Edwards, of Face Your Monsters, made a special trip to help teams of junior student detectives find the lurking beast by solving clues and decoding messages that led them to an array of shelved library books.

Edwards said the goal of the activity was for students, unassisted, to learn to use the card catalog.

The Sea Tow Foundation is accepting applications from non-profit organizations and boating agencies throughout the country to host a life jacket loaner program in their local area through a new grant from the Sport Fish Restoration & Boating Trust Fund, which is administered by the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Sea Tow Foundation is a non-profit, 501(c) (3) organization with the mission of promoting safe boating practices. To help promote life jacket use, the Sea Tow Foundation stocks more than 250 life jacket loaner stands nationwide

The Sea Tow Foundation Life Jacket Loaner program has been funded through donations and grants since its inception in 2008. Since then, more than 28,500 free life jackets have been loaned to boaters through the program.

“Life jacket loaner programs are most often used by boaters who forgot to pack their own life jackets or decided at the last minute to invite a friend to go boating and didn’t have a life jacket that would fit him or her,”

said Sea Tow Foundation Executive Director Gail R. Kulp, CAE. “These new life jacket loaner stations will be open in time for the 2015 summer boating season so that boaters around the country can have the opportunity to borrow a life jacket for a day out on the water.”

Life jacket loaner program applications now are being accepted through March 1st, 2015.

Used to be, if you wanted to get in touch with someone, you picked up the phone and called.

If you couldn’t reach them immediately, you left a message – either on an answering machine or with another person associated with them – and then waited patiently for a return call. Tedious, right?

So why is it that, these days, with every gadget and method of communicating imaginable, it seems more difficult than ever to actually, you know, communicate?

Between cell phones and texting and social media, there are more ways to reach friends and family – and even complete strangers – than ever before. Everyone has at least one gadget easily accessible at all times, and yet how often do you find yourself waiting hours (or days) for a response? That is, if one ever comes.

It seems odd to think that communication could almost be made too easy, but that is precisely what has occurred. With the constant influx of e-mails, texts, photo and video messages, Facebook and Instagram notifications

and, oh yeah, actual missed calls and voicemails, I suppose the easiest course of action for some is to simply “ignore all” and move on.

Too bad there are those of us on the receiving end of that dismissive approach – people who, for all our technology and gadgets, actually yearn for that human connection in the form of a personal acknowledgement that said communication was received, processed, appreciated for what it was worth and responded to appropriately.

Going Batty For Science Third-grade students at Winthrop Avenue School celebrated their scientific knowledge on February 5th at the school’s annual science fair.

Following weeks of preparations, the Bellmore students showcased their

experiments, provided demonstrations and answered questions on their findings for Board of Education members, district administrations, parents and classmates.

Each student received ribbons and certificates

of excellence for their participation.

Themes varied from crystal egg geodes, examining what drinks cause cavities, sun safety and lemon batteries.

LEVITTOWN TEAMS UP - Students and staff at Lee Road Elementary School in the Levittown School District are teaming up against lymphoma and leukemia this February. Celebrating African American History

Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray, Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby and the entire Town Board today hosted Hempstead Town’s annual African-American History Month Celebration in the Nathan L. H. Bennett Pavilion at Town Hall in Hempstead. The theme of the 2015 celebration was “Moving Forward ... With Purpose.”

The Town of Hempstead’s African-American History Month Planning Committee hosted the cultural program, which featured musical selections and inspiring speeches.

The committee paid tribute to two community leaders: Jackie Jones-Ford with the Community Service Award and Joyce Shackley, 1st Vice President of the NAACP with the presitgious Rosa Parks Award. Also, 15 Town of Hempstead employees were honored for their twenty-five years ofservice to residents of America’s largest township.

“Our committee always has the difficult task of selecting two award recipients, and this year was no different,” Murray said. “We’re proud to present two deserving

honorees with this year’s African-American History Month awards.”

“I’m truly proud to celebrate the achievements of our award recipients,” Goosby said.

“Our Community Service Award, winner Jackie Jones-Ford, is a true leader and trailblazer, and our Rosa Parks Award winner, Joyce Shackley, personifies the legacy left behind by the great civil rights champion.”

Jones-Ford is a 19-year veteran of the Village of Hempstead Police Department. She started her law enforcement career in 1995 with the New York City Housing Department.

Currently, she is a detective with the Hempstead Police Department in the Juvenile Aid Bureau. Jones-Ford is also director of the Hempstead Police Activity League (PAL).

Shackley, a retired 35-year data entry manager for King Kullen Supermarkets, is a life member of the Hempstead NAACP. She has been active for the NAACP for more than 25 years and is now the organization’s 1st Vice President. Shackley has also volunteered in

an array of organizations, including as coordinator for the Village of Hempstead’s beautification project, commissioner of the village’s Parks Department, the AARP Hempstead Chapter #5234 and as membership chair of the Central Nassau League of Women Voters.

The program also featured a keynote speech

by Reverand Dr. Eric Charles Mallette, Pastor of the Greater Second Baptist Church of Freeport.

Mallette, who served in the United States Marine Corps, is widely known for his inspirational sermons and his involvement in the community. Rev. Mallette, who has served as pastor of the Greater Second Baptist Church of Freeport since 1998, was the first AfricanAmerican chaplain for the Village of Freeport’s police and fire departments.

“I thank Rev. Eric Mallette for gracing us with his inspiring words at today’s ceremony,” Murray said. “I’m delighted that our residents join each and every year to celebrate the co-ntributions that African Americans have made to our township and to our country.”

Deadline Extended In 2011, the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) unveiled a historic educational initiative called the FASNY Higher Education Learning Plan (HELP). This statewide community college tuition reimbursement program is geared towards recruiting and retaining volunteer firefighters throughout New York.

FASNY announced a deadline extension - to February 20th - for firefighters to apply for the new 2015 semester.

“FASNY HELP has been a tremendous success and a vital initiative for fire departments to boost their recruiting of the next generation of firefighters,” said FASNY President Robert McConville.

“HELP funding comes from our federal SAFER grant, which has driven recruitment initiatives throughout the state.

We urge all interested students to sign up, and apply for this tuition reimbursement program

before the February 20th deadline.”

Under FASNY HELP, an individual who hasn’t already achieved a college degree, or has not taken 80 or more college credits, is eligible for up to 100% tuition reimbursement in exchange for maintaining good grades and fulfilling service requirements in one of New York’s volunteer fire companies. There is no restriction on the type of academic course(s) that the FASNY HELP studentvolunteer firefighter can pursue either on a fulltime or part-time basis.

Starting with the Fall 2013 semester, FASNY HELP was expanded to cover online courses taken through Empire State College.

FASNY HELP funds can be utilized for tuition costs incurred in the fall and spring semesters. Eligible student-volunteers must maintain acceptable levels of training and volunteer activity while attending school and fulfill a service requirement after they

complete their course of study. They must attend the closest community college or one within a 50-mile radius of their residence. Empire State College’s inclusion in the program has expanded students’ options.

Due to a variety of factors, many volunteer fire departments are experiencing the need to recruit and retain more members. Tuition reimbursement can be an effective incentive for people to volunteer in their local community.

The deadline to apply for tuition reimbursement for the new semester has been extended to February 20th.

Family & Children’s Association, Long Island’s leading human care agency is seeking volunteers for its new Friendly Visitors program set to begin in May. Family & Children’s Association serves nearly 9,000 seniors each year providing case management, financial counseling, health insurance counseling and

other support services.

They will provide training and on-going support to volunteers enabling them to provide companionship and once-a-week visitation to a local, homebound senior. Volunteers should be able to drive to various locations within Nassau County and commit to one hour per week of socialization with their senior.

I have a deeply ingrained love for music, particularly listening to new things and looking further into the artists I find interesting.

Unfortunately, what I have noticed as a high school freshman is that I often struggle to find people to share discoveries with who are willing to explore new musical grounds. The general trend seems to be that young people don’t recognize music as a main focal point in their lives like past generations have. Instead, the idea of immersing oneself in this highly spiritual, universal experience is being practiced less, which is evidenced by many of my peers.

On countless occasions, my parents have recounted their time in high school with stories that can all be drawn back to a mutual appreciation for music.

Although not all friendships were rooted in their love for the same bands or genres (but many were), people could always find a way to relate to one another through this medium. When people my age find themselves without something to talk about, discussion about a new favorite tune is hardly ever even considered. It is easier to simply default to social media or other means of digital distraction to break the tension.

There is also an astounding lack of devotion to artists nowadays. With the advent of streaming services like Pandora and Spotify, individual songs are played on stations created by the user. Allowing unfavorable songs to be skipped and offering unlimited access to an endless list of tracks gives young people no reason to purchase a musician’s entire

album. To constantly browse through fragments of what is really a large cohesive work does a great disservice to the listener. In order to allow yourself to grow with the artist, you must see the whole picture.

This develops a story that can be interpreted differently for anyone and is what should drive people to become engrossed in other similar compositions. A fast paced society is creating a youth who undervalue music and cannot fully appreciate it.

We are neglecting many opportunities for expanding our knowledge of the world of music and are failing to forge lasting bonds with others within it. While this may be very disheartening, popular culture can embrace new ideas very rapidly, providing some hope for fully inviting music into our lives.

Exploring The Future The students of Nassau BOCES Doshi STEM Institute have been studying leading-edge breakthroughs in the everexpanding field of genetic exploration. During a recent lesson, the young scientists discovered the wonders of DNA coding.

During an interactive lab on DNA metabarcoding, students learned how several species in a given environment can

be identified by a single sample of degraded DNA. They also learned how DNA microarrays enable scientists to experiment on thousands of genes at once.

“DNA metabarcoding a very powerful tool,” explained Doshi STEM Instructor Jacqueline Smith.

“In normal barcoding, you can only obtain one result and your sample must be as

pure as possible, which is extremely limiting.

Metabarcoding opens up numerous possibilities.”

“The experience our students are getting in the DNA labs is invaluable,” said Principal Dr. AJ Hepworth. “The lab are giving students eye-opening, firsthand knowledge of biodiversity and the importance of laboratory research in medical science.”

Take Back Day Held The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) collected over 52 boxes of pharmaceutical medications during the first DEC Long Island Pharmaceutical Take Back Day at healthcare facilities, DEC Commissioner Joe Martens announced today.

Twenty-five long-term healthcare facilities throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties participated in the program, which collects and responsibly destroys unused or expired pharmaceuticals.

“Health care facilities can produce large amounts of expired or unused medications and many have

few options for disposal,” said Commissioner Martens. “The success of this collection by DEC is a positive step that will help to protect the environment by preventing medications from entering waterways. We are grateful to all the facilities that enthusiastically agreed to participate in this event.”

DEC received funding through the Environmental Fund for $150,000 to expand the program, which already exists in the New York City Watershed. The program is designed to reduce the amount of pharmaceuticals that are “flushed” by facilities and can end up in Long Island’s groundwater, bays and estuaries.

Pharmaceuticals have been detected at low levels in New York State waterways and Long Island’s shallow groundwater.

Adrienne Esposito, Executive Director of Citizens Campaign for the Environment said, “We are thrilled that DEC was able to provide this critical service, which benefits all Long Islanders and goes a long way toward protecting Long Island’s drinking and surface waters from pharmaceutical contaminants.

Giving health care facilities a safe and convenient pharmaceutical disposal option has already reduced the number of institutions flushing unused medications,

and now participation in this program needs to be expanded and strengthened in the future.”

Participating facilities, made up primarily of nursing, extended care and rehabilitation centers, began storing unused and expired medications in October when they were first contacted by DEC. Environmental Conservation Officers (ECOs) then visited each of the 25 facilities this week to collect the stored medications and brought them to the Covanta Waste-to-Energy Plant in Westbury, which volunteered its services to incinerate the products.

Prescription drug take back efforts began in

the last few years. Prior to these initiatives the normal disposal practice was to flush unwanted drugs. With technological advances in analytical techniques, it is now possible to detect very low levels of drugs in surface water and groundwater.

Some drugs pass largely unaltered through wastewater treatment plants and enter rivers and other waterways.

Drugs from heath care facilities, pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities and farms can also find their way into the water.

Flushed medications have been found in New York lakes, rivers and streams which can negatively affect the

waterways. A nationwide study done in 1999 and 2000 by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) found low levels of drugs such as antibiotics, hormones, contraceptives and steroids in 80 percent of rivers and streams tested.

Medications adversely affect fish and other aquatic wildlife and increase the development of drug-resistant bacteria.

Facing The Monster According to monster detective Jason Edwards, there was a monster residing in the Levittown’s Lee Road Elementary School library.

Edwards of Face Your Monsters made a special trip to help teams of junior student detectives find the lurking beast by solving clues and decoding messages that led them to

an array of shelved library books. Edwards said the goal of the activity was for students, unassisted, to learn to use the card catalog and to find a book, all while having fun.

“You must be smart, observant and persistent,” he told the students.

“Teamwork is key.”

After solving three clues and decoding the messages,

the students were not only led to specific books, but determined the location of the green, wiggly and not-so-scary monster that lurked on the library shelves. Not only did they learn to work in teams, the students acquired skills that will assist in their ability to locate interesting books and research specific topics.

Students in Barnum Woods Elementary School first-grade teacher Camille Iovino-Coli’s class completed a unit of study on American civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Students read various words highlighted in the literature and analyzed graphs revealing their classmates’ favorite penguins.

At the end of the unit, the kindergarten classes assembled in the South Pole for penguin games.

She especially wants educators, families and professionals to know that sobriety at an early age is achievable and that it greatly enhances life’s possibilities. Miss Conner states, “It’s so important to understand that addiction is a family disease,” said Conner. “I experienced this firsthand within my own family.

But I’ve also learned that through treatment and recovery you can break

the cycle.”

LICADD is working feverishly to put a stop to the increase in addiction and the tragedies that result from it. Children and families are being devastated and LICADD offers a solution with preventive education and support services to help break the cycle.

schools as both a teacher and building leader. For the last nine years he has served as the Principal of the nationally ranked Cold Spring Harbor Junior/Senior High School in Suffolk County.

Mr. Matuk has presented at several statewide and national educational annual conventions and has facilitated workshops for Hofstra University and Queens College. Mr. Matuk is also an adjunct professor at the C.W. Post Graduate School of Education.

Word Master Wantagh Elementary School fourth-grader Natasha Meagher achieved individual national honors in the annual WordMasters Challenge.

Through the district’s Horizons Program, Natasha competed in the Gold Division and received a perfect score of 20 in the first challenge of the

school year. Nationally, only 18 students achieved this result.

The WordMasters Challenge is an exercise in critical thinking that encourages growth in vocabulary and verbal reasoning. Students are given a set of interesting, new words, which are considerably harder

than grade level, and then challenged to use those words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of logical relationships.

Working to solve the analogies helps students learn to think analytically and metaphorically.

Honored As An Education Partner Bridget Lively, a senior at Island Trees High School in Levittown, is being lauded as one of the most devoted supporters of public education on Long Island. Bridget is among 13 honorees to receive the 2015 Nassau BOCES Education Partner award, bestowed annually on those individuals and organizations whose impact on public education in Nassau County can be measured in tangible ways.

A strategic education partner with school districts since 1967, Nassau BOCES created the awards program to recognize those who share its mission of ensuring a successful, challenging, caring and safe environment that enables students of all ages and abilities to achieve their maximum potential.

These outstanding individuals and organizations have made strides to accomplishing key educational goals embraced by Nassau BOCES, such as ensuring student success.

Island Trees High School Senior Bridget Lively will be honored at the awards gala held in March by the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation.

The Foundation is an independent non-profit organization that raises funds for innovative educational programs that fall outside of the agency’s budget.

Bridget Lively is an active leader in her school and community. A prized athlete on the varsity soccer and lacrosse teams, she has been named a Scholar Athlete and an

All-Conference champ. An accomplished musician, she leads the high school marching band as a drum major and is a first-chair clarinetist in concert band.

Bridget serves as President of the Foreign Language Honor Society, Vice President of the National Honor Society, Treasurer of the Tri-M Music Honor Society and Secretary of Athletes Helping Athletes, a peer counseling group. She is a committed member of Key Club, Spanish Club, Yearbook Club and the Varsity Quizbowl team.

Bridget spearheaded the effort to bring the Glamour Girls community outreach program to Island Trees.

Now, as co-president, the oversees the group’s monthly visits to nursing homes, where students

give manicures, facials and makeovers to participating residents.

She has been chosen to participate in important conferences, such as the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Conference.

Last spring, she was selected by the League of Women Voters to represent Nassau County at the Students Inside Albany Conference, where she met her local assemblyman, and sat on the assembly and Senate floors.

Even with her extraordinarily involved extracurricular life, Bridget is a top academic achiever, ranking fifth in her class.

She has held a place on the High Honor Roll her entire high school career and has earned the AP Scholar with Distinction Award while maintaining a full course

load of advanced placement classes.

Outside of school, Bridget is a clinic leader for the Police Activity League Youth Girls’ Lacrosse Camp and a certified Junior Lacrosse Official.

She dutifully serves her church as a Sunday School teacher, counselor in training for the elementary girls’ group, and as a member of the youth group and student praise team.

Bridget has done remarkable humanitarian work across the country.

She helped to rebuild in Joplin, Missouri in the wake of an F5 tornado that destroyed the town. In South Dakota, she helped to bring new homes to the impoverished Pine Ridge Native American Reservation. Closer to

home, she worked in the Rockaways to help rebuild following the devastation of Hurricane Sandy.

“Bridget Lively is an ambitious, dedicated and vivacious young lady,” wrote her award nominator. “She excels in the classroom and is dedicated to helping her fellow students to fight peer pressure, combat the dangers of destructive decision-making and to make positive choices.”

For the second consecutive year, Wantagh Middle School seventh-grade student William Hostetter is the winner of the schoollevel competition for the National Geographic Bee. Eighth-grader Thomas Moran placed second.

Prior to the holiday break, preliminary rounds were conducted in all classes, and 30 students qualified to compete in the school wide finals on

January 30th. Under the direction of social studies teacher David Cippoletti and District Supervisor of Social Studies Christopher Widmann, competitors were tested in a challenging 15-round contest on their knowledge of U.S. cities, historic places, continents and U.S. and world geography. After the school-level competition, William took a test for a chance to participate in the state finals.

The National Geographic Bee is not only designed to review and test students’ knowledge of world geography, but to motivate student knowledge of exciting countries and continents and their history.

The district congratulates William on this academic achievement and wishes him the best of luck in his advancement in the competition.

MatheMagic Students in grades K-5 at Parkway Elementary School recently enjoyed MatheMagic assemblies.

The events promoted math skills and problem solving through visuals, history, language and entertainment.

Disaster Recovery Fund are six communities within the Town of Hempstead that have been recognized as the most affected communities within the state of New York. The Town of Hempstead has filed the claim on behalf of the Bellmore, Merrick, Seaford and Wantagh communities.

“Hempstead Town has been aggressive in pursuing aid to mitigate additional financial impact for residents who have been tragically victimized by Hurricane Sandy,” stated Supervisor Murray. “We wanted the cost of these projects to not fall directly on the taxpayers, and the New York Rising Community Reconstruction Program has made this possible.”

This funding will aide in developing a Comprehensive Master Drainage Plan and Study for the NY Rising Community Reconstruction areas of Bellmore, Merrick, Seaford and Wantagh for

widespread flooding from Superstorm Sandy. This project will provide a “roadmap” for drainage infrastructure upgrades to answer unmet recovery needs, and ensure a floodprotected community.

“We are grateful that the New York Rising Community Reconstruction Program is helping the Bellmore, Merrick, Seaford and Wantagh communities determine infrastructure needs to protect the areas from future flooding,” stated Councilwoman King Sweeney.

“The south shore communities of Bellmore, Merrick, Seaford and Wantagh were extremely affected by Hurricane Sandy and it is comforting to know they are receiving much needed assistance to continue to rebuild and protect residents from future storms,” concluded Supervisor Murray.
