ifth-graders at Shore Road School received a first-hand lesson on the history of the American Indian people and their importance in the United States when representatives from Journeys Into Native American Territory visited the school on March 17th.

To begin the program, the Bellmore students watched as the Journeys representatives built a teepee inside the gymnasium, complete with a cover to keep the rain out.

The Long Island Pet Expo that was held from March 6th through March 8th at the Suffolk Community College in Brentwood, had a record-breaking number of attendees and pets adopted this year.

The 6th annual event had well over 14,000 attendees in the 2.5day expo. Over 70 pets adopted, the most at any of their shows in the tristate, from local rescue groups that were at the expo. Over 600 owned dogs came with their owners to enjoy the pet friendly event over the weekend.

Parkinson Awareness The American Parkinson Disease Association, Inc. (APDA) is hard at work in Suffolk County helping to “Ease The Burden And Find The Cure.” Founded more than 53 years ago, the APDA continues to help those affected by this disease.

The American Parkinson Disease Association Information & Referral Center of Suffolk County offers support groups, educational events, literature and referrals to those afflicted with Parkinson Disease.

“Parkinson Disease can be devastating to those who are afflicted and their families” says Julie Garofalo, R.N., Coordinator for the APDA Information & Referral Center located at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown. “There has been extensive

research within the past 10 years, leading to more medications and surgical treatments to help reduce the symptoms of Parkinson disease, but, there is still no cure.

More research is needed,” she said.

Parkinson Disease is a progressive disorder of the brain caused by a lack of dopamine, with symptoms that can include a decrease in spontaneous movement, difficulty walking, postural instability, ridgidity and tremors.

While the disease typically affects men and

women over 60 years old, it is increasingly affecting people in their 20’s through 50’s. There are approximately 1.5 million Americans who are living with Parkinson Disease.

April 11th marks the birthday of Dr. James Parkinson, who first recognized the disease now named for him.

Damato, Bellmore-Merrick teen entrepreneurs Robert Freed, Evan Golodner, Edward Koton, Jake Silverman, Amanda Taormina and Alec Thea will present On the Move to a national business audience.

To enter the competition, high school business students must participate in the Virtual Enterprises course, where they learn how to build and manage their own virtual company, under the guidance of a teacher-facilitator and a business partner. Students are actively involved in every aspect of their business including human resources, accounting, product development, production, distribution, marketing and sales. Many of these programs have dual credit agreements with Farmingdale State College, as well as articulations with other colleges.

The VEI National Business Plan Competition is one of the most prestigious annual

events for public high school business students.

Students from across the country must demonstrate their global business expertise through written business plans and oral presentations. According to VEI, “The competition showcases best practices, rewards excellence, and trains high school students to apply sophisticated knowledge and skills attributed to business professionals and college students.”

“Nassau BOCES is extremely proud to help offer this opportunity to school districts as part of the Perkins Grant Consortium,” said Ms. Gene Silverman, Executive director of the Nassau BOCES Department of Career and Technical Education and facilitator of the consortium. “This is one of the many ways the grant enriches the lives of students throughout Nassau County by giving them real-world workplace skills while still in high school.”

Medical Marvels

In its third year, the North Shore-LIJ Health System Medical Marvels program had more than 200 Long Island students from 24 schools who presented mental health solutions for various issues teenagers face.

Awards were given for research papers on March 13th at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research. The first place winners, one of Jericho High School’s teams, won $1,800; Commack High School’s second place team received $1,000 and Comsewogue High School’s third place team got $500.

Additional prizes were given for presentations.

“This whole process – from researching a topic to presenting a poster to professionals, and working

as a team – is educational for the students and provides them with an invaluable experience,” said Cheryl Davidson, director of the North Shore-LIJ Center for Workforce Readiness.

“We appreciate all the hard work and schools’ participation in this year’s competition and look forward to next year.”

The Medical Marvels program was created by the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research and North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Center for Workforce Readiness in 2013. Students from Nassau and Suffolk County New York State-accredited schools participate in teams of between three and six students. Schools can have a maximum of two teams. This year’s program doubled compared to last

year and workshops and presentations enhanced the educational experience.

Participating high school this year included: Baldwin High School, East Islip High School, The Wheatley School, John Glenn High School, Farmingdale High School, Hauppauge High School, Hicksville Public Schools, John F. Kennedy High School, Lindenhurst High School, Gen. Douglas MacArthur High School, Massapequa High School, Mineola High School, New Hyde Park Memorial High School, Sacred Heart Academy, Schreiber High School, Syosset Hospital and Walt Whitman High School.

Kennedy High School will advance to the Virtual Enterprises International (VEI) National Business Plan Competition in New York City. Their school business, On The Move, will compete against 23 teams from across the country to present their company’s goals, investments and successful techniques in a national forum.

John F. Kennedy made an impressive showing in the final round of the Long Island Virtual Enterprises (LI VE) Business Plan Competition, with two teams in the running for the nationals — Boxality and On the Move. Each team formed their own company and was allowed 10 minutes to present their business plan, after which they answered a round of questions from the judges.

National Walking Day Adults are spending more time at work than ever before and an unfortunate side effect is that as a nation we are becoming more inactive.

Physical inactivity doubles the risk of heart disease.

The good news is it is a problem you can fix by encouraging your community and company to take part in the American Heart Association’s National Walking Day on Wednesday, April 1st.

On National Walking Day, Americans are encouraged to lace up their sneakers and take at least 30 minutes out of their day to get up and walk. It’s a great way to raise awareness of the importance of physical activity and to get your family, friends and co-workers started on a healthier way of life. Statistics shows that people stick to walking plans more than other form of physical activity.

And walking is one of the easiest and cheapest things you can do to reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke, the nation’s No. 1 and No. 5 killers.

Simply walking has many health benefits, which makes National Walking Day the ideal time to kickstart your physical activity routine. Adults should get at least 150 minutes of physical activity per week, while kids should get 60 minutes of physical activity a day. Physical activity can relieve depression, improve your memory and lower your blood pressure.

It is a truly admirable feat to be able to maintain such a mentality day in and day out, despite all those forces conspiring against us.

Through the “Making A Difference” college scholarship program, NEFCU awarded five $1,500 vouchers to undergraduate and graduate students (with a minimum GPA of 3.5), and five $1,000 vouchers to students enrolled at an accredited community college (with at least a 3.0 GPA).

In addition to meeting the academic qualifications, applicants were required to answer an essay question, as well as provide a resume and an unofficial transcript from their school.

Teepee Tour Fifth-graders at Shore Road School received a first-hand lesson on the history of the American Indian people and their importance in the United States when representatives from Journeys into Native American Territory visited the school on March 17th.

To begin the program, the Bellmore students watched as the Journeys

representatives built a teepee inside the gymnasium, complete with a cover to keep the rain out. While the teepee was constructed, students asked questions and learned about other historical facts pertaining to teepees. There was also a display table complete with many different cultural objects that students could explore. Once the build

The program, working in tandem with the New York State history curriculum, places an emphasis on confronting stereotypes and offering other understandings of Native Americans in history.

To celebrate their Parents as Reading Partners (PARP) program, students in grades K-2 at the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center attended a Reading Pep Rally on March 19th with author and illustrator Joe Shandrowski, who brought his dragon friend Huga Tuga along for the ride.

In an interactive program

that called for students to dance, answer questions and become fully engaged, Shandrowski took kids on an adventure through his book Seashell Mystery, where a girl named Sarah tried to figure out where seashells came from. Using their imaginations, along with music and props, students worked together to solve the puzzle of the

seashells.

Shandrowski stressed that “reading rocks,” and the students chanted that phrase during the program.

He also said that one way to help your imagination grow is to read each and every day.

Following a Luau theme, this year’s Reinhard PARP theme is “Say Aloha To Reading.”

Need a summer job? It’s not too late! Hempstead Town is looking for lifeguards at its pools and beaches!

The Aquatics Division of Hempstead Town is offering a unique screening program for certified and non-certified lifeguard candidates at least 16 years of age. Interviews for candidates will be held at the Echo Park Pool on Nassau Boulevard in West Hempstead, every Saturday from May 16th to May 30th from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Participants are asked to bring all of their certification cards to the interview as well as a bathing suit, goggles and towel. Each lifeguard must

swim 200 yards under 3 minutes and 45 seconds to qualify for the interview.

Applicants who wish to apply, but are not certified, can enroll in lifeguard training courses offered by the American Red Cross.

One morning in March, all 389 students in Holy Family School gathered in the Auditorium to watch their teachers, teaching assistants and principal perform for them.

The adults decided to act out some Dr. Seuss books for the students. Books that were chosen to be part of the performance had a worthwhile moral to them.

Rhymes, tongue twisters and discussions about what the students learned from the book were also part of the morning.

It was amazing to see the Nursery through Grade 8 students as they realized and discussed the values and concepts after they enjoyed the performance. In one of the stories: The Sneetches,

students learned tolerance, forgiveness and acceptance, while simultaneously realizing prejudice and stereotyping are not only wrong, but also ridiculous!

Sister Mary Grace was a Moderator of the Leagues of Mercy for many years and encouraged individuals to pursue service to the sick. The scholarships in her memory, which in the past have ranged from $500 to $1,000, are awarded on a one-time basis to worthy students in financial need who are studying for a career in healthcare.
