Seeing the Signs I’m always looking for signs. Except when I’m not, which makes them all the more poignant and undeniable.

Case in point, the one year anniversary of my grandfather’s passing recently came and went on March 13th, bringing with it the anticipated mix of sadness and reflection that these milestones tend to create.

Back on that day, one year ago, shortly after learning the devastating news, I stared blankly out my sliding glass door at the tree directly in front of my apartment, only to be met

with the gaze of one solitary robin. Sitting. Staring.

I must have stood at that door for a solid half hour, mesmerized by this tiny bird, alone in a barren tree, his eyes fixated on me.

Was it a sign? Was it just a matter of ironic timing?

Who knows… I chose to find solace in the serenity of the moment, comfort in the quiet.

A month later, we discovered a nest of four perfect robin’s eggs at my grandparents’ house, the first of its kind in that backyard, ever. We marveled at how it seemed to literally drop out of the sky at a most opportune moment, manifesting out of thin air,

a precious symbol that life does, in fact, go on.

Fast forward to last week.

I ran quickly to the store for a bunch of roses to bring to the cemetery, knowing that the impending “blizzard” and freezing temperatures would most likely destroy them in a matter of hours.

As I headed back to the car, a sign for birdseed caught my eye. And then, it hit me. Suddenly, I heard chirping. Loud, incessant chirping. I turned around, searching for the source… and there it was, a single, solitary robin, sitting on the top of the pile.

Some signs, you just don’t see coming.

Spotlight on Music

Community members got a taste of the North Bellmore School District’s music program, as students performed at the March 9th board of education meeting for Music in Our Schools Month.

Three ensembles, consisting of sixth-graders from all five elementary schools, entertained the crowd. Choral students, led by music teacher Carol Ng, performed “I Will Sing My Song.” The orchestra, conducted by Lisa Uckardes, played “Yesterday” and “The StarSpangled Banner.”

selected for the All-County music festival, featured the “Liberty Eagle March” under the direction of Dana Hirsch. After practicing at their home schools, students came together for group rehearsals at John Dinkelmeyer Elementary School.

“We want students to appreciate music and to enjoy music,” said Desiree Behr, a music teacher at Dinkelmeyer and Martin Avenue elementary schools.

“It’s also important to bring music to the community so they can see what our students are capable of.”

North Bellmore’s

instrumental music program begins in third grade when all students learn to play the recorder in their general music classes. Beginning in fourth grade, students can select an instrument to play in the band or orchestra, and also join the chorus.

The district offers a Festival Band and Festival Chorus, which provides a more challenging musical experience for sixthgraders and culminates with a community concert, which is scheduled for April 3 at 7 p.m. at Brookside School.

CHEER CLINIC - The Sanford H. Calhoun High School cheerleaders hosted a youth cheerleading clinic on March 11th for kindergarten through eighth-grade students in the local community. Pick a Book, Leave a Book The convenience of a great read is just a school campus away, as Wantagh School District has recently joined the Little Free Library program.

Elementary school librarian Catherine Mottola, who has one at her home, said the goal of the program is for students to trade books they are not using, share their favorite books with others or choose a book they have not already read.

“This is a worldwide movement, and I thought

the community could benefit from having little free libraries at each of the schools,” Mottola said.

Forest Lake Elementary School’s Little Free Library recently held a grand opening and is now located in a wooden receptacle on the south side of the campus, next to the playground and parking lot. Wantagh High School student Kieran McKenna crafted the school’s receptacle as part of his Eagle Scout project with Boy Scout Troop 96.

Forest Lake Principal Anthony Ciuffo said the Little Free Library is convenient, especially for members of the community who visit each of the schools’ grounds during the school day and on weekends. Ciuffo and his daughter rode their bikes to the playground during the weekend and decided to take a book home to read.

“It was really fun and my daughter had a wonderful new book to read,” Ciuffo said.

For two weeks the students have studied the life cycle of chickens and

other oviparous animals.

For their study, farmers from Quiver Farm in Pennsylvania delivered 12 fertilized eggs, an incubator and supplies and an egg carton filled with plastic eggs depicting the different stages of incubation.

During the interdisciplinary science unit, students read and

sang about chickens and used mathematics to calculate their approximate hatching dates. Upon arriving to school after the weekend, the kindergarteners were excited to see that several of their chicks had hatched.

After the completion of the unit, the chickens returned to the farm.

Under the direction of Randi Andersen, Mallory Cogen and Laura Laude, the Shore Road Musical Theatre Production Club’s talented cast and crew drew a packed house during performances of the musical drama “High School Musical Jr.” After a preview matinee for Winthrop Avenue fourthgrade students, the club entertained audiences with their rendition of author

Greenhouse Study A trip to Levittown School District’s Outdoor Learning Center afforded Gardiners Avenue Elementary School secondgraders in Theresa Lynch’s class the opportunity to plant marigold seeds in the newly refurbished greenhouse. Located at the Levittown Memorial Education Center, the greenhouse is being used for districtwide study and planting and

provides students with the opportunity to enhance science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics skills through outdoor learning.

Outdoor Learning Center teacher Jessica Mills first discussed the needs of plants and the parts of seeds. The students then examined and tasted red leaf and green leaf lettuces prior to selecting a plant to be tended in the

classroom. In addition, the students will continue to study the plant by taking its measurements each week and recording them.

After a discussion about organic gardening techniques, the students then planted marigolds in greenhouse trays, which will eventually be transplanted on the district’s school campuses.

Parkway Elementary School students in the East Meadow School District raised more than $5,000 for the American Heart Association by participating in the schoolwide Jump Rope for Heart program on February 16th.

According to its website, the American Heart Association is the nation’s oldest and largest voluntary organization

dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke.

To assist in the battle, schools can host Jump Rope for Heart or Hoops for Heart fundraisers that promote physical activity, heart healthy living and community service.

During their gym classes, students in grades 1-5 divided into groups where they exercised their heart muscles by jumping rope to popular pop music and

played double dutch with gym teachers Kelly Rohan and Michael Romanotto.

They also learned about the importance of living a healthy lifestyle while raising money for the community.

A special thank-you to the Parkway PTA for providing refreshments for students to recharge while working out.

coordinate plane.

“The resulting ‘slopefield’ helped them to visualize what the original function’s graph looks like,” Dr. Lesser said.

Reading with Character Using text evidence and their own imaginations, fifth-graders at Saw Mill Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District created life-size drawings of characters from the book “Fish in a Tree” by Lynda Mullaly Hunt.

Teacher Tiffany Antonucci played an audio

recording of the book as students read along in their own copies. The children split into small groups and used clues from the text to find out what their assigned character might look like. They studied their character’s interests and personality traits to come up with their visions.

One student from

each group was traced on bulletin board paper, and then details such as faces and clothing were added to create their almost life-like version of each book character. The activity allowed students to develop their reading comprehension skills while working collaboratively.

Patriot Pen A patriotic tone and love of country resulted in four Wisdom Lane Middle School students in Levittown receiving awards in the annual Veterans of Foreign Wars Patriot Pen Essay contest.

third-place winner Ashley Dwyer and fourth-place winner Alexander Genovese were recognized during a recent board of education meeting for their winning essays titled “The America I Believe In,” which will be hung for display in the main entranceway of the Levittown Memorial

Levittown Director of Social Studies Steve Costello noted the essays’ patriotic tone and the students’ love of country and said, “If you have any doubt about the future of our country, you’ll find these essays encouraging.”

Excellence in Art The Wantagh High School art department has announced that 12 students in Patricia Beary’s and Amy McPartlan’s Advanced Placement Photography and AP Studio classes, respectively, received regional awards in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards contest, presented by the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers. The works of these talented individuals were judged among more than 255,000 submissions to the annual competition that recognizes excellence in writing and art.

Students Alexa Dowling, Victoria Fruci and Grace Sullivan were selected as Gold Key winners in the area of photography, and their works will be further considered for national recognition.

The Alliance for Young Artists and Writers is a nonprofit organization that identifies exceptional artistic and literary talent of students. The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition, which dates back to 1923, allows teenagers in grades 7-12 to submit works in 27 categories for judging by

luminaries in the visual and literary arts. The roster of past winners includes Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote and Joyce Carol Oates.

The following students received Silver Key and Honorable Mention awards in the areas of drawing and painting: Silver Key: Caitlin Jaeggli, Iva Kalinkova, Sydney Mendolia, Caitlin Quelle and Breanna Quod.

Honorable Mention: Erin Hogarty, Jennifer Iadevaio, Breanna Quod and Dylan Wozniak.

National Wonders Twenty-one Division Avenue and MacArthur high school students recently accompanied Director of Social Studies and World Languages Steve Costello on a trip to the Grand Canyon and San Francisco. The goal of the program was to offer students the opportunity to explore the wonders the United States has to offer.

Costello explained, “In this case, we loved the

idea of combining one of the great natural wonders of the world with one of America’s most vibrant and cosmopolitan cities.”

Students traveled to Arizona’s Red Rock State Park and the Grand Canyon, as well as the Cameron Trading Post on the Navajo Nation reservation. They then departed Arizona to California, where they visited San Francisco’s Union Square, Golden

Gate Bridge, Sausalito, Exploratorium, Boudin Sourdough Company, Fisherman’s Wharf, the Japanese Tea Gardens, fabled cable cars, Chinatown and the iconic seals at Pier 39.

“The students had a wonderful time, and I believe it will be a trip they will always remember,” Costello added.

BOOTS ON THE GROUND - The Lee Road Elementary School Community Service Committee in Levittown collected supplies for troops serving abroad, which benefitted the Long Island nonprofit organization Boots on the Ground NY. The students and their families collected individual snack packages, hot cocoa, coffee, baby wipes and socks that will now be included in assembled care packages and shipped overseas.

Abbey Lane Elementary School students in Levittown are challenging the stereotype of being “macho.”

During an assembly with MACHO Man Foundation founder Cary Epstein, the students learned that MACHO is an acronym, which spelled out, means “my actions

can help others.”

Epstein appealed to the students through his references to superheroes and inferred that everyone can be one of these characters with super human powers through the use of compassion, empathy and kindness toward others. “You can

be a superhero if you use your heart and be kind to others,” he told the students.

The students pledged to take the MACHO Challenge, which requires the school to collectively document more than 500 acts of kindness over a 10day period.

The Division Avenue High School Dragon Pride Awards were presented to eight students who embody the attributes of dignity, respect, accountability, generosity, open-minded and noble.

Madison Barone, Heather Bonsignore, Kayla Frenger, Christopher LaRocca, Paige Mosca, Matthew Racanelli, Samuel Reyes-Lopez and Jake Savitt were nominated by the school faculty and

approved by a selection committee.

The Division Avenue High School administration thanks the students for being role models in their community.

Juggling Act Coordination and balance were two skills that students practiced during a recent juggling unit in their physical education classes at Saw Mill Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District.

Activities included

ball, club, scarf and ring juggling, plate spinning, flower stick balancing and more. Teachers Jim Mulvey and Tom Steinmuller assisted students in their quests to perfect basic and advanced tricks that are also popular circus activities.

The teachers also incorporated technology into the lesson by placing QR codes on the wall, which students could scan with iPads to watch instructional videos on each skill.

Getting in Step students learned musical theater while third- and fourth-graders mastered hip-hop. Each class created a choreographed routine, which was performed for parents after a week of instruction.

In May, fifth- and sixth-grade students will take part in a twoweek residency with a

professional tap dancer.

Principal Eileen Speidel said that the purpose of the program is to give students exposure to a form of art they may not have experienced before. It also encourages movement, fosters teamwork, builds stage confidence and gives students an outlet to express themselves.

Geo Bee Semifinalist Mitchell Goldberg, an eighth-grader at Woodland Middle School in the East Meadow School District, has been named a National Geographic Bee semifinalist and will compete in the New York State Geographic Bee 2017 in Albany on March 31st.

After winning his school’s geography bee in January, Mitchell took the online written qualifying test, earning a spot among the top 100 scorers in the state.

Should he become the state champion, Mitchell will receive $100, the National Geographic Concise Atlas of the World, and qualify to compete in the National Geographic Bee Championship, to be held in Washington, D.C., May 15th-17th.

The national champion will receive a $50,000 college scholarship, $500 cash, a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society, a lifetime subscription to National

Geographic magazine and an all-expenses-paid expedition to the Galapagos Islands.

“This has always been a dream of mine,” said Mitchell. “I study every day and am so happy to be given this opportunity to explore my passion for geography.”

The district wishes Mitchell much success as he continues in the competition.

The arts are an important part of education in the North Bellmore School District and that is the case at Park Avenue Elementary School, which hosts a dance residency each year.

Under the guidance of dance experts from a local business, The Dance School, kindergarten through second-grade

World Language Celebration Wantagh high school and middle school students immersed themselves in foreign language study and world culture during World Language Week from March 8th-13th. Each day, students attended and participated in languagebased activities to hone their language skills and to show appreciation for one another’s cultures.

“World language study is an opportunity to heighten and foster social

responsibility and a better understanding of global issues,” said Supervisor of Business Education and Foreign Language Pat Calosso.

At the high school, students attended a workshop on Latin Dance, a Spanish cultural symposium and Chinese presentations.

Students enrolled in collegelevel French, French 4 Honors and foreign and gourmet food classes,

baked baguettes and made ratatouille. At the middle school, students held an art museum and talent show. There were also opportunities to listen to music and to watch foreign films.

The week commenced with the induction of 81 high school and 101 middle school foreign language study students into the World Language Honor Society.

Virtual Field Trip During Foreign Language Week, Christine O’Neill’s Spanish II classes at Wellington C. Mepham High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District took a virtual field trip to Cuba.

The tour included three cities: Santa Clara, Havana

and Camagüey.

Google Cardboard viewers, purchased through a district grant, transformed student smartphones into a virtual reality experience.

The new technology provides students with an opportunity to explore the

different sights and sounds of Spanish-speaking communities around the world.

“The students enjoyed themselves and it was exciting to see them enthused about ‘virtually’ visiting a Spanish-speaking country,” O’Neill said.

Lawrence. Fr. Fakinos is also the keynote speaker of the evening’s program.

Entertainment will be provided by St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church.

Winning Essayists The Jerusalem Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution recognized Wantagh High School junior Keriann Steingruebner and middle school seventh-grader Jenna Rackley as New York State first-place winners of the 2016-2017 DAR American History Essay Contest. The annual

contest was established to encourage students to think creatively about the nation’s history and to learn about historical events. These essays will now be forwarded to the Northeast States DAR Contest for competition.

The topic of Keriann’s essay was “Technology’s Impact on the Voyage of

Christopher Columbus,” while Jenna’s essay was titled “Celebrating a Century: America’s National Parks.” Each essay was judged on historical accuracy, adherence to the subject, organization of material, interest and originality, spelling and punctuation, and grammar and neatness.

Bookmark Creation Students in Beth Johnson’s English prep class at Sanford H. Calhoun High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District learned research and resourcing skills with the assistance of librarian Kathryn Elefterion during a recent Women’s History Month project.

Students were assigned a historical female figure and learned how to navigate websites to find out more about this person.

“Listen to videos on Biography.com and get interesting facts or

something special about the individual,” Elefterion instructed the special education students. “The point of the project is for you to learn more about these amazing women.”

Student Elizabeth Randman said she wanted to research Rosa Parks after learning about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s civil rights efforts in a January lesson.

“Rosa Parks started the Montgomery bus boycott to stop African-Americans from giving up their seats if white people wanted to ride the bus,” she explained.

Later in the lesson, the students will also write a personal tribute to a woman in their own life, to help foster writing skills.

“This is to help them highlight things that this woman in their lives has done to inspire them,” Johnson said.

Afterward, students created bookmarks using computer software that included some details they learned.

“The bookmarks will be on display for the library’s patrons to use,” Johnson added.

Seeking Volunteers North Shore Land Alliance, a local land trust, is seeking high school students, retirees, educators, nature enthusiasts, youth groups and community-minded businesses to help protect and steward the beautiful areas in our communities.

These areas safeguard our air and water supplies, provide wildlife habitat and create places for people of all ages to play, learn and connect with nature.

The Land Alliance is very fortunate to work with more than 200 volunteers who contribute 1,000 hours of community service annually. That time, valued at approximately $30,000, provides support for land conservation projects and educational programs.

Volunteers assist with a variety of efforts including trail restoration, invasive species management and plant and wildlife monitoring, just to name a few. They also assist with community outreach, fundraising events, office

work and membership mailings. Local educators and naturalists share their expertise with the Land Alliance community by leading their guided the Walks in Woods and helping to educate more than 3,400 school children through their Long Island Water Education Program.

Additionally, volunteers, such as Sue Simon, an avid photographer and nature lover from Smithtown, help capture beautiful images to be featured in various Land Alliance publications and on their website. In essence, the Land Alliance cannot do their job without the important contributions of volunteers.

The Land Alliance is excited about their most recent purchase of the Humes Japanese Stroll Garden in Mill Neck, where volunteers will be integral to the re-opening of the garden. As a North Shore Land Alliance volunteer, you can learn new things and meet new people while

Science Scholars Honored Hempstead Town Supervisor Anthony J. Santino honored students from throughout the township at a reception held at Hempstead Town Hall. The students include scholars in the Regeneron Science Talent Search contest.

“We have such an extraordinary amount of talent in the Town of Hempstead and these students represent the best and brightest that our town has to offer,” said Santino.

“Not only is their high level of work extraordinary, but the dedication to their elite projects is commendable.”

For almost two decades the competition known formerly as the Intel Science Talent Search

Contest recognized the nation’s most talented high school scholars.

This science talent search competition for high school students has been renamed the Regeneron Science Talent Search Contest.

This year, 58 seniors from Long Island schools were among 300 students nationwide who were named scholars in the 2017 Regeneron Science Talent Search. In New York State, 98 students were named scholars, and seven of those scholar students reside in the Town of Hempstead. Each scholar receives a $2,000 award and $2,000 for his or her school.

In 1997, King Kullen was the first supermarket chain to participate in the annual “Check Out Hunger” campaign, a unique partnership between Long Island Cares and the shopping community in which customers can make a donation with a coupon when checking out at the supermarket register.

This year’s campaign ran

from October through December 31, 2016. One hundred percent of all donations go to Long Island Cares.

“King Kullen has a long history of making a difference in the fight against hunger and its customers have always been charitable in supporting our mission,” observed Long Island Cares/Harry Chapin Food Bank Executive Director Paule T. Pachter.

Options for Community Living, Inc. has been selected by the New York State Office of Mental Health to receive two awards to provide housing and supportive services for adults recovering from mental illness. Funding under these contracts is more than $1.3 million annually, and it will assist 85 adults with their housing and service needs.

One award will allow the agency to establish

22 new beds for Suffolk County residents in need of supportive housing. The second award will allow Options to assume the operation and management of 63 established beds/ units. The majority of the existing units are occupied and include both Nassau and Suffolk County locations.

Guest of Honor Stony Brook University will recognize the 47th Vice President of the United States of America, the Honorable Joseph R. Biden Jr., at its annual Stars of Stony Brook Gala on Wednesday, April 19th, at Pier Sixty at Chelsea Piers at 6:30 p.m. in New York City. Vice President Biden is being recognized for his outstanding career and dedication to the fight against cancer.

“Cancer touches us all in some way and at some point,” said Vice President Biden. “Everywhere I go, people share their stories of heartbreak and hope. And every day, I’m reminded that our work to end cancer as we know it is bigger than just a single person. It carries the hopes

and dreams of millions of people who are praying that we succeed, praying for hope, praying for time – not someday, but now.”

Joe Biden has devoted his life to public service and the greater good. As Vice President he led the White House Cancer Moonshot, with the mission to double the rate of progress in preventing and fighting the disease. Under his leadership, the White House Cancer Moonshot Task Force catalyzed novel, innovative and impactful collaborations among twenty government agencies, departments and White House offices and over seventy private sector collaborations designed to achieve a decades’ worth of progress in the prevention,

diagnosis and treatment of cancer in just five years.

In addition, he helped lead the effort to pass the 21st Century Cures Act that provides $1.8 billion over seven years for the Cancer Moonshot’s scientific priorities.

“We are privileged to have the opportunity to honor former Vice President Biden,” said Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley.

“The Cancer Moonshot has the potential to transform cancer research and prevention around the world. This critical initiative is a reflection of the work our researchers and doctors are doing in Stony Brook Cancer Center labs – using insight, innovation and

strategic collaborations to push the boundaries of what we know about how best to diagnose treat and ultimately prevent the disease that is responsible for more than 8 million deaths a year worldwide.”

Research and discovery are at the heart of the Stony Brook ethos and the university’s Cancer Center is a shining example of its commitment to combating the malady. Stony Brook doctors are on the forefront of the next generation in cancer care. The Cancer Center will relocate next year to the new 254,000 square-foot Medical and Research Translation facility (MART) which was designed to enable scientists and physicians to work side by side to advance

cancer research and imaging diagnostics. It will be home to the new Bahl Center for Metabolomics and Imaging, for instance, Stony Brook researchers are receiving worldwide attention for their pioneering research into the genesis and behavior of cancer cells at the molecular level, which will one day help detect, treat, and eliminate the disease altogether.

Every spring the Stony Brook Foundation hosts the Stars of Stony Brook Gala to benefit student scholarships and a select academic program. Since its inception in 2000, the event has raised more than $42 million. A portion of the net proceeds from this year’s gala will support

the Stony Brook Cancer Center.

This year’s honoree, former Vice President Biden, joins a distinguished roster of scholars, politicians, celebrities and luminaries who have been honored by the Gala for their outstanding and relentless commitment to society, such as Nobel laureate CN Yang; actors Julie Andrews, Alan Alda and Ed Harris; founder of Renaissance Technologies, Jim Simons; CA Technologies founder Charles Wang; and worldrenowned conservationists Richard Leakey and Patricia Wright.

Women Who Shine Long Island African American Chamber of Commerce, Inc.’s Ladies of LIAACC will be celebrating National Women’s Month appropriately themed this year as “Women Who Shine “we are taking the time to honor three extraordinary women whose work serves as a shining example of the work our distinguished honorees are doing in their perspective fields.

LIAACC’S Women’s History Month program will be held on Tuesday, March 28th at Pa-Nash Restaurant located at 14414 243rd Street Rosedale, Queens New York 11422.
