Charity Event Raises $67K For St.
Baldrick’s Foundation
The entire BellmoreMerrick school community came together March 22 for the districtwide annual Chop Your Locks for charity event benefiting the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, hosted by Wellington C. Mepham High School.
This year’s in-person event has already raised more than $67,000 for the foundation, which supports pediatric cancer research and outreach.
“We couldn’t be prouder of the efforts of our seniors in Participation in Government to coordinate this event and to inspire their classmates and community members to come together for such an incredible cause,” said event co-organizer and social studies teacher Kerry Dennis.
Together with teacher Chris Patten, and social studies chairperson Robyn Einbinder, members of the department oversaw various details of the evening’s success. Patten also played the bagpipes with the Amity Harbor Pipes Band.
Students in Jackie Geller’s Leadership classes also volunteered.
One of this year’s honorees included Geller’s daughter, Giuliana Geller, and another local youth, Gabrielle Brancacio. In district students Carsyn Volpe and Robert LaSpina of Grand Avenue Middle School along with sisters Kate O’Halloran and Kristen O’Halloran of John F. Kennedy High School were also honored.

Bjornsson was the evening’s top fundraiser, earning $4,300 for the foundation.
Cast members from Skull and Bones’ upcoming drama production, “Grease,” performed a dance number. The BellmoreMerrick Broadcasting team, under the direction of Stu Stein, Matthew Russell and Lisa Kalish, provided livestreaming of the event. Members of the Star Warsthemed cosplay group, the 501st Legion, were also on hand.
When it came time for the shaving shenanigans, students from the district’s cosmetology program, led by instructor Jaime Pendl, operated the hair buzzers. The program is housed at Sanford H. Calhoun High School.
BOWLING TEAM COMPLETES SEASON UNDEFEATED - The bowling team at Jonas E. Salk Middle School in the Levittown Public School District had a season to remember with a perfect undefeated record of 11-0. The team was anchored all season long by seventh graders Nico Buenaventura and Ben Greller and eighth grader Aayaan Ladha. Huge contributions were made throughout the season by eighth grader Spencer Sanoff-Weiner, who led all bowlers with a game high score of 185 against Uniondale. During the final match of the season – with the undefeated record on the line – seventh grader Binan Baer bowled a game high score of 180 against North Shore. High School Orchestra Students Begin Peer Tutoring Group
Orchestra students from three high schools in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District have been volunteering at a peer tutoring program.
Fifteen high schoolers work with orchestra students from Grand and Merrick Avenue middle schools twice weekly at each school.
The effort was organized by John F. Kennedy High School junior Fiona Yeung. While tutoring elementaryaged strings students via online instruction, Yeung said she observed challenges students faced during the pandemic.
“Many of our younger students in the community were becoming more disconnected from music,” she said. “Connecting with older students will give the young kids a valuable
sense and insight into their exciting musical journey.”
The goal is to prepare middle school students for the upcoming NYSSMA festival. NYSSMA is an annual event where students showcase and are evaluated on their solo or small ensemble performances.
Volunteers also include Julia Cohen, Kayleigh Reardon, Daniel Lin, Jeremy Wang and Jocelyn Yeung from Kennedy, Hannah Bickom from Wellington C. Mepham High School and Ian Klimov, Nalani Booker and Katherine Salvatore from Sanford H. Calhoun High School.
Yeung’s vision of helping young musicians has become a reality with the support of the district orchestra
directors, Emily Kenyon of Kennedy, Michael D’Addio of Grand Avenue and Kelly Friedmann of Mepham.
“This tutoring program is a wonderful example of what we constantly strive for in the BMCHSD music department; community, collaboration and enriching the community around us,” said Kenyon.
“We are so proud of Fiona and all of the students who are taking the initiative to give back to their community,” added Cheryl Fontana, the district’s director of fine and performing arts. “This truly embodies the One Voice, One Message spirit that the district believes in.” Interested students can reach out to their middle school orchestra teacher.

Nassau BOCES Announces Pilot Program With SUNY Empire State
Nassau BOCES is pleased to announce an exclusive pilot program with SUNY Empire State College. The pilot allows any student who successfully completes an asynchronous class through the Agency’s Online Learning Academy to gain automatic acceptance into SUNY Empire State College upon graduating high school.
Lynbrook UFSD student
Matthew LaVerda is the first recipient of this honor. He recently graduated from Lynbrook’s Owl Success Academy, which offers classes through the Online Learning Academy, and was recognized at a recent Board of Education meeting.
“We are extremely grateful for our partnership
with Nassau BOCES in providing an online learning environment for our students. We are thrilled to have one of Lynbrook’s students recognize the importance of obtaining a high school diploma and taking full advantage of this BOCES supported program. We are so very proud of him and the opportunities that now lie before him,”
said Dr. Melissa Burak, Superintendent, Lynbrook UFSD.
The Online Learning Academy enables school districts to provide a variety of courses that in-district faculty or facilities may not have available. It provides a remote learning option for Homebound or remote learners, enrollment in courses a district is not able
to provide, opportunities for students who may be unable to complete full days onsite, and remote credit recovery options for students needing to complete courses outside of the school environment or beyond the school day. Students can enroll in a single course or a full course schedule.
“We are already working
on programs to pave a solid pathway for student success once they are admitted to SUNY Empire State College,” said Elisa Maggi, Supervisor for Nassau BOCES’ Center for Online Learning. “We look forward to working with other New York State BOCES to eventually roll this program out across the State.”

Benefits Of Volunteering
Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness
Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received
surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health. The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings.
The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health. Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.

The Charity of the Month for April is Rebuilding Together Long Island
Rebuilding Together
Long Island (RTLI) is a nonprofit organization, headquartered in Farmingdale, serving Nassau County and most of Su olk County. As an a liate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together, their mission is repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.
To accomplish their vision of safe and healthy homes for everyone, they provide free essential home safety repairs and modifications for economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, whether they are older adults, veterans, families or persons with a disability or limited mobility.
Although RTLI’s teams work year round, April is a particularly important month because it is National Rebuilding Month. “Too many Americans su er from the health and economic consequences of living in substandard housing and under served communities,” said Caroline Blakely, President & CEO of Rebuilding Together. “National Rebuilding Month serves as an annual month-long call to service to encourage people to support their neighbors, strengthen their community and ensure everyone is living in safe and healthy homes.”
RTLI together with its 120 sister a liates will all look to surpass last year’s accomplishment of working with over 13,000 volunteers to repair close to 800 homes and over 150 community centers nationwide. As you drive around Long Island, watch for RTLI’s lawn signs. If you see one, you will know their volunteers are hard at work helping someone who needs a helping hand.
Once accepted into the program, each home receives a safety check of every room. Each home has its own challenges. RTLI also listens to the homeowner to determine their priorities. Hazards and unsafe conditions are noted and given to the volunteer crews so they can prepare a materials list and then
Neighbor Pets’ Place
get to work. Minor plumbing and electrical repairs may be made, but they may also do weatherization, flooring (if the current floor is a hazard), sheet rock repair and a myriad of other repairs. If someone has limited mobility, a wheelchair ramp may be constructed, grab bars and railings installed, doorways widened where possible to accommodate a wheelchair. Conversions of bathtubs to walk-in showers can also be done and under certain circumstances, a stair glide may be installed. While RTLI cannot always take care of every issue in the home, they will tell you that every home they work on is left safer than is was and the lives of its residents are improved when the project is complete! So how can you help?
•If you know someone who may benefit from their services, have them call the RTLI o ce at 631.777.7894, Monday – Friday, to see if they qualify for the free program.
•Join the RTLI team! Volunteers can sign up at rebuildingtogetherli.org/ volunteer-today. Currently they are looking for individuals who are fluent in Spanish and for an o ce person, particularly if they are familiar with Salesforce. Additionally, if you are handy with tools, the Nassau and Su olk crew teams are always looking for more help.
•Donate at rebuildingtogetherli. org. RTLI relies on the donations of our neighbors, some grants and corporate sponsorships, as they do not receive any government funding.
•RTLI encourages local business to get involved and sponsor a project. The organization can find the right project for your business to sponsor and you can then promote your generosity on social media to show your commitment to improving the health and safety of someone in need locally.
When we work together, we can bring about transformational change quickly in our communities. Stay tuned for next week’s article to learn more.

Town, Fire And Water Officials Denounce State Housing Plan That Threatens Long Island
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with his partners in Nassau County government, Supervisor
Jen DeSena of North Hempstead and Supervisor
Don Clavin of Hempstead, as well as Oyster Bay
Town Clerk Rich LaMarca and Receiver of Taxes Jeff Pravato, to demand that State lawmakers eliminate the State Housing Plan to flood suburbs and singlefamily home neighbors with thousands of new apartments. This latest proposal by Governor Hochul – seemingly a repeat of last year’s plan to turn suburban neighborhoods into overcrowded urban centers – would result in high density housing flooding every community, as well as spot zoning in which large scale apartment buildings could pop up next to single-family homes.
“We must save our
suburbs from this illconceived plan as it would overcrowd classrooms, greatly increase traffic and cars parked on our streets, strain emergency services and threaten the environment. We join together to protect our most precious resource –our water supply, which is under attack by this latest plan of overdevelopment,” said Supervisor Saladino.
“When it comes to the environment, the largest plume in any sole-source aquifer in the United States sits under our land in the Town of Oyster Bay. Over a billion dollars are already needed to clean up the plume, and even more is needed for our water districts to keep ensuring that our drinking water is safe at the tap. Over a billion dollars are also needed to upgrade our sewage and septic systems which are already near capacity, with
many seeping into the ground. Our only landfill in Brookhaven is on the verge of permanent closure, and a garbage crisis looms for the current population as waste will need to be trucked off Long Island and no solution exists. For
these reasons and a host of others, we demand that State lawmakers eliminate the Governor’s Housing Mandate.”
The three Town Supervisors joined local district officials to voice their concerns of how the
Governor’s urbanization plan would negatively impact the environment, traffic, parking, emergency services, police protection, local utilities and schools. They also asked the public to join them in contacting state officials to demand
that this proposal not move forward.
To help have their voices heard against this proposal, residents can visit www. oysterbaytown.com/sos and sign the petition telling state representatives their opposition to the plan.

A Look Into The Work Of Local Wantagh Artist, Francis Bonnet
By Natalie Almeida
Francis
Bonnet
is a local artist and a graduate from the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), where he earned a degree in Illustration. From a young age, Francis was always drawn to the world of cartoons. Growing up, he recalls a used bookstore around the corner from him, which he visited regularly to buy Peanuts, Garfield and Calvin and Hobbes books with the money he earned from his allowance.
These were some of his favorite comic strips and it was in those moments in which he knew that this was something he wanted to do. He soon began making his very own comics in grade school, which served as a foundation that helped him learn and improve upon since then. During his time at FIT, he developed his skills further in graphic design and painting, which helped his career tremendously.
In 2003, Francis first published
a comic called Crunchy, which ran both online and in print for two years. Afterwards, he began focusing his efforts on Suburban Fairy Tales. This comic series follows fairy tale characters in a modern, suburban Long Island setting. The series has evolved over the years and has since narrowed down its characters to primarily focus on The Three Little Pigs. Today, eight Suburban Fairy Tales books have been published and are available for purchase on Amazon.
A YEAR SPRING
The newest book, All’s Fair In Love and Wolves, was published this past September and it introduces a new character, Wolfette, who will become the love interest of one of The Three Little Pigs. The series has also been featured on GoComics, Kidjutsu, Raytoons Cartoon Avenue, Global Comix, Webtoon, and The Funnies.
Francis Bonnet also freelances for a variety of other comic series. He began working for Archie Comics Publications in
February 2015 and provides stories and cover ideas for various Archie Digests. Francis has also contributed to other comic strips such as Rhymes with Orange by Hilary Price and Frank and Ernest by Bob Thaves.

She is a consummate professional who possesses the skills and ability that are essential to excellence in student transportation. Everyone at Educational Bus Transportation joins me in congratulating Dawn as she begins her next chapter as Assistant Vice President of Operations.”
According to Corr, McGrath will report directly to Patti Royce-Moser, Vice President of Operations, helping to provide support, leadership, and direction to Educational Bus Transportation’s operating locations throughout Long Island. She will also help control the daily operation of all transportation contracts, in compliance with the policies of the contracting agencies and in

Liberty Conducting Annual Spring Flushing Of Water Mains
Flushing To Start In Merrick And South Merrick
On April 17th, And In North Bellmore On April 24th
Liberty is commencing its annual spring flushing program as part of its routine distribution system maintenance to help ensure quality water service to Liberty customers. Starting April 17, annual flushing will begin in Merrick and South Merrick, and in North Bellmore on April 24th. To learn more about when flushing is scheduled to occur in a specific neighborhood, residents are asked to visit https://new-yorkwater.libertyutilities.com/ all/residential/ and click ‘Spring Flushing Schedule’ in News and Events.
“Water main flushing is an important part of our operations and maintenance programs to remove harmless mineral and sediment buildup that can cause water to become discolored,” said Liberty Director of Operations, Brenda Wall. “Our flushing program positively impacts water quality while also ensuring all fire hydrants are operating properly, with the adequate flow needed in the event of an emergency.”
Water mains are flushed by opening fire hydrants in specific locations throughout each community to increase water flow to the area. While crews are performing flushing operations, residents may experience a temporary drop in water pressure and/or discolored water. If you experience discolored water, please allow the water to run in your faucet until it is once again clear, which shouldn’t be more than a minute or two.
In order for residents to better prepare for flushing in their neighborhood, Liberty asks that they consider the following tips and steps:
· Make note on your calendar of your community’s scheduled
flushing times.
· Prior to using the washing machine and dishwasher, check for discolored water.
· If discolored water stains your laundry, do not put it in the dryer. Rewash clothes right away with a heavy-duty detergent and add a rust remover.
· Draw water needed for cooking ahead of scheduled flushing time and set aside a large bottle of water in the refrigerator for drinking or future use.
· If water pressure or volume appears low after the flushing has finished, inspect the faucet screens for any trapped particles.
