Pfeiffer, Executive Director of Nassau County Habitat.

“This is a great opportunity for women of all skill levels to come together to help a family in need of better housing.”

Lowe’s helped launch National Women Build Week in 2008, and each year provides the support of Lowe’s Heroes employee volunteers and conducts how-to clinics at stores to teach volunteers construction skills. This year, Lowe’s contributed nearly $2 million to

It’s amazing the degree to which our media consumption has changed as a society through the years. In the last decade alone, from the time I graduated from C.W. Post’s Journalism program, social media has quite literally taken over – for better or worse.

What was once perfectly satisfactory to read in the next morning’s paper now must be transmitted instantly across a host of media, in some cases, at the expense of accuracy.

While this isn’t exactly a unique realization, it was brought to new light at the recent Society of Professional Journalists Region I Conference that I attended last week at Hofstra University. Again and again,

the same theme was revisited – how can we, as journalists, learn to be so-called “experts” on everything, able to take on any task asked of us on the fly, all in an effort to transmit to the masses before the millions of others out there doing the same thing? It’s a tall order, one that, just 10 years ago, wasn’t quite so relevant.

Couple that with the fact that literally anyone with a smartphone can capture an image or video, add some copy and a sound bite and, theoretically, paint him/ herself as a journalist. All it takes is the vast landscape of the Internet to take a tidbit to the masses via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, whatever; and, before you know it, you have a viral sensation that, just minutes prior, was

nothing more than gossip.

Amazing, isn’t it?

Take that to the next level, and it is nearly impossible to steer clear of spoiler alerts for your favorite TV shows, movies, books, anything… if you’re not planning on watching it live, you had best engage in a self-imposed media blackout until your DVR is warmed up. This, from the person who decided to wait an hour or so before catching up on last night’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy.

Enough said.

Ten years ago, that wouldn’t have been a problem.

Like it or not, this is the world we now live in. The sooner we embrace it, learn to live with it and adapt our lives to the changing media landscape, the better.

Women in Hempstead, New York are invited to help address the need for affordable housing throughout the community during Habitat for Humanity’s eighth annual National Women Build Week. Habitat for Humanity, Nassau County (HFHNC) is one of more than 300 Habitat affiliates nationwide hosting Women Build projects with support from Lowe’s, Habitat’s longtime partner in the event.

On May 2nd and May 6th, local volunteers will be responsible for raising all four walls as well as installing the roof shell for HFHNC’s brand new home build in Hempstead.

Coming To Life Inspiring individuals came to life as Levittown’s Gardiners Avenue Elementary School fourth graders created a living wax museum.

This unique project showcased the students’ research on persons who inspire them and provided an opportunity to teach fellow classmates facts about these important and interesting individuals.

“The students enjoyed the opportunity to step into someone else’s life and teach their schoolmates about what they learned,” teacher Gale Glickman said.

The students first researched their individual by finding information in the library and on the Internet. They created a biography poster, which included illustrations

of their subject, famous quotes by and about their individual and fun facts.

The students, dressed in costume, then lined up much like a museum and “came to life” as peers gave them a tap. Reading a prepared speech, the guests learned about impressive artists, pioneers, political figures and scientists.

Design Winner MacArthur High School student Nicholas Brennan created the winning graphic t-shirt design in the Nassau Music Educators Association T-shirt Design Contest.

Student-musicians wore the t-shirts and sweatshirts during the All-County

music festivals earlier this year. Nicholas created the circular design containing a prominently centered treble clef during teacher Deja Gomes-Vance’s graphic design class.

NMEA public relations representative Nathan Garfinkel said that 200

designs from 56 districts were submitted to the annual contest and that more than 3,000 shirts have been sold. For his winning entry, Nathan was presented with a $100 gift card.

Long Island Heart Ball

The National Honor Society of Levittown’s MacArthur High School inducted 87 new members during a traditional candle lighting ceremony.

The evening was punctuated with words of wisdom, musical interludes by the string orchestra and MacApella, and the honoring of teachers and staff.

Vice President Joseph Elia, Recording Secretary Samantha Berg, Treasurer Christopher Simonetti and Corresponding Secretary Brianne Giuliano lit the ceremonial candles, representing the tenets of scholarship, leadership, service, character and citizenship prior to the induction of new members.

raise their right hand and take an oath before being called to the stage to receive their certificates.

Star Artists A culmination of weeks of hard work, artists in grades K-6, along with their friends and families, celebrated their masterpieces during the opening of the 2015 Bellmore Stars Art Gallery at the district office on April 20th.

Approximately 40 pieces

of Bellmore student works were exhibited in matching frames, which were donated by Bellmore School District alumnus James Perna. Students received certificates of achievement for their accomplishments.

The hard work was conducted under the watchful eyes of

art teachers Michelle Block and Stephen Gorey, and the pieces will remain on display for one year.

Students used painting, drawing and collages to express themselves along with tempera paint, watercolor and charcoal.

Celebrating The Earth In recognition of Earth Day on April 22nd, students at the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center took part in several initiatives.

To kickoff a morning of celebration, the Bellmore kindergartners marched through the auditorium styling decorated hats, which were made out of recycled materials,

including bottles, cans, paper, and cereal boxes.

The District’s youngest students showcased their handmade hats on stage for visitors before singing songs including “The Reinhard Rising Stars Song,” “Spring Is Here” and “This Land Is Your Land.”

As a follow-up to the kindergarten show,

students in first and second grade held a musical performance of their own before venturing outside and beautifying the school grounds through the planting of a tree.

Kindergartners, in the meantime, worked on an in-class activity with smaller plants.

Breakfast Of Champions Twenty-two East Meadow High School students were recently recognized for their exemplary character and conduct at the school’s Breakfast of Champions ceremony.

Breakfast of Champions is a student recognition program designed to highlight students who consistently make positive contributions to the school’s community.

Faculty and staff

To assist in the district’s campaign to raise awareness for autism, students at Lee Avenue Elementary School in the Levittown School District wore blue to symbolize their support for the

thousands of individuals and several classmates who have been diagnosed with this disorder.

Fifth-grade teacher Eileen Vogel and her students took the opportunity to pose for a

nominated students based on a variety of positive qualities, including generosity toward others, respect for peers and faculty, personal integrity and hard work. Students received recognition awards from faculty and staff at the ceremony.

HOMELESS AWARENESS - On April 18th & 19th, youth from Venturing Crew 130, along with other Venturers from Nassau County, participated in a homeless LIFECYCLE STUDY - Gardiners Avenue Elementary School kindergarten students awareness and service program. The youth spent the evening sleeping in a cardboard and their teachers are pictured with the Levittown Board of Education after a box with little comfort items. Each also helped to collect and sort donated clothing presentation on the life cycles of frogs, chickens, ladybugs and butterflies. As the deadline for paying the second half 2014-2015 School Tax approaches, Hempstead Town Receiver of Taxes Don Clavin advises taxpayers of the payment options provided by his office.

Individuals who prefer to make payments in person can avail themselves of the town’s two satellite offices, the mobile tax office and the ‘EZ-Pay Drive Thru’ payment window located behind the Hempstead Tax Office. In addition, tax bills can be paid by credit card or e-check, online or via telephone. Payments received or postmarked

by Monday, May, 11th will be penalty-free, as the payment due date of May 10th falls on a Sunday.

“In addition to extending hours at the Hempstead Tax Office during peak collection times, our ‘EZPay Drive Thru’ payment window, located behind the Hempstead Tax Office, allows our customers to make payments from the comfort of their cars,” said Clavin. The drive through window will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 11th and will accept check and money order payments.

times (May 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 11th) will be 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The fully-staffed Hempstead office accepts all forms of payment and can assist constituents with account inquiries.

“My office recently negotiated to lower the convenience fees charged by Official Payments Corporation for the processing of e-check and credit card payment transactions,” said Clavin.

Electronic check payments incur a flat fee of $1.50, while credit card payments incur a total of 2.35% of the total tax payment (minimum fee $1).

Hempstead Town receives no portion of these fees.

To pay electronically, visit www.TOH.LI and follow the ‘Receiver of Taxes’ link to ‘Online Tax Payments,’ or call Official Payments Corporation toll-free at 1.877.306.6056.

Satellite offices located at Rock Hall Museum (199 Broadway, Lawrence) and Levittown Hall (201 Levittown Parkway, Hicksville) will receive tax payments (checks and money orders only) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 11th.

The mobile tax office will visit the following locations from 11:30 a.m.

to 1:30 p.m.: • Friday, May 1st – Merrick Senior Center, 2550 Clubhouse Road, Merrick • Monday, May 4th – Oceanside TOH Parking Lot O-3, Davison Avenue, Oceanside • Tuesday, May 5th – Elmont Memorial Library, 700 Hempstead Turnpike, Elmont • Wednesday, May 6th – Franklin Square Senior Center, 1182 Martha Place, Franklin Square “While no one ever enjoys paying their taxes, Supervisor Murray and I are committed to providing ways to make it more convenient for residents to do so. Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent.

Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease.

Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease.

That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.
