The Charity of The Month for March is: United Cerebral Palsy of Long Island www.ucp-li.org

Back then, green attire was a symbol of Irish pride but was banned in Ireland, which was still governed by the British. However, on the streets of New York, homesick soldiers stationed in the colonies had the freedom to sing Irish songs, wear green, play the pipes to familiar tunes, and speak Gaelic. The parade was a boisterous time to celebrate Irish culture.

New York City became home to a large number of Irish immigrants. As the number of Irish immigrants in New York increased, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations continued to evolve and

even spread, as immigrants started to call cities other than New York home.

Today, the NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade is one of the biggest parades in the world. The day begins with High Holy Mass at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral at 8:30 a.m. Then the parade begins along 5th Avenue, running from 44th Street to 79th Street from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The 2020 Grand Marshall is James T. Callahan, General President of the International Union of Operating Engineers.

Callahan traces his lineage to County Limerick and County Kerry, and will lead the 259th anniversary of this beloved parade.

A Saint Who’s Not A Saint

St. Patrick is a man revered in Ireland and around the world. Despite being an influential figure in the history of Ireland and Christianity, St. Patrick is a saint in name only.

Millions of people around the world celebrate whom they believe to be an official saint each year on March 17. However, according to Irish Central and writer Ken Concannon, the formal canonization process in the Roman Catholic Church was not in place during its first millennium, a period of time in which Patrick

was active. The official process for canonization was not instituted until around the 12th century, long after Patrick died.

St. Patrick joins two other Irish saints who were never formally canonized. The only Irish saint to be canonized is Fergal, also known as St. Virgil of Salzburg. He was canonized by Pope Gregory IX in 1233.

St. Patrick became a “saint” by popular opinion. In the early years of the Church, many martyrs and those whose lives were especially holy were considered saints, even if they were not

canonized. It is probable, with the approval of a bishop, that St. Patrick was considered a saint for these reasons.

The concept of St. Patrick not being an official saint adds to the mystery of the man, who was born in Britain and was said to have converted the Irish from paganism with fabled symbolism that borrowed from ancient traditions.

Even if his status as saint is informal, St. Patrick certainly made his mark, with a worldrenowned celebration commemorating his achievements.

United Cerebral Palsy of Long Island is a non-profit organization with the mission to advance the independence, productivity and full citizenship of people with cerebral palsy and other disabilities. They have actively been serving those in need on Long Island for over 70 years!

This organization, despite their name, helps individuals with a wide range of disabilities. In fact, over 65 percent of those they serve today do not have cerebral palsy.

They are equipped to serve those with Down Syndrome, Learning Disabilities, Mental Health Disorders, Autism, Epilepsy, Spina Bifida, Traumatic Brain Injury, Sensory Impairments, Chronic Physical/ Medical Conditions and Tourette Syndrome, among others.

St. Patrick’s Day has become a beloved celebration in which people of Irish descent and even those with no trace of Irish blood gather to celebrate.

Over the years, celebrations of St. Patrick, who was instrumental in bringing Christianity to Ireland, have evolved.

Traditions now include wearing green clothing, toasting with a pint of Guinness, eating traditional Irish cuisine, and prominently displaying shamrocks. Attending St. Patrick’s Day parades also is part of the festivities.

Even though St. Patrick was a missionary who visited Ireland many centuries ago, the origins of much of the revelry surrounding St. Patrick’s Day, are more recent.

Historical documentation puts some of the earliest St. Patrick’s Day fanfare at various places in the United States, such as St. Augustine, Fl., Boston and New York City. In fact, New York is the site of the world’s largest St. Patrick’s Day parade.

Mepham To Host Annual St. Baldrick’s Fundraiser St. Baldrick’s Foundation, the nonprofit organization supports childhood cancer research. They anticipate having more than 100 shavees and more than 50 hair donors to Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths program.

Attendees will be entertained by the Amityville Highland Pipes and Drum Band, who plan to perform during the event, and there will be a special sneak peek

at the Mepham Skull and Bones spring musical, “Footloose,” as well as raffles, food and music.

Emily Gillis, a senior from Division Avenue High School in the Levittown Public Schools is making school history. The star shooting guard for the Lady Dragons basketball team completed her high school basketball career with a record breaking 1,346 points and now also holds the record for the most points scored in a season.

Gillis’ sister Madison previously held these two record breaking titles for the high school. Madison graduated from Division Avenue High School in 2019. Gillis comes from a basketball family and has been playing since the first grade. Reaching 1,000 points is impressive enough for any high school student athlete but breaking the school record was an exciting moment for Gillis who said she worked hard for it, with the

help of her sister.

“I knew it was going to be a challenge, but I was up for it,” she said. “I set a goal for myself a while ago and really worked hard in the off season to get ready for this upcoming season.”

Gillis said it was also important for her to help her team win. She plans to attend Gardner Webb University in the fall where she will continue her basketball career but said she will miss her teammates at Division Avenue High School.

“I’m going to miss playing with the friends that I grew up with,” said Gillis.

“Especially Hailey Thomas since I’ve been playing with her since first grade.”

Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease.

That news may be especially important for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.
