Project9line To Offer New Free Stand-Up Comedy & Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Classes Project9line, a nonprofit organization with the mission to empower veterans with reintegration through the arts and activities.

The organization was formed in 1977 as a result of funding obtained from the Town of Oyster Bay, which enabled them to provide street outreach and job placement for youth. Shortly after, they expanded upon their services for youth and have grow to provide a multitude of programs for children, adults, and families through Federal, State, County and private funding streams. Some of their current programs and services are below: Counseling Services: YES CCC believe family involvement and assistance is an integral part of treatment for children, adolescents, and adults. After all, the greatest successes in treatment often occur when all family members recognize their role related to the presenting problem and are open to active participation in the healing and growing process. Addiction Services: Comprehensive treatment is available to children, adults and families facing the complex problems of chemical dependency, as well as DWI assessments and specialized recovery groups. Available to anyone.

YES CCC provides a financial literacy program called Commerce Plaza to students throughout Long Island at their Levittown location. This unique program immerses students in a simulated business community with hands-on experience by assigning them roles and tasks that replicate actual work experience. Students learn about leadership, budgeting, operating a business, banking skills, and teamwork.

Since opening in May 2000, Commerce Plaza has hosted over 69,000 students from school districts on Long Island.

eight have advanced to the finalist-level in the Regeneron STS. The 40 finalists nationwide were selected from 300 scholars and 1,804 entrants.

In addition to the $2,000 awarded to the semifinalists’ school, each of the finalists is awarded $25,000. They represent 37 schools across 19 states.

Finalists will participate in a weeklong competition from March 9-16, 2022, where they will undergo a rigorous judging process and compete for more than $1.8 million in awards.

Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s John F. Kennedy High School seniors Christopher Luisi and Desiree Rigaud were named finalists in the Regeneron Science Talent Search, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors.

Luisi and Rigaud were among only seven students from across Long Island named finalists and 40 nationwide on Jan. 21. Four other Kennedy students were named semifinalists on Jan. 6: Michelle Brown, Brandon Lin, Christopher Prainito and Shannon Su. “We really all did this together and it is so great to be together to celebrate this,” said advanced science research adviser Barbi Frank. “I have had the honor of watching these students since they have been sophomores and to observe them transform into the scientists they have become today is remarkable.”

Luisi’s project, “How Dietary Restriction Affects the Athleticism, Metabolic Rate, and Lifespan of Drosophila melanogaster,” is a culmination for more than a year of work.

“Working alongside my classmates for three years, we got to not only learn about science research, but also learn about ourselves and each other,” Luisi said. “We’ve been editing each other’s papers, presentations, post boards,

Student Leaders Serve As Board Liaisons

There are so many good things happening at Wantagh High School, that it is hard to list them all. But seniors Emma Alexander and Angelina Maciak do a pretty good job during their monthly reports to the board of education and the Wantagh community.

Emma and Angelina, as co-presidents of the General Organization, also serve as the student liaisons to the school board. They have been attending one meeting a month since September and give a report on all the happenings at the high school including athletics, club activities, community service projects, drama and music performances, student achievements and more.

“We do make sure we include everything in our reports,” Emma said, noting that she and Angelina strive to give a well-rounded view of student life.

The pair are involved in numerous clubs, so they already have extensive reports planned out even before getting input from their peers. Both are in Key Club, the Literary Society, Science Olympiad and several honor societies.

Angelina is also a member of Future Business Leaders of America, and Emma is involved in music and theater groups.

Their leadership roles at the high school were cultivated many years ago by joining the student councils at their respective elementary schools. Now, they sit on the auditorium stage every month with the board of education trustees and central office administrators and get to develop a skill that is very important in life – public speaking.

“I think it’s awesome that we get to represent our whole student body,”

Angelina said. “I like that the board involves us and gets the perspective from the students who are in school every day.”

The district has been including student representatives at its monthly meetings for several year. Board of Education President Anthony Greco said he and his fellow trustees greatly appreciate the contributions of the student government leaders.

“The student representatives on our board of education are such a terrific addition to our meetings each month,” he said. “In addition to keeping us apprised of the many wonderful student events taking place, they also help remind us at every meeting of the reason we do this important work: to provide outstanding opportunities for all of our students in the community.”

MacArthur High School Cheerleading Enjoys Successful Season

The General Douglas MacArthur High School cheer team in the Levittown Public School District qualified for the UCA National Competition in Orlando, Florida. They also finished first in the Northeast region, beating out competitors Rocky Point, Mount Sinai and Connetquot.

The MacArthur cheer team has been participating in the national competition since 2010 and has been ranked top 10 in the country multiple times.

They

placed first at UCA’s Empire Regional — the first time in MacArthur history — awarding the team with a bid to nationals and a championship banner to hang in the gymnasium.

The cheer squad finished with a score of 92 out of 100, thanks to a flawless routine that received zero deductions.

The team was also able to host a local competition at MacArthur involving varsity, junior varsity and middle school players from Levittown.

“Setting these big goals

takes work,” said varsity head coach Lisa Nessler.

“These girls practiced four days a week throughout the entirety of summer. They give up their weekend; they miss vacations and family parties — but the reward is sweet.

“Setting these goals isn’t easy,” Ms. Nessler, also a social studies teacher, continued.

“Sometimes there is failure, sometimes there is success. Either way, we’re a family, we learn, we grow, and we keep rising. It’s the journey that makes the athlete.”

Kelly Martin entered the 600m seeded ninth and had breakout race to finish second and her first All-County honors. While the girls were scoring on the track, Sara Manson led them in the field, taking second in long and triple jump, in addition to her winning the 55m hurdles and being named a county champion there as well.

“Sara Manson has been on the team as a middle schooler and she has led by example and performed on a different level, setting the team up for success,” Migliano said.

The 1500m run was led by senior captain Julianna Razza, who finished second overall and freshman Sofia Zampella right on her heels for third, earning both All-County honors.

Carly Curnutt took fifth earning the girls a total of 16 points in that event.

Omana Phillips and Taylor Halvorsen set personal records in the Racewalk, finishing second and third, respectfully.

Each walked over two

minutes faster than their best to earn All-County honors as well.

Julia Baguiao tripled toward the end of the meet starting with the 300m dash. Not only did she set a personal record in that event and take third to be named All-County, she broke a long-standing school record.

“Julia Bagu is tough, driven and hates to lose; even in training,” added Migliano. “I think come spring season we are going to see some fireworks from her when we get back onto the outdoor track.”

“Overall, the girls showed what it meant to be a team and proved how despite perception, track is not an individual sport but a team one,” added Migliano. “They all came together at the right moment for a cause that was bigger than any one of them individually. They all performed for the girl next to them and not themselves and this is what family and team is all about.”

The East Meadow School District is proud to announce that East Meadow High School Wind Ensemble senior Emma Friel was selected to take part in the 2022 All-National Honors Ensembles Concert Band.

This prestigious honor is the culmination of a

designated as an AllState Alternate at this year’s NYSSMA Winter Conference. Friel plans on continuing her musical studies next year at the university level as a music education major and aspires to become a high school band director.

The Calhoun High School girls winter track team won the Nassau County Championship on Feb. 9, capping off one of their most remarkable seasons ever.

After winning their conference by the largest margin in conference history, they one upped that by being the first Calhoun girls track team to ever capture a county championship. They were victorious over perennial champions Valley Stream North and Hewlett high schools.

“The girls jumped out to a fast start a week ago, as Erika Klein won the weight throw, breaking her own school record and earning her first county title,” explained coach Joseph Migliano.

The meet got off to a great start as well with Carly Curnutt earning All-County in the 3000m, followed by Kaitlyn Stibritz and Kate MacNamara taking fifth and sixth, grabbing nine points for the team.

Wantagh Middle School’s theater students are ready to showcase their talents for the community with the upcoming musical production of “Matilda.”

The show, with four performances from March 4-6, is based upon the book

by Roald Dahl.

Sixth grader Hayden Nolan plays the title character. While this is her first show at the middle school, she is already a veteran of the stage with the local children’s theater group at nearby St. Frances de Chantal Church.

“It’s super exciting because this has been a dream of mine forever,” she said of getting the lead in her school music.

Other leads among the cast of 38 include Nick

Lerro as Bruce, Mairead Hill-Hotz as Miss Honey, Marc Walters as Trunchbull and Nick Allen and Becca Bohlert as Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood. An additional 28 students are part of the stage crew.

The students are looking forward to opening night.

Mairead said that the cast has become one big family where everyone supports each other. Nick added that he is ready to make the audience laugh with his character, whose funny lines interrupt serious moments.

Musical numbers include “Revolting Children,” “School Song” and “Bruce.”

The show is directed

by Dr. Kimberly Davis and Kristin Piciullo, with Dr. Davis also serving as

the choreographer. The musical director is Jennifer Alessi and technical design is led by John Vaiano.

Dr. Davis said she chose “Matilda” as this year’s musical because it is a fun show and the students can relate to the characters, many of which are children.

She also said that there is a positive message about celebrating individuality and uniqueness.

Performances are Friday, March 4 at 7 p.m., Saturday, March 5 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., and Sunday, March 6 at 1 p.m. in the Wantagh High School auditorium.

Wantagh To Hold 2022-23 Budget Workshops The Wantagh School District will be offering four budget workshops for all community residents in March and April, as the district prepares its proposed budget for the 2022-23 school year.

There will be three evening workshops on Mondays, March 7, March 21 and April 4, starting at 7 p.m. in Wantagh High School’s south cafeteria.

For those unable to attend the evening sessions, a budget
