Tender Loving Cats, a non-profit, a Long Island no-kill kitten and cat rescue run entirely by volunteers, experienced a boom in families stepping up to foster kittens and friendly adult cats over the past year due to the pandemic.

This led to many more cats and kittens coming into the adoption program from the streets and finding homes.

However, the need for

foster families is ongoing.

“Fostering is fun, rewarding and saves lives,” said Marge Goldin, a volunteer for the organization.

“During ‘kitten season’ which runs April through October, Tender Loving Cats and other rescues get more requests for kitten placement than can be handled. But the number of kittens that can be saved is limited only by the number

of fosters available.”

Tender Loving Cats manages all the medical needs of the cats/kittens and provides assistance and support throughout the process. Once they are old enough and socialized, Tender Loving cats uses social media to find them forever homes. No cat or kitten is adopted before they are spayed or neutered, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations.

Goldin says that Tender Loving Cats is always in need of volunteers to assist in working 2-hour shifts in the two adoption centers that the organization runs out of two PetSmart locations in North Babylon and West Babylon.

“This past year has been especially challenging, as the number of homeless cats has risen, whether due to people losing their jobs and not being able to care for their cats anymore or moving to other locations and leaving their cats behind,” Goldin said. “We are stretched to the limit, but we are determined to save as many cats as possible. We have a motto at Tender Loving Cats that we rescue the mistreated, save the injured and love the abandoned and we try to do just that.”

Occasionally Tender Loving Cats is faced with situations where cats or kittens have serious medical challenges.

Twilight Wish recipients report that having their wish granted impacted their life for the better. Their mental and physical health often improved, positively changing their outlook on life! The wishes that this organization grants truly changes the way that our society views aging, as it witnesses seniors living life to the fullest. By sharing their recipients’ stories, they inspire both older and younger generations and help bring about a cultural shift in how aging is perceived in our society.

To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country and multiple wishes have being granted on Long Island recently! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck.

This organization has continued to do their good work throughout this pandemic. Today they are still helping others and when going to grant a wish, they are taking all the necessary safety precautions. Safety is a top prioity at The Twilight Wish Foundation.

T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations.

Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued.

Sometimes a wish fulfills an immediate need, and sometimes it is a last wish or lifetime dream.

Large or small, all wishes provide a meaningful “thank you” to the senior for a lifetime of service to others. Every wish they grant helps build a culture that values and respects our senior population.

The Twilight Wish Foundation has expanded throughout America and they currently have 17 chapters. The majority of their chapter directors and chapter volunteers have fulltime jobs, but volunteer their time because they believe so much in the impact Twilight Wish has on our senior population.

Many seniors experience social isolation, which can lead to undesirable conditions. Granting a Twilight Wish can help change that! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive,

Kennedy’s Montalbano Nets 1,000th Career Point

John F. Kennedy High School senior Cameron Montalbano cleared her 1,000th career point in the Cougars 51-36 win over Elmont on Feb. 9.

Montalbano posted 26 overall points during the game on a buzzer-beater, which was the first for the girls basketball team this winter season.

“Since she was a freshman, Cameron was a starter in the shooting guard/small forward position,” said Mallory Freely, coach and physical education/health teacher.

Montalbano averages 20.3 points a game, including 11 rebounds and 4 assists.

“I’ve never met a more

coachable, outgoing and hardworking player before,” added Freely.

“I’ve been her coach all four years and watching her grow as a player has been such an honor. Our district’s motto to our players is to ‘work while you wait,’ and Cameron does just that and then some.”

When not in school, Montalbano practices on outside teams and with trainers to perfect her game.

“She never settles and always feels she has room to grow as an athlete,” said Freely. “It is students like Cameron who make me want to be a better coach.

Cameron’s tenacity and

passion elevates those around her to do the same and it is truly wonderful to experience.”

Young Adults: Be Part of the Solution!

Help Save Lives in our Community Nassau County residents know all too well about the dangers of substance use as the opioid epidemic continues to destroy families and lives throughout our neighborhoods.

Young adults, aged 18-25, are particularly affected as they often know first-hand, the devastation and sorrow of losing family, friends and peers to overdose and addiction.

YES Community Counseling Center’s Partnering in Action Change for Tomorrow (PACT) Project asks young adults (ages 18-25) to participate in a voluntary and anonymous survey about their knowledge, attitudes and behaviors.

Young adult participation will further PACT’s efforts to improve solutions to prevent and reduce substance use in our communities. Participation is voluntary. Survey results are anonymous and confidential.

Individual data is never reported; only aggregate data is used to

inform and develop our alcohol and substance use prevention efforts. The approximate length of time to complete this survey is 10 to 15 minutes.

The PACT project is funded through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (SAMHSACSAP) to prevent the onset and reduce the progression of substance use and its related problems among persons aged 9-20. This initiative collaborates with state and federally funded community coalitions including the Alcohol & Drug Abuse Prevention Team (ADAPT) at Farmingdale State College, Levittown Community Action Coalition (LCAC) and the Massapequa Takes

Action Coalition (MTAC).

Partners include the Farmingdale, Island Trees, Levittown, Massapequa and Plainedge Public School Districts as well as the Long Island Prevention Resource Center, Nassau County Police Department, New York National Guard Counterdrug Task Force, and St. Joseph’s Hospital.

Working together, we seek to understand patterns of substance use to better address this challenge through targeted prevention, education and outreach.

Students Hold Food Drive For Veterans

After studying about the presidential cabinet as part of the Bureaucracy Unit in AP Government at John F. Kennedy High School in the BellmoreMerrick Central School District, Kara McManus’ students became curious and had many questions about the Veterans Affairs Department.

“Specifically, the

students were struck by the rising poverty and suicide rates among America’s veterans,” explained McManus. “From this discussion, the students were inspired to create valentines and to hold a food drive for veterans on Long Island” Donations were delivered to The Veterans Place in Yaphank, an organization

that houses homeless veterans. It’s food pantry also provides food for veterans and their families who live on Long Island.

“This was a wonderful way to spread the compassion of the Bellmore-Merrick Community beyond our immediate borders,” added Principal Gerard Owenburg.

The 9th Annual Long Island Imagine Awards has made the decision to convert the live awards gala to a virtual event that will take place on Tuesday, April 27, 2021 from 5:00-7:30pm. After the success of the 2020 virtual event due to Covid-19, the volunteer planning committee agreed that rather than continue to postpone, it is best to produce another exciting virtual event and get the prize money in the hands of the winning nonprofits as soon as possible. Bethpage Brings Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program Online Offers Members and Non-Members Free Virtual Tax Filing Assistance for 2021

Bethpage Federal Credit Union will help low-to-moderate income households prepare their tax returns by offering its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) free tax filing services online for the first time. Now, in its 18th year, the program is open to all eligible Long Islanders, including nonBethpage members.

Now through Thursday, April 8, 2021, trained and bilingual tax preparers will be available to assist eligible taxpayers with 2020 incomes of $57,000 and below, via pre-scheduled Zoom appointments. To schedule your appointment, visit lovebethpage.com/vita.

has partnered with New York State to provide free virtual workshops where taxpayers can utilize online software to file their own taxes. “It was very important to us that qualifying taxpayers be able to access free tax filing services during the pandemic,” said Rob Suarez, Assistant Vice President, Bethpage.

“Since that decision was made, we worked to develop a virtual VITA program for our tax preparers to work directly with tax payers to seamlessly handle the filings. We’ve also been

working closely with the IRS to head up an education program to help other organizations across Long Island go online as well. While most continue to struggle with COVID concerns, safety is our number one priority.”

Bethpage has secured over 50 trained volunteers from Adelphi University, Long Island University, Molloy College, and New York Institute of Technology, who will work one-on-one virtually with tax payers to prepare the returns.

Bethpage VITA volunteers will also educate eligible working families about the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) while preparing tax returns. The EITC is an anti-poverty

program available to four out of five eligible Long Island households. VITA volunteers will work with taxpayers to ensure that eligible families are aware of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which could bring up to $6,557 into the hands of deserving Long Island families. Credit amounts are based on income levels, filing status and other factors. Eligible households can claim up to three years back of Earned Income Tax Credits.

Bethpage has also partnered with The Health & Welfare Council of Long Island, which is an umbrella human services organization consisting of over 100 member organizations.

HWCLI has teamed up

with getyourrefund.org to help people file their taxes online with the help of HWCLI Staff and IRScertified volunteers from across Long Island. This year, taxpayers will be able to access their tax services from the comfort and safety of their own home by visiting https://hwcli.com/ vita, or reaching out by email or phone at taxhelp@ hwcli.com or 517/7380447.

In 2020, Bethpage completed 1,341 VITA tax returns and helped secure IRS total refunds of over $1,700,000. Bethpage also helped secure $163,419 in child tax credits in 202O, and $425,256 in Earned Income Tax Credits.

Since the program’s inception in 2004, over

24,266 individuals have filed their tax returns through Bethpage, resulting in $26,552,294 million returned to the Long Island community.

Qualifying taxpayers planning to take advantage of Bethpage’s VITA program must bring the following materials with them for review: photo identification, social security cards for you, your spouse, and dependents, current year’s tax package if you received one, wage and earnings statement(s) Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R from all employers, interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099), a copy of last year’s Federal and State returns
