On January 26th, the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District SPETA and the Community Parent Center hosted its ninth annual Transition Fair for Students with Disabilities: From Eligibility to Employment and Beyond at Sanford H.

Calhoun High School.

The event presented a step-by-step overview of the transition process, from eligibility determination through employment to supported living options for individuals with special needs.

It’s here! It’s finally arrived!

The moment you all (well I and my Human) have been waiting for! My very first birthday in my bowl, celebrated this past weekend with my Human family. Who would’ve thought this day would come…

Of course, in Betta years, that probably makes me about 47. Not to mention the countless days… months… years… I spent languishing in that tiny Tupperware container they kept me in at the pet store. But, ever since February 16th, 2015, the day my Human adopted me, all has been well.

There was a party, with dinner, and even a few presents!

What does one buy a Betta, you ask? Well, there was the pre-Birthday/Christmas gift of a brand new tank – complete

with a filter and a light and everything – which my Human has yet to transfer me into… something about not wanting to “traumatize” me without consulting with the “pet experts” at the store first.

I haven’t received a scheduled moving date as of yet.

Speaking of, I’m still patiently waiting to be taken on that shopping spree I was promised back in August for my six-month birthday. All the sales that have come and gone… just think what fancy toys and plants I could have accumulated by now! I must have at least enough for a small castle saved away. And pretty gravel… and maybe a leafy hammock to sleep in… and a seashell to decorate…

Tiny brain, big dreams.

The one thing I didn’t get was a fishy friend to play with.

I don’t need anything fancy like me; perhaps just a small

shrimp or a snail to keep me company, and maybe vacuum my bowl now and then. Those long hours spent waiting for my Human to return home each day are awfully boring.

There are only so many laps a Betta can swim around his plant, only so much gravel to push from one corner to another.

Ah, but enough complaining. I’ve decided to turn over a new fin for my new year and focus on being positive and loving toward my Human, my Grammy and any other visitors who might like to visit and gaze upon my beauty. (Hey, I didn’t say I was going to take up modesty.)

‘Til next time, thanks to all the readers for their birthday greetings. And to my Human family, thank you for the best first birthday a Betta could hope to have.

As a Detective in the New York City Police Department, he made more than 600 arrests in connection with murders, shootings, assaults, bribery and possession of firearms. Closer to home, Councilman D’Esposito is a former Chief of the Island Park Fire Department and served as Public Information Officer for the Village of Island Park.

Councilman D’Esposito serves on the Board of Directors for the Nassau County Firefighters Museum & Education

Center, and is a cofounder of the Jimi Gubelli Foundation. D’Esposito is a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and is also a member of the Oceanside Knights of Columbus.

As a resident of Island Park, Councilman D’Esposito witnessed firsthand the devastation caused by Superstorm Sandy. His commitment to the recovery effort was recognized by many throughout New York State, including Governor Andrew Cuomo, who appointed D’Esposito as Co-Chairman of the state’s Community Reconstruction Program.

has received the 2014 Nassau County Francis X. Pendl Humanitarian Award, the 2014 Town of Hempstead Distinguished Service Award and more than 50 police department medals for his commitment to serving and protecting residents.

The American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women campaign has for more than a decade raised awareness of heart disease as the No. 1 killer of women – killing more women than all forms of cancer combined. Most women don’t notice the symptoms of heart disease until it’s too late, which is why heart disease has been called the silent killer.

Lorinda Bauer, director cardiac services and Dr. Amgad Makaryus, chairman of the department of Cardiology led an informative program for patients and staff on February 5th about the strides made by this campaign with respect to cardiovascular disease and tips on healthy cardiovascular living.

Steven is a student of Amy Sue McPartlan and submitted his work titled “Shoes,” in which he used Prismacolor colored pencils on paper. A student of Patricia Beary, Osama submitted an untitled

pigment print. The art department selected both students for synthesis of concept, materials and method.

The district congratulates Steven and Osama on this artistic accomplishment.

Almost 100 Girl Scouts of Nassau County recently walked the runway at Roosevelt Field during their first ever “Cookie Creations Cookie Box Fashion Show.”

Nicole and Allison from Plainview were among models who wore a design created out of Thin Mints, Trefoils, Dosi-dos, Samoas, Tagalongs, Savannah Smiles, Rah-Rah Raisin and Toffee-tastic boxes into wearable upcycled, fashion-forward apparel and accessories.

The event coincides with the Girl Scout Cookie® season, which launched Friday, December 18th, 2015 and will run until April 4th, 2016. The Girl Scout Cookie® program teaches girls the five skills needed in both life and business: goal setting, decision making, money management, business ethics, and people skills.

This is the second year of Digital Cookie, the first national digital platform that allows girls to sell cookies online and learn 21st-century business skills, in addition to the continued tradition of taking paper orders.

CharACTer Matters For the past several weeks, Winthrop Avenue School students in Bellmore have gathered together to perfect their roles and singing skills for the bi-annual character drama. Under the direction of Mallory Cogen and Marjorie Falabella, students acted out two

flawless performances for parents and peers of the drama titled “CharACTer Matters II,” which drove home the district’s important core values through a fairytale theme.

Ms. Falabella explained that these dramatic performances focus on the district’s development

of core values, while simultaneously assisting in the student’s development of independence and selfconfidence. The studentactors practiced three times a week during recess and becoming involved in the production made each of them feel special.

POSING AT PINEWOOD - Cub Scouts and leaders from the Webelos II Den 7 of Merrick’s Cub Scout Pack 206 strike a pose at their Pinewood Derby! The Pinewood Derby is held once a year. Each boy is given a block of wood, 4 nails and 4 wheels and creates his own car to race down the track on derby day. The winners compete in the District Derby held in March.

In the Merrick School District, Norman J. Levy Lakeside fifth- and sixthgrade students advanced their chess skills with the help of the Long Island Chess Nuts.

The Long Island Chess Nuts are a not-forprofit organization that promotes the educational

value and positive benefits of playing chess. Members continued educating students about the game of chess by teaching them two new skills, castling and pawn promotion.

Castling is a special move involving the king and one rook to protect the king with a barricade wall. Pawn

promotion is advancing a pawn to convert into a queen, rook, bishop or knight.

After learning about the two new skills, students were able to verse each other and apply their new moves.

During the February 3rd public meeting of Levittown’s Board of Education, the trustees and central office administrators honored residents Gina Interdonato and Esta Lachow for their contributions to the district’s seventh annual

Adopt-A-Family Program.

Both Interdonato and Lachow hosted the event that collects donations for hundreds of individuals during the holiday season.

This year, Adopt-A-Family donations made the holidays of 206 individuals sparkle.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald described the annual event as an “unbelievable endeavor” and one that allows the entire community to feel good about helping others during the holidays.

While most elementary school students on Long Island were predicting whether the groundhog would see its shadow, Wantagh Elementary School fourth-graders were devising simple machines that could help a groundhog escape from its habitat. The activity was

the culmination of a study on the types of simple machines including the pulley, lever, wheel/axle, incline plane and wedge.

In the school’s STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics) room, students first visited stations where they learned

the principles of each simple machine. They were then instructed to build a machine utilizing those principles to assist with the groundhog’s escape from its den. The students then had to provide an explanation as to why the machine made it easier for the groundhog to escape.

Stories came to life on the faces of Northside School students in Levittown during two StoryFaces performances with storyteller and artist Christopher Agostino.

The assembly was one of several activities during the school’s annual celebration of Parents As Reading Partners in which students are encouraged to

read each night.

“Stories are meant to be shared,” Agostino told the students. “Once you have heard them, their yours to share with others.”

Select students were called to the front of the room, where Agostino painted their faces to illustrate his original tales including “The Legend of the Haunted Bridge,”

“The Tiger that Went to the House of the Sun,” and “The Lion and the Mouse.”

During the performances, Agostino also encouraged students to read and expressed how reading has developed his career as an artist.

“Reading is an adventure that brings me to a whole other world,” he said.

Groundhogs Everywhere or early spring. After Malverne Mel predicted an early spring, students wrote a short essay on the event and whether their predictions were correct.

As a science activity, kindergartners studied shadows. They also read books about shadows and Groundhog Day, including

Susanna Leonard Hill’s “Wake Up, Groundhog!”

After all the predictions were accounted for, kindergarten students sang “I’m Not Afraid of My Shadow,” and made groundhog puppets, which they held while singing and reciting groundhog poems.

The next round of LISEF will be March 10th. First place winners at round two will advance to the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair this May in Phoenix, Arizona.

The Charles Duggan Long Island Science and Engineering Fair (LISEF) is a competition for the most advanced high school projects; the participants in this fair have a chance to present to professionals in their subject areas from local universities, scientific institutions and professionals in the field. Presently, this fair is held over two days.

Selected for Symposium Four seniors in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District were recently selected as semifinalists for the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS).

Katherine Ratner and Brian Kishinevsky of Sanford H. Calhoun High School and Sarah Moussavi and Steven Obadiah of John F. Kennedy High School, all Advanced Science Research (ASR) students, will advance to the final round and present their research on February 7th.

Katherine’s topic is “Power Dissipation of Tropical Cyclones in the Atlantic Basin by SubRegion of Origin.”

“After watching the results of Hurricane Sandy, which was only a tropical storm when it made landfall in the northeast, I began to wonder if the current

rating for hurricanes was enough to predict the potential damage a storm could cause,” she said.

Katherine plans to major in Atmospheric Sciences at Cornell University in the fall.

“Because of ASR I have experience in the field I plan to spend my life working in, and confirmation that I want to pursue research,” Katherine added.

Brian’s topic is “Orbits of Curves on a 4 Holed Sphere.”

“I chose to research mathematics because math is fun,” he said. “Through my three years in the ASR program, I learned what science research really means: the hard work, the discussion of ideas and much paperwork.”

Sarah’s topic is “Metacognition and Confidence in a Perceptual Decision-Making Task.”

Sarah’s research at an oncological science lab over the summer intrigued her to find out how confident people feel about their decision, and she “investigated deeper to see if her subjects were aware of their own uncertainty.”

Steven’s topic is “The Manipulation of Microfilaments and Microtubules during Cotton Fiber Initiation.”

JSHS is designed to challenge and engage students (Grades 9-12) in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM).

Individual students compete for scholarships and recognition by presenting the results of their original research efforts before a panel of judges and an audience of their peers.

Shadow Day Even though Punxsutawney Phil failed to see his shadow on Groundhog Day, administrators and teachers from Wantagh School District’s three elementary schools happened to see the shadows of 32 enthusiastic high school students, who followed mentors throughout the school day.

The program is called Groundhog Shadow Day and is an opportunity for students to witness first-hand the skills they are learning in

school and which will eventually benefit them in the workplace.

Students are matched with administrators and teachers, which help them realize a connection between their studies and possible career goals. This day of shadowing can also help motivate the students to continue to succeed and to hone in on a possible teaching and school administration career.

“It is always rewarding when the high school students return from their experience in the

elementary schools with a new vision for their future,” said Kate Aymong, who has coordinated the event for the past 16 years.

“The high school students start to see and experience a connection between their studies and their career path.”

Student Kelly Fitzgerald said she is planning on becoming a teacher and said about her experience, “I’ve always been interested in teaching, but now I’m definitely looking into teaching on the elementary level.”

Gypsy Wantagh High School’s talented cast and crew drew a full house from February 3rd-6th during five performances of Jule Styne’s and Stephen Sondheim’s “Gypsy.”

Under the direction of Heather Romano and vocal director David Burt, the cast amused the audience with this tale about show business mother Rose, played by Judy Streib, and striptease artist Louise, a.ka. Gypsy Rose Lee, played by Kayla Bonasera.

Dylan Hubert, who played Herbie, was Rose’s love interest and the man who manages the act of Gypsy Rose.

The pit orchestra, under the baton of Dan Aviles, entertained theatergoers with sassy musical interludes, including “Let Me Entertain You,” “Everything’s Coming Up Roses,” and “Together, Wherever We Go.” Ms. Naughton, the teacher and director, said she is extremely proud of the studentactors’ performances. “It is a production that the community will surely remember for years to come,” she said.

Calhoun also had three partnerships, one place from medal contention.

Fifteen students will represent the district at the state competition on March 12th.

Calhoun Team Wins A team from Sanford H. Calhoun High School competed in the Rube Goldberg Machine Contest on February 6th, nabbing first place.

Hosted by the Cradle of Aviation Museum, the Rube Goldberg Machine Contest (RGMC) is an annual international competition that challenges teams of students from middle school to college age to compete in building the most elaborate and hilarious Rube Goldberg Machine.

A Rube Goldberg Machine is an overly complex contraption, designed with humor and a narrative, to accomplish a simple task.

This year’s challenge

was to open an umbrella.

Two teams from Calhoun competed. “News at 6” went in with a weather theme, and was made up of 10th-graders Taylor Curcio, Greg Scolieri, Matt Advocate, James Demirakos and Steven Manolios. It was their first time entering and they kept with a simple combination of raining day games to complete their challenge of opening up their umbrella.

Their machine includes dominos, pieces from a marble game, books, Jenga pieces, amongst other odds and ends. They had two very successful runs of their machine.

The second team, comprised of 10th-graders Joy Ma, Amelia Seabold

and James Caracciolo came together for their second year of the competition.

They started their Rube journey last year with no experience.

“This year they came back, committed to giving it their all,” said Jennifer Pefanis, director of the Calhoun Advanced Science Research Program. “They took on the team name ‘A Spoonful of Sugar,’ and they nailed the whimsical aspect of the competition with a Mary Poppinsthemed machine, costumes and even a matching skit.”

Their efforts earned them a first-place win and as part of their win, comes the honor of participating in nationals held in Wisconsin on April 23rd.

Message of Gratitude In the spirit of recognizing veterans’ contributions and sacrifices, Bellmore students at Shore Road School participated in the Town of Hempstead’s

Valentines for Veterans program, sponsored by the office of Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney.

Throughout the school, students crafted and decorated construction

paper hearts filled with messages of gratitude. The activity reminded students that veterans continue to defend the nation’s liberties and freedom.
