Students at Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Center gathered for an evening of healthy competition during the school’s annual student competition on February 8th at the Levittown Memorial Education Center.

Administrators, staff and families watched as students put their talents on full display by demonstrating their acquired skills for attendees, including potential employers and colleges.

GC Tech is a unique school program dedicated to teaching comprehensive career and technical skills, along with qualifying academics, for students enrolled in the Levittown Public Schools and neighboring districts. The program offers courses in the areas of automotive technology, computer animation, construction management, cosmetology,

Exploring Ecosystems As part of the study on ecosystems, fifth-graders in Margaret Gallagher’s class at Saw Mill Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District created models of real live ponds.

During the science investigation, students observed the ways in which organisms live and survive in their ecosystems by interacting with living and non-living elements.

The children created

ecosystems in clear plastic soda bottles using sand, small rocks, water, Elodea plants and snails. They studied the snails for seven days and learned about the differences between consumers and producers.

When I graduated from high school, I was given the noted Dr. Seuss book, “Oh, the Places You’ll Go,” as a symbolic gesture of good luck toward any and all future pursuits. I since came to learn that this particular gift has been somewhat of a tradition for those moving onward and upward in life - no matter the age.

Of course, the places outlined in the magical land of Seuss are not so much literal; but, rather, a figurative representation of the adventures which await those on the brink of adulthood, the endless potential for exploration and the Great Places which exist just over yonder. The poem reads like a veritable how-to, designed to assist in navigating the twists and turns life is sure to reveal in the years to come.

Nearly 20 years beyond this stepping stone, the words

ring just as true: “Step with care and great tact… and remember that Life’s A Great Balancing Act.” Indeed it is.

I recently listened to a podcast which analyzed the age-old query of whether happiness leads to success, or vice versa. Like the chicken/ egg debate, there is of course no concrete answer; however, most research seems to suggest that happiness is the starting point from which the greatest success blossoms. To be in a positive state is to have a productive, constructive mindset, making growth that much easier.

Delving deeper into the topic, it was stated that those who attempt to find that tedious work/life “balance” are often misdirected in their goal. In reality, these elements will never truly exist in the perfect proportion we strive for, as our existence - and all the elements which affect

it - are in a continuous state of flux. Rather, the objective should be to find a place of fulfillment within, making the necessary adjustments along the way as we navigate those same twists and turns predicted by Dr. Seuss all those years ago.

Taking this lesson into a geographic territory, it was recently brought to my attention that the passport I obtained some five years ago is nearly halfway to its expiration date, having been used precisely once on my very first international flight - first flight anywhere, in fact - to the Emerald Isle. Where to next? The fact is, it doesn’t really matter.

Anywhere will do, so long as it brings pleasure and adventure and a newfound sense of discovery.

Your mountain is waiting.

Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem.

In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic.

This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can!

There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance

“It’s an activity that necessitates a great amount of leadership and teamwork skills,” Ms. Matthews indicated.

Teams included the Penn State Nittany Lions, UCLA Bruins, Michigan Wolverines, Maryland Terrapins, Oregon Ducks, North Carolina Tar Heels and Syracuse Orangemen.

Students played basketball, jumped rope, hit the floor for push-ups and sit-ups and came together for various team activities.

Teacher Brian Scott described the competition as one that “promotes camaraderie among the students, as well as sportsmanship and healthy competition,” values that fall in line with the district’s theme “Mind, Body and Heart.”

Boyer used comedy and audience participation to educate students about energy’s ability to make something move or happen.

Bringing students onto the stage, he demonstrated kinetic and potential energy using common items such as a slingshot to propel balls across the room, a hairdryer that inflated a balloon by heating the bottom of a soda bottle, and a singing rod that he rubbed to create music.

At the conclusion of the show, Boyer used the energy of a leaf blower to blow toilet paper off the rolls into the audience.

The fifth-graders were eager to ask Avena questions about Wisdom Lane Middle School, where many will be attending next year. He eased student concerns such as opening lockers and finding classes.

The group also discussed homework, extracurricular activities and phone policies to better prepare students for their transition from elementary to middle school.

Poetry Out Loud is a national arts education program that encourages the study of great poetry by offering educational

Mike Proios, a wellconditioned three-sport athlete and senior at Wellington C. Mepham High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central School District, was recently named to the elite Nassau County Golden 11 team.

The Pirates quarterback, Proios’ football career dates back to when he was a 5-year-old playing on the Bellmore Braves fields.

While he was supposed to be the backup quarterback in his sophomore year, Proios trained and earned

a starting spot instead.

“He has consistently played at a high level,” said Anthony Cracco, Mepham head coach and athletic director. “He helped led the team to our best season in 25 years. We went 8-3, making it to the Nassau County finals.”

Proios earned All-State honors and recently signed with Seton Hill University on a football scholarship.

“The long hours of film and studying have paid off,” Proios posted in a tweet, thanking coach Anthony Cracco. “Thank

you for inspiring me to play football at the collegiate level. Hands down the best coach I’ve ever had.”

He is also a National Honor Society member and plays on Mepham’s basketball and baseball teams.

Giving back is important to Proios who coached a youth football team and helped rebuild his family’s church, Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Merrick, which was damaged in a fire.

The Golden 11 is an honor given to the 11 players who best embody the behavior expected of student-athletes on and off the field, which includes maintaining scholarathlete status and attaining All-County accolades. Only one student-athlete can be nominated from each school and a committee of coaches makes selections from each conference.

The National Football Foundation chooses just 11 athletes from all of Nassau County.

With the winter Olympics on the horizon, Martin Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District devoted a morning to the international celebration. A day before the opening ceremonies were held in Pyeongchang, South Korea, students participated in their own activities including sports, crafts and STEAM challenges.

Following a parade of countries and “torchlighting” ceremony on February 7th, students rotated through stations throughout the school. In the gymnasium, children competed in speed skating

in which they placed paper plates under their feet and raced in a circle.

One classroom featured cross-country skiing, with students stepping onto long wooden boards, grasping strings and working together to get across the room.

STEAM activities included internationalthemed science, technology, engineering, art and math challenges.

Children celebrated France by building models of the Eiffel Tower and Egypt by recreating the pyramids. To honor China, students used marshmallows, toothpicks, tape and index cards to see who could build the biggest

freestanding version of the Great Wall of China.

Principal Leyna Malone said that the purpose of the day was to give students some exercise and allow them to challenge their minds. She explained that the Martin Avenue Olympics were highly anticipated, and the enthusiasm displayed by students and staff made it all worthwhile.

“The spirit of the Olympics is something really special, and we recreated that here at Martin Avenue,” said Ms. Malone. “There was friendly competition through activities with curricular connections.”

Learning through Play “We learn through play,” said Newbridge Road Elementary School Principal Denise Fisher about the North Bellmore School District’s participation in Global School Play Day on February 7th.

All five elementary schools took part in the national initiative supporting unstructured play for children. Activities promoted development of social skills such as cooperation, sharing and good sportsmanship.

At Newbridge Road, Global School Play Day began with all students and teachers dancing to the Cha-Cha Side, followed by schoolwide bingo. Buddy classes partnered up for

unstructured playtime, and teachers swapped classes to play games with children.

Sixth-graders used recycled materials to build games for younger students, such as Isayah Contreras who made a bowling alley using posterboard for the lane and half-filled water bottles for the pins.

“I can let my mind go and do lots of activities with joy and fun,” he said of Global School Play Day. “I can create and explore, and it allows me to think outside of the box.”

At John Dinkelmeyer Elementary School, kindergartners took part in sensory centers exploring materials with different

textures such as foam blocks, streamers and pipe cleaners, while being free to create anything their minds envisioned. Fourthgraders made their own electronic-free arcade games based on Caine’s Arcade, a video of a young boy who makes games out of cardboard.

In Jill Drum’s class, students rotated through various centers, including a slime-making station.

The fifth-graders also made games for students in their second-grade buddy class. One group turned a section of the classroom into an escape room, filled with riddles and clues that would lead children to the exit.

College Commitments

A total of 10 senior student-athletes from Levittown Public Schools’ Division Avenue and General Douglas MacArthur high school recently made college commitments to play their sport of choice at the collegiate level.

Five student-athletes from MacArthur High School will continue to play soccer after graduation.

Students include Kayla Duvenhorst, Farmingdale State College; Joseph Gino, SUNY Maritime; Nicholas Gino, SUNY Old Westbury; Ryan Mehryari, Molloy College and Andrew Sweeney, University of Mary Washington.

At Division Avenue High School, Nicholas Fressle will play baseball at LIU Post, Kara Haga will take her softball talents to Lesley

University, Nora Tracy will join the basketball team at Misericordia University and lacrosse players Lauryn O’Keefe and Amy Rzemieniewski will attend SUNY Farmingdale and Wagner College, respectively.

The district extends its best wishes to these students as they embark on the next chapter of their athletic careers.

Recognized as Reward School

For the second consecutive year, W.T. Clarke High School in the East Meadow School District has been named a Reward School by the New York State Education Department for its continued high academic performance. The high school is one of 155 schools statewide and one of only 24 on Long Island to receive this noteworthy honor by Commissioner of Education MaryEllen Elia.

Each year, NYSED grants Reward School designation

to those schools in the state that rank among the top 20 percent in English language arts and mathematics assessment performance, have a graduation rate above 80 percent, and obtain the most progress and/ or highest achievement in the state without significant gaps in student achievement. This year’s honor was given based on a schools’ performance during the 2016-2017 school year.

Robotics Rises

Soaring to States

For the first time in the Levittown Public Schools’ history, Science Olympiad teams from both Division Avenue and General Douglas MacArthur high school scored top spots at the 2018 Science Olympiad Nassau East Division C Regionals. As a result, both teams qualified for the New York Science Olympiad C Division State Tournament on March 9th and 10th at Le Moyne College.

Students involved in Science Olympiad embrace the various science fields and study the technology behind them. Through hand-on teamwork, they build various models, learn about the science component involved and compete with other schools to showcase their skills.

The team took home the Tournament Champion award, qualifying them

for the VEX Robotics Southern New York State Championship at The Harvey School Fenstermacher Athletic Center in Katonah, New York on March 3rd.

This was the first year that the team of 14 students had sixth-graders join. The team previously won the Judges Award

and Sportsmanship Award at the VEX Robotics Competition Qualifier at Vaughn College with 38 high schools competing against them.

“I am very proud of them,” said team advisor Dave Loveland. “The other coaches were amazed that the students are only in middle school.”

Mid-Year Milestone The 100th day of school was a milestone worth recognizing at Newbridge Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District. Children in all grades participated in various hundred-themed activities on February 13th.

Each kindergartner filled an empty water bottle with 100 of a certain

object, such as beads or paper clips, then placed it in a brown paper bag with clues to help his or her classmates guess what was inside.

The children took 100 steps to see how far they would get within the school and discovered how many times they could write their names in 100 seconds. They also weighed

100 different school supplies like crayons and erasers, and made guesses as to which was heavier.

Fifth-graders worked together to complete various STEAM challenges.

They stacked 100 cups, made bridges out of 100 pennies and index cards, and made chains out of 100 strips of paper.

making it the first year that the students will be heading to the state competition.

At Division Avenue, the regional win marked the tenth consecutive year that the school qualified for the state level tournament.

Both teams channeled their own theme during the regional competition with Division’s as “Heavy Metal” and MacArthur’s as “Go Green or Go Home.”

The students dressed the part as they competed against other schools in different categories.

Division Avenue High School earned medals in 15 of 22 of the events while MacArthur High School earned medals in 16 of 22 of the events.

“The students were extremely excited, after having worked hard all year long,” said MacArthur High School Science

Olympiad co-adviser Dr. David Friedman. “There was a true feeling of accomplishment at the end of the day.”

Gerard Marzigliano, advisor of Division Avenue’s team praised the school’s science department for helping the students develop the necessary tools in the classroom to be successful in Science Olympiad.

“I am very proud of this accomplishment and want to thank all of you for doing an outstanding job in your classes with our students,” he said. “The success our students find in various events come directly from the lessons you teach them. It would not be possible to do this year after year without you keeping expectations high in your classrooms.”

Global Contribution

School supplies, toiletries and small toys are among the items that will be sent to children in Nicaragua courtesy of the North Bellmore School District, where “contributing to the global community” is a central part of its mission.

The annual collection drive, which ran through February 9th, was coordinated by Spanish enrichment teacher Shagufta Jafri and John

Dinkelmeyer Elementary School fifth-grade teacher Maria Regan. Students and staff from the five elementary schools were encouraged to donate items such as notebooks, crayons and coloring books, rulers, soap, toothpaste, brushes and combs, playing cards, jump ropes and travel-size board games.

All the items were brought to Dinkelmeyer, where they were sorted by fifth- and sixth-graders.

The donations will soon be shipped to Nicaragua and handed out by a mission group to needy children and teenagers.

“It’s very important that the students learn to be empathetic, and to realize that they’re so fortunate to have so much,” said Ms. Regan. “To be able to give a tube of toothpaste or a box of crayons means so much for other children.”

niffles, sore throat, fever and aches and pains may accompany a number of illnesses, but during the wintertime such symptoms are typically indicative of influenza.

Throughout much of North America, flu season peaks between December and February. But flu season can occur anywhere from October to March, advises the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The flu is contagious and can sideline people for extended periods of time. The CDC says that each year one in five Americans gets the flu.

Taking steps to fend off the flu can help men and women and the people they routinely come in contact with.

Foods Food can be used to fend off the flu.

Common foods that many people already have in their pantries can be powerful flu-fighters. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection.

A study published in the American Journal of Therapeutics showed that carnosine, a compound found in chicken soup, can help strengthen the body’s immune system and help fight off the flu in its early stages.

Flu shot and medications Annual flu shots administered in advance of flu season can help protect people and their families from getting the flu. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says that, in select situations, antiviral medications — which are usually prescribed to treat the flu and lessen symptoms — can reduce the chance of illness in people exposed to influenza.

Many over-the-counter medicines can alleviate symptoms of the flu, but cannot fend it off.

Stop germ proliferation Germs can be spread easily between persons through direct contact and indirect contact with surfaces sick individuals have touched. Doctors recommend staying home for at least 24 hours after a flu-induced fever has dissipated. Well individuals should avoid contact with sick people.

Frequent hand-washing with soap and water can stop germs from spreading.

When soap and water is not available, alcohol-based hand sanitizers can help.

People also should avoid touching their eyes, noses and mouths after being in public places or around someone who is ill.

Rest and restore Those who feel symptoms coming on should begin drinking more liquids to keep the respiratory system hydrated and make mucus less viscous. Remember to get adequate sleep, as a tired body cannot effectively fight the flu virus.

People of all ages should take steps to protect themselves from the flu.

erms have gotten a somewhat undeserved reputation. For decades, people have done what they can to avoid these unseemly organisms, thinking that exposure to germs is the single-best way to get and remain sick. Certainly, there are germs that a person would be wise to avoid.

However, not all germs must be avoided.

Although they’ve helped treat illnesses, these drugs have enabled the organisms they’re meant to destroy to adapt to them, making the drugs less effective. Some bacteria are even resistant to certain antibacterial drugs. The CDC says each year in the United States at least two million people become infected with bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics — with at least 23,000 people dying as a result of these infections.

People frequently overlook good bacteria in an effort to eradicate bad bacteria, and that can have serious detriments.

Unfortunately, the “antibacterial” products available for cleaning and medicines used for treating bacterial illnesses do not discriminate between good and bad germs. They simply eradicate them all.

Heathline says that this can create an imbalance of bacteria in the body that may lead to harmful bacteria taking over.

Harmful bacteria also may evolve to resist common treatments because of the overuse of antibacterial and antimicrobial medicines and products.

Germs are tiny organisms that can enter the body through open cuts, the mouth, the nose and the eyes. Germs are found all over the world. The four main types of germs include bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa. Bacteria are a type of germ that often get a bad rap but actually may have benefits that outweigh their negatives.

Bacteria are tiny, one-celled creatures that get nutrients from their environments to live. In some instances, that environment is the human body. Bacteria can reproduce inside and outside of the body. While bacteria that cause repeated infections might be considered bad, there actually are a host of good bacteria. Such bacteria help people digest food and protect against gastrointestinal upset,

Various medical sources urge that regular handwashing with plain soap is enough for cleansing. Consuming foods with naturally occurring helpful organisms, such as yogurt, chocolate, feta cheese, pickles and dark chocolate, can help increase the levels of good bacteria in the body. Taking a probiotic supplement also may help, although researchers at the Cleveland Clinic report that there is not enough proof to say for sure.

People should speak with their doctors before taking probiotics or other steps to increase bacteria to make sure they are a wise decision for each individual.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that antimicrobial agents have been used for the last 70 years to treat patients with infectious diseases.

How to avoid muscle soreness

Those who find themselves routinely battling muscle soreness can employ the following tactics to feel better and enjoy the fruits of their labors in the gym:

Listen to your body. Daily exercise can greatly benefit long-term health, but it’s important that men and women listen to their bodies, paying attention to any signs that it might be time for a break. Each person is different, but exercise aficionados who recognize any abnormal signs such as unexplained fatigue or cramps may need to take a day off. Bodies need time to recover after a workout.

Get adequate sleep. Getting enough sleep provides recovery time. The National Sleep Foundation recommends that adults between the ages of 18 and 64 years of age get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. The NSF recommends adults 65 and older get between seven and eight hours of sleep per night..

Don’t overdo it. Pushing a body too hard increases a person’s risk of injury or illness. Muscles that are overtaxed will very likely begin to feel a type of pain known as delayed onset muscle soreness, or DOMS. The American College of Sports Medicine notes that any type of activity that places unaccustomed loads on muscle may lead to DOMS, but activities such as strength training exercises, walking down hills, jogging, step aerobics and jumping are known examples of contributors to DOMS. Such activities should not necessarily be avoided, but it’s important that men and women not push themselves to the point of overexertion when performing them.

Stay hydrated. Muscle soreness may appear if men and women are not drinking enough water before, during or after their workouts. A dehydrated body’s muscles do not have enough electrolytes, and that can be contributing to the feelings of soreness some exercise enthusiasts feel.

Drink lots of water throughout the day, and don’t forget to bring a water bottle along to the gym when working out.

Muscle soreness can be painful and difficult to deal with. But the solution to address such soreness is oftentimes very simple.

Discomfort due to PAD usually occurs when a person is walking or exercising, because the muscles are not getting enough blood during these activities to meet their needs, says the American Heart Association. Those with diabetes may confuse pain with neuropathy, and the elderly may think pain from PAD is a normal sign of aging and stiffness.

According to new research published by the American Heart Association, eating more fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of developing PAD, which affects an estimated 8.5 million people

in the United States alone. Researchers examined dietary data from roughly 3.7 million men and women, with an average age of 65. Approximately 6.3 percent of the subjects had PAD, and 29.2 percent indicated they ate three or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day. The discovery was those who reported eating three or more daily servings of fruits and vegetables had an 18 percent lower risk of PAD than those who reported eating less of these foods. The association between fruit and vegetable consumption and lower PAD risk remained even after accounting for age, gender, race, smoking status and various cardiovascular risk factors.

Saturated fats, trans-fats and sodium can contribute to the formation of plaques that lead to PAD. Replacing these foods with more vegetables and fruits that are naturally lower in saturated fats can help, as can increasing dietary fiber consumption. One way to incorporate these types of foods is to adhere to a Mediterranean diet, which offers high proportions of legumes, fruits, vegetables; moderate amounts of fish and dairy; and limited meat and meat products.

Peripheral artery disease can be a warning sign of cardiovascular trouble.

Altering one’s diet may help naturally prevent or treat this condition.

Safe ways to deal with sinus pressure S

congestion and drainage concerns, people may try certain strategies that include flushing the sinuses and thinning the mucus. It is imperative to use safe flushing methods to keep the sinuses healthy.

When the sinuses are working properly, mucus will drain into the nasal passages or out the back of the throat. Most of this drainage goes unnoticed.

However, the American Sinus Institute says that factors such as allergies, illness, weather changes, dehydration and dry air can make the sinus mucus thicker and drainage more difficult.

This is when problems like infection, stuffiness or throat irritation may occur.

Neti pots are among the more popular methods to flushing sinuses. These small teapot-like devices with elongated snouts have become a fixture in many medicine cabinets. Because they are drugfree alternatives, they can be handy for those worried about antihistamines making them drowsy or reacting with other drugs. Neti pots and other nasal irrigation systems use saline to moisten and clear out nasal passages to promote drainage of sinus cavities. However, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, using these devices improperly can increase one’s risk of infection.

CBS News says that neti pots have even been linked to the deadly Naegleria fowleri, which is otherwise known as the “braineating” amoeba.

only use previously boiled, sterile or distilled water to irrigate. Tap water is not adequately filtered, says the FDA, and may contain low levels of organisms that can stay alive in nasal passages and potentially cause serious infections.

Those who are concerned about nasal irrigation safety may be wise to skip neti pots and use pre-packaged, sterile saline solutions that are bottled for the purpose of alleviating congestion.

However, when prepared water is used in a clean neti pot or other device, these methods can be perfectly safe.

Sinuses can get clogged for many reasons. To free up breathing, people are urged to consult their physicians to learn more about how to safely irrigate their nasal passages.

epetitive behaviors, depression, anxiety, compulsions and even phobias are just a few of the mental health issues millions of people across the globe deal with every day. Symptoms of these conditions may range from mild to debilitating.

The World Health Organization says that one in four people in the world will be affected by mental or neurological disorders in their lives. The Mayo Clinic says CBT talk therapy is performed in a structured setting, with a limited number of sessions. CBT identifies negative thinking so that challenging situations can be viewed more clearly and perceptions changed. While it is a tool in treating mental health disorders, anyone can benefit from CBT, especially those looking to cope with stress or other hurdles.

Mental health is not something people may feel comfortable discussing.

Problems may go untreated for years, and some individuals may use selfmedicating behaviors such as drinking alcohol or using illegal drugs to alleviate their symptoms. Others continue to persist with illnesses when they do not have to.

Cognitive behavioral therapy is one of the more successful methods to address mental health issues.

Cognitive behavioral therapy was developed by psychiatrist Aaron Beck in the 1960s. Beck was doing psychoanalysis at the time and discovered there was a link between thoughts and feelings. Beck discovered people weren’t always aware of automatic thoughts that popped up in their minds, particularly those negative in nature. By identifying these thoughts, a client could overcome certain difficulties.

The National Association of CognitiveBehavioral Therapists defines CBT as a general term for a classification of therapies with certain similarities. It does not exist as a distinct therapeutic technique. CBT is a short-term, goaloriented psychotherapy treatment that takes a practical form to problem-solving, advises Psych Central. The power is in the hands of the person engaging in the therapy. The therapist simply provides the ideas to get started.

CBT is used to treat a wide range of issues, including insomnia, anxiety, depression, alcohol abuse, relationship problems and more. The process involves

Kindergartners at Merrick’s Chatterton School celebrated their 100th day of school as if they have been around for 100 years – literally.

Students in Denise Kalos’s, Patricia Kelleher’s and Robin Shultz’s classes came in dressed as centenarians.

Some came with canes,

others wearing their robes, and a couple brought their Life Alert devices. One oldtimer even remembered to bring in his meds.

The would-be senior citizens mustered enough strength for a brief parade through the school hallways. Afterwards, they convened in the school’s

all-purpose room, where they rotated through activity stations, building towers from 100 Solo cups, Duplo Lego structures from 100 pieces, puzzles from 100 pieces and more.

They also made 100th day hats and even performed 100 repetitions of exercise.

Congratulations to New York’s rising star athlete, Michael Lantino, for claiming Bronze at the 2018 U.S. Open International Championships in the High School Division!

The U.S. Open is the largest international open championship in the world, bringing in athletes from around the globe. Michael competed in a tough 15-17

division comprised of 25 of the world’s best Taekwondo athletes. He won his preliminary matches against Canada and USA fighters, and lost a tough match to a current USA National Team member from California.

Michael Lantino, a Long Island resident, has been training under the supervision of Ultimate

Champions Taekwondo Master Soongwon Kang and Master Andrew Oh. He trains six days a week, a total of 20 hours; on top of this, he maintains an A average and is on the Principal’s Honor Roll!

“Michael is a great listener and hard worker.

He has the work ethic and mindset to become a champion in the near future,” says Master Andrew Oh, who coached him at the championship in Las Vegas.

This is the second international medal of Michael’s career and next, he is looking forward to going to the National Team Trials. Superintendent of Schools John McNamara thanked the teachers on behalf of the district’s students for their “service and all the

lives they have touched.”

The district congratulates the following retirees: Gertrude Batcher, middle school science teacher; Patricia Beary, high school art teacher; Lydia Calabrese, high school science teacher; Jennifer deLyra, high school social studies teacher; Mindy Dragovich, high school music teacher; Richard Hansen,

elementary education teacher; Victor Heepe, middle school technology education teacher; and Geraldine Marten, high school science teacher.

In addition, the district congratulated head custodian Ronald Hunter and cleaner Arthur Hendrickson, who announced their retirement.

Extreme Weather Fourth-grade classes at Birch School in Merrick recently gave third-graders a lesson on the weather and how Mother Nature can play havoc in our lives.

Teams in each class collaborated on multimedia

extreme-weather projects, demonstrating the devastating effects of earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, tsunamis, wildfires and more, and how these weather events arise. Students used digital

presentations, poster boards, and hands-on models and experiments to illustrate their points and engage their pupils. Many provided handouts as well.

Richard Russo has been named the new director of facilities for the North Bellmore School District.

He will be responsible for the upkeep of the district’s buildings and grounds, supervise the custodial and maintenance staff, and coordinate with contractors performing work at the schools.

Mr. Russo most recently served as the head

custodian at Herricks High School, directing the daily cleaning and maintenance of a 218,000-square-foot building by 13 employees.

He also was responsible for budgeting and ordering supplies, operating the building’s heating system and scheduling large maintenance and repair projects. Prior to that, he worked as a head custodian in the Massapequa School

Students throughout Northside Elementary School participated in the “Valentine’s for Vets” program originally initiated by Nassau County Executive Thomas Gulotta.

The schoolwide project allowed students to design decorative cards glued with

paper hearts, flowers, lace and beads. Many colored designs of balloons, American Flags, rainbows and incorporated creative drawings.

The students included kind words and poems of pride, support, gratitude and remembrances for

the veterans. The cards were personally picked up by Hempstead Town Councilman Dennis Dunne and will be distributed to hospitalized servicemen and women throughout Nassau County.
