Frankie was my first official family member. Not the family I was born into, but the family I would create on my own. He was there before my marriage and before my son. At one point in time, it was just me and Frankieboy. When my son was born, we hemmed and hawed about how Frankie may react to a new baby in the house. Would he behave?

Would we have to worry? From the moment we brought our son home from the hospital, Frankie took on the role of pseudo-nanny (yes, like in Peter Pan); watching over the crib, alerting us when the baby was crying, and gently laying down next to our newborn son when he took his naps. It was astonishing; even more so, since Frankie-boy was not exactly known for exemplary behavior.

In fact, he flunked out of dog obedience school. True story.

As my son grew, it was so much fun to watch the two of them play together and bond. Rolling in the grass, playing ball or fetch, and

running around the house or the yard. It would always bring a smile to my face.

Now, at fourteen, Frankie is getting on in years as my son is getting stronger and stronger and hitting his stride. I know there will come a time when Frankie is no longer with us, and it is hard to imagine. We still keep him running for exercise and we love him up as much as we can.

I will always be grateful to him for teaching me how to care for another living being back when it was just me and him.

These days, there is another dog in the fold, our Pitbull mix, Boris. To see this little Shih Ztu and large Pitbull get on together is a riot. They vacillate between rivalry and playfulness.

Add my two favorite horses, Kingston in Melville, New York, and Lucky the beautiful Arabian, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, into the mix and I just can’t imagine a life without animals around me. I am so glad that my son is growing up experiencing the joy that animals bring.

Vegetarian Reuben Sandwich

This Vegetarian Reuben Sandwich is a fun take on the traditional Jewish-style favorite, but swaps out fatty corned beef for stir-fried veggies!

"You still get that flavor and texture you would with a regular Reuben, but you can enjoy it with less guilt because this version is packed with veggies," shares Patrick.

Rinse and dry pan and then add nondairy butter to coat pan. Place two slices of rye bread in pan, cover each slice with two slices of swiss cheese each, cover on medium heat and grill until cheese is melted.

What You Will Need

1 Pack of Portabello Mushrooms 1 Red Onion 1 Box/Bag of Baby Spinach Leaves Non-dairy Butter Substitute Swiss Cheese Small Bag of Sauerkraut (drained) Seedless Jewish-style Rye Bread Marie's Thousand Island Dressing Large Frying Pan/Skillet

Remove swiss cheese covered bread and plate the slices, with each slice facing up. Spread one or two tablespoons of Thousand Island Dressing onto each slice. Scoop sauerkraut onto each slice above dressing. Lastly, scoop drained veggie mixture onto bread and close sandwich.

Preparation Combine diced portobello mushrooms, spinach leaves and sliced onion into a frying pan that has 1/4 cup water at the bottom. Trun on high until stove gets going. Then reduce heat to low

The Joy Animals Bring Does anything else even need to be said? Animals bring us so much joy, unconditional love, centeredness and clarity.

Growing up, my parents were “not animal people” as they would often remind me at the mere mention of wanting a dog.

I never experienced the joy and responsibility of having a pet when I was growing up. As a result, it just wasn’t on my radar as a kid, or even in my early twenties. At the age of twenty-nine, I found myself newly single, living in New York City and yearning for something or someone to care for other than myself. Without overthinking it, I adopted a two month old Shih Ztu and brought him home. With no idea of how to take care of a dog, I stumbled into a pet shop where I was loaded down with puppy food, vitamins, wee wee pads, a bed, a brush, food/water bowls and just about every other accoutrement you can think of.

I can remember the first time I let this pup run loose in my tiny studio apartment. He was a ball of energy; a little white pouf ball of love as he snuggled up close in my

“Helping Both Ends of The Leash” Paws of War is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that trains and places shelter dogs to serve and provide independence to our U.S. military Veterans who suffer from the emotional effects of war. In turn, each V e t e r a n can experience the therapeutic and unconditional love that only a companion animal can bring! Since 2014, Paws of War has supported over 100 Veterans with service dogs rescued from kill shelters.

This organization relies heavily on devoted volunteers to continue providing their services. With such a small staff, Paws of War depends on the generosity of volunteers to support their fundraising efforts, to provide support to veterans and to help out with their dogs.

Award-Worthy Journalism East Meadow High School seniors in Daniel Vogelsberg’s journalism class, along with members of The Jet Gazette, attended the Adelphi University Press Day and Quill Awards on February 6th. Four of the paper’s contributors were honored with awards.

The Right Foods Can Fight Inflammation T he human body and its immune system excels at fighting foreign invaders like bacteria and viruses.

Signaling chemicals called interleukins tell cells whether they are needed to fight illness or they should wait in the wings.

While these immune defenders are doing their jobs, soreness, fatigue and swelling can occur — the natural side effects of an immune system response — but will soon dissipate.

However, many people deal with immune systems that are consistently revved up, even when no invaders are present.

This is the problem with many chronic diseases and immune system dysfunction. These include: tomatoes, olive oil, green leafy vegetables and cruciferous vegetables; nuts, like almonds and walnuts; fatty fish, berries, avocados, green tea, peppers, grapes, turmeric and dark chocolate.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease accounts for nearly 25 percent of all deaths in the United States each year.

Such statistics are disconcerting, but they can serve as a wake-up call that compels people to prioritize their heart health.

Fortunately, heart disease is often preventable, and people can employ various strategies to reduce their risk.

If you smoke, stop smoking right now.

One of the best things to do to protect the heart is to stop smoking. The Heart Foundation indicates that smoking reduces oxygen in the blood and damages blood vessel walls. It also contributes to atherosclerosis, or a narrowing and clogging of the arteries. Smoking is, essentially, a fast track to heart disease.

Eat healthy fats. When eating, choose polyunsaturated and unsaturated fats and avoid trans fats as much as possible. One study found that young and middle-age adults who regularly slept seven hours per night had less calcium in their arteries (a sign of early heart disease), compared to those who slept five hours or less, or those who slept nine hours or more. Your heart craves a level of homeostasis to stay healthy.

Adopt healthy eating habits. Changes to your diet, including eating more fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein, can help you lose and maintain a healthy body weight, improve your cholesterol levels and reduce blood your pressure — leading to a healthier heart.

Depression is a common mental disorder that, according to the World Health Organization, affects more than 300 million people across the globe. The WHO notes that despite the fact that there are known and highly effective treatments for depression, fewer than half of those suffering from depression receive such treatments. The National Sleep Foundation recently updated its sleep recommendations per age group to include categories “may be appropriate” and “not recommended.” This includes a range of hours that may be adequate for certain adults. Adults between the ages of 26 and 65 are advised to get seven to nine hours of sleep per evening.

However, six hours or 10 hours also may be acceptable. People over the age of 65 need roughly seven to eight hours of sleep each night, though between five and six hours also may be fine. Generally speaking, anything under five hours is not recommended based on data reviewed by sleep experts.

Explore Benefits of HIIT Fitness T here are new workout programs popping up in fitness centers around the U.S. that are allowing fitness-minded individuals to test their mettle. Recently, one of the more popular fitness regimens is HIIT, and it’s probably available at a fitness center near you.

HIIT is an acronym for High Intensity Interval Training. The American College of Sports Medicine says HIIT held steady among the top fitness trends for 2017 and 2018. The crux of HIIT workout routines are sustained, intense exercise followed by active recovery periods. WebMD says that HIIT can be used with any type of popular cardio workout, including rowing, jumping rope, speed walking, stair climbing, and more. Many gyms also build programs around HIIT that may include “boot camp” type workouts that utilize equipment or exercises using people’s own body weight to burn calories.

HIIT workouts can be effective at boosting your metabolism and helping people burn calories faster. They also help to develop physical endurance. The science behind the workouts has to do with EPOC, or excess post-exercise oxygen consumption. The fitness lifestyle resource Daily Burn says that HIIT will help burn more fat and calories than regular steady workouts because EPOC\0x2008 is an oxygen shortage in the body that occurs during the intense portions of the HIIT workouts.

During recovery, the body will ask for more oxygen, creating an after burn and a metabolic disturbance. The fitness guide, Fitness Blender, states that the intense training will result in the body burning calories at a higher rate for up to 48 to 72 hours after exercising. This means that the benefits of HIIT training continue even while you are, say, relaxing on the couch watching your favorite Netflix show later on that day. This type of workout regimen is especially good for those in relatively good shape, who need to drop a large amount of weight relatively quickly. For example, a new mother looking to drop

her baby weight.

People may see greater results by doing HIIT workouts three times a week for half of the duration than they would if they were performing more typical workouts more frequently. For those whose schedules are already jam-packed, HIIT can be a more efficient way of exercising.

HIIT requires a strong baseline fitness lev-

el, so beginners or those who have been out of the gym for some time are urged to start slowly. Also, since HIIT causes high demand on the heart and respiratory systems, it is essential to discuss the regimen with a doctor to find out if HIIT is a smart choice depending on your personal medical history. A typical HIIT training session lasts about 30 minutes. Workouts are performed at 80 to 90 percent of a person’s maximal heart rate, which is the number of times the heart will beat in a minute without overexerting itself. Recovery periods are not entirely rest. They tend to be shorter than active periods, and come in at around 40 to 50 percent of the maximal heart rate.

In essence, a lower intensity workout as “rest.” The workout will alternate between the working and recovery periods.

Students in Patricia King’s fourth-grade class at the East Meadow School District’s Bowling Green Elementary School have been selected as Kidsday reporters for the Newsday’s Kidsday Class of the Week.

Along with Kidsday editor Pat Mullooly, students wrote and edited articles to be featured in Newsday’s Class of the Week on June 15 and June

17-22. Mr. Mullooly visited Ms. King’s classroom to help the young reporters brainstorm ideas for their articles as well as to advise them on problems sent in by other Kidsday classrooms. Students were asked to come up with five solutions for each problem presented by Mr. Mullooly.

As part of the project, four students also had the opportunity to attend the

New York Tennis Open at Nassau Coliseum on Feb. 9. Students Platonas Demosthenous, Phoebe Falk, Daniel Guevara and Ella Jacobs had interviewed tennis pros Andy Roddick and Jim Courier.

The district looks forward to seeing these talented reporters appear in Newsday in June.

Celebrating Love Through Music Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Winthrop Avenue School fourthgraders celebrated the concept of love during two Feb. 8 Celebration of Music concerts.

Under the direction of music teacher Maria Martucci and choreographer Mallory Aronoff, the Bellmore students sang a milieu

of songs about love and respect.

The students’ dedication and team work showed as the vocalists performed a medley of love songs including “You Are My Heart,” “You Are My Sunshine,” “No Mountain High Enough” and “You’ll Be in My Heart.”

Play Day Spans Decades Classrooms at Martin Avenue Elementary School were filled with board games, blocks and toys on February 6th as students discovered that learning takes place in many forms.

Schools throughout the North Bellmore School District celebrated Global School Play Day with highenergy activities.

The theme at Martin Avenue was “Play Through the Decades.” Each grade represented a different decade from the 1950s to the 2000s and students planned activities that corresponded to that era.

They were also encouraged

to wear attire that matched their time period.

Hula hoops were a prime attraction in the 1960s room. As children entered the 1990s, they could play with Barbie dolls are enjoy board games popular then such as Connect 4, Guess Who, Hangman and Jenga. One game that had students twisting and turning was found in many rooms as Principal Leyna Malone noted, “Twister spans the decades.”

Global School Play Day began with all students gathering in the cafeteria for a dance party. Ms. Malone played music from

Elvis Presley’s “Jailhouse Rock” to A-ha’s “Take on Me” to the Spice Girls’ “Spice Up Your Life” as students moved along to the beat. The room was then transformed into a free play where children had access to cardboard boxes and craft materials to make their own toys and games.

“Play is not just fun and games,” Ms. Malone said, adding that Martin Avenue students joined at least a half-million other children around the world in celebrating the day. “Play actually helps you learn.”
