TAX PREPARATION FOR INDIVIDUALS & SMALL BUSINESS

The Merrick School District will host a public planning meeting to discuss chartering Merrick SEPTA, a local chapter of the National Parent Teacher Association and the New York State PTA. Members of the Nassau Region PTA will be present to provide information about this proposal. The meeting will be held at Levy Lakeside School in Merrick on Monday, March 19th, 2018 beginning at 7:15 p.m. Parents and community members are invited to attend and be a part of this informative meeting.

The Merrick UFSD recently hosted a group information meeting, which more than 50 community members attended, many asking thoughtful questions and expressing interest in the formation of a new SEPTA for Merrick elementary students.

Why PTA? Not all decisions affecting a child’s school

happen at the local level.

It has been a mission of National PTA to address the needs of all children. PTA has been a driving force in establishing school lunch programs, after-school care, school bus safety, and TV rating standards before they became law. With several million members, its voice is heard. The PTA shares in the commitment to strengthening the bridge between home and school.

A Merrick SEPTA would look to enhance services to the district’s special needs population, which makes up over 200 Merrick UFSD students. The Merrick SEPTA would provide support for students who have either 504 plans, individualized education plans or other learning needs that may exceed those of the mainstream student population. They serve to assist parents with information and guidance.

Moving Forward with Clark Lambert

The Stresses of Everyday Life The signs of stress today are everywhere. One only has to travel on our roads to observe the high levels it has reached. Drivers cut you off, constantly honk their horns in a frenzy, and freely give their finger salute to all. How about our supermarkets where everyone jockeys into line at the deli counter or later at the checkout line.

Sound familiar? The list could go on and on.

So how does one avoid this mayhem and still maintain a calm, controlled mindset? What I would like to share with you is a different approach to everyday life on Long Island, or anywhere else you may travel.

The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night.

Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers together form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters, local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders, local village government and other agencies.

After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup announced their decision to become an independent notfor-profit corporation named “Welcome Friends.” The operation has become self-sustaining, with a solid foundation of local community support.

Board of Ed Recognition Recognitions and accolades abounded in the East Meadow School District on February 15th as the district’s board of education acknowledged W.T. Clarke High School for being named a Reward School by the New York State Education Department, and students from both district middle schools as Terrific Kids.

Board of Education President Scott Eckers and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth A. Card Jr. commenced the honors by presenting W.T Clarke High School Principal Timothy Voels, and Assistant Principal Richard Lagattolla, with a certificate of distinction for being named a Reward School by NYSED. “I feel very honored to present this award on behalf of the commissioner of education and the Board of Regents,” said Eckers. “This certificate

celebrates Clarke’s success in supporting educational excellence. We applaud your efforts.”

Each year, NYSED grants Reward School designation to those schools in the state that rank among the top 20 percent in English language arts and mathematics assessment performance, have a graduation rate above 80 percent, and obtain the most progress and/ or highest achievement in the state without significant gaps in student achievement. This year’s honor was given based on each school’s performance during the 2016-2017 school year.

The evening continued with board trustee and East Meadow Kiwanis President Marcee Rubinstein acknowledging the sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders from W.T. Clarke and Woodland middle schools who were

named Terrific Kids for the months of December, January and February.

The Terrific Kids program is sponsored by the East Meadow Kiwanis to recognize middle school students who exhibit a positive attitude, good character and responsible citizenship, and who are exemplary role models.

The program promotes character development, self-esteem and perseverance.

The celebratory meeting included a performance by the district’s first a cappella group – consisting of East Meadow and W.T. Clarke high school students – who serenaded attendees with John Lennon’s “Imagine” and Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.” In addition, the East Meadow High School Brass Ensemble paid tribute to the nation’s armed services with tunes representing each branch of the armed services.

Buzzing About History Four W.T. Clarke Middle School students in the East Meadow School District have qualified for the New York (South) Regional Finals of the National History Bee. The school’s qualifiers — seventh-grader Claire Baek and eighth-graders Nicholas Espinosa, James Griesing and Tristan Patel — took an in-class written

exam on U.S. and global history and were among the top 20 highest scorers in the school. Having excelled on the online exam, which was the next step of the competition, they will now advance to the regional finals, to be held in East Brunswick, New Jersey, on April 17th.

At the regional finals, the students will participate in

three rounds of fast-paced and interactive buzzerformat competitions against other students in the region, to determine who will advance to nationals.

The district wishes Claire, Nicholas, James and Tristan much success as they move forward in the competition.

Paying it Forward Members of Woodland Middle School’s Peer Helpers club, in the East Meadow School District, inspired sixth-graders to make a positive impact on others during a “Pay It Forward” assembly.

At the opening of the presentation, every sixthgrade student was given one blue and one orange index card. As members of the Peer Helpers shared a story about a day in the life of a student, they instructed the sixth-

graders to hold up their blue cards when they heard a positive statement and their orange cards for a negative statement.

When the students held up their cards, the presenters placed a Post-it note of the same color on a large paper heart at the front of the auditorium. This served as a visual representation of how negative words and feelings can affect an individual in one day.

Following this activity, the students watched a

video clip from the movie “Pay It Forward.” The clip explained the theory that if you do something kind for someone, they in turn will pay it forward to create a chain reaction of positive change. The Peer Helpers encouraged sixthgraders to spread kindness throughout the school by extending themselves to other students, whether by saying hello, helping to carry their books to class, or sitting with a new student at lunch.

Year of the Dog Third-graders at Abbey Lane Elementary School recently embraced Chinese culture during their Chinese New Year celebration on February 16th.

The students created decorations and participated in a colorful parade throughout the hallways of the school for student onlookers.

Leading up to the festivities, third-grade classes studied the government, culture,

people, economy, geography and history of China. Students also created their own Chinese New Year book and wrote about their personal zodiac signs.

“They have really done an amazing job,” said teacher Susan Zizza. “They love learning about other cultures and we have been comparing how different China is from the United States which they are amazed by.”

Classrooms were decorated in spirit of the Chinese New Year, as students crafted a variety of items such as paper lanterns, masks, crowns, Chinese New Year placemats and dragons.

In addition, students celebrated the Chinese New Year with a traditional feast including pineapples and tangerines and each received a red envelope containing play money.

When Life Gives You Lemons Strange as it may seem, I still hope for the best, even though the best, like an interesting piece of mail, so rarely arrives, and even when it does it can be lost so easily. ~ Lemony Snicket ~ The above is one of my favorite quotes, penned by American author Lemony Snicket, creator of the famed “Series of Unfortunate Events” books and several other works. A bit tongue in cheek, with a dash of sarcasm, his words have always resonated with me on many levels. Mostly concerning the irony of life as a whole, they offer an undeniable degree of wisdom in between the cynical undertones.

I have often been categorized as an unapologetic idealist; which is to say, optimism mixed with a touch of unrealism. Having taken to heart the expression that you can - quite literally - do anything you put your mind to, I see no valid reason why the seemingly

impossible be not, in fact, very possible with the proper balance of dedication and drive.

Of course, this concept often involves multiple parties working as one, which is generally where problems come into play.

Individually, we can each set our minds to particular goals and aspirations and see through the necessary steps to complete them. As a group, even a small one, it often requires a meeting of the minds, so to speak, a bit of give and take to find an acceptable middle ground. The problem with this is agreeing upon the “happy” medium.

As with most favorite quotations, this particular one seems to resonate year after year, albeit applied to different circumstances; but relevant, nonetheless. As much as time marches on, just as many aspects of life remain the same.

I will always feel optimism is a preferable quality to embody, farreaching as it may be. If you can’t hope for the best, then what is the

B’Way Lights in Levittown Gardiners Avenue Elementary School’s theatre club recently showcased their singing, acting and dancing abilities to students, staff and family members during their production of “Broadway Lights.” With guidance from theatre club directors Jennifer O’Connell and Maureen Eagle, the club of 86 students held a performance for family members and two in-

school performances for their peers.

The show focused on the importance of having a dream and never giving up. Dressed in their best costumes, students sang tunes from popular Broadway shows such as Annie, Grease, Hairspray, Mamma Mia, Oliver, Rent and The King and I. The choreographed dances charmed audiences as students performed hits

like “We Go Together,” “It’s The Hard Knock Life,” “There’s No Business Like Show Business” and “Give My Regards to Broadway.”

In addition, special touches were added to songs such as “Good Morning Baltimore” from the musical Hairspray.

Students performed “Good Morning Levittown” for audience members.

With a passion for science, she conducted research on the chemical compound trifluoromethyl at Stony Brook University.

Her research garnered her second place at the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium and advancement to the second round of the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair.

Shah is a member of numerous honor societies, including National, History, Mathematics, Science, English, Spanish and Tri-M Music, for which she serves as secretary.

She holds leadership positions as president of the Multicultural Club and Science Olympiads, co-director of the role committee for DECA, and editor-in-chief of the school’s newspaper, The Vanguard. She also plays violin in the school’s pit orchestra and performs at local nursing homes as a violist with the Clarke Cabaret. Athletically, she is captain of the bowling and badminton teams and plays on the varsity tennis team. Outside of school, Shah tutors middle school students and serves on the teen advisory board at the East Meadow Public Library. She plans to major in chemical engineering in college this fall.

“It was exciting to find out I was named a

finalist,” said Shah. “This distinction is a rewarding reflection of my hard work and an opportunity to earn a scholarship for college.”

Earning the distinction of Clarke’s salutatorian, Pantho Sayed is a wellrounded student enrolled in a variety of Advanced Placement and collegelevel courses and actively involved in the high school and community. Among his school involvement, he is vice president of the National and French honor societies and a member of the Mathematics, Science and English honor societies. He is also covice president of DECA, a lawyer for the school’s mock trial team, a member of the school’s Red Cross Club and a saxophonist in the jazz ensemble.

Within the community, Sayed volunteers at Nassau University Medical Center, where he assists in labs, performs administrative duties and stocks nursing stations. He also aids teachers and organizes programs at the Long Island Muslim Society mosque in East Meadow.

“It was a little overwhelming hearing I was a finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program,” said Sayed. “I didn’t think I’d advance, and it’s an honor to be one of the selected few to receive this opportunity.”

Sayed aspires to be a lawyer and plans to study political science in college.

The district congratulates both seniors on becoming finalists in this prestigious program.

Advancing to States Wantagh High School’s Science Olympiad Team A placed third out of 45 teams in the Nassau East Regional competition, held at Wantagh High School on February 3rd. The team will now advance to the New York State competition, to be held at Le Moyne College in Syracuse on March 9-10. The annual Science Olympiad Competition includes more than 20 various science events and challenges students to utilize their science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics skills to earn event medals while working with a partner.

Jumping Rope for a Cause Students in grades K-2 at Bellmore’s Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center grasped the handles of colorful jump ropes during physical education classes throughout February. In attempting to break their own personal records for successful jump-roping, they also raised more than $16,044

for the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope for Heart Campaign.

Principal Patricia Castine said she is extremely proud of the students, who displayed great leadership skills during the campaign.

The students raised $4,000 more than last year, she noted.

is a national education and fundraising event sponsored by the American Heart Association and Society of Health and Physical Educators, whose goal is to not only empower students to improve their own health, but to help other children with heart health issues.

A 15-pound lion with bulging eyes, a bright red tongue and a long, wispy tail thrilled Wantagh Elementary School second-grade students as they learned about the lion dance, a Chinese New Year custom to scare away evil spirits. On loan from the Chinese Center of Long Island, the handmade piece of cultural history entertained the students as they watched Wantagh teacher Henry Chiu manipulate its expressions

during a presentation on traditional lion dancing and his family’s traditions during this holiday, which is also known as the Lunar New Year.

During the lesson, the students learned that 2018 is the Year of the Dog and that the Chinese New Year not only stretches from February 16th to March 2nd, but is the most celebrated holiday throughout the world. They learned that families start their day eating sweets and

handing out red envelopes filled with money to share their riches. In addition, they learned that there are 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac and that each animal possesses certain human personality traits.

To conclude their lesson, Mr. Chiu then demonstrated how two persons with much skill and endurance are required to animate the mythical creature through dance.

Toys of the Future Through research and much imagination and innovation, Shore Road sixth-grade students in the Bellmore School District either improved upon toys currently on the market or created a toy of the future during the class’s Toy of the Future Challenge.

Teacher Phinola Baeza explained that the idea came to her from attending a videoconference with The Toy Museum of New York, “Discover Your Inner Inventor,” which discussed toys of the past and the reasons behind their popularity and sustainability.

During the resulting challenge, students were instructed to research toys, investigate

the process of toy testing and then either build upon or enhance a toy currently being sold. They also had the option of creating a new toy of the future.

Megan Einstein’s and Kathryn Gabberty’s Lifetime World Dolls included a chip to assists with the owner’s socialization skills as the owner ages. Alexa Gaspar, Sophie Goodman and Ally Yucht also created updated virtual reality glasses for on-the-go activities, why Alec Ader and Ava Goldsmith improved upon a paper airplane kit for their toy Paperflys. Isabel Blasi and Olivia Dina created Smarties, a stuffed animal with an embedded

tablet for educational learning opportunities, while Ashley Felsberg and Kelsey Nichols created the Whizzle Ball. Like a boomerang, the Whizzle Ball returns to the player through a magnetic glove.

Ally Yucht explained that success of the toy depends on “keeping it advanced but not totally unrealistic.”

In addition to the design, the students completed a booklet about the creation and design process and gave a presentation to peers about the toys’ price point, problems they met along the way and their plans for marketing the product.

Boasting their Skills partner every day. In their packets, students colored in one rocket ship for each 15 minutes that they read. The class with the highest average number of minutes read each day earned a pizza party.

Principal Eileen Speidel said the competition energized the children, and she hoped that it would develop a lifelong love of reading.

To fulfill the district’s mission statement on “contributing to our global community with creativity and compassion,” students shared their love of reading with others by donating gently used books for The Book Fairies.

Mr. Wonka conducts a contest by hiding golden tickets in five of his candy bars and the winners of these tickets earn a free tour of the Wonka factory, as well as a lifetime supply of candy.

At this level of the competition, members of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation will evaluate the finalists’ academic records, information about the

high school’s curricula and grading system, recommendations, information about activities and leadership and a personal essay.

An exemplary student, Annie is an Advanced Placement Scholar and a member of the National Honor Society, Foreign Language and Science honor societies. She is the school’s Government Organization co-president and adviser to the board of education, as well as Key Club president and a board

member for the Tri-M Music Honor Society.

Annie is also a Science Olympiad medalist and a recipient of the Long Island Science Congress Achievement Level Award.

An athlete, Annie is a member of the varsity track and cross-country teams.

She also volunteers her time teaching computer skills to adults in the Students Teaching Adults Computers program, tutoring peers and teaching religious education at St. Frances de Chantal Church in Wantagh.

Upon graduation, Annie plans on pursuing a degree in the sciences and English and is currently weighing her options with attending college at either Boston College, SUNY Binghamton or the University of Delaware.

The district congratulates Annie on this outstanding accomplishment and best wishes for further success in the competition.

As part of their study of Black History Month, students made Kente cloth-inspired projects in Jill Emmer’s art classes at Newbridge Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District.

Kente cloths began in Ghana, Africa where the

rich and colorful fabrics were woven on looms.

Each color has a special meaning such as blue for love and harmony. For their project, Newbridge second-graders wove paper strips to recreate Kente cloths. They used colors that represented what was important to them.

“I feel it is imperative that the curriculum I teach offers a multicultural approach,” Ms. Emmer said. “This project was a joyful insight into this magnificent textile craft that has become important to some Americans as a way of recognizing their roots. “

On March 1st, a festive crowd gathered at Wellington C. Mepham High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central School District to learn more about the Islam faith and Muslim culture during the second annual Middle Eastern and South Asian Night.

The event is the brainchild of junior Rina Sarfraz, who explained

that her goal is to “educate others about Islam as well as show off the beautiful intricacies of her culture.”

Attendees enjoyed a variety of activities including coloring mandalas, receiving henna tattoos and nibbling on traditional foods such as samosas, naan, kebabs, banana chips.

Some participants even dipped their toes – and

hips – into an interactive Bollywood dance lesson.

Hosted on behalf of the World of Difference and Leo clubs, led by adviser Josephine Parlagreco, the groups aim to teach others about acceptance and respect of people no matter race, religion, gender, etc.

Proceeds from raffle sales will benefit the UN Refugee Agency.

Exploring Orbits As part of their new unit on the moon, first-graders in Jennifer DeLuca and Karen Vaiano’s classes at East Broadway Elementary School built models of the moon, sun and earth on February 27th. Prior to the project, classes discussed facts that they knew about the moon and shared questions that they had

about it.

The project allowed students to receive a better understanding of the word orbit through a handson activity. The classes watched two educational videos about how the moon orbits the earth and how the earth orbits the sun. They were then given clear instructions on how

to build their own model of the movement using paper, crayons, glue and scissors.

With the help of DeLuca and Vaiano, each student colored the earth, sun and moon to their liking and glued the pieces together to form a working orbit that they could take home.

Empty Bottles, Full Hearts One nickel at a time, students at the John Dinkelmeyer Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District are making a difference in the world. The children are collecting empty water bottles to raise money for various charities.

The school is supporting a different cause each month.

In February, students collected 4,000 bottles and donated $200 to the Ronald McDonald House. The March charity is the March of Dimes, an organization that benefitted Dinkelmeyer fifth-graders Lily Rubino and Hannah Rubino when they were infants. The girls were part of a group of fifthand sixth-graders who presented at a schoolwide assembly on March 2. The students talked about the importance of charity, which is a key part of

the district’s mission statement, and encouraged their classmates to bring in water bottles and even soda cans from home.

To mark Autism Awareness Month in April, the school will donate to Sensory Beans, a local indoor play space for children with disabilities.

In May, money will go to the Moebius Syndrome Foundation, which helps children suffering from the craniofacial neurological disorder that can lead to facial paralysis. Principal Faith Skelos said a teacher’s grandchild suffers from the disorder, and many of the school’s charity choices are based upon personal connections within the school.

Sixth-grader Justin Segrete said he was inspired to support these charitable acts because he is a strong believer of

the mantra, “Treat others the way you want to be treated.”

Fifth-grader Leah Smith added that she hopes Dinkelmeyer’s acts of kindness and generosity can start a bigger movement.

“The world can become better because everyone is going to start seeing what we’re doing,” she said.

The initiative is sponsored by the school’s Shared Decision Making Team and led by teachers Lori Alduino and Lauren Saccone.

“The students are so invested in this,” Ms. Saccone said.

“They feel good to do good for others, and they are seeing that they can make a difference. There’s a lot of compassionate people in this school, and it’s infectious.”

Tail-Wagging Second-grade students in Melissa Tintle’s class at Northside Elementary School read to therapy dogs Toby and Joey on February 28th as part of the school’s pet therapy reading program with Bideawee, a pet welfare organization serving metropolitan New York and Long Island. Through a variety of services Bideawee cultivates and supports the life-long relationships between pets and the people who love them.

Coordinated by Northside reading specialist Dyanne Case to encourage reading and build students’ confidence, about four dogs and their owners visit the school each month to read with

different classes in the building and help students who struggle with reading.

The dogs create a relaxed environment free of judgement for students to read.

Joey’s owner Marcia Berrios and Toby’s owner Loretta Keating created two sections in the school’s library where the second-grade class was split into small reading groups. The students read “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” by Ron Barrett while petting either Joey or Toby. Each student had the opportunity to read the book out loud with their peers. At the conclusion of the book, the class sat and watched as Berrios and Keating showcased Joey and Toby’s tricks.

The partnership between Bideawee and Northside Elementary School was formed four years ago after Case read “Rosie: A Visiting Dog’s Story” by Stephanie Calmenson.

She was inspired to find an organization that could come into the classroom and comfort students as they read.

“Reading to the dogs helps my students feel comfortable and relaxed about reading,” said Case.

“My goal is to foster a love of reading. When children love to read they become better readers.

They are all very excited about reading to the dogs and I love to see their smiling faces as they read each month.”

World of Cultures Jonas E. Salk Middle School students celebrated International Day on February 16th by participating in a scavenger hunt on different countries in the school’s library. Under the guidance of teachers Marie Capizzano and Linora Ortega, English as a New Language students set up booths about their country of origin and spoke with their peers throughout the day about their cultures, experiences and more.

Students in English and foreign language

classes stopped by the library and filled out a worksheet while rotating through the different booths. Information on countries such as The Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Ecuador, Saudi Arabia, South Korea and Turkey were provided

by ENL students who dressed in special attire from their countries and helped answer questions.

They also created boards and PowerPoints about their countries that students could refer to.

The collaborative lesson

allowed students to work together to learn more about the world around them.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for the ENL students who tend to be very quiet and shy to share their culture and their experiences,” said Capizzano. “It’s also great for the rest of the students to see where their classmates are from and learn a little background information about them.

I think it’s interesting and fun for all of the students involved.”

Seussical Connection Dr. Seuss would have turned 114 years old on March 2nd, so students and staff at Newbridge Road Elementary School in North Bellmore School District decided to honor the renowned children’s author.

Activities throughout the day centered on his many books and also celebrated how reading brings people together. Students from buddy classes partnered up to read and test their minds through science and engineering challenges.

Inspired by the book “Bartholomew and the Oobleck,” first-graders from Lynda Brust’s class joined fifth-graders from Danielle McAllister’s class to make their own Oobleck.

Children worked in pairs to make the slime using cornstarch and water, plus crayons to add color.

The students studied the differences between solids and liquids.

Fourth-graders from Patti Mitchell’s class read Dr. Seuss books with firstgraders from Jennifer

Ecuyer’s class. The students found comfortable spots throughout the room to read together.

Karen Collins’s sixthgraders were joined by kindergartners from Peggy Vento’s class for Dr. Seuss-inspired games and challenges. Students used Popsicle sticks and masking tape to make nests for plastic eggs based on the book “Horton Hatches the Egg.” Others stacked plastic red cups to recreate the tower hat from “The Cat in the Hat.”

Forest Lake Elementary School students in Wantagh celebrated the written word during Pick a Reading Partner Week, with a full schedule of special activities to support literacy.

During the two-week event, students read as many T-shirts as possible during Read a T-Shirt Day and celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday by wearing crazy hats. Ample opportunities to drop to the floor or a

comfy chair to read were made available throughout the week as students improved their reading stamina. Students were also encouraged to take a photo of himself or herself reading with a pet, since PARP’s theme this year was Paws for Reading.

The week also included a technology component as Principal Anthony Ciuffo read two bedtime stories, Mark Pett’s and Gary Rubinstein’s “The Girl Who

Never Made Mistakes” and Kathryn Otoshi’s “One,” which was streamed live via YouTube.

PARP week also included night activities, including an assembly with author Darren Sardelli and a book fair. Students were also encouraged to play games that involve literacy with family and continue their reading by visiting book stores and the library.

Good, Clean Fun

Sixth-graders weren’t afraid to get their hands dirty on March 6 at Saw Mill Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District, as they ironically created an item to help them get clean. Students in Christopher DaRold’s class made bath bombs during a STEAM activity.

Working in groups, they mixed ingredients

including baking soda, starch, water, coconut oil, vanilla extract, soap coloring and other items to form a solution. Students filled and packed two hemisphere molds with the mixture and pushed them together to make their round bath bombs. Each child got to take one home to have a colorful scented product to make bath time

fun.

Mr. DaRold said that as part of the sixth-grade science curriculum, students learn about chemical reactions, and they would get to observe that while using the bath bombs in their tubs at home.

Varsity cheerleading teams from both Division Avenue High School and General Douglas MacArthur High School had an impressive season this year, taking top spots in various competitions and recently making their way to the Universal Cheerleading Association’s National Competition in Orlando, Florida, where MacArthur earned ninth place in their national division out of 37 teams across the country.

MacArthur earned fourth place and Division took home fifth place in their respective divisions.

To qualify for the UCA’s National Competition, both teams participated in the UCA’s Regional Competition back in December and scored high enough to continue to Nationals in Florida.

Nationals consisted of more than 700 of the

top junior varsity and varsity cheer teams from throughout the nation competing to become National Champions.

The two teams created t-shirts together that read “One Town, Two Teams, Same Dream,” and were thrilled when MacArthur earned ninth place in the competition.
