Not even Mother Nature could deter the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District from once again hosting their One Voice, One Message 5K Run/Walk on March 24th.

Organized by Dr. Joseph Netto, the school psychologist at the Meadowbrook Alternative Program, and Robyn Einbinder, a social studies chairperson at Wellington C. Mepham High School, the event is in its fourth year.

“None of this could have been done without our Deputy Superintendent for Personnel, Dr. Mara Bollettieri, whose passion and dedication to the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District have helped make this wonderful event a reality and who continues to provide countless opportunities for our students,” Dr. Netto

said to the crowd ahead of the start of the race.

All proceeds will support GiveKindness, which is a social media platform founded by Mepham High School alumnae Nicole Madison and Larisa Madison that promotes kindness, positivity and respect in hopes of combating the effects of cyberbullying.

In addition, funds will also go toward the district’s Community Cupboard, a food pantry that currently assists more than 40 families.

“We can all make a difference,” said Legislator Steve Rhoads. “When you’re talking about GiveKindess or the Community Cupboard, these are all things that have been sponsored by students themselves or alumni from the BellmoreMerrick Central High

School District.

The important message is that each and every one of us have an obligation to make our corner of the world a little bit better.”

Overall winners were Mepham High School student Brendan Moehringer for the men and Theresa Ferraro for the women.

Several local vendors and businesses donated goods and services for the event: Panera Bread of Bellmore, Merrick Road Starbucks, Dover Caterers, Bellmore Town Bagel, Bagel Boss of Merrick, Bellmore Bagel Café, Trader Joe’s, Stop ‘N Shop, North Shore Farms, E. Armada Produce and Guardian Bus Company.

Additionally, the Nassau County Police Department and the Town of Hempstead secured the route.

A dedicated honor student who juggles a challenging AP workload, John F. Kennedy High School senior Jessica Rosen said she uses oil painting as a release.

Rosen’s painting “Tied Up” has been awarded a prestigious National Gold Medal in the 2018 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

Jessica received a Gold Key at the regional level prior to learning of this national accomplishment for both “Tied Up” and “Within the Shadow,” as well as two Silver Keys for her Art Portfolio, “What They Want Vs. Who I Am” and her painting,

excited by a new idea that she can not wait to start.”

Other students who placed in the competition include: Matthew Klein, Gold Key - Digital Art “Self – Portrait;” Madison Renck, Silver Key - Fashion - “Making Headlines” and Nina Weissbach, Silver Key - Photography – “Communication.”

Samantha Fried and Weissbach received honorable mention nods for their Drawing & Illustration submissions, “Red Glasses” and “Just Breathe,” respectively.

Teens in grades 7–12 apply in 29 categories of art and writing which are juried by luminaries in the visual and literary arts. Panelists look for works that best exemplify originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.

Rosen will be attending the Scholastic Art & Writing National Awards Ceremony held at Carnegie Hall in New York City on June 7th. She plans to study at Colgate University in the fall.

Lights Camera Kindness Ryan Hyde, the middle schoolers were challenged to do acts of kindness and create a video highlighting their actions.

The evening consisted of two presentations, one for each school, where students first spoke about how they showed kindness or paid it forward and then premiered their video.

Individual and group projects from classes

and organizations were featured throughout the event. Videos ranged from students fundraising for important causes, to paying it forward and working with peers to bring kindness into the classroom and beyond.

Each participant received a medal for their hard work and service.

Broadcasting Gift From mimeographs to the green screen, the way the Wellington C. Mepham High School student body gets its news is ever changing.

To further advance the Bellmore-Merrick Broadcasting program, Frank Merklein Sr., a member of the Class of 1940, bequeathed $5,000.

Longtime friends of Merklein, Jerry Worthing and Clare Worthing, also Mepham alumni, have been acting as ambassadors of his wishes and visited the program on March 27th

for a tour.

Merkelin worked in the television industry as a cameraman in the 1950s and was part of the “Howdy Doody” crew, as well the debut of The Today Show.

Students interviewed the couple on their Mepham experiences, as well as the life of Merklein, for future use in news packages.

“When we were students, we got our news from the school newspaper, The Buccaneer,” Jerry Worthing said.

While The Buccaneer is still produced today,

the broadcasting program films and edits daily announcements as well as provides video services for various events throughout the district.

“As the program continues to mature, we are learning about more advanced technology that can be used in instruction,” said Mary Donnelly, a district English chairperson. “This gives us an opportunity to purchase some of that new technology.”

Madagascar, Jr. Under the direction of Randi Andersen, Mallory Cogen and Laura Laude, the Bellmore School District’s Shore Road Musical Theatre Production Club’s talented cast and crew drew a packed house during performances of the musical drama “Madagascar Jr.” After a preview matinee for Winthrop Avenue fourth-grade students, the club entertained audiences with their rendition of Kevin Del Aguila’s adventure about residents of the Central Park Zoo,

who while escaping from their comfy surroundings, took a trip of a lifetime to Madagascar and learned valuable life lessons about appreciating home and the friendships they have come to value.

On stage, Chloe Boyle played the lead role of Marty (zebra) with Jack Messinger as Alex (lion), Hannah Levine as Gloria (hippo), Noelle McIntosh as Melman (giraffe) and Giovanni Scimeca as Mason (monkey). Comedic lines and actions were portrayed by a group of penguins and

lemurs, as well as a cast of other talented actors as they sang popular music from the DreamWorks Animation motion picture including “I Like to Move It,” “Relax, Be Cool, Chill Out” and “Steak.”

The show’s success was also due to the artistic talents of set committee chairperson Liz Brillantino, costume committee chairpersons Alison Prainito and Lisa Warren and lighting director Glen Davis.

Students Slime Students and staff at Summit Lane Elementary School celebrated the end of their Hoops for Heart fundraiser on March 16 by honoring top student donors and sliming Principal Keith Squillacioti in the school gymnasium.

This year, a total of 265 students participated in the fundraiser, along with Summit Lane staff members.

The national education and fundraising program promotes physical education and provides students with the knowledge of heart disease and stroke, while raising funds for cardiovascular disease research, stroke research and health education. The annual event is a celebration for the school’s fundraising efforts.

The students who raised the most money were recognized for their hard work and generosity with a medal. Each raised more than $800 and had the first opportunity to slime Squillacioti.

Wearing protective eye gear, Squillacioti sat in

a kiddie pool as students poured buckets of slime on him. Board of Education President Peggy Marenghi and staff watched as classes cheered. He was eventually covered from head to toe in the green and orange goo, a role that he later said he was happy to be a part of.

“As always, Summit Lane students and faculty have come together for a great cause as we donated to people in need,” said Principal Squillacioti.

“All these great programs that we put in place and all the resources that we have at our school could not take place without the support of our central administration.”

Nancy Golden, math specialist at Levy Lakeside School in Merrick, has seen many changes in education over her 26 years of teaching. Since the implementation of Common Core, she’s been on a mission to bring the fun back into math. Last year, Golden brought Crazy 8’s to the district – an afterschool math club for thirdgraders. The club, which runs in all three schools, has been tremendously popular. But her focus this year is fractions.

“Fractions have always been a difficult and often frustrating concept to teach and to learn,” Golden said. “That basic understanding begins in third grade, at its earliest introduction. We need to go beyond the textbook and provide children with hands-on exploration tailored to their developmental needs.”

Working with Lakeside Principal Libby Trencheny and thirdgrade teachers, Golden began running a series

of fraction workshops within each class, both before and throughout the units. Students are now spending that muchneeded time exploring in all different ways: cutting and folding paper, playing games, using Legos to compare sizes and discover equivalence, and most importantly, talking about and having fun with fractions. Golden said students have gone out of their way to tell her how much fun they are having.

Other teachers have affirmed the benefits of the program.

“You wouldn’t believe the difference with my students,” said Dr. Jenn Gargan, one of the thirdgrade teachers who worked closely with Golden. “They were able to begin their study through play and exploration. So, by the time we finally took out the textbook they already had a wealth of knowledge.

They can’t learn that with pencil and paper alone.”

made possible thanks to the hard work of 52 fifthand sixth-graders who have been preparing for the show since November.

Levittown’s Division Avenue High School DECA team recently attended the New York DECA State Career Conference in Rochester where students participated in role play activities in front of judges in their business areas of choice.

Students across the globe take part in DECA, an organization that provides opportunities for students to develop skills in the areas of vocational understanding, leadership

development, civic consciousness and social intelligence.

Through their involvement, students transform into leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges.

During the NY DECA State Career Conference, three Division Avenue students took home medals in their categories.

Becoming Puppeteers

Kindergartners at Park Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District took part in a puppet workshop on March 23rd. Parent volunteers Steve Lichtman and Kim Newman led the activity to celebrate World Puppetry Day.

Steve has been building puppets and mascots for more than a decade. He and his wife supplied students with materials to build their own Pete the Cat puppets, a character from a popular series of children’s books. Each child received a white paper

bag, blue construction paper with the outline of a cat’s face as well as strips for legs, orange or yellow construction paper for a shirt, buttons, plastic eyes, crayons and glue. The project was an opportunity for students to explore their imaginations.

Savor these beautiful (and edible) flowers C Cooking with edible flowers is a trend that has endured for centuries. According to Fleurs Gourmandes, the first recorded history of edible flowers occurred in 140 BC. Use of calendula in salads dates back to the ancient Greeks and Romans.

Victorian-era candied flowers and flowerencrusted sweets took edible flowers to new heights. Today, nothing may make a meal seem more gourmet than the inclusion of flower petals in the recipe.

Of course, before delving into the expanded world of cooking using edible blooms, some notes of caution should first be mentioned. Avoid flowers that may have been sprayed with fungicides, herbicides or insecticides. To verify safety, only use edible flowers grown specifically for this purpose, not flowers picked from

roadsides or from landscapes. Secondly, remember that not all flowers are edible.

Some can be poisonous or cause severe gastrointestinal upset when consumed.

That means all flowers should be carefully researched prior to experimenting with them in the kitchen.

To begin growing — and eating — edible flowers, refer to this list of varieties deemed safe and be careful to double-check against allergies and any interactions with medications prior to use.

Allium: These are blossoms from the allium family, which include garlic, chives and leeks. These flowers can be used to add flavor to foods.

Marigolds are just one of the many flowers that can be consumed.

Uncooked, calendula can have spicy notes that add variety to salads and garnishes.

Marigolds: These tiny flowers may be used in vegetable gardens to repel animal and insect pests. Blossoms have a fresh citrus taste that can be used in cooking.

Chamomile: This plant features small, daisy-type flowers that can be used in treats and teas.

Cilantro: The flowers from the cilantro plant can be eaten, just as the leaves and the seeds that form the spice coriander.

Basil Blossoms: It may be customary to pinch off the blossoms of basil, which come in colors from white to lavender in order to stimulate growth of the leaves of the plant. However, the blossoms, which are more mild than the leaves, can be tasty as well.

Fennel: Just like the plant itself, the flowers of fennel have a subtle licorice flavor.

Calendula: Sometimes known as “poor man’s saffron,” this yellow flower in the

Create a teenfriendly space at home Know who to call when you smell gas.

eenagers are busier than ever before. But even the busiest teens need places to unwind and relax with friends. Many parents aspire to create that type of environment in their homes but don’t know where to begin.

Parents who want to keep teens nearby can create hangout spaces at home that make it easy for teens to feel comfortable with their friends. These “teen caves” can be private but permit supervision when necessary. With a few modifications, it’s possible to transform a room in a home into a teen-friendly hangout space.

Make a private outdoor spot. Teen spaces do not need to be restricted to the indoors. Design advice site Houzz says an outdoor escape zone that includes comfortable seating in a private area — particularly a spot that can also be enjoyed into the evening — will be a coveted spot.

Talk to your children. Involve teens in the process of renovating a home to create a spot in which they would like to congregate. Talk about elements they would like to see in the space, whether it be a particular design style, technology or activity.

Invest in “indestructible” materials.

Teenagers are bound to make messes, and having other people over means contending with a certain measure of damage. Design the space with indooroutdoor carpeting, water-resistant fabrics, distressed wood and other durable materials.

Establish a shared budget. Paint is inexpensive and can transform just about any room in a single afternoon. If the room being renovated is the teen’s own bedroom, allow him or her to choose the color palette and other accents. Even if it

Having teens close by and interacting with them on a regular basis can benefit families. Data from the National Center for Education Statistics notes that parental involvement correlates to higher grade point averages. Research from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says certain parenting styles, including those that set rules and monitor teens in supportive ways, develop kids who are more likely to wear seat belts while driving, while such support also lowers crash risk. Involved parents also may reduce the chances of teen drug use and promiscuous behavior.

Personal touches turn a house into a home. Hanging pictures, whether they’re personal photographs or artwork, can really change the character of a room.

Unfortunately, some people may not know the proper ways to display pictures on a wall. Design maven Martha Stewart advises that the first step is to gather all of the pictures that are in consideration for hanging. This will enable a person to see what is available and edit their selection based on the space available, theme or color scheme. Having the artwork there enables a person to move it around like a puzzle until the placement feels just right.

Next, plan on hanging artwork at 57 inches on center, according to the renovation experts at Apartment Therapy. “On center” means the middle of the photograph or painting will always be at 57,” as this measurement represents the average human eye height. This height is regularly used as a standard in many galleries and museums.

When the goal is to hang multiple pictures, treat the entire grouping as

a single unit. This means creating the layout and finding the center of the middle piece of the grouping.

To make picture grouping easier, use paper templates with arrows to indicate whether the artwork will be hung horizontally or vertically. These templates can then be easily taped to the wall and rearranged until the grouping is ideal.

There are no hard and fast rules concerning frames, meaning they do not all have to match. But placing framed artwork side by side can give a person a feel for whether the images and the frames work together in the space.

Some people like to use frames of similar colors and sizes. Others want the eclectic mix-and-match appeal. It’s ultimately up to the homeowner.

Measuring is key to hanging a picture correctly on the wall. Take into consideration the type of attachment, whether it’s D-rings, sawtooth hangers, wire or other fasteners on the back.

Measure from the top of the frame to the hanger. Measure the wall to achieve

the 57” on center location, and then calculate where this falls within the height of the artwork and frame top.

Adjust accordingly and mark. Then measure the distance from the frame top to the hanger location on the wall.

Be sure to take the weight of the picture into consideration when selecting hanging hardware. Wall anchors may be needed if measurements determine a wall stud will not help secure the artwork — to keep the frame sturdy in the drywall. Home improvement resource Today’s Homeowner also suggests using self-adhesive rubber bumpers to the bottom corners on the back of the frame before hanging so that the picture will not damage the wall and will help it hang level.

It can take a few attempts to hang pictures correctly, but with practice it should come with greater ease. The good news is there are new products constantly being evolved to make picture hanging easier, including those that enable removal and relocation of artwork without damaging walls.

Earning Accolades

On March 15th, students from across the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District competed in the second round of the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair at the Crest Hollow Country Club.

LISEF is the regional science fair for students to present their research in order to be eligible to complete in the national Broadcom MASTERS, which is administered by the Society for Science and the Public.

John F. Kennedy’s Cameron Levy and Lucas Rosen who presented their Advance Science Research projects in the animal science and mathematics categories. Levy earned third place and Rosen earned honorable mention.

from NASA. Both young scientists were selected to advance to round 2 of LISEF. Rosen also earned first place in the mathematics category at the Long Island Junior Science and Humanities Symposium and was invited to advance to the Regional JSHS competition. Their research teachers are Barbi Frank and Barbara Franklin.

From Sanford H. Calhoun High School, two Calhoun ASR students were invited to participate in round 2. Senior Kyle Pilotti’s project won the honor of honorable mention in the category of earth and environmental sciences. Pilotti was also honored by the American Meteorological Society and presented with an award for a student researcher that showed initiative and dedication in the field of

meteorology. Sophomore Sonia Sarju also received the honor of honorable mention in the category of earth and environmental science for her project.

They work with advisers Christine Boyce and Jennifer Pefanis.

Seven students from Grand Avenue Middle School also competed at LISEF in the middle school division.

To participate at LISEF, students in sixth-eighth grades must perform a scientific investigation under the guidance of their teachers. The projects receiving a first place award or those scoring within the top 10 percent for each regional fair (based on total number of participating) receive nominations to SSP Broadcom MASTERS. T y l e r Bissoondial received first place and a Broadcom MASTER’s nomination for his project. Julianna Rosenthal received second place and Broadcom MASTER’s nomination for her project and Timothy Langone received third place for his project.

Gabriella Simal, Sahara Partap and Mackenzie Filosa received third place for their group project.

Education Partner Honorees On Wednesday, April 11th, Nassau BOCES will honor 15 people and organizations that have had a profound effect on public education in Nassau County. The Nassau BOCES Education Partner Awards program pays tribute to outstanding community and business leaders, civil servants, government officials, nonprofit executives and volunteers, organizations, school administrators and staff, students, teachers and Nassau BOCES employees.

During the past 12 years, more than 100 individuals have been honored with the Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award, which recognizes those who have made a substantial impact on public education in Nassau County. A strategic education partner with local school districts since 1967, Nassau BOCES created the award to pay tribute to those who share its commitment to enabling students of all ages and abilities to achieve their maximum potential.

This year’s honorees will receive their awards at the 12th Annual Education Partner Awards Gala on Wednesday, April 11th.

Polar Dip Series Raises Funds The iconic Camp Sunshine Polar Dip Series recently concluded and raised $217,000 this winter. Local teams from the Northeast to the MidAtlantic participated in local dips, plunging into the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean, lakes, rivers and several different polar pools!

“We’re thankful that we can still count on people to unpack their swimsuits each winter and take a quick dip into freezing cold water to support Camp Sunshine,” said Michael Smith, Development Director at Camp Sunshine.“ A couple seconds of cold are nothing in comparison to what Camp Sunshine families face on a daily basis. This is an easy way to help support your community and we saw a lot of new faces this year!”

Funds were raised by teams and individuals who committed to taking the

icy plunge. In total, 552 participants registered to participate in one of the nine dips.

“As incredible as it is to think that 552 people were able to raise more than $217,000, the fundraising component is just part of the goal of these events,” said Michael Katz, Executive Director at Camp Sunshine. “Equally as important is the awareness we bring to each area where we host these events. Our goal has always been to reach out to even more families who can utilize our services. The polar dips provide a great platform to help spread the word.”

The funds enable children with lifethreatening illnesses and their families to enjoy the award-winning Camp Sunshine on Sebago Lake in Maine free-ofcharge. At Camp, they join other families on similar journeys and experience

The Time of the Season And just like that, spring has arrived, with its bursts of warm sunshine coaxing the flower blossoms from beneath the winter-hardened soil. The Easter Bunny has already come and gone, and plans are well underway for summer vacations and the tantalizing temptation of beach season.

Seems we were only just beginning to put together our Christmas shopping lists not so long ago, doesn’t it?

It’s funny, how this concept of time seems to work its way into nearly every conversation in one respect or another the lack of it, its tendency to pass by too quickly… seldom have I heard the argument that there is simply too much time to know what to do with.

Never, in fact. Seems this would be a rather enviable problem to have. But alas, this is most certainly not the case.

As with most of life’s

struggles, it is how we choose to deal with, and hopefully, to overcome these issues that is the most important.

Redirecting our focus constantly, from wallowing in the negativity of why did this happen? to being proactive in setting a plan for what would I like to happen? going forward.

No use dwelling on the past; we need to be present in order to look to the future with anything resembling a clear perspective.

They say hindsight is 20/20; but is it truly? I would argue that, even upon reflecting on past events, I do not have an unequivocal assessment of how things might have turned out differently; or even, if they should have. No, I am a firm believer that all things happen for a reason, even if that reason is not immediately - or ever - apparent. Some things are simply not meant to be

understood beyond a shadow of a doubt. Life is nothing if not filled with unexpected twists and turns, and a touch of the unknown.

I recently came across a quote which said, in part, that it is not truly the unknown which we fear; but rather, what we think we know of the unknown. What an interesting concept, this notion that most of our apprehensions are selfmade and, if we would only take care to take a step back and let things play out a bit, perhaps we would be pleasantly surprised as to the outcome.

Spring is traditionally seen as a time of growth and progress, naturally and otherwise. The seeds must be planted and cultivated, in hopes of a fruitful season.

Whether things blossom as we wish, well, that remains to be seen. As with most things, only time will tell.

Friends of Karen

Friends of Karen is a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families.

This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area. I had the pleasure of meeting with some of their staff members to grasp a better understanding of all they have done and all they continue to do for those in need.

In 1978, Friends of Karen began with one family, one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen, who wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter. Today, Friends of Karen serves hundreds of families by providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses, and to their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning and able to cope, at no cost.

To apply for help, a parent or guardian of the ill child must call the organization and speak to a member of their Family Support Team. It is apparent to me that Friends of Karen wants whomever is going through a tough and unimaginable critical illness to know that they are not alone and that help is available for them.

Friends of Karen often hosts or participates in many events within their community. On Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th, they are hosting a team in the Long Island Marathon at

Eisenhower Park in East Meadow.

Saturday will be a 5K and Sunday will be a 10K. They are looking for people to join their Friends of Karen team and to cross the finish line knowing they’re making a difference in the lives of many. If you are interested in participating in either or both of these races with colleagues, as a family or individually, you can sign up today! Additionally, if you are interested in volunteering your time preparing for the event - handing out t-shirts, making sure every participant has what he or she needs, etc.; or at the event - taking photos for promotional purposes, you can do so. Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) invites all high school students with artistic talent, passion and ambition to an Open House on Saturday, April 28th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. LIHSA is now accepting applications for the 2018-2019 school year. Prospective students from across Long Island are invited to meet with LIHSA Principal Dr. Chris Rogutsky Bleecker and tour the campus at 239 Cold Spring Road in Syosset.

Attendees can join a theater improvisation skit, sketch in an art studio, participate in a dance class, listen to a jazz performance and experience much more to get better acquainted with LIHSA. During the Open House, parents of prospective students also have the opportunity to tour the facility and speak with the expert faculty, guidance counselors, administration and staff.

Interested students can also learn about Summer Arts Academy for grades 6-12.

As part of their professional-level training, LIHSA students regularly receive one-on-one access to experienced professionals working in the industry. Housing Grants Awarded Options for Community Living, Inc. has been awarded two contracts under the New York State Supportive Housing Program (NYSSHP) through the NYS Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance. These NYSSHP awards – together totaling $230,640 – will enable Options to assist vulnerable Long Island families and single adults residing in the agency’s supportive housing programs.

More than 140 leadership volunteers united on Thursday, March 8th, at the American Cancer Society’s annual Evening of Hope at The Fox Hollow in Woodbury to celebrate the organization’s local impact, recognize volunteers and present the distinguished Heart and Soul award.

Highlight of the evening was the presentation of The Heart and Soul Award, a prestigious honor recognizing an individual(s) who encompasses the mission of the American Cancer Society through volunteerism, participation in multiple events and initiatives and goes beyond expectations in a volunteer role to benefit cancer patients and families on Long Island.

This year’s winners are Miguel and Abby Melendez of Baldwin, New York. In the ten years they have served as volunteers, they have actively participated in Relay For Life, supported Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, the

provide much needed financial support for Options’ case managers who work directly with residents in our housing programs, which continue to grow,” stated Yolanda Robano-Gross, executive director, Options for Community Living.

“Supportive housing allows people to live with dignity in the community.

vulnerable people on Long Island.”

Options’ residents pay an affordable rent and case managers make regular home visits to monitor health and safety and teach skills, such as cooking, budgeting and much more so that the residents can live independently.
