Minority Leader Abrahams, Minority Caucus File Legislation To Make Volunteer Firefighters, Ambulance Workers Eligible For Property Tax Exemptions After Two Years Of Service

To ensure that Nassau County’s volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers receive the maximum property tax exemption allowable under a recently amended state law, Nassau County Legislature Minority Leader Kevan M. Abrahams (D – Freeport) and his Minority Caucus colleagues have proudly introduced legislation that will make firefighter/ ambulance workers eligible for property tax exemptions after completing two years of volunteer service.

The previous eligibility threshold was five years of service. On Friday, Jan. 20, the seven members of the Minority Caucus filed legislation that would opt Nassau County into a state law, enacted in December 2022, that allows

The Charity of the Month for March is Canine Companions®

www.canine.org

Canine Companions is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained service dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. Independence shouldn’t be limited to those who look or live a certain way, so they are proud to provide their dogs and support services free of charge to recipients.

Clients come to Canine Companions because of their reputation, the quality of their dogs, the experience of their training sta and the desire to lead a life with greater independence. The organization is proud to have various chapters and training centers across our nation that operate o of these six core values:

Teamwork: They believe in the joyful and transforming power of the partnership between an individual and their dog.

Compassionate Service: They treat everyone they serve with respect and empathy.

Integrity: They do what is right guided by honesty, accountability and sincerity.

Community: They practice inclusion and acceptance to build positive relationships within their diverse community.

Excellence: They conduct ourselves with professionalism in pursuit of the highest standards.

Innovation: They continually pursue new ideas to unleash their greatest potential.

Canine Companions uses Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers and crosses of these two breeds. Most of their dogs come from their selective breeding program, but occasionally donated puppies are accepted if they meet the strict qualification requirements. Their puppies are raised by volunteers who selflessly take them to classes that teach them basic obedience and house manners. When

the puppies are old enough to enter their professional training program, they head to one of their six regional training centers, located in Northern California, Southern California, Texas, Ohio, New York and Florida.

The organization typically places between 325 and 375 service dogs per year. Once a dog has completed professional training, it is ready to be matched with a person with disabilities. The match is made at one of their regional training centers during Team Training, a two-week group class.

During Team Training, students learn to manage the service dog’s behavior, to direct the dog to respond to commands it has learned and to assume responsibility for maintaining the health and well-being of the dog. Each dog can really make all the di erence in the life of its new partner. A Canine Companions service dog can not only open doors, pick up dropped items, turn on the lights and alert its partner of important sounds, but they can also increase confidence and independence.

To learn more about this organization, please visit www.canine.org or call 631.561.0200.

Stay tuned for next week’s article to learn more about their Long Island location, located in Medford, NY and find out how you can get involved!

If your non-profit would like to be featured in this column, please email noellelambert@longislandmediagroup.com for consideration.

volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers to apply for up to a 10-percent exemption on the assessed value of their property (exclusive of special assessments) after completing two years of service.

Volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers must live in the community served by their volunteer organization to qualify for this exemption.

Days after the Minority Caucus filed its legislative proposal, the Majority Caucus re-filed the proposal on Monday, Jan. 23 with all 19 legislators as sponsors, all but guaranteeing passage.

“The Minority Caucus is deeply appreciative of the commitment that our courageous volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers demonstrate as they serve and protect the residents of Nassau County on a daily basis,” Minority Leader Abrahams said. “We are gratified that our proposal appears on track for unanimous approval, and we look forward to providing an incentive that will make Nassau County more affordable for our selfless volunteers and encourage more people to step up and answer the call of community service.”

Summit Lane Students Learn Safety Tips From Canine Unit

Second graders at Summit Lane Elementary School in the Levittown Public School District were ecstatic to receive a surprise visit from members of the MTA Police Department’s Canine Unit.

Second grade classes gathered in the gymnasium and listened to safety tips

from MTA officers who are stationed at busy subway and train stations. They learned to always stay with an adult, how to navigate the platform safely and who to look for if they need help.

As the Canine Unit entered the room, the children could hardly

contain their excitement, but they respectfully stayed in their seats. They learned about the role of the Canine Unit in keeping public transportation safe. At the conclusion of the presentation, students were able to approach and pet the unit’s dog one by one.

Levittown Grads Who Built Northside School Pond Awarded Honorary Life Award

Mepham’s Riley Fried Advances To State Level Of Poetry Out Loud

Wellington C. Mepham High School senior Riley Fried took second place in the Regional Poetry Out Loud Competition on Feb. 3. Fried’s exceptional talent in interpreting and analyzing poetry, combined with her natural public speaking ability, helped her secure this impressive win. Fried will now move on to the New York State competition on March 11 in New York City, where

she will compete against other regional winners from across the state.

“Riley has a natural ability to captivate an audience with her poise and confidence. Her strength in public speaking is often seen on screen through her work with Bellmore-Merrick Broadcasting but watching Riley recite poetry for a live audience was a real treat,” said Nicole Maresca, English teacher and lead teacher for

Poetry Out Loud.

In addition to Fried’s achievement, senior Sidney Florio also made it to the third round of the competition, making her one of only five competitors to advance.

“Sydney has performed in several drama productions on the Mepham stage and is adept at conveying emotion through her voice and actions,” Maresca added.

LEVITTOWN GRADS AWARDED HONORARY LIFE AWARD - Rob Fuentes and Kevin Fuentes, graduates of the Levittown Public School District, received the Honorary Life Award for their construction of the school’s pond. Photo courtesy of Levittown Public Schools

Two graduates of the Levittown Public School District recently gave back to the community by constructing a pond in the courtyard of Northside Elementary School. For their efforts, they were awarded the school’s Honorary Life Award.

The pond, which was completed last school year by Rob Fuentes and Kevin

Fuentes, further beautified the Northside courtyard near the established greenhouse. It serves as a home for the school’s two pet ducks, Tater and Tot, who now enjoy the upgraded living space. The pond features a waterfall over rocks, and more greenery will start to grow once the warmer weather hits. The courtyard is a

beneficial space where students can learn about the importance of caring for animals and plants.

Rob and Kevin, owners of Tranquility Scapes, are graduates of the district and wanted to give back through their locallyowned business. The construction of the pond came at no cost to the district.

LIPA Announces New Community College Scholarship

Officials from the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) joined with representatives from Nassau Community College and Suffolk County Community College to announce a new community college scholarship program.

The LIPA Scholarship is designed to provide education and training for students from households with incomes below the median income of Long Island and the Rockaways (approximately $100,000 for a family of four) living in historically underserved communities.

The LIPA Scholarship is a $350,000 commitment over the next five years to provide 50 full scholarships for students to attend either Nassau Community College or Suffolk County Community College to obtain an associate degree or certificate that will help them pursue a career in the electric utility or clean energy sectors.

This investment is an effort to ensure that our workforce represents all the communities LIPA serves and that all of our customers can participate in the growing career opportunities available in the electric utility and clean energy industry.

Thomas Falcone, Chief Executive Officer of LIPA, said: “Electricity is the clean fuel of the future. Studies predict electricity will provide more than 70 percent of New York’s energy needs by 2050 and that it will be entirely carbon-free. With this growing industry, LIPA’s commitment to fund 50 scholarships at Nassau and Suffolk Community College over the next five years will ensure that our workforce represents all the communities LIPA serves and that all our customers can participate in the fabulous and growing career opportunities available in the electric sector.”

Dr. Maria Conzatti, Interim President of Nassau

Community College, said: “Together with LIPA, Nassau Community College is pleased to meet the workforce development needs of our business partners and the educational aspirations of the Long Island community.”

Dr. Edward T. Bonahue, President of Suffolk County Community College, said: “The Long Island Power Authority’s generous scholarships will help us recruit and sustain students entering the STEM fields, transforming our workforce and our region’s economy. With this support, LIPA joins the college in bridging our promising students from financial need to the high-need, high-wage disciplines that lead to a rewarding career.”

The curricula offered at Nassau Community College and Suffolk County Community College include courses relevant to the work LIPA does to meet the clean energy goals set by New York’s Climate Act, as well as to fulfill LIPA’s mission of providing clean, reliable, and affordable energy to Long Island and the Rockaways.

The LIPA Scholarship will support income-qualified, graduating high school seniors, allowing them to extend their educational development and enter the utility and clean energy sectors. Participation in the LIPA Scholarship will provide graduates with a competitive edge in applying for employment at LIPA and its contractor, PSEG Long Island, who plan to hire hundreds of entry-level workers over the next five years.

This five-year program will provide annual funding for ten full-time, two-year scholarships for low- to moderateincome students who reside in disadvantaged communities, as identified by New York’s Climate Justice Working Group, planning to attend Nassau Community

College or Suffolk County Community College.

Residents of the following communities served by LIPA are eligible for the LIPA Scholarship: Nassau County

Wantagh Student Pianist An Asset To Music Program

If there’s a concert happening in the Wantagh School District, Matthew Lin is probably there tickling the ivories. It is unique for a student to serve as a piano accompanist for school concerts, but the Wantagh High School senior has leant his talents for more than a dozen elementary, middle school and high school performances for the past four years.

In December, Matthew played the piano at five shows – the middle school’s sixth and eighth grade concerts and the high school’s Chorale, Onora Le Voci and wind ensemble performances. He also accompanied all three elementary school choruses for the Long Island Music Festival and last year’s spring concerts, as well as other Wantagh student ensembles. He will be in the pit band for the upcoming spring production of “The SpongeBob Musical.”

His origins as a pianist date back more than a decade. Before he even entered kindergarten, he went to a music store with his mother, who was encouraging him to play the violin. Matthew, however, found himself drawn to the piano. He described the “majesticness” of the instrument and the clear and strong sound that it produces.

Working with a private teacher through the Amadeus Music School and practicing on his own with piano exercises from “Hanon: The Virtuoso Pianist,” Matthew’s skills continued to progress. He was particularly drawn to classical music, and loved playing Chopin’s Waltz No. 1 as a child.

Wantagh choral director

Sameerah Cassidy said during the 2019-2020 school year, she needed a piano accompanist for the winter concert and the band director recommended Matthew, then a freshman. She met with him and gave

TO MUSIC

him 10 pieces of music, which he mastered over the Thanksgiving break. Matthew played for her when school resumed, and he landed the gig.

“He saved the day,” Ms. Cassidy said, adding that Matthew has played such an important role in the district’s music program, even accompanying other students for honors ensemble auditions.

Two years ago, Ms. Cassidy launched a new honors-level chorus class at Wantagh High School, Onora Le Voci. Matthew is enrolled in the class as the student accompanist, a position that was included in the course structure with him in mind.

“The chorus students understand the role that he plays and the sound he helps us create,” Ms. Cassidy said.

Added Matthew, “I’m really grateful that I’m so valued here. I really enjoy working with so many talented individuals. I am overjoyed that I can learn so many different types of music.”

One piece of music that stood out to him from the recent winter concerts was “Keep Your Lamps,” which was performed by the high school chorale. Matthew said it was very fast and intense with unique chord

progressions, but he enjoyed the opportunity to learn and play a different type of music.

Matthew played the clarinet with the band through his freshman year and even earned AllCounty honors, but has since focused on the piano. Using a recording studio in New Jersey, he submits recordings to various international competitions. In the past year, he received second place in the American Protégé International Piano and Strings Competition and a gold medal at the AADGT International Young Musicians Competition, The Passion of Music. Last June, he performed at Carnegie Hall.

In college, he plans to study computer science or software engineering with a minor in music performance. Matthew said that wherever he goes to college, he will reach out to local school districts to see if he can serve as a piano accompanist for concerts. Even if he doesn’t plan to become a professional musician, Matthew said his goal is to be able to play the piano at a level on par with the pros.

“It’s exciting for me that I’ve progressed so much,” he said. “There’s still a path for me ahead to improve.”

North Bellmore Accepting Applications For Pre-K Lottery

The North Bellmore School District is accepting applications for its Universal Pre-Kindergarten program for the 2023-2024 school year. Due to limited spaces available, enrollment will be determined by a lottery drawing. The program is contingent upon state funding.

Children who will be 4 years old by Dec. 1, 2023, and will be eligible to enter kindergarten in September 2024, may participate in the lottery. The program is administered by the North Bellmore School District and is provided by community-based preschools. It is funded by the New York State Education Department through a UPK grant so there is no cost to families.

The district anticipates hosting both half-day

and full-day programs, depending on grant allocations. The half-day program is offered 2 ½ hours per day, five days a week, and the full-day program is offered 5 hours per day, five days a week. Both programs will follow the North Bellmore school calendar. Children are expected to attend every day. Parents cannot choose the school location and transportation is not provided.

The deadline for applications is Friday, March 10. UPK applications are available online at www. northbellmoreschools.org, and at each elementary building from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on school days. For more information, contact Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Janet Pollitt at (516) 9923000, ext. 3002.

Lee Road Students Dazzle At Board Meeting

Lee Road Elementary School students donned their white lab coats and rubber gloves while attending the Feb. 8 Levittown Board of Education meeting to present a STEAM-based project.

Students in 4th and 5th grades in Eileen Vogel, Tina Vrachnas, Pamela Smith and Tina Napoli’s classes showed attendees a glimpse into their Creativity in Science

and 21st Century Skills unit. They discussed how learning through STEAM is both fun and beneficial in giving them skills for the future. Students have engaged in several STEAM activities this year, including building a marble rollercoaster, assembling a “doodle bot,” building a straw rocket and constructing a tower out of marshmallows. They also learned many science-related vocabulary

terms and skills, such as determination, analytical thinking, problemsolving, perseverance and teamwork.

At the end of their presentation, the science equipment came out for 5th graders Casey Walsh and Antonio Zambrano’s liquid works experiment. The gooey material created was handled with assistance by Board President Jennifer Messina.

Levittown Public Schools were a sea of purple on P.S. I Love You Day on Feb. 10, an important day when students and staff spread love, positivity and acceptance.

Levittown schools participate in P.S. I Love You Day every year. The initiative was started in New York and aims to bring awareness to the importance of mental

health. Through positive messages and activities about acceptance, students help decrease bullying while ending the stigma around mental health issues.

This year’s theme, “Love All Your Chapters,” was reflected in the many P.S. I Love You Day activities that students participated in, such as selfie projects in which students shared

what they love about themselves. Middle school students sold purple bracelets and other goodies sporting positive messages while sharing compliments through special projects and throughout the halls. In each of the district’s 10 schools, the importance of loving one another was reinforced and will be continued every day.

Kennedy Cyber Patriot Team Awarded State Championship

The upperclassman Cyber Patriot team at John F. Kennedy High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District was awarded the New York State Championship in the Air Force Association CPXV competition Platinum Tier.

The freshman team was awarded third place in the New York State CPXV Gold Tier.

Established by the Air Force Association in 2009, the CyberPatriot National Youth Cyber Education Program is designed to excite, educate, and motivate students toward careers in cyber security and other science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines critical to the nation’s future.

“This year, three teams of students from Kennedy High School participated in four rounds of six-hour competition events,” explained Rob Soel, a district science/STEM chairperson.

“Our Cougar Cyber Patriots

excelled in the qualifying rounds, demonstrating teamwork, critical thinking skills, and technical knowledge that is key to a successful career in cybersecurity.”

All three teams advanced to the state round and two Kennedy teams earned spots to compete in the national semifinals.

“Our students studied windows and Linux operating systems and completed online coursework in the CISCO Net Academy while learning how to use industry networking software such as Packet Tracer and VMware,” he added.

The 2023 Cougar Cyber Patriots include Tyler Bissoondial, Chris Field, David Greenberg, Dylan Hovell, Richie Ippoliti, Evan Kolberg, Michael Lamaze, Jack Levitt, Gabe Leyderman, Daniel Lin, Jason Lin, Massimo Marino, Mark Prainito, Mason Tso, Leonard Weber, Handsome Zheng and Daniel Zhou.
