Writing Award Winner During the Press Day event, students attended lectures by renowned writers about how to combat fake news and other problems facing contemporary journalists.

Students from 28 Nassau and Suffolk counties, as well as New York City, attended the event.

Kravitz said the strength of the Wantagh Warrior is due, in part, to the excellent leadership of Grace Anne and co-editor-in-chief Grace Tague, both of whom have been winning journalism awards for the past four years. In addition to this year’s Adelphi University Press Day Quill Award, Grace Anne has also acquired an honorable mention for her sports column from Syracuse University’s Empire State

School Press Association journalism contest.

that time flies, meaning that it passes too quickly. But in the mindful state, time doesn’t really pass at all. There is only a single instant of time that keeps renewing itself over and over with infinite variety.” ~ Deepak Chopra

Time, without fail, is the one thing we all wish we had more of, made better use of, didn’t squander so liberally… and the one thing we can never get back once it is lost. Even with this insight, though, it tends to continue to pass us by, just out of grasp. Why is that? What is the driving force behind our ability to let the minutes lapse into hours, the hours into days, the days into a downward spiral of being complacently, and consistently, unproductive?

Some would point to the company we keep, the environments which surround us, the choices we make

to find comfort - even in our misery, at times - but comfort, nonetheless. Is it our great fear of change, of upsetting the routine, which leads us to sit back and watch as the world parades on by? There are those who make it their mission to take action, regardless of the unfavorable circumstances they may find themselves thrown into; but these individuals seem to represent a slim minority.

How do we, the others, this great majority who desire to improve our lot in life, follow suit? Perhaps if these instants of time were filled with the “infinite variety” Chopra speaks of, life would not seem so mundane at intervals. But the fluctuations which occur are often too minor to register as true growth. It seems we, as a society, are incapable of feeling we are moving forward unless we are in the midst of tumult and upheaval.

this path to progress and to have it be a steady - if uphill - journey. That, I think, is something we would all find ourselves infinitely more capable of sustaining. Time, on a road such as that, would travel with us, even, on pace; rather than sprinting miles ahead, leaving us in the rearview mirror. It may pass regardless, but at least we would be along for the ride, active participants in how we choose to use it rather than bystanders waiting for some phantom sign that this is it … NOW is your time!

In reality “the” time is when you choose to acknowledge it, when you make it your mission to take control of your destiny and be a part of the process, instead of allowing it to happen to you. We know this, we believe this in the depths of our souls… now we need to use this knowledge to create the beautiful future we envision for ourselves.

Wantagh High School student-journalist Grace Anne McKenna, co-editorin-chief of the school’s Wantagh Warrior, garnered a coveted honorable mention award for best news article during Adelphi University’s Press Day journalism contest, held on February 28th. Grace Anne joins a host of Wantagh student-journalists for the 14th consecutive year, who have received this honor, adviser Peter Kravitz said.

Grace Anne’s article, “A Transition of Power Creates Sense of Wantagh Pride,” dated April 28th, 2017, highlighted the retirement of former superintendent of schools Maureen Goldberg and her replacement and current superintendent John McNamara.

Welcome Friends of Greater Port Jefferson, Inc., DBA Welcome Friends

The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night.

Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers together form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters,

local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders, local village government and other agencies.

After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup announced their decision to become an independent not-for-profit corporation named “Welcome Friends.” The operation has become self-sustaining, with a solid foundation of local community support.

Welcome Friends is currently in need of the following volunteer positions: Cooks, Assistant Cooks/ Food Prep and Pick Up/Delivery and a Grant Writer.

Merrick Avenue Middle School teacher Dan Stiglitz and 10 of his seventhgrade coding students recently presented their work on the OYOclass learning platform to technology educators and professionals across Long Island at the Technology ASSET Conference.

Moving Forward with Clark Lambert

The Art and Pleasure of Meditation Before getting into the subject, let’s divide our readers into two categories. The first are those who are faithful followers of yoga, who practice meditation regularly and find deep layers of inner peace within themselves. The second group are the many folks who have never tried meditating simply because they never had the opportunity (or desire) to pursue it. It is this group that today’s column is for.

As a starter, let’s take a look at what is happening around the world today. Tensions are rising among many countries, trade wars are a real possibility, inflation is starting to come into play, the Federal Reserve may soon raise interest rates; that, plus the wild gyrations of the stock market, leave a host of uncertainties for many of us. Being affected by all of this, wouldn’t it be nice to have an outlet to channel these negative thoughts and events into a more calming, soothing state of mind?

If so, welcome to the art and

pleasure of meditation!

First off, by doing this at home, one does not need special equipment or any type of meditation room. What is necessary is a quiet room or a place in the home where you will not be interrupted. As you progress further into this skill, you will be able to take a few minutes to meditate anywhere you might be. The time spent in meditation could be as little as 5-10 minutes or up to an hour.

As a starter, many people find that sitting cross-legged on the floor, both thumbs lightly touching, with hands outstretched, palms facing upward and eyes closed, is a good start. One should begin with deep breathing, inhaling, holding it for a few seconds, then slowly exhaling through the mouth. With practice, one can easily take in deeper breaths. I have found that this type of deep breathing, done 10 or 15 times, starts the cycle of relaxation and release of tension. {As a side note, I use this frequently when faced with

stressful situations, such as driving in heavy traffic. You can easily do this, keeping your eyes on the road at all times.} To aid in this process, many people prefer quietly repeating a special word that has meaning to them. Having spent much time in Asia, I chose one that I learned while studying there. A key point to remember about meditation is that, by going through the process, one insulates him or herself from everyday problems and nagging worries. Like most other things in life, one gets better with concentration and practice.

At this point, let’s make one thing clear. I do not claim to be a meditation expert, just another person who found comfort and inner peace through self-learning and lots of practice.

So…what are you waiting for? Start hunting for your quiet space now. You will find it very rewarding, with each session better than the previous one.

by Bob Koenig, a steering committee member and vice president of the Levittown Historical Socie-ty and a musician, and the videotaping of recollections of individuals who grew up in Levittown

and are the children of original Levittown home owners (1947 to 1951).

Suggested ideas for future activities include an historic bike tour of Levittown, a house tour, a car show, a church crawl, a cultural event that looks at the increasing diversity of the community, a culminating dinner dance and parade.

Levittown completed the celebration of its 70th Anniversary last year with a very successful dinner/dance and with an eye toward a major celebration in 2022 for its 75th.

Residents and organizations have continued to meet to discuss plans going forward and to plan one or two events each year to

The next meeting of the anniversary committee will take place on Tuesday, March 27th at 7 p.m. at the VFW Hall at 55 Hickory Lane in Levittown.

Experienced and eagerto-learn volunteers are sought to help with fundraising, social media, publicity and advertising, graphics and display, video production and editing, hospitality, event planning and a variety of other jobs that emerge for different events. Interested individuals and organizations are encouraged to come to the meeting to learn about the events and how they can become involved.

The Little Mermaid

Transporting the audience to a magical kingdom under the sea, W.T. Clarke High School’s student acting troupe, Lights Up Productions, gave a riveting performance about a young mermaid’s desire to explore the world above when they presented Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” on March 1st-3rd.

Inspired by the Hans Christian Andersen tale and classic animated film, “The Little Mermaid” is a beautiful story about love and adventure. Beneath the sea, King Triton’s youngest daughter, Ariel, wishes to pursue the human Prince Eric in the world above.

She bargains with the evil sea witch, Ursula, to trade her tail for legs. When the

deal isn’t what it seems, Ariel needs the help of her friends, Flounder, Scuttle and Sebastian, to restore order under the sea.

On March 1st, prior to the main performances, the school held a Senior Citizens’ Dinner Theater, sponsored by the W.T. Clarke PTA in collaboration with the East Meadow Kiwanis and Clarke Theater Arts Parents Association.

Community residents were invited for a delicious Italian dinner with musical performances by the W.T. Clarke High School orchestra and a special viewing of this year’s spring musical. Dinner services and ushering were provided by members of the W.T. Clarke Middle School Builder’s Club and

W.T. Clarke High School Key Club.

The Lights Up Productions cast and crew would like to express their gratitude to director and choreographer Kristen Norwark, vocal director Rachel Fogel, the design team, the stagehands, the tech squad under the guidance of technical director Elliot Oppenheim, the orchestra pit – led by W.T. Clarke High School Orchestra Director Steven Barbieri – and the district’s building and central administrators for helping to make the spring musical a success.

Nassau Champs Bellmore-Merrick Central School District’s Sanford H. Calhoun varsity cheerleaders have been successful this season. The team landed on top as winners at the Nassau County Section 8 Championship for the

second year in a row.

Undefeated in the Division 1 Co-Ed category they took eighth place in the New York State Championship on March 3 in Syracuse.

“We are so proud of this team and how hard they worked together to

accomplish something great this season,” said coach Chrissy Meiselas.

“They are an amazing team and a special group of athletes who always think about the team first.”

Empathy Equals Kindness

Vaughn Messina, a fourth-grade student at Forest Lake Elementary School in Wantagh, recently raised $1,025 to help two peers who are batting cancer. This past fall, Vaughn told his mother, Karen Maureen Messina, that he wanted to help them through the sale of his toys and by collecting

donations.

“Helping people is a nice thing to do when someone is going through something hard, like having cancer,” Vaughn said. “I was bored with these toys and thought I could sell them and donate the money.”

Messina explained that Vaughn’s grandfather

previously died of cancer, and said her son was surprised that children can also be affected by the disease. She said Vaughn learned the disease can be painful and the resulting sadness about his classmates prompted him to help.

Principal Anthony Ciuffo said the school’s character education program always promotes the importance of being kind, and Vaughn’s reaching out to his classmates is a prime example of this lesson learned. “This is a fine example of the kindness that students at Forest Lake Elementary School show to one another, and Vaughn’s support of these classmates is wonderful to see,” Mr. Ciuffo said. “We are very proud of Vaughn.”

Creative Contest Forest Lake Elementary School fourth-grade student Ethen Chen and middle school sixthgrader Isabella Bartilucci were first-place winners in the Wantagh Horizons Program Recycled Sculpture Contest for grades 3-4 and grades 5-6, respectively.

The 15-inch, highlycreative sculptures of local marine life were made primarily out of recycled or upcycled materials and were accompanied

by a fact sheet about the ocean animals that are commonly found off the coast of Long Island or that migrate through local waters. The sculptures were judged by teachers on the interesting use of materials, originality of design, ability to stay within the size requirements, overall aesthetic look and researched facts on the sculptured marine life.

Awards were presented during the district’s annual Horizons Day on March 3.

In addition, Mandalay Elementary School fourthgrader Liam Fields won second place in the grade 3-4 contest with Mandalay third-grader Joe Riso placing third. In the grade 5-6 contest, Wantagh Elementary School fifthgraders Liam Rotzler and Kate Vezzuto won secondand third-place awards, respectively.

Wantagh High School’s Virtual Enterprises International firm Guaco Taco, a taco food truck, placed second in booth design and for their impact marketing campaign during the Mid-Atlantic Trade Show, held in Virginia Beach, Virginia on March 5th-6th. The VEI firm’s participants included Nancy Ambrosio (CEO), Donald Conway (Human Resources), Gabriella Iannuzzo (CMO), Joseph Loccisano (IT), Jonathan Loew (Finance), Kiera Roth

(Administration), Matthew Ryall (Sales & Marketing), and Stephen Vaiano (CFO).

The district implemented the VEI program during the 2016-2017 school year and allows students to develop a virtual business from concept to implementation.

The class is a real work environment in which the students assume business responsibilities based on their backgrounds and interests and the classroom simulates the atmosphere of a company.

As employees of a virtual business, students are held accountable for the company’s performance.

They conduct market research, develop a business plan, design an e-commerce website, pay wages and taxes, maintain 401(K) plans and draft an annual report. In addition, students have the opportunity to interact with 5,000 other VE firms from school districts locally, nationally and internationally.

Kindergartners at Birch School in Merrick were treated to a visit from a special guest during their celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 2, as the always interesting Cat in the Hat made a stop at each classroom. During his visit, the Cat asked

students to tell him about their favorite Dr. Seuss books, while he shared some fun facts about his favorite car – the “Catillac,” his favorite boat – the “Cat–amaran,” and other interesting “cateristics” about himself.

Wantagh Celebrates Throughout the Wantagh School District, elementary students celebrated the writings of Dr. Seuss and his March 2nd birthday as part of the Read Across America initiative, the world’s largest reading celebration.

In Elizabeth Shevlin’s first-grade class at Wantagh Elementary School, students immersed themselves in Dr. Seuss books throughout the week. Dressed in green, they read “Green Eggs and Ham” and tasted a snack of green pudding and vanilla wafers. The students also completed an assignment asking them to write what

they would do if Thing One and Thing Two came to visit their home and completed a report on a Dr. Seuss book of their choice.

Exploring how to enjoy a new book without actually having one in their hands, first-grade classes at Wantagh Elementary School also created digital story videos based on the famous writer’s classics. They took digital photos of the pages and narrated the text with expression.

Technology teacher Henry Chiu then introduced a tool to edit audio and students used Movie Maker to create the final videos.

Forest Lake Elementary students celebrated Crazy Hat Day and took additional opportunities to read throughout the school day.

Wantagh Middle School students Francesca Capuano, Cathryn Popadin-Les Niak and Hannah Popadin-Les Niak also organized a Reading Buddies activity at Mandalay Elementary School to acquire their Silver Awards. During the activity, fifth-grade students were paired with kindergarten buddies as they read Dr. Seuss Books together.

Nation Creations Third-graders took a comprehensive look at the United States for a social studies project at John Dinkelmeyer Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District.

The assignment incorporated history,

geography and cultural studies. Students had to write about the founding of the United States and life today. They created “At a Glance” sheets that included the nation’s capital, type of government, unit of money, major

religions and crops.

The children created posters or booklets to present their information.

Each presentation included a map of the country’s different regions, and a map showing America’s location in the world.

Kickline Performs

The Wellington C. Mepham varsity kickline team competed for the sixth time in the program’s history at the 2018 NDA High School National Championship in Orlando, Florida.

The team competed among the best in the country and made it into finals in all three routines, placing ninth out of 32 teams in Small Varsity Jazz; 10th out of 17 in Large Varsity Team

Performance and 12th out of 32 in Large Varsity Pom. Prior to leaving for nationals, the team was named the 2018 Long Island Champions for Pom for the ninth time in the last 10 years.

Wantagh Horizons Program students in grades 3-6 attended Horizons Conference Day at Mandalay Elementary School on March 3rd, an annual enrichment day that allows gifted and talented program students to partner with their parents in handson activities.

During the rigorous workshop offerings, participants were challenged to think and perform at a high level while exploring technology, physics, engineering, anthropology, hydraulics and art.

“These engaging

workshops provided a wonderful opportunity for students and their parents to explore new topics and share in their continuous love of learning,” said Horizons teacher Renee MacDermott.

Students worked with certified Origami instructor Mary Ann Scheblein-Dawson in the creation of intricate Zentangle spring designs.

They also learned to use native Long Island peoples’ primitive tools and techniques for survival and fabricated their own amulet during Brett Curlew’s workshop

on primitive technology.

Understanding the basic concepts of physics and engineering, students in Thomas Fields’ Egg-Citing Ride workshop created a design to keep an egg safe during a bungee jump.

Presenter Susan Beltrani also introduced students to the science of comparative anatomy through the reading of bones. Finally, Kaitlyn Humphrey, one of the district’s science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics teachers, taught students how to build an hydraulic claw like those used in arcades.

and after and we can then open a dialogue about how that coincides with what it’s like being a high school student and start to make those connections.”

Although this week was the ideal opportunity to introduce students to the practice, Sullivan has actually been offering practices regularly to faculty members during off periods.

Together with Good Decisions Week coordinator and Assistant Principal Gerard Owenburg, Sullivan plans to collaborate with clubs and teachers to further drive these mindfulness points home.

“It all came from this year’s mission charged to us as educators from Superintendent John DeTommaso about ‘connecting with kindness and caring,’” Owenburg said. “This is a way for us to get kids thinking about how they can better take care of themselves as well as their peers.”

Owenburg also said they are working on the creation of a space in the building where students can go to practice during their off periods.

“It’s a way to calm down, be centered and feel happier,” Sullivan explained. “When you have

a day that is difficult this gives you a way to take back control.”

Other programs included substance abuse awareness, interactive workshops to deter DWI/ distracted driving and internet safety. Merrick resident Steve Weiner addressed students about goal setting, and the ability to be strong in tough situations.

The self-proclaimed “Strong Man” is a Guinness Book of World Records holder. His message to the students was well-received as he performed some his Strongman feats such as rolling a frying pan and bending a horseshoe.

“In addition, he allowed the students to try ageappropriate strength activities and presented a great message about goal setting and perseverance,” added Athletic Director Craig Papach.

“These full grade assembly programs in addition to classroom activities presented by Pride for Youth, LICADD, and individual teachers, I believe, served our students well,” added Seinfeld. “It is my sincere hope that we, as an adult community, work together to send healthy and mindful messages to our children.”

Levittown community volunteers gathered in the Levittown Memorial Education Center’s gymnasium on March 1st for the 22nd annual Recognition Night for Community Service, hosted by the Levittown Public Schools. A member from each organization was honored for their role in making Levittown a better place.

The gymnasium was decorated in Levittown spirit with red, white and blue balloons and entertainment was provided by Division Avenue High School chorus students and General Douglas MacArthur High School’s acapella group, MacApella.

Attendees enjoyed a dinner that was prepared and served by the culinary and food service students enrolled in the Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Center’s culinary program.

Before the recognitions took place, Assistant Superintendent of Instruction Todd Winch spoke about the power of community and how each honoree is a valuable member of Levittown.

“With a community of over 50,000 individuals, it requires a lot of people to step up and play active roles working together to make our community the best that it can be,” said Winch.

School of Character Lee Road Elementary School in the Levittown Public Schools was recently recognized as a 2018 New York State School of Character by Character.org based on the school community’s dedicated focus on character development and its positive effect on academic achievement, student behavior and school climate.

Lee Road Elementary School is one of just 63 schools to receive this distinction, including one

of olnly only four in New York. As a result, Lee Road was awarded with a banner and plaque and is currently in the running to be considered for the National School of Character title, the organization’s highest distinction.

To receive the New York State School of Character status, Lee Road School went through a thorough application process. Last year, the school also applied but received honorable mention.

explained that they wanted to apply again to Character. org as an opportunity to receive feedback on what could be done better.

“We are always looking to improve,” he said. “This reward is a reflection of the students, faculty and parents and their work towards building a school climate that promotes care, kindness, teamwork and citizenship.

The annual state Science Olympiad competition included more than 20

various science events and challenged students from 55 teams to utilize their science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics skills to earn event medals while working with a partner.

Sense of Mindfulness In February, East Broadway Elementary School introduced a new Mindfulness Club to thirdgrade students to educate them on how to live in the present moment and be aware of their emotions.

The club met on March 6th to focus on the five senses and engage in activities relating to touch, smell and sound.

Students gathered in the library with club advisors Lisa Gribetz, school social worker and Chantale Connan, an intern and graduate student at Fordham University School of Social Work.

They formed a circle on

the carpet and listened as Gribetz read the book “What Does It Mean to Be Present?” by Rana DiOrio.

The group then discussed how being aware of your five senses helps you to be present. The students listened to different sounds while making guesses and spoke about how everyone experiences sounds differently.

In addition, students played a guessing game with different smells and had the opportunity to guess objects based on how they felt to heighten their awareness of their senses.

“My hope is that student’s learn to slow

down, breathe, take in the world around them and understand that they have the ability to control themselves and their reactions to whatever comes their way,” said Gribetz.

Mindfulness Club meets weekly before the start of the school day for two months. The club was opened up to all third grade students at East Broadway and had around 35 students sign up. Due to the popularity, Gribetz will run a second round of the club in April and May to accommodate everyone.
