Sixth graders introduced themselves, talked about their hobbies, interests and likes, and also mentioned their favorite books from kindergarten.

The sixth graders made their videos at home so each kindergartner could see the face of his or her buddy without a mask. Ms. Buran and Ms. Yager said this is the beginning of regular digital interaction between the two classes and they hope to eventually expand it to live video chats.

T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations.

Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued.

To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country and multiple wishes have being granted on Long Island recently! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck.

Recently, many Long Island residents had their wishes come true.

Each week for the remaining weeks this month, I will feature wishes that were granted right here on Long Island, starting with Kathy W. Dorothy Delia is an 87 year old resident of West Babylon. She worked and volunteered for the Salvation Army in Ridegewood and Queens for over 20 years. Prior to COVID, she was very involved in her church by coordinating the prayer chain, greeting worshippers and helping at fundraisers and events.

Dorothy desperately needed dental work, but because she lives on a fixed income, she could not afford it on her own. She had been losing teeth and could only eat soft foods. She wished for dental work, which was granted! In February 2020, she got a new healthy smile!

Many seniors experience social isolation, which can lead to undesirable

conditions.

Granting a Twilight Wish can help change that!

You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. As basketballs sailed through hoops at John G. Dinkelmeyer Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District, students were not only taking care of their own hearts, but were helping stomp out heart disease.

During the week of Feb. 22-26, students took part in Hoops for Heart, part of the

American Heart Association’s Kids Heart Challenge.

Physical education teacher Jim Mulvey set up different basketball skill stations around the gym. Activities included Around the World, a game where they took shots from different spots, and dribbling relay races.

Students could also make voluntary contributions

to the American Heart Association, and the school raised about $650. Mr. Mulvey said Hoops for Heart is an annual activity at Dinkelmeyer to help students understand the importance of staying healthy and fit as well as helping others through charitable acts.

East Broadway Elementary School students from the Levittown Public Schools recently participated in Random Acts of Kindness Week. Members of the East Broadway PAX Ambassador Club, led by social worker Danielle Bantileskas, challenged the school community to work hard, show kindness and make the school a better place.

Good deeds were shared on purple hearts and displayed in the school hallway. At the end of the week, the club members read through the paper hearts and selected nine students to receive the Polar Bear Award for their outstanding kindness.

Award recipients included Charlotte

Buckman, Milena Ferreira, Ava Filagrossi, Cameron Peterson, Gabriella Popolizio, Michael Russo, Jack Ryan, Jackson Schmutzler and Danielle Schultz. In addition to receiving a certificate, the nine recipients also earned homework passes thanks to East Broadway’s Student Council President Olivia Rausenberger who advocated for them.

The PAX Ambassador Club stemmed from the school’s PAX Program, a skills-based program that gives students the ability to self-manage themselves.

Classes engage in the PAX Behavior System which is shown to improve student self-management inside and outside of the classroom. The club is

comprised of eight fifth grade PAX Ambassadors: Emma Dunlevy, Aiden Filagrossi, Ryan Klotz, TJ McKeever, Mary McNerney, Joe McNerney, Cameron Peterson and Gabby Shananhan.

These students show excellent leadership on a daily basis as they strive to make East Broadway Elementary School a better place. They help to launch a peaceful culture throughout the school with their PAX Visions, where students share what they want more of in their class or school. They also recognize PAX Leaders, or those who make good decisions, throughout the building, and model appropriate behaviors and positivity each day.

Mandalay Kindergarteners Are 100 Days Brighter Mandalay Elementary School kindergarten students in Kristine Rogate’s class celebrated the first 100 days of the 2020-2021 school year with an array of activities to commemorate this momentous occasion.

Divided into stations, the activities were designed to bolster English language

arts, mathematics and art skills the students have acquired since the fall semester began in September.

Using brightly colored paint, students painted dots on a picture of a gumball machine, separating each color into groups of 10 until reaching 100. The class was also instructed to

write down 100 words seen throughout the classroom and to make a “100 Days Brighter” crown. Groups of students also played the dice roll game in which they each rolled the dice until they reached the number 100 on a grid.

Their favorite activity, however, was dressing as if they were 100-year-olds.

Catholic Daughters Aid Vets And Celebrate A Centenarian Catholic Daughters Court #1690 has been busy at work helping veterans and celebrating life.

A collection spanning three-weekends in February to benefit veterans residing at the Northport Veterans Medical Center resulted in thousands of items donated by parishioners of St. Bernard’s Parish. Items of underwear for men and for women totaled 270 and 247 items for dental hygiene and care were collected along with 257 items for shaving including razors, shaving creams and gels and 132 hair care products. The collection also brought in hundreds of other items including soaps, detergents, pajamas,

thermal pants and shirts and Petco gift coupons for service dogs.

Chairwomen Sally Cook and Jean Leviton delivered the items to Northport Veterans Medical Center in early March and were heartily thanked by Chief of Voluntary Services, Richard Kitson, who grew up in Levittown, and Jennifer Pohl, assistant of Voluntary Services.

Kitson said that every item donated would go to a veteran in their facilities and commented on the generous history of giving by St. Bernard’s parishioners.

On March 7th, the sisters conducted a drive-by to celebrate the 100th birthday of long-

time Catholic Daughter, Helen Dowd. Well over 100 birthday cards were presented to Helen by more than 20 Catholic Daughters members who were joined by some of their husbands and several Rosarians, who paraded in their cars from the meeting location at Gardiners Avenue School to Helen’s home. Horns honking and a stream of cars attracted the attention of neighbors who joined the celebration on the front lawn of Helen’s home.

Nassau County Legislator John Ferretti and Town of Hempstead Town Clerk Kate Murray were on hand and presented Helen with proclamations.

Green beer Green beer is not an Irish custom, but an American one. The most common beer consumed in Ireland is Guinness, which is dark brown to black in color, making green dye useless in Irish pubs since it would be largely invisible in the stout.

Golf tournaments One would not associate golf with St. Patrick’s Day unless they reside in Nome, Alaska. Golf is a popular Irish pastime, and each year the Bering Sea Ice Classic Golf Tournament takes place right around St. Patrick’s Day. Bright green golf balls are used, and breaks are factored in between

holes to warm up at local bars.

Wearing green According to The Christian Science Monitor, individuals in the United States started wearing green to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in the early 1700s. They believed it “made one invisible to leprechauns.” The official color for the holiday used to be a sky blue known as “St. Patrick’s Day Blue,” established during the reign of King George III. In addition to these traditions, specialty items, such as coffees and shakes, also are very popular. However, most of these do not have origins on the Emerald Isle, either.

Yet, no matter where traditions began, there’s no denying St. Patrick’s Day has long inspired celebration.
