Contractors For Kids (CFK) is a non-profit organization, which was founded for the purpose of providing assistance to families in Long Island communities. Their goal is to assist children and their families overcome obstacles that have unfortunately changed or have impacted their lives through the sickness, injury or death of a child.

They are committed to this cause and want to give hope and reassurance for the futures of Long Islanders.

CFK was founded in 2005 by Kevin Harney and Alan Nahmias of Stalco Construction. Kevin and Alan, both long-time philanthropists, saw the growing need for financial assistance in our communities and knew that something more needed to be done.

Through random acts of kindness, they were slowly changing the lives of others, however they thirsted to make more change so they decided to form this non-profit, Contractors For Kids.

Their organization runs on donations only and is volunteer based, they have no employees. One family at a time, they make sure that the financial hardship brought on by sickness, injury or death does not destroy an already hurting family. Whether it is to pay a phone bill or a mortgage payment, they want to be there to help.

Since 2005, CFK has given out more than 3 MILLION DOLLARS to help local Long Islanders. Here are some of the areas they’ve helped others financially: Rent, Mortgage Payments, Oil Deliveries, Utility Bills, Food, Transportation To & From Hospitals, Co-Payments, Medications & Funeral Expenses.

Contractors For Kids is local to the core. They know our Island well and they love to help locals. Their office is located in Holbrook and they have no plans of going anywhere. The

pandemic took its toll on CFK, as it did on many, but they stayed afloat and are thankful for the opportunity to continue to make a difference.

Recently, CFK helped a 12 year old boy who suffered from a traumatic brain injury. He is now blind and he has a history of Wilm’s tumor and craniotomy, among many other complications. This little boy was put into the foster system and was adopted by the nurse that fostered him. CFK was able to provide them with a special chair to hold him, car payments and rent!

Additionally, they assisted a 6 year old girl with Fibromatosis soft tissue sarcoma who lives in Holbrook. Due to intensive Chemo treatments, her mom had to stay home with her. CFK helped with several month’s mortgage payments, water and electric bills, as well as car payments to help keep this family afloat during difficult times!

So how do you qualify to get help? It’s quite simple. If you can prove that you are struggling financially because of the sickness, injury or death of a child, you live on Long Island (in Nassau or Suffolk County), and you have filled out their Application For Assistance, they will get in touch with you to see how they can be of help!

Want to help make a difference? You can do so by learning their mission, spreading awareness, referring families to CFK, distributing handouts/electronic materials and representing CFK at health fairs, open enrollment or employee meetings.

SPECIAL AUTOMOBILE ISSUE How To Get A Wi-Fi Enabled Car Staying connected is more important than ever, whether you’re at home or on the go.

Connecting to Wi-Fi is typically easy at home, but what about when you’re in the car?

Wi-Fi-enabled vehicles are becoming hot commodities for drivers.

There are various ways to access the internet in a car. Drivers can buy an add-on device.

Even mobile gadgets that aren’t specifically designed for vehicle applications can be easily connected. The devices plug into the 12-volt accessory outlet. OBD II devices connect to a car’s OBD II port. This is most often located below the steering wheel.

Mechanics use this port to run digital vehicle diagnostics. However, it also can be used to create a Wi-Fi hot spot with an OBD device.

Another option is to use a smartphone to create a mobile hotspot through a cellular data plan. Anyone in the car can then tether their phones or other devices to the smartphone to access the internet.

Many vehicles are now equipped with their own

Wi-Fi capabilities. This means you will not need an extra device to access the internet. However, you will probably need to sign up for an additional data plan through whatever service the car manufacturer uses to offer Wi-Fi capability or through your mobile phone carrier.

AllConnect. com says Wi-Fi plans for vehicles start as low as $10 per month and may include unlimited data. Furthermore, car Wi-Fi is often different from a mobile hotspot because it is likely to offer better connection and more security while preserving mobile

data and phone battery life. Cars that are not equipped with Wi-Fi can have it as an add-on with an installed wireless vehicle router. These routers range from $200 to $600 and are professionally installed.

Having Wi-Fi in a vehicle is handy when taking road trips or when work requires internet connectivity. Dedicated vehicle internet can help save on mobile phone data plans and battery life. Plus, people increasingly staying at home can rely on a vehicle’s Wi-Fi system as a back-up should their home internet go down.

The Benefits Of Wearing Seat Belts The importance of wearing seat belts in vehicles has resonated with drivers and passengers across the globe. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the national seat belt use rate in passenger vehicles in 2019 was 90.7 percent. And despite their simplicity, particularly when compared to

the various other technologies available in modern vehicles, seat belts remain an incredibly effective device against injury and even death, though only when drivers and their passengers remember to engage them. For example, the NHTSA notes that seat belts saved an estimated 14,955 lives in 2017 alone.

Unfortunately,

the NHTSA also reports that 47 percent of the 37,133 people killed in motor vehicle crashes in 2017 were not wearing seat belts. Studies have indicated that front seat riders in cars who wear their seat belts can reduce their risk of fatal injury by 45 percent, while front seat riders in trucks can reduce their risk for fatal injury by 60 percent.

TERMS OF SALE Such tax liens shall be sold subject to any and all superior tax liens of sovereignties and other municipalities and to all claims of record which the County may have thereon and subject to the provisions of the Federal and State Soldier’s and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts.

However, such tax liens shall have priority over the County’s Differential Interest Lien, representing the excess, if any, of the interest and penalty borne at the maximum rate over the interest and penalty borne at the rate at which the lien is purchased.

The Purchaser acknowledges that the tax lien(s) sold pursuant to these Terms of Sale may be subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or may become subject to such proceedings which may be commenced during the period in which a lien is held by a successful bidder or the assignee of same, which may modify a Purchaser’s rights with respect to the lien(s) the property securing same. Such bankruptcy proceedings shall not affect the validity of the tax lien. In addition to being subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or the Federal and State Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts, said purchaser’s right of foreclosure may be affected by the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery and Enforcement Act (FIRREA), 12 U.S.C. ss 1811 et. seq., with regard to real property under Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) receivership.

The County Treasurer reserves the right, without further notice and at any time, to withdraw from sale any of the parcels of land or premises herein listed.

The rate of interest and penalty which any person purchases the tax lien shall be established by his bid. Each purchaser, immediately after the sale thereof, shall pay to the County Treasurer ten per cent of the amount from which the tax liens have been sold and the remaining ninety per cent within thirty days after such sale. If the purchaser at the tax sale shall fail to pay

the remaining ninety per cent within ten days after he has been notified by the County Treasurer that the certificates of sale are ready for delivery, then all deposited with the County Treasurer including but not limited to the ten per cent theretofore paid by him shall, without further notice or demand, be irrevocably forfeited by the purchaser and shall be retained by the County Treasurer as liquidated damages and the agreement to purchase be of no further effect.

Time is of the essence in this sale. This sale is held pursuant to the Nassau County Administrative Code and interested parties are referred to such Code for additional information as to terms of sale, rights of purchasers, maximum rates of interest and other legal incidents of the sale.

Furthermore, as to the bidding, 1. The bidder(s) agree that they will not work with any other bidder(s) to increase, maintain or stabilize interest rates or collaborate with any other bidder(s) to gain an unfair competitive advantage in the random number generator in the event of a tie bid(s) on a tax certificate. Bidder(s) further agree not to employ any bidding strategy designed to create an unfair competitive advantage in the tiebreaking process in the upcoming tax sale nor work with any other bidder(s) to engage in any bidding strategy that will result in a rotational award of tax certificates.

2. The tax certificate(s) the Bidder will bid upon, and the interest rate(s) bid, will be arrived at independently and without direct or indirect consultation, communication or agreement with any other bidder and that the tax certificate(s) the Bidder will bid upon, and the interest rate(s) to be bid, have not been disclosed, directly or indirectly, to any other bidder, and will not be disclosed, directly or indirectly, to any other bidder prior to the close of bidding. No attempt has been made or will be made to, directly or indirectly, induce any other bidder to refrain from bidding on any tax certificate, to submit complementary bids, or to submit bids at specific interest rates.

3. The bids to be placed by the Bidder will be made in good faith and not pursuant to any direct or indirect, agreement or discussion with, or inducement from, any other bidder to submit a complementary or other noncompetitive bid.

4. If it is determined that the bidder(s) have violated any of these bid requirements then their bid shall be voided and if they were the successful bidder the lien and any deposits made, in connection with, said bid shall be forfeited.

Life’s WORC Seeking Sponsors for Geraldo Rivera Golf Classic Life’s WORC (www. lifesworc.org), a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism through its residential, community and trust services, is seeking sponsors to support its upcoming 33rd Annual Geraldo Rivera Golf Classic. The event will be held on May 17, 2021, from 10:30 AM to 8:30 PM at the Old Westbury Golf and Country Club, 270 Wheatley Road, Westbury.

There are multiple levels of sponsorships for the event

which will honor Peter J. Klein, CFA, CRPS, CAP, Chief Investment Officer and Founder of ALINE Wealth and E. Christopher Murray, Esq., Partner with the law firm of Ruskin Moscou Faltischek, PC. Proceeds from the event will go directly to support children and adults with intellectual challenges, developmental disabilities and autism throughout Long Island, Queens, and Manhattan.

The corporate sponsorships include: Tournament Underwriter for $25,000, which entitles

the sponsor to 16 players and 26 dinner reservations with reserved seating, prominent recognition throughout the tournament and dinner, as well as in the event program, digital promotion and a press release. The tournament underwriter will also have their name/ logo featured on three tee signs. There also is a Mission Sponsorship for $15,000 entitling the sponsor to 12 players and 22 dinner reservations with reserved seating, prominent recognition throughout the event and

in related marketing, and their name/logo on three tee signs. A Community Sponsorship for $10,000 entitles the sponsor to 8 players and 16 dinner reservations with reserved seating, logo recognition on golf carts and their name/logo on two tee signs.

Other sponsorship opportunities include a Program Sponsor for $7,500 (4 players and 8 dinner reservations with reserved seating, logo recognition as program sponsor, name/logo on two tee signs), Family Sponsor for $5,000 (4 players and

dinner reservations with reserved seating, logo recognition on give-away package, recognition in event program and digital promotion and name/ logo on two tee signs), Benefactor Golf Team sponsorship for $3,500 (4 players and dinner reservations with reserved seating and name/logo on one tee sign), Best Friend sponsorship for $2,500 (2 players and dinner reservations with reserved seating, recognition in the event program and digital promotion and name/ logo on one tee sign) and

Friend for $2,000 (2 dinner reservations with reserved seating and recognition in event program and digital promotion). A $1,000 donation in support of Life’s WORC and its golf classic entitles the contributor to a permanent dedicated Puzzle Piece at the Life’s WORC Family Center for Autism.

While it might seem hard to believe, as of 2019 there are still some places in the United States where auto insurance is not mandatory. People know to protect their skin and eyes from the sun. Sun exposure can be dangerous for the body, but the sun’s rays also can damage automobiles.

Leaving a vehicle exposed to sunlight for extended periods of time increases the risk of damage to its interior and exterior. It’s important that car and truck owners recognize this so they can mitigate the potential problems sun and heat may cause.

Testing conducted at the State Farm® Vehicle Research Facility found interior vehicle air temperatures have been recorded well in excess of 145 F. Interior surfaces exposed to direct sunlight have been recorded at temperatures in excess of 195 F.

For the second consecutive year, Wantagh Middle School students paused on March 26 to imagine a world without hate during No Place for Hate Day. Throughout the school day, students participated in contentbased activities where they ruminated and discussed tolerance, acceptance and kindness toward others in school and the global community. This year’s theme highlighted the importance of equity in religion, gender, race and culture and the qualities of being fair and impartial.

“I wanted to help empower young girls and teach them that they can use their voices to speak out about things that are important to them through media,” said Kenney.

She conducted a survey which garnered more than 100 anonymous responses from girls regarding media and female representation.

She learned that most people, 72%, regardless of

age or race, felt that there is not enough diversity in the media. Kenney then created a Google Classroom for young girls to access which served as a hub for her program.

She conducted Low Down sessions over Google Meet where she spoke with girls virtually about females in the media and the importance representing female voices. In addition, Kenney educated the girls on various types of media, taught them how to produce their own segment and provided professional tips and tricks. She also helped them practice their public speaking skills and more to help build their self-confidence.

The Google Classroom page holds three lesson plans with the necessary resources that Kenney created to allow anyone to recreate the Low Down sessions with their own groups. She hopes that her Low Down program inspires girls to find their own voices and explore a future in media.

The Levittown Public Schools commends Kenney for her dedication and for receiving her welldeserved Girl Scout Gold Award.

Nicolette Kenney, a senior from Division Avenue High School in the Levittown Public Schools, recently earned her Girl Scout Gold Award after working diligently for more than a year on a passion project of hers.

The Gold Award is the highest achievement that a Girl Scout can receive.

Recipients tackle issues that they are passionate about and work towards enacting a change in their communities and beyond.

Kenney has been a Girl Scout since the first grade and found her inspiration for her Gold Award project through Girl Scout founder Juliette Gordon Low and Kenney’s own passion for media. Her love for broadcasting sparked after joining Division Avenue High School’s broadcasting club during her freshman year. Kenney soon decided to join a sports journalism and broadcasting certification program at Hofstra University and discovered that females were underrepresented in the media industry. She wanted to change this.

Kenney created a program called “The Low Down,” a play on Girl Scout founder Mrs. Low’s name, for her Gold Award Project.

Vehicle Maintenance Tasks Drivers Don’t Want To Overlook

Why Is Tire Rotation So Important?

Savvy drivers recognize that maintenance is essential to keeping their vehicles running strong for years on end.

Such maintenance ensures vehicles are safe to take out on the road, and basic upkeep also protects drivers’ financial investments in their cars and trucks.

Drivers who are not mechanically inclined tend to put their vehicles in the hands of a trusted mechanic to perform routine maintenance like oil changes, but there’s a host of simpler vehicle maintenance tasks that drivers don’t want to overlook, some of which can be performed without visiting the auto body shop.

• Brake inspections: Brake inspections are best left to the professionals, who can check the thickness of brake pads and look for other indicators of excessive wear. The automotive resource Cars. com recommends having brakes inspected during

routine tire rotations, which many automotive professionals suggest should be done every six months.

• Car wash: Car washes might not be the first task drivers associate with vehicle maintenance, but they can prevent longterm damage to cars and trucks. Damage from bird droppings and road salt and ice melt products in the winter can damage a vehicle’s paint job and its undercarriage. Wash the car on your own at home or visit a professional car wash to perform this simple yet vital maintenance at regular intervals and whenever you notice significant buildup of dirt and grime on the car’s exterior.

• Air filter: The air filter on a car or truck prevents debris, dirt and other contaminants from getting into the engine.

The auto insurance experts at Allstate® advise drivers to inspect their vehicle air filters once a year. Air filters

in need of replacement may appear dirty, and reduced fuel economy, unusual engine sounds and reduced horsepower are some other potential indicators that an air filters needs to be replaced.

• Windshield wipers: Windshield wiper blades are easily overlooked, but various automotive experts recommend replacing wiper blades every six to 12 months.

Old wiper blades won’t perform at peak capacity, dramatically reducing visibility during heavy rain and snowstorms. Anyone can replace their own windshield wiper blades in a matter of minutes, and new blades won’t break the bank.

Vehicle maintenance is not exclusive to tending to what’s under the hood.

Keeping a car running smoothly for years involves routine tasks that many drivers can perform without professional assistance.

Vehicle owners need to keep maintenance on the mind to ensure their cars and trucks are operating at peak capacity. Various components should be checked and serviced at key intervals. Oil changes and fluid topoffs are part of routine maintenance, but it can be easy to forget about other important parts of the vehicle, including tires.

Rotating tires is vital to their upkeep.

Bridgestone Tires advises that tire rotation involves routinely repositioning a vehicle’s tires in specific patterns from front to back and side to side.

According to Big O Tires, the front tires tend to wear on the outside edges because the tire leans over when a driver turns a corner. The rear tires just follow the front ones, so they usually wear more evenly. By leaving tires in place, the outside edges on the front tires will wear

down much faster than the rest and those tires will need to be replaced sooner. Rotation may be required by tire warranties. Rotation also keeps the tires working properly.

Experts generally advise tire rotation every 6,000 to 8,000 miles, even if they do not show any signs of wear. It is challenging to determine if weather treads are uneven or how much wear has been sustained just by looking at them. Rotating tires can prolong the life of tires and decrease how frequently they need to be replaced.

Rotating tires keeps the tread depth uniform and helps maintain traction and consistent handling across all four tires.

Bridgestone says the tire rotation pattern that is best for a particular vehicle depends on the type of tire being used. Patterns are recommended by the standardizing body of the tire industry, called The Tire and Rim Association,

Inc. Individuals can consult with professional mechanics about the proper way to rotate tires.

Many tire manufacturers or automotive stores that have sold customers tires also will do tire rotations — some free of charge.

In addition to proper traction, minimizing uneven tire treads causes the vehicle to be more balanced, advises Wrench, a mobile auto repair and maintenance company.

This enables the driver to have more control even when roads are slippery.

Many auto service centers will then align and balance tires after they have been rotated. At this time the mechanic will likely check brakes as well, since it is easy to see and reach them when the tires are off.

Tire rotation is an important component of vehicle maintenance.

Helen Keller Services Hosts Virtual 5k Fundraiser Helen Keller Services (HKS), a 501 (C)(3) nonprofit offering programs and services through its two divisions: Helen Keller National Center for Deaf-Blind Youths and Adults (HKNC) and Helen Keller Services for the Blind (HKSB), today announced it will host its Second Annual Helen’s 5K Run. Walk. Ride. Virtual Fundraiser online from April 24 to May 9, 2021.

Participants can register to run/walk/ride, and/or

assist with fundraising by creating their own personal Individual or Team Helen’s Run.Walk.

“While we cannot be together in person this year, we invite you to join us virtually to be a part of this year’s fundraising campaign,” said Sue Ruzenski, CEO of HKS. “Whether it is indoors or outside in the fresh air while running,

Last year was the first year HKS could not have an in-person event in over 30 years.

Nonetheless, the event was a big success, which included participants from Maine to Hawaii. This year the event seeks to raise $30,000 and to reach an even broader audience.

Proceeds from this year’s fundraising campaign

will enable HKS to assist individuals who are blind, visually impaired or have a combined hearing and vision loss to receive equal access to opportunity. The 5k Run. Walk. Ride. seeks to Break Down Barriers to Independence, Build a More Inclusive Society and Bring Inner Capability Out. Participants register online and then record their runs with a timer or smartphone app such as Strava. After the run,

participants update their time on the website for credit. In addition to raising funds for HKS, participants can compete to win a variety of prizes, including TD Bank and Nike gift cards in amounts ranging from $500 to $100.
