ove was in the air at Sanford H. Calhoun High School on February 11th as the World of Difference Club hosted a Valentine’s Day Dance for some important people.

Students in the special education program were treated to an evening of dinner, dancing and activities within the school. Club Presidents Rachel Gershengoren and Liz Scopo helped organize the event a month prior.

International Culture Levittown’s Salk Middle School students celebrated the various traditions and cultures of 13 English as a New Language students, who displayed information about their countries’ food, sports and traditions during International Day. The ENL students developed presentations that featured various aspects of their culture.

“Some of these students have lived in this country for only a few months, and it is a wonderful opportunity for them to share their heritage with peers,” ENL teacher Linora Ortega said.

Presentations in the school library included information about China, Turkey, Honduras, El Salvador, Pakistan and

more.

Students also dressed in native costume as they shared with fellow students facts about their countries. Many of the middle school teachers also collaborated on a PowerPoint presentation on places they have visited such as Italy, Singapore and Argentina.

An Afternoon with Billy By: Jamie Lynn Ryan In all the hype over our dear Buddy the Betta’s first birthday last week, another momentous occasion got lost in the shuffle – my opportunity to attend an intimate Q&A with Billy Joel at my alma mater, C.W. Post.

It was designed to give the students of the Long Island High School for the Arts an opportunity to learn from the master, one who happened to make a rather sizable donation to their school in an effort to keep it up and running for the next generation of promising performing artists.

Of course, officially, I was “covering” this event in my capacity as a journalist; however, the opportunity

to be a part of such a small audience in front of one of my idols had its own unique appeal on a personal level – at the very institution where I obtained my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree over a decade ago. While not a full-fledged concert by any means, there was “a little music” to go along with the anecdotes, making for an afternoon of memories to last a lifetime.

In the weeks since, I had occasion to peruse my college portfolio, where I came across an essay I had written on the hopes and aspirations I had for my career. “Countdown to Commencement,” it was called, covering everything from grad school to loans to the job search to that endless search for fulfillment.

As much as anyone thinks he/she has life all mapped out, it is nearly impossible to rely on a set blueprint.

Because, every now and then, life itself beckons, with all its unanticipated twists and turns.

Such was my sentiment in the Spring of 2004, and so it remains. If you had told me 12 years ago that I would be back in the Tilles Center theatre, as an editor and columnist, mere feet away from the likes of Billy Joel… well that would have fallen under the “unanticipated” category for sure. I can only imagine the thrill it was for those high school students, those with the world at their feet, endless opportunities stretched before them.

Oh, to have that feeling once again…

For the eighth consecutive year, Division Avenue High School’s Science Olympiad team earned a spot at the New York State finals, which will be held at Le Moyne College in Syracuse on March 11th-12th. Both Division Avenue and MacArthur high schools’ teams were two of 20 teams that competed at the regional competition on Jan. 30 at Wantagh High School. MacArthur High School placed 15th overall.

Shore Road students in Bellmore dressed in team colors to challenge one another in the school’s annual SixthGrade Olympics. Under the direction of physical education teacher Brian Scott, the students honed their basketball, volleyball, cage ball and fitness relay skills over the past six weeks prior to the final Olympics event.

“The Sixth-Grade Olympics promotes camaraderie among the students, as well as sportsmanship and healthy competition,” Mr. Scott explained.

As each student competed, their teammates cheered from the sidelines. “It is a wonderful way to unite the classes,” physical education teacher Mallory Cogen stated.

“The Olympics is also a special activity for the sixthgraders who look forward to it each year.”

Gift of Health As part of Winthrop Avenue School’s Health and Safety Week, students attended the Crossfit assembly with EatRite Nutrition experts Jessie Pappas and Doron Vaday.

The assembly addressed different types of beneficial exercises, nutritious snacks and the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

“If you don’t exercise regularly, you will lose the ability to exercise and keep fit as you get older,” Vaday, told the students.

Select students were

called to the stage to try a range of exercises, determine the amount of sugar in popular snacks and participate in a fruit and vegetable matching game. Vaday also encouraged students to accompany their parents to the supermarket and try fruits and vegetables with which they are not familiar.

The Epilepsy Foundation also informed students about epilepsy. Through the use of puppets, students learned what to do and what not to do if a person suffers a seizure.

After the puppet skit, the presenters answered students’ questions.

In addition, Nassau County Police Officer Sharon Galvin spoke to third- and fourthgrade students about cybersafety and staying safe while walking in their neighborhood. She cautioned the students about having too many followers on social media and the dangers of conversing online with people they don’t know personally.

Word on the Street The Wantagh English Language Arts Department hosted the first annual Word on the Street Literacy Celebration at the middle school, with more than 30 students and staff members reading original works and favorite literacy

pieces to peers and parents.

Director of ELA, Reading and Libraries Nicole Waldbauer said she was pleased to see that so many talented students participated in this celebration of the written word. “Word on the Street

is a way for the district to celebrate literacy and the spoken word,” she noted.

The cafeteria was decorated in a city theme with lights and banners of the New York City building scape and pizza was served to everyone who attended.

Ms. Case said the dogs enjoy the students’ company. “The dogs give the students confidence and lower the stress when they are struggling with their reading,” she said.

“This is also an excellent way to motivate the students to read.”

Following the first round of competition, students met and played with members of the Long Island Bombers Beep Baseball team, a group of players who demonstrate their version of baseball by using beeping baseballs and bases.

In addition, participants learned how to play Goal Ball with the help of the New York Institute for Special Education. The object of the game is to defend the goal from the opposing team by using their bodies to block a ball. The game is played in complete silence for players to determine the direction of the oncoming ball by listening for the bells inside

the ball.

Of the participants in the Braille Challenge, Meadowbrook Elementary School first-grader Kayla Ochtera and Woodland Middle School sixthgrader Robbie Stahl both participated in the event.

The regional event is the first step toward the national competition, which will be held in June at the Braille Institute’s headquarters in Los Angeles. Students from across the nation are in the process of completing preliminary testing in the hopes of qualifying among the top-scoring 60 contestants. The top scorers will advance to nationals to represent their state as they compete against the top blind students from across the United States and Canada.

The district also extends its appreciation to the New York Institute for Special Education, Pizza Supreme, Charlie Meaney’s, the Rockville Centre Lions Club, Seedlings Braille Books for Children, National Braille Press, Humanware and East Meadow’s Special Education PTA for their donations and support, as well as all the event volunteers for making the day a huge success.

On February 6th, the East Meadow School District held the ninth annual Long Island Regional Braille Challenge at W. T. Clarke High School.

The Braille Challenge is an academic competition developed by the Braille Institute of America to motivate school-aged visually impaired or blind children to continue their study of Braille. Throughout the competition, students completed a number of grade-level exercises to demonstrate their proficiency in Braille reading, writing, reading speed, comprehension, spelling, proofreading and use of tactile graphics.

During the opening ceremony, members of the W. T. Clarke Brass Ensemble performed as the 18 participants assembled into the cafeteria to be recognized.

For the second quarter of the 2015-2016 school year, the John F. Kennedy High School Student Government has selected Mark Reyes and Hamlet Cardenas as recipients of the Cougars as Role Model Americans (C.A.R.M.A.) Award.

When Mark Reyes was 12 years old, he joined the Boy Scouts of America. The goal is to work your way up through seven different ranks by completing certain milestones.

After these have been completed and the ranks have been awarded, the boys have the opportunity to obtain the highest and most respected rank of Eagle. This is an extremely high honor that only six percent of scouts go on to achieve and it requires the organization and completion of a service project. This is where Mark stands out from other scouts; he had a larger plan in mind when he joined at 12 years old than the simple projects most boys pick to meet this requirement.

Mark wanted his service project to leave a mark on the community. He has been working since the age of 12 and saving up his money so that he could use it toward this project that he had planned.

Mark also took the initiative of setting up a GoFundMe page to post and send around social media, as well as put together presentations for potential donors in New York City. After much hard work and dedication, Mark was able to raise $3,000 to build swing sets for the ELIJA School, an education center for children with autism.

Mark was inspired to do this project not only by the idea of leaving a legacy on the community through being a scout, but also by the kids that he met during this process. He was reminded of his time in elementary school and saw how similar these children were to him in his childhood desire of having fun. He thought about his favorite school memory, recess, and decided these kids needed to experience the same joy that he had. Now

wants the opportunity to be able to contribute to this essential part of another child’s upbringing. Since he was a little boy, Hamlet has seen firefighters as heroes and has admired them for their bravery and selflessness. This is what inspired Hamlet to become a junior firefighter for the Bellmore Fire Department. He has been a junior firefighter since his freshman year and said he “feels it allows him to give back to his community while achieving the admirable qualities that firefighters possess.”

Every Sunday morning, Hamlet goes to the firehouse in order to participate in firefighter training drills. These drills will allow Hamlet to progress as a firefighter so that one day he will be able to help the community to the best of his abilities.

He also uses his free time to be at the firehouse so that he can help clean, check equipment and set up for events.

Through his work as a junior firefighter, Hamlet has been able to reach his goals of helping the community and the people in it. He feels that he has been able to contribute to keeping the community safe with the help of the other firefighters. Help Kids Feel Comfortable at the Dentist

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that a child go to the dentist by age 1, or within six months of the eruption of his or her first tooth.

Parents worried about how their kids will respond to the dentist can take the following steps to acclimate kids to dental visits to make them more comfortable during their appointments now and down the road: Be a positive role model. Children frequently learn by example. If they see their parents being diligent about dental care, they’re more likely to embrace proper oral hygiene. Bring children to your own dental appointments so they understand the process and become familiar with the type of equipment used.

Routine dental examinations and cleanings are an important component of oral healthcare for both children and adults. However, many children do not visit the dentist until well after the time recommended by medical and dental professionals.

Stick to the first-tooth milestone. Take your child to the dentist on or about when his or her first tooth erupts. Early dental visits will get kids used to going to the dentist and prevent minor problems that may lead to more complex

dental issues.

Read books about the dentist and role play. Information can allay kids’ fears about the dentist. Read books together about dental visits and act out possible scenarios with your kids. Give kids toy dental health tools and have them practice exams on you and vice-versa.

Be supportive and instill trust. Avoid telling your child that everything will be okay. If a procedure is needed, this could affect his or her trust in you and make the dental office an even greater source of anxiety. Simply be supportive and offer a hand to squeeze or a hug if your child needs you.

Consider using your dentist. Some parents like to take their children to a pediatric dentist, but it may not always be necessary. Many family practices cater to patients of all ages, and the familiarity of the office may help make children feel more comfortable. Speak with your dentist about the ages they see.

Steer clear of negative words. Michael J. Hanna, DMD, a national spokesperson for the AAPD, suggests using positive phrases like “clean, strong, healthy teeth” to make the visit seem fun and positive rather than scary and alarming. Let the office staff come up with their own words to describe processes that won’t seem too frightening.

By employing these techniques, kids’ dental visits can be more pleasant for all involved, paving the way for a lifetime of healthy teeth.

Art Honor Society Inductees The National Art Honor Society Induction for Sanford H. Calhoun High School was held on February 11th. Thirtythree new inductees attended a ceremony that celebrated the impact art has on our lives.

Cheryl Fontana, director of Fine & Performing Arts and Adult Education, spoke of her connection to Calhoun arts and how her experience in the high school led her to her current career.

“An induction into the National Art Honor Society is something that you should be incredibly proud of as it truly

demonstrates your passion and commitment to art,” said Fontana.

She said it all came down to five basic lessons for her: “celebrate different perspectives, realize the impact of subtle changes, understand the value of criticism, appreciate what surrounds you and finally don’t be afraid to take risks.”

World of Difference Love was in the air at Sanford H. Calhoun High School on February 11th as the World of Difference Club hosted a Valentine’s Day dance for some important people.

Students in the special education program were treated to an evening of dinner, dancing and activities within the school.

Club Presidents Rachel Gershengoren and Liz Scopo helped organize the event a month prior. They wore shirts and manned ticket, food and other stations to help make the evening run smoothly.

The special education, along with the art department, even created papier-mache globes to

serve as table decorations for the Love Makes the World Go Round theme.

A member of the club since freshmen year, Gershengoren said, “interacting with the special education students and seeing them smiling and dancing” is incredibly rewarding for her and her fellow club members.

Sophomore Rina Sarfraz, along with the teaching staff and administrators at Mepham High School, organized a Middle Eastern and South Asian Night in an effort to promote education about the Islam faith, as well as celebrate the Muslim culture.

Rina said she conceived the idea after having a discussion with Mepham Principal Michael Harrington about how they can “bring awareness to Islam and show the beautiful culture.”

Habeeb Ahmed, presidentelect of the Islamic Center of Long Island, explaining the five pillars of Islam, as well as similarities between Islam, Christianity and Judaism.

After a Bollywood dance performance, the festivities continued in the cafeteria where the crowd noshed on traditional food, learned dance steps and were able to get henna tattooes.

Hosted on behalf of the World of Difference Club, whose advisor is Josephine Parlagreco, their goal is to teach others about

acceptace and respect of people no matter race, religion, gender, etc.

“The kids are just amazing at how accepting they are and how much they want to teach others about being a good person,” she added.

Parlagreco said she was impressed with the group’s efforts, especially Rina.

“There are so few kids that think of an idea and are able to follow through. And have so much conviction that they are willing to do whatever it takes to see an event through,” she added.

Levittown students Brandon Soedarmasto, a Division Avenue High School senior, and Amanda DeLisi, a MacArthur High School junior, both qualified to play on the boys and girls Nassau County All-Star Team for bowling and will compete in the New York State Championship next month in Buffalo.

Brandon played a key role in the Blue Dragons fourth-place finish in the Nassau County Team tournament with a season bowling average of 239.

He placed third in the individual tournament, earning him a spot on the Nassau County All-Star Team.

Day of Literacy Charles A. Reinhard Early Learning Center students and staff celebrated the written word during Literacy Day that lasted into the evening.

It was a flurry of activity as Winthrop Avenue School third-graders in the Bellmore School District explored the various science experiments and presentations featured at the school’s annual science fair.

Science consultant Brian Wallrapp explained that the students were encouraged to try their hands at experiments that are safe and practical and to share their results by crafting a formal presentation. “The goal or purpose of the

science fair is for students to perform experiments and to discover things they did not know, as well as to get students excited about science.”

The experiments varied with students exploring how brownies taste with missing ingredients, whether fruits and vegetables sink in water, whether all foods contain fats, and many more. Each student received a ribbon and certificate for their participation.

“This is a great opportunity for Winthrop students to explore scientific concepts that they are interested in and to share their results with peers,” Principal Sally Curto said.

Spectators also enjoyed demonstrations of mock police arrests and forensic investigations.

“This is an evening when students demonstrate the skills they have acquired through study and practical application,” Director Gerri Fox-Wilson said.

Plan of Action In celebration of President’s Day, Wantagh Elementary School students in Elizabeth Shevlin’s class developed a project detailing what actions they would take if elected to the position of the nation’s president.

In social studies, students have been learning about President Abraham Lincoln and President George Washington’s contributions to the country, and combined their newly acquired beginning paragraph writing skills to create a project called “If I Were President.”

In their essays, some of the students said they would hand out free pizza in New York City, would declare ice cream a free snack and make the weekend longer.

One student said he would place his face on the dollar bill, while another said he would meet with other world leaders to guarantee that they would be nice to one another. A student even declared that he would paint the White House blue.
