Extremely Cold Temperatures Can Cause Serious Problems For Your Pets Make sure your pet has a collar with identification. Snow can be disorienting for an animal and it is easy for them to get lost.

Keep space heaters away from where animals can get to them. They provide a risk for the animal to get burned and for them to be knocked over, causing a fire.

Dogs and cats can quickly experience frostbite (especially ears and paws) and hypothermia. Symptoms of hypothermia include Severe lethargy, decreased appetite, decreased responsiveness, low body temperature, discolored skin – especially red or black extremities.

If you have chickens,

especially those with longer beards or combs, they are also susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia. Please use insulated walls and chicken coop heaters.

If you use ice melt on your driveway or walkway, this can be extremely painful for dogs who walk through it. If your dog has walked on it, immediately wipe you their paws with luke warm water after. Please note, a good alternative is pet friendly ice melt!

Also, pet boots can be great way to keep your dog safe.

Lastly, bang on the hood of your car and check for cats who may have climbed under your car for warmth.

Most pets are not bred to withstand temperatures below freezing, and even those that are if not acclimated to the cold are at risk. When is it too cold? A good rule of thumb is, if its too cold for you to be outside without a coat, it’s also too cold for your pet.

Below are some things to keep in mind regarding the safety of your pet: Never leave your dog unattended in a car. Cars turn into freezers very quickly. Never warm your car up in the garage, this can trap carbon monoxide and kill people and pets in minutes.

Students at Levy Lakeside Elementary School recently welcomed a special visitor into their classrooms, Holocaust survivor Marion Blumenthal Lazan. During a virtual assembly, Lazan provided her first-hand account of the Holocaust while delivering an important message in tolerance, diversity and inclusion.

In a recent interview with Lester Holt of NBC Nightly News, Lazan expressed that it was her legacy to ensure that the traumatic events of the Holocaust are never forgotten.

For more than 20 years, she has traveled to schools to denounce stereotyping and encourage students to use their inner strength to make the world a better place.

“I always end my talks with the admonition

to be good and kind to one another, regardless of religious belief, color of the skin or national origin,” Lazan said.

But taking steps to protect one’s mental health also is vital to a long, productive life.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services notes that positive mental health and mental wellness can have a profoundly positive impact on a person’s life. Positive mental health can help people realize their full potential, cope with the stresses of life and make meaningful contributions to their communities.

What can I do to protect my mental health?

Learning to recognize the early warning signs of mental health problems can help prevent such problems from escalating and compel people to seek help. The DHHS advises anyone

Fresh Herbs That Can Reduce Your Reliance On Sodium Salt has long been used to add flavor to people’s favorite foods. In fact, the use of salt as a means to preserving foods and adding flavor to recipes dates back to ancient times and has led to countless conflicts ever since.

According to History. com, wars over access to salt reserves in China are believed to have been fought as early as 6,000 B.C. Though that shows just how valuable salt has been throughout much of

human history, it doesn’t indicate the negative effects that can result from diets that feature excessive amounts of sodium.

The American Heart Association notes that sodium plays an essential role in the human body by regulating the kidneys and helping to control the body’s fluid balance.

Sodium also helps send nerve impulses and affects muscle function. However, excessive amounts of sodium can compromise heart health. The AHA notes that excessive amounts of sodium in the bloodstream pulls water into the blood vessels, increasing the total volume of blood within them. As more blood flows through blood vessels, blood pressure increases. Over time, that can adversely affect blood

vessels and speed up the build-up of plaque that can block blood flow. Higher blood pressure forces the heart to work harder and increases a person’s risk for heart disease.

So what about sodium, a mineral so valued, and indeed vital to human existence, that it’s led to wars and created countless devotees in kitchens over the centuries? If it’s flavor cooks are aiming for, it’s possible to reduce reliance on sodium and increase the use of fresh herbs without sacrificing flavor. Such a transition can improve heart health and introduce a host of new flavors at meal time.

Particularly in small town neighborhoods within the Town of Hempstead, public libraries serve to enrich community members’ lives through cultural and educational experiences, providing access to information and making available a huge collection of books, music, films and more for children, teens and adults.

The COVID-19 relief funds – totaling over $340,259 – will help libraries continue providing essential programs and services to the community, and help reimburse unbudgeted expenses incurred during the pandemic. Public Library, Hempstead Public Library, Peninsula Public Library, Baldwin Public Library, Rockville Centre Public Library, Uniondale Public Library, West Hempstead Public Library, Island Trees Library, Levittown Public Library, Elmont Public Library,

Franklin Square Public Library, North Bellmore Public Library, Merrick Library, Seaford Public Library and Wantagh Public Library.

“Our public libraries have worked tirelessly to continue serving the community over the past year, but the

pandemic measures include UV-lighting to disinfect books and printed materials, protective plexiglass and personal protective equipment.

“Libraries are important community resources that have been hit hard during the pandemic, and we are proud to provide this grant funding to help them recover,” said Senior Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby. Added Councilman Bruce Blakeman, “We are grateful for the opportunity to give back to local libraries that have provided so much to our community.”

“No one could have anticipated the impact that COVID-19 would have on libraries and so many other aspects of our daily lives, and these relief funds will go a long way to helping them get back on their feet,” said Councilman Anthony D’Esposito. Added Councilman Dennis Dunne, Sr., “Libraries provide essential programs and services to the community.

“Libraries are so much more than brick-and-mortar buildings. It was a no-brainer to utilize COVID funds to help them during these difficult times,” said Councilman Tom Muscarella. “I thank Senator Schumer for securing the federal CARES grant for the Town of Hempstead, which makes community outreach programs like this one possible,” concluded Supervisor Clavin. “No one in our town was spared from the impacts of this pandemic and the financial toll it has taken. We are proud to be able to provide this funding to our neighborhood libraries so they can continue serving the residents of Hempstead Town.”

The Importance Of Rest Regular exercise has been linked to a host of health benefits. People who exercise regularly can lower their risk for chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes, and routine exercise can improve mood and potentially delay the onset of cognitive decline.

As vital as physical activity is to a healthy lifestyle, there is such a thing as too much exercise.

According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, rest is an important part

of training. Without ample rest, the body does not have time to recover before the next workout. That lack of rest not only adversely affects performance, but also increases a person’s risk for health problems, including injuries that can sideline athletes for lengthy periods of time.

Committed athletes may have a hard time recognizing when they are pushing themselves too hard, and the line between perseverance and overdoing it can be thin. Many athletes credit their ability to push themselves mentally and physically with helping them

achieve their fitness goals and thrive as competitors. But it’s vital that athletes learn to recognize the signs that suggest they’re

exercising too much.

The USNLM notes that the following are some signs of overdoing it with an exercise routine.

• An inability to perform at your established level • Requiring longer periods of rest between workout sessions • Feeling tired • Feeling depressed • Experiencing mood swings or irritability • Difficulty sleeping • Feeling sore muscles or heavy limbs • Suffering overuse injuries such as runner’s knee, achilles tendinitis, shin splints, and plantar fasciitis • Loss of motivation • Getting more colds • Unintended weight loss • Feelings of anxiety The USNLM urges anyone experiencing these symptoms to rest

completely for between one and two weeks.

After that period of rest, the body should be fully recovered.

However, if any of these issues linger after two weeks, seek the advice of a health care provider.

A health care provider may recommend additional rest and/ or conduct a series of tests to determine if an underlying issue is causing any of the aforementioned symptoms.

Rest is as vital to an effective exercise regimen as proper technique, ensuring the body has ample time to recover and reducing the risk of overuse injuries.

Levittown Educator Honored With Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award Andrea Mortillaro, a special education teacher from Wisdom Lane Middle School in the Levittown Public Schools, was selected as one of 15 individuals to receive the 2020 Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award. Each year, the program honors school administrators, school board members, teachers, organizations and more for their profound effect on public education in Nassau County.

Mrs. Mortillaro was one of two teachers to be honored in the 2020 award program for her commitment to the students of Levittown.

She has worked at Wisdom Lane Middle School since 2003 and has been an integral member of the school community.

“She is a kind, caring, educator who exemplifies the district motto of Success for Every Student,” said Wisdom Lane Principal John

Avena. “Her teaching style is student centered which helps her make life-long connections with her students.”

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there will be no in-person Education Partner Awards Gala.

However, Mrs. Mortillaro will join her fellow award recipients for a virtual celebration on April 13.

The musical follows the bittersweet but inspiring story of a group of students as they commit to four years of grueling artistic and academic work in order to achieve their dream of “hitting the heights” and putting their “name in lights.” With insight

and humor, the show explores the issues that confront many young people today, including identity, self-worth, and perseverance.

In “Fame Jr.,” the characters discover it takes much more than talent to achieve their goals. They must find

The Charity of the Month for February is the

Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition c h e m o treatments, repeated lengthy emergency room visits, in her hospital rooms sleeping in a bedside chair and finally caring for her at home during hospice.

I felt a deep void when my wife of 53 years was gone but I had to move on somehow, so I searched the internet for ways I might help others going through the same hardship and happened across Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) in need of volunteer office help. Since I was a C.P.A., I thought I’d give it a try and three years later I’m a member of BBCC’s allvolunteer Board as well as it’s Treasurer.

When I remember my late wife’s dark, frightening, cancer filled days, I cringe to think there are people in this world who must go through this nightmare alone - which is not the case in the Babylon Township because residents have BBCC. Most people BBCC help do not have a devoted healthy caregiver and many are in financial distress, so the variety of free services BBCC’s staff of angels provide is an inexpressible blessing.”

The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) was founded in 1993 by three friends who lived in Babylon.

Determined to fight against breast cancer by raising awareness and educating women, the BBCC with their dedicated volunteers undertook the task of completing a demographic survey to ascertain the incidence of breast cancer in Babylon.

From this, a volunteer driven grass-roots organization grew, which serves the entire Township of Babylon, including those with all gynecological cancers in addition to those with breast cancer. Today they provide direct patient services and support to help ease the burdens that breast and all gynecological cancers put on patients and their families/caregivers.

In addition to assisting in the basic needs of those battling cancer, they also reach out to the community at large, providing educational programs to encourage healthier lifestyles, which would decrease the still very high instance of these cancers in our community. Please note, if you do not live in this township, you can still reach out to the BBCC to find out who in your area can be of help to you.

The success of the BBCC is made possible primarily through their volunteers.

This Coalition has three staff members, so volunteers are so important to them, volunteering not because they have the time, but because they have the heart to do so. Volunteering does not only benefit the cause, but it greatly benefits the person doing so as well. Focusing on others is a great way for one to heal, self-reflect and find joy.

In a time where people are isolated more than ever, The Village Green Senior Living of Levittown and the Long Island Alzheimer’s & Dementia Center teamed up for 1 mission: Spread LIAD LOVE. “I think everyone, especially now, could use extra love and support,” said LIAD Executive Director, Tori Cohen. “Our LIAD families are isolated right now and our goal with spreadingLIAD LOVE was to show them how much we’re thinking of them during these unprecedented times. This past year has been extremely challenging to so many of us, but someone with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers are truly struggling which is why it’s important for the LIAD Center to persevere to continue to provide critically needed support to families struggling with this devastating disease and we’re anxiously looking forward to opening our doors soon.”

During the week leading up to Valentine’s Day, over 50 LIAD Center families were surprised with heart balloons, chocolates, love bears, personalized cards, heart lawn signs and a message of love from a LIAD staff member and Village Green.

About the Long Island Alzheimer’s & Dementia (LIAD) Center For over 30 years, the LIAD Center has been providing supportive communitybased services to Long Island families living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.
