Flushing To Start In Bellmore South Bellmore On May 1st

Liberty is commencing its annual spring flushing program as part of its routine distribution system maintenance to help ensure quality water service to Liberty customers. Starting May 1, annual flushing will begin in Bellmore and South Bellmore. To learn more about when flushing is scheduled to occur in a specific neighborhood, residents are asked to visit https://new-yorkwater.libertyutilities. com/all/residential/ and click ‘Spring Flushing Schedule’ in News and Events.

“Water main flushing is an important part of our operations and maintenance programs to remove harmless mineral and sediment buildup that can cause water to become discolored,” said Liberty Director of Operations, Brenda Wall. “Our flushing program positively impacts water quality while also ensuring all fire hydrants are operating properly, with the adequate flow needed in the event of an emergency.”

Water mains are flushed by opening fire hydrants in specific locations throughout each community to increase water flow to the area. While crews are performing flushing operations, residents may experience a temporary drop in water pressure and/or discolored water. If you experience discolored water, please allow the water to run in your faucet until it is once again clear, which shouldn’t be more than a minute or two.

In order for residents to better prepare for flushing in their neighborhood, Liberty asks that they consider the following tips and steps:

· Make note on your calendar of your community’s scheduled

· If discolored water stains your laundry, do not put it in the dryer. Rewash clothes right away with a heavy-duty detergent and add a rust remover.

· Draw water needed for cooking ahead of scheduled flushing time and set aside a large bottle of water in the refrigerator for drinking or future use.

· If water pressure or volume appears low after the flushing has finished, inspect the faucet screens for any trapped particles.

Strong communities are able to thrive thanks to the efforts of their residents, including those who give up their free time to volunteer with local charitable organizations. Though the impact of volunteers is often seen through the lens of the projects they help to initiate and complete, there’s no denying just how valuable

The Impact Of Volunteers

volunteers are from an economic standpoint. In its 2018 “Volunteering in America Report,” AmeriCorps, an organization dedicated to strengthening communities and fostering civic engagement through service and volunteering, reported that Americans volunteered nearly 6.9 billion hours worth an estimated $167 billion in

2017. Volunteering figures to be even more valuable in the months and years ahead as towns, cities and countries look to recover from a global pandemic that claimed millions of lives and devastated economies big and small. As the world attempts to rebuild itself once the pandemic has ended, volunteers can play vital roles in reestablishing

their communities. In fact, many people have already made that recognition. According to data from the professional social networking site LinkedIn, the site’s users had added more than 110,00 volunteer activities to their profiles between the early stages of the pandemic in 2020 and the end of summer 2020.

American Parkinson Disease Association Celebrates The Importance Of Community & Connection During Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month

April is Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month and the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA)

Information & Referral Center of Suffolk County is hard at work to raise awareness of Parkinson’s disease (PD) and to celebrate the important connections that help foster a supportive community for people impacted by PD. Through a nationwide network of Chapters and Information & Referral Centers, APDA works tirelessly to provide the support, education and research that helps people impacted by PD live life to the fullest. Often the first line of defense after a diagnosis, APDA connects people to the information they need to feel more in control; to the medical experts who can help them manage their disease; and to the support and services

that can help them feel less alone throughout their PD journey.

During the month of April, the APDA Information & Referral Center at St. Catherine of Siena and St. Charles Hospital in Suffolk County has a full roster of activities planned for the month (and beyond) and many ways for people to get involved, including a Live Your Best Life with Parkinson’s Disease seminar on April 24 at St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson (to RSVP call 631-474-6797), and also many Parkinson’s support groups, programs such as the Loud & Lyrical vocal group (to register call 631-862-3560), and more.

Throughout April, APDA will also be sharing messages of inspiration and information on all APDA social media channels using

#APDAconnects.

In New York alone, more than 65,000 people over the age of 60 are diagnosed and living with PD. Now more than ever, it is critical to support, engage and inform the PD community and raise awareness about this disease, and Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month is a great time to shine a spotlight on this issue.

“Every six minutes there is a new diagnosis of PD, which means that in April alone nearly 7,200 people in this country will learn they have PD. These people need to know that they are not alone, and that APDA is here for them” states Julie Garofalo, RN, Coordinator of APDA’s Suffolk County Information & Referral Center. “Here in on Long Island we are the boots on the ground – from support groups and exercise

classes to educational seminars and financial support programs – APDA can help connect you to so many people and resources that can make your PD experience more positive” Garofalo continues.

Beyond New York, APDA offers extensive virtual programming to make sure that no matter where you live, you have access to high-quality PD information and programs and feel connected to the PD community even from afar. From the popular Dr. Gilbert Hosts webinar series and the ongoing Spanish-language Café con la doctora program, to the robust calendar of virtual exercise and movement classes – there is something for everyone.

The support of the general public is crucial, and April is the perfect time to take action and help the more than one

million people in the United States coping with this chronic neurological movement disorder. Whether you help by raising awareness of PD or by making a donation that enables APDA to continue their critical work and fund research that will lead us to better treatments and ultimately, a cure; every effort makes a difference.

For more information about APDA programs, services, and support on Long Island, contact the APDA Suffolk County Information & Referral Center at 631-862-3560 or Julie.garofalo@chsli.org.

Helping You Help Others

The Charity of the Month for April is Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together

Long Island (RTLI) is a nonprofit organization, headquartered in Farmingdale, serving Nassau County and most of Su olk County. As an a liate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together, their mission is repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.

To accomplish their vision of safe and healthy homes for everyone, they provide free essential home safety repairs and modifications for economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, whether they are older adults, veterans, families or persons with a disability or limited mobility.

The beneficiaries of RTLI’s work, lowincome homeowners struggling to get by, are so appreciative of the repairs and modifications that this organization does to keep them safe and improve their quality of life. “I was desperate,” said a widow of a Navy veteran who welcomed RTLI’s helping hand. “Now I have so much less stress and a more comfortable and safer house.”

Autism And Children

According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed

four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of

autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

to those who need a helping hand.”

The volunteer teams work tirelessly to help our neighbors, traveling throughout Long Island, using their own cars and tools. They come from all walks of life and professions, from teachers to principals, business owners, social workers, administrative assistants, accountants and truck drivers. The list goes on and on, but they all have one thing in common; their commitment to do the right thing, give back, lend a hand and be there for someone in need.

Here are ways you can get involved:

•If you know someone who may benefit from their services, have them call the RTLI o ce at 631.777.7894, Monday – Friday, to see if they qualify for the free program.

www.rebuildingtogether.org CHILLI 9 month old male. White and ginger Tabby. Handsome boy.

•Join the RTLI team! Volunteers can sign up at rebuildingtogetherli.org/ volunteer-today. Currently they are looking for individuals who are fluent in Spanish and for an o ce person, particularly if they are familiar with Salesforce. Additionally, if you are handy with tools, the Nassau and Su olk crew teams are always looking for more help.

Neighbor Pets’ Place

Another recent client said, “Thank you for treating my home like it was yours. You all showed professionalism, caring and impeccable workmanship. You made my home more livable and safer. You are doing a beautiful thing and should be very proud.” These words lift the spirits of the hardworking RTLI volunteers.

Their small o ce in Farmingdale has only one employee, so their volunteers are really a significant part of what they do. “Our volunteers are the heart and soul of our organization,” said Stella Hendrickson, President of RTLI. “Almost all are retired. They give their time, their talents, their expertise and their hearts

•Donate at rebuildingtogetherli. org. RTLI relies on the donations of our neighbors, some grants and corporate sponsorships, as they do not receive any government funding.

•RTLI encourages local business to get involved and sponsor a project. The organization can find the right project for your business to sponsor and you can then promote your generosity on social media to show your commitment to improving the health and safety of someone in need locally.

When we work together, we can bring about transformational change quickly in our communities.

Members of the East Meadow School District decorated puzzle pieces, infinity symbols and wore different shades of blue in recognition of Autism Awareness Month. The puzzle pattern

reflects the complexity of the autism spectrum while the rainbowcolored infinity symbol indicates that neurological differences are a natural occurrence. Blue is associated with a calm

feeling and represents acceptance for people on the spectrum. Students in the district will continue to recognize Autism Awareness Month through a variety of activities.

Community Members in Massapequa who belong to Massapequa Fit Body Boot Camp along with Owner and Coaches came together and started a Cycle for survival team to raise awareness and money to beat rare cancers.

“Massapequa Fit Body Boot Camp Cyclepaths!”

About Cycle for Survival: About 50% of people with cancer have a rare cancer. Rare cancers include brain, pancreatic, ovarian, stomach, all types of pediatric cancers, sarcomas and many more.

Even though they account for about half of all cancer diagnoses when combined, research on many rare cancers is drastically underfunded, often leaving patients with limited or no treatment options.

Cycle for Survival was started in 2007 by Jennifer

Community Raises Money For Rare Cancers

Goodman Linn and her husband, Dave Linn.

Jen was a Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) sarcoma patient and Equinox member.

She was diagnosed with soft tissue sarcoma in 2004, at age 32 and 1year after getting married.

After undergoing treatment at MSKCC, Jen founded Cycle for Survival in 2007 (then called Spin4Survival) as a way to give back to the doctors who treated her at MSKCC.

The first event was held in the cycling studio at Equinox Columbus Circle and brought together family, friends, and colleagues who rode and raised $250,000 for MSKCC.

In that moment, Jen sparked what has now become a national movement partnered by

MSKCC and Equinox.

Equinox is the founding partner of Cycle for Survival. Equinox’s unwavering support has helped the events grow exponentially, from one cycling studio in New York City to large events across the country. Its world-renowned cycling instructors lead each ride, and Equinox’s leadership and staff dedicate significant time and resources to raise awareness and funds.

Throughout her sevenyear battle with cancer, Jen was unwavering in her commitment to raise money and help people facing rare cancers like hers, making a better future possible through more research, clinical trials, and ultimately, lifesaving treatments — bringing hope to patients and families worldwide.

Together Jen and Dave

ignited The Cycle for Survival fundraising movement — and Jen’s legacy lives on.

Despite losing Jen in 2011, we continue to be inspired by her fearless determination and passion to beat rare cancers and ensure better outcomes for everyone.

Cycle for Survival is now an annual fundraiser that occurs throughout the Nation from March through May. 100% of every dollar supports pioneering research and lifesaving clinical trials at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK).

People Ride together on stationary bikes in 13 cities across the United States. All rides are four-hour relaystyle events. You can build your own team, join an existing one, or participate individually.

This year the event on Long Island is May 6th, with 2 sessions, at Equinox on 7550 Jericho Turnpike, Woodbury, NY.

Massapequa Fit Body Boot Camp Members, Friends, Families with Massapequa Fit Body Boot Camp Owner, Coach Kwang, and the camp’s Staff Coaches came together and started a team and are riding the afternoon session. Please consider donating to our team.

United States Air Force Thunderbirds To Headline 19th Annual Bethpage Air Show At Jones Beach Taking Place May 27-28, 2023

Bethpage Federal Credit Union, New York State’s largest credit union, and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, are pleased to announce that the United States Air Force Thunderbirds will headline the 19th Annual Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach taking place on Saturday,

May 27, 2023 and Sunday, May 28, 2023. This will be the demonstration team’s 9th performance at the Bethpage Air Show.

It was announced at the annual International Council of Air Shows (ICAS) Convention yesterday that the United States Army Golden Knights Parachute Team and the

United States Marine Corps F35B Lighting II will be performing, along with the world famous Skytpers, Long Island’s David Windmiller and Mike Goulian, North America’s most decorated aerobatic pilot.

“Last year, we were very grateful that the Thunderbirds changed

their schedule to perform for us on Memorial Day, after the Saturday and Sunday weekend shows were rained out,” said George Gorman, Regional Director, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. “Suffice to say, we couldn’t be happier to welcome the team back to Long Island

for our 2023 show!”

“The Bethpage Air Show continues to be one of New York’s most treasured events,” said Linda Armyn, Chief Strategy & Marketing Officer, Bethpage Federal Credit Union. “After 19 years, the pilots and performers, show organizers and fans have grown to become a

big family. We look forward to organizing a very special show for our fans this year.”

It was also announced that the United States Navy Blue Angels will return as headliners for the special 20th Anniversary Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach, which will take place on Saturday, May 25, 2024 and Sunday, May 26, 2024.

Kennedy Charity Chapter Donates Prom

After a successful donation drive, the Bellmore-Merrick’s John F. Kennedy High School chapter of Becca’s Closet was able to distribute more than 60 prom dresses to Long Island students in need.

Becca was a high school student in Florida who organized prom dress drives for two years before passing away in an automobile accident. Becca’s Closet chapters are now active in several states.

Junior Ava Mogelefsky, who serves as the chapter’s president, said they have collected more than 300

Dresses

the 2022-23 school year.

“I did this by reaching out to the Bellmore-Merrick communities by posting on various Facebook pages and letting people know I’d even pick up the dresses,” she explained. “I was then able to put together a committee of passionate teens to help sort and organize dresses as they came in and we will help style students as they make their dress choices.”

She utilized social media, local social services resources and guidance department advisers to help connect students in need of formal wear for upcoming dances or other

“Prom is a time in a teen’s life that ends one chapter and is the most exciting start of a new chapter in life,” Mogelefsky said. “I would like every young person entering that new chapter to feel beautiful and be filled with confidence no matter their body type, style or economic needs.”

Mogelefsky, who is a student in the School and Community Leadership program, used this effort as part of her leadership project.

Interested individuals can contact the Kennedy main office at 516-9921400.

As the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) gets ready to kick off its Spring Season in our 10 leagues from Long Island to the Canadian border, the growth of our programs has created a need for additional referees and assistant refs. There are many wonderful things that happen when a person starts to ref including earning money, having the best view of the action, learning to manage people, learning more about the game, staying or becoming fit, expanding yourself by leaving your comfort zone as well as meeting the greatest people on soccer fields, including your new officiating colleagues. Becoming a youth soccer ref could be one of the best decisions you ever make!

Eastern New York is seeking new referees to be in the middle and/or on the line as assistant referees in youth soccer games. The minimum age is 14 years old to become certified. Classes are happening throughout the state and they consist of an online learning process wrapped up by a field session. For more info about certification near you, please contact State Youth Referee Administrator Cheryl Aronson at syra@ enysreferee.org and she will let you know how to get started.

With approximately 100,000 youth soccer players––both boys and girls––and more than 25,000 volunteers, the non-profit Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) stretches from Montauk Point, Long Island to the Canadian border. Members are affiliated with 10

leagues throughout the association, which covers the entire state of New York east of Route 81. ENYYSA exists to promote and enhance the game of soccer for children and teenagers between the ages of 5 and 19 years old, and to encourage the healthy development of youth players, coaches, referees and administrators. All levels of soccer are offered––from intramural, travel team and premier players as well as Children With Special Needs. No child who wants to play soccer is turned away. ENYYSA is a proud member of the United States Soccer Federation and United States Youth Soccer. For more information, please log on to http://www. enysoccer.com/

Fifth Graders Embrace A Kind And Caring Mindset

Kindness has been a focal point in fifth grade classrooms at John G. Dinkelmeyer Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District. Students have been exploring ways to spread goodwill in their school, their community and throughout

the world.

It started with watching a video that featured people doing kind deeds for others, and how that kindness could be contagious. Then, students from Melissa Halaris’ and Jeanne Patterson’s classes came together and worked

in small groups to identify specific kind acts they could do.

For the last part of the project, students wrote Haiku poetry. The three-line poems were concise but powerful, summing up kindness in a total of 17 syllables.
