In a continued effort to keep America’s largest township safe, Hempstead Town Council members are pleased to announce the Town of Hempstead will again partner with local civil defense auxiliary police units, including 22 unincorporated and incorporated communities in Hempstead Town.

Majority Leader Erin King Sweeney, Sr. Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby, Councilman Bruce Blakeman, Councilman Anthony D’Esposito and Councilman Dennis Dunne approved a resolution for the partnership at the Town Board meeting, held on April 2nd.

The town increased funding by $1,000 to each unit in unincorporated areas for recruitment, training and equipment, including Baldwin, Bellmore, East Meadow, Elmont, Five Towns, Lakeview, Levittown, Merrick, North Bellmore, Oceanside, Point Lookout, Roosevelt, Seaford, South Hempstead, Uniondale, Wantagh and West Hempstead. The town increased funding by $500 to each unit in incorporated areas for recruitment, training and equipment; including East Rockaway, Lynbrook, Rockville Centre, Stewart Manor and Valley Stream.

Recognizing Your Life Cycles year you found out you were going to be a parent for the first time. I could list a hundred more examples. Who knew as the clock struck 12 midnight on New Year’s Day of that year, that those life changing events would be coming your way.

Life holds so many mysteries for us to unfold; sometimes pleasant and sometimes not so pleasant. What I have come to know is that no matter what you are going through, there are always goodies waiting around a new corner. I can honestly say, I have never gone through a personal trial without something magical coming out of it; a special person, a new opportunity, an important revelation. I have also come to know that life looks most messy before things fall into place. At that point, all you can say is, “Wow!,” and “Thank you.”

We go through cycles of rest, growth and then reaping rewards.

We know we are in a cycle of rest when life seems status quo, the needle doesn’t move very much and we are just going about our business with no significant

ripples. Life seems fairly effortless and predictable in this cycle. It may even seem a bit boring at times, and you long for a little spice.

We know we are in a growth cycle when hard times come, life feels chaotic and overwhelming, we “just can’t seem to catch a break,” and we experience heavy and painful emotions. It is in our growth cycles where we do the most significant work and our soul achieves further expansion.

This expansion prepares us for our next reward cycle. When we pass the tests we are given during our growth cycles, we will then (often, when we least expect it) come into a new reward cycle.

A reward cycle is recognizable to us because this is when we experience the goodies of life.

Someone special comes into our path, doors seem to open up, a dream comes true, and life starts to feel great again.

Suddenly, perspective is achieved. Any discomfort seems worth it, because it delivered us to a place of being able to receive the gift(s) we are now being given.

April’s Charity of the Month is: Operation S.P.L.A.S.H.

In honor of Earth Day, an annual event celebrated on April 22nd, which brings awareness about environmental conservation, I chose an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors.

Products used to wash boat hull sand decks often contain toxic ingredients such as chlorine, phosphates and ammonia.

Degreasers dry the natural oils fish need for their gills to take in oxygen. For boats that are in the water, use cleaning methods that prevent or contain the release of pollutants to surface waters.

Below are a few actions you can take: 1) When possible, remove the boat from the water and perform cleaning where debris can be captured and properly disposed.

2) Use fresh water to clean your boat after every use.

3) Use environmentally friendly cleaning methods and products.

Here are a list of a few alternatives to toxic products: Elbow Grease, Hydogen Peroxide, Baking Soda, Salt, Apple Cider Vinegar, Baby Oil.

This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, Ocean-Bay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more.

They have successfully rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters! Also, asside from collecting trash they also have had an amazing impact on the amount of sewage being dumped in our bays. To reduce the flow of trash into our bays, they have collaborated on the funding and installation of more than 4,000 street storm drain inserts in Nassau County.

Youth Wellness Summit

The Bellmore-Merrick CHSD partnered with the Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide to host a Nassau County Youth Wellness Summit at the Brookside building on March 19.

The Youth Wellness Summit was a day-long event included students from the BMCHSD, as well as other Nassau County public and private high schools.

“The collaboration of over 25 Nassau County schools, the partnership with SPTS and the lineup of speakers, presenters, panelists and workshops was truly awe-inspiring,” said Michael Harrington, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction and Long Island Wellness Summit Committee member.

The summit was designed to provide students, staff and administrators with the resources needed to support overall wellness, including the prevention of teen suicide and other upstream prevention

measures. It began with a powerful and interactive panel discussion presenting young people with inspiring stories of resiliency and hope, including a Mepham alumna, Stacy Brief who was integral in bringing the summit to Long Island.

“With mental health issues in America on the rise, the district is seeking positive and proactive ways to engage students in being part of the solution to what is becoming an epidemic amongst adolescents,” said Eric Arlin, director of special education and pupil personnel services.

Throughout the day, effective prevention and wellness techniques were presented on a variety of topics including coping skills, yoga, preparing for life after high school, removing toxic friendships, building selfconfidence and effective communication skills.

“One student said that she particularly loved an activity we did in the workshop Knowing Your

Worth, where students walked around with paper on their back and were asked to walk around the room an speak to students they didn’t know, and write a positive word to describe them on their backs,” explained Theana Cheliotes, LMSW at Mepham High School and Long Island Wellness Summit Committee member. “I call this first impressions. Many of the words that were written on this young lady’s paper were things she didn’t quite believe she possessed but perfect strangers were able to see these things in her. She continued to look at the paper with tears of joy in her eyes.”

SPTS has offered the Youth Wellness Summit in New Jersey since 2014, however, this is the first of its kind on Long Island.

“Our hope is that students and staff take the lessons and skills they learned today and become ambassadors in their own districts,” added Harrington.

DECA NYS Conference Members of Division Avenue High School’s DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) chapter in the Levittown Public Schools, competed at the DECA State Career Conference in Rochester from March 6-8.

Advised by Mark Engels, three of the 17 Division Avenue High School DECA members took home medals in their event categories. The students competed against 2,300 business students from across New York State.

DECA is an extracurricular activity

that helps prepare future leaders and entrepreneurs through role play competitions in business themed areas. Sophomore Nikhil Keer earned two medals for his role play scenarios and a medal for making top 10 in New York State for the category of Business Finance. Senior James Pizaro earned a medal for his Quick Serve Restaurant Management Role Play event and senior Jamal Zafar took home a medal for his role play scenario and a medal for making top 10 in New York State for the category

of Automotive Services Marketing.

The district congratulates the three students on their achievements and all the Division Avenue High School competitors on their hard work. This includes Michael Avner, Molly Botros, Jacquelyn Devaney, Ryan Dwyer, Alex Lunetta, Amanpreet Minhas, Pritpaul Minhas, Katherine Oswald, Ryan Powers, Brandon Smith, Ethan Sochinsky, Danielle Spiegel, Fern Surary and Sean Wolf.

making masks and baking king cakes.

Taking the Stage at Tilles Center Members of the East Meadow School District gathered on March 14 at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts, located on the campus of LIU Post, for the All-District Music Festival. This year, the festival featured the district’s choral students.

Syracuse University’s Dr. John F. Warren, professor of music and director of choral activities at

the university, served as conductor for the evening. The All-District A Capella Choir, the AllDistrict Sixth-Grade Choir, All-District High School Chorus and the East Meadow High School Chamber Orchestra all performed under the direction of Dr. Warren and joined together for a combined finale.

“Thank you to Dr.

Warren for working with our students,” said Director of Music and Art Dr. Christopher Hale. “I also want to thank our administration for their support, and the students for their dedication and success.”

The district congratulates all of these students for their musical achievements.

Bringing Families Together Around The World (NAPSI)—With all the sad stories of conflict and desperation from around the world, it can be heartening to hear of loved ones reunited.

Here are just two of the happy examples: • Lydia spent months wondering if her daughter Odette was alive. Conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo forced Lydia to seek asylum in the U.S., leaving her far away from her family and with a heavy heart. With the help of the Red Cross, Lydia located her daughter and sent her a message through the Restoring Family Links (RFL) program. Odette responded to her mom— she was indeed alive. “I don’t know how the Red Cross managed to connect me with someone who I thought was dead. There was no other way for me to talk to her. There was no

other way.”

• Conflict in Burundi forced Fidele to flee and lose touch with his loved ones, including his father.

After living in Tucson, Arizona, for some time, he connected with the Red Cross RFL program to open up a search for his father to help give him peace of mind. After months of searching, Fidele finally received the welcome message: His father was alive and well.

Shore Road School students in Bellmore helped defray tuition costs for an African child hoping to attend school in Mtwapa, Kenya. The generous students raised more than $155 for Reason 2 Smile, a nonprofit organization providing opportunities for children to attend the Jambo Jipya school and to live in the quarters of the accompanying children’s home. The students made and sold bracelets to peers and family members for their generous donation.

Matthews told the students that reaching out to the global community aligns with the important core values and leadership principles of the district’s Bellmore Stars Character Development program.

“There are children around the world that don’t have our luxuries or schools in their communities,” Ms. Matthews told the students. “We want to make a lasting footprint in the world.”

During an assembly earlier in the year, executive director Donna Rosenblum

gave a presentation to the student body about the school and life in Mtwapa, noting that annual tuition costs $250 per student for the 22 orphans that live there. She also showed the students photos of her trips to Jambo Jipya and of students who have graduated to become professionals due to the generosity of donors. Ms. Rosenblum also donated Patricia Newman’s “Neema’s Reason to Smile” to the school library.

What You Will Need 10 ripe tomatoes, chopped 3 English cucumbers, diced 1 large red onion, diced 1 yellow pepper, seeded and chopped 3 red peppers, seeded and chopped 4 tbs red wine vinegar 2 tbs of olive oil 1 clove garlic, minced ½ cup cilantro chopped 2 limes sliced 1 avocado diced

Salt and Pepper to taste Preparation 1.Place tomatoes, onion, bell peppers, Tabasco sauce and garlic in a food processor and process until smooth.

2. Place all of the cucumbers except ½ cup cucumbers into the blender and process until smooth.

3. Add vinegar and oil and quick process until mixed.

4. Place the mixture in a serving bowl, and stir thoroughly.

5. Cover and refrigerate for an hour or until serving time.

6. Remove from refrigerator and uncover.

7. Add salt and pepper to taste.

8. Place gazpacho into serving dishes.

9. Garnish with remaining cucumbers and cilantro and a piece of lime and 1 t. of avocado. Enjoy!

With the guidance of club adviser Melissa Lawrence, Castrillon and Zhang met on a weekly basis after school to prepare for the math fair.

Both students picked a mathematical topic that interested them. They then conducted researche, wrote a full paper, practiced their presenting skills and created a poster. Lawrence said she enjoyed seeing how the students worked together, offering feedback during presentation practice and helping boost their peer’s confidence.

Math Fair Club MacArthur High School math fair club members, freshman Ryan Castrillon and junior Zexaan “Clark” Zhang, showcased their research skills during the preliminary round of the Al Kalfus Long Island Math Fair on March 1, sponsored by the Nassau County Association of Mathematics Supervisors.

The students competed at Hofstra University against students from across Nassau County, with the hopes of receiving an invite back for the final round of the math fair.

Castrillon’s project, “Math in Sports,” focused on how math is utilized in baseball, basketball and football. He spotlighted the way math affects sports, ranging from statistical reasons to strategy.

Zhang’s project, “Riemann Hypothesis,” focused on the

“The best part about the club is that it gives you more opportunities,” said Zhang. “You get to represent the school which I like doing.”

MacArthur High School’s math fair club provides all students who have a passion for mathematics, the opportunity to compete and strengthen their research and presentation skills.

“The nice thing about the club is that it’s not for your highest achieving math students,” said Lawrence.

“It’s for anyone who has an interest researching something in math. The club gives anyone in the building the opportunity to be able to research something and present it to a panel of people.”

Making Music At Dinkelmeyer Third-graders recently started learning how to play recorders at John G. Dinkelmeyer Elementary School. As part of the North Bellmore School District’s music education program, students begin their instrumental musical instruction using these woodwind devices.

Working with music teacher Stephanie Messana, the budding musicians first learned how to hold the instrument and how to blow gently into it to create a beautiful sound.

From there, they played the notes B-A-G. Using what they knew about

reading music, student practiced the notes in different combinations to play their first song, “Big Gross Bugs.” A rock ‘n rollstyle backing track made the song sound even more impressive.

To enhance instruction, Ms. Messana uses an online resource, Recorder Monster, with interactive games, practice resources and song recordings.

Children can also access the program at home.

When students enter fourth grade, they can select an instrument to play in the band or orchestra, and learning the recorder helps prepare them for that experience. Playing

an instrument requires students to concentrate on many different elements at once including reading music to know what note to play, how long to play in and how loud or soft it should sound. They also must be able to coordinate their fingers with what they see written in the music.

“The recorder is an accessible instrument that is an excellent precursor to playing a band or orchestra instrument,” Ms. Messana said. “Playing an instrument encompasses all of the technical musical skills and combines it with the aesthetic aspect of music.”
