Boys Basketball Tournament St. Raphael CYO will host its 11th annual Winter Classic Boys Basketball Tournament for youth teams, 4-8 grade, from February 15th-25th at their parish gymnasium on 600 Newbridge Road in East Meadow. The tournament is one of the premier events on Long Island held in February at the culmination of the boys CYO campaign that has garnered rave reviews from coaches, parents and players in the

Nassau and Suffolk County communities. Championship Weekend begins February 24th with all semi-final matchups complete with a full light show, DJ music during timeouts and the introduction of starting lineups by St. Raphael CYO board members, to give the players a taste of their own “MSG basketball experience.” The national anthem is also sung live by local students and volunteers before each

game. Finally, Championship Sunday (February 25th) is a hoops extravaganza that features the five head-tohead title games to crown the winners in each bracket. A record 400 participants and 40 teams will participate to vie for first and second place trophies in each division. In addition, each player on all participating teams receives a commemorative t-shirt from this year’s

tournament. Raffle prizes, concessions and contests for kids attending the tournament are also a unique feature of the tournament for each and every game. For the youth basketball purist it is a well organized, fun-filled competitive tournament atmosphere you won’t want to miss. Follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ straphael.cyo to see pictures and video from last year’s 10th annual Winter

Classic! The gymnasium is also handicap accessible. For more information contact Dave Hudzik, St. Raphael CYO board member, by e-mailing inquiries to davehudzik@ gmail.com.

LEGALS TERMS OF SALE

Such tax liens shall be sold subject to any and all superior tax liens of sovereignties and other municipalities and to all claims of record which the County may have thereon and subject to the provisions of the Federal and State Soldier’s and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts. However, such tax liens shall have priority over the County’s Differential Interest Lien, representing the excess, if any, of the interest and penalty borne at the maximum rate over the interest and penalty borne at the rate at which the lien is purchased. The Purchaser acknowledges that the tax lien(s) sold pursuant to these Terms of Sale may be subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or may become subject to such proceedings which may be commenced during the period in which a lien is held by a successful bidder or the assignee of same, which may modify a Purchaser’s rights with respect to the lien(s) the property securing same. Such bankruptcy proceedings shall not affect the validity of the tax lien. In addition to being subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or the Federal and State Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts, said purchaser’s right of foreclosure may be affected by the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery and Enforcement Act (FIRREA), 12 U.S.C. ss 1811 et. seq., with regard to real property under Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) receivership. The County Treasurer reserves the right, without further notice and at any time, to withdraw from sale any of the parcels of land or premises herein listed. The rate of interest and penalty which any person purchases the tax lien shall be established by his bid. Each purchaser, immediately after the sale thereof, shall pay to the County Treasurer ten per cent of the amount from which the tax liens have been sold and the remaining ninety per cent within thirty days after such sale. If the purchaser at the tax sale shall fail to pay the remaining ninety per cent within ten days after he has been notified by the County Treasurer that the certificates of sale are ready for delivery, then all deposited with the County Treasurer including but not limited to the ten per cent theretofore paid by him shall, without further notice or demand, be irrevocably forfeited by the purchaser and shall be retained by the County Treasurer as liquidated damages and the agreement to purchase be of no further effect. Time is of the essence in this sale. This sale is held pursuant to the Nassau County Administrative Code and interested parties are referred to such Code for additional information as to terms of sale, rights of purchasers, maximum rates of interest and other legal incidents of the sale. Furthermore, as to the bidding, 1. The bidder(s) agree that they will not work with any other bidder(s) to increase, maintain or stabilize interest rates or collaborate with any other bidder(s) to gain an unfair competitive advantage in the random number generator in the event of a tie bid(s) on a tax certificate. Bidder(s) further agree not to employ any bidding strategy designed to create an unfair competitive advantage in the tiebreaking process in the upcoming tax sale nor work with any other bidder(s) to engage in any bidding strategy that will result in a rotational award of tax certificates. 2. The tax certificate(s) the Bidder will bid upon, and the interest rate(s) bid, will be arrived at independently and without direct or indirect consultation, communication or agreement with any other bidder and that the tax certificate(s) the Bidder will bid upon, and the interest rate(s) to be bid, have not been disclosed, directly or indirectly, to any other bidder, and will not be disclosed, directly or indirectly, to any other bidder prior to the close of bidding. No attempt has been made or will be made to, directly or indirectly, induce any other bidder to refrain from bidding on any tax certificate, to submit complementary bids, or to submit bids at specific interest rates. 3. The bids to be placed by the Bidder will be made in good faith and not pursuant to any direct or indirect, agreement or discussion with, or inducement from, any other bidder to submit a complementary or other noncompetitive bid. 4. If it is determined that the bidder(s) have violated any of these bid requirements then their bid shall be voided and if they were the successful bidder the lien and any deposits made, in connection with, said bid shall be forfeited. This list includes only tax liens on real estate located in Town of Hempstead. Wonders of Weather Summit Lane kindergarten students in Kathryn Stewart’s class visited the Outdoor Learning Center at the Levittown Memorial Education Center on January 25th to further their knowledge on the seasons, weather, greenhouses and the environment. Elementary students throughout the Levittown Public Schools visit the center during the year to engage in handon activities and lessons relating to the sciences. Under the guidance of Outdoor Learning Center teacher Jessica Mills, the students each received a weather journal and spoke about the weather outside using their five senses. They also learned how to utilize various weather tools such as the thermometer. The class ventured outside with clipboards in hand to study outdoor tools such as a weather vane and rain gauge. They recorded

their observations in their journals. In addition, students had the opportunity to go inside a greenhouse, filled with different plants and vegetables. Mills led the kindergartners around the greenhouse while describing what it contained. Among the vegetation, they learned about the banana tree and fresh snap peas. Before heading back inside the center, the class stopped by the pond and observed the frozen water. While in the classroom, students received goggles and studied the effect of a pine cone in wet versus dry weather. Mills explained to students that you can tell the weather by looking at a pine cone and seeing if it is open or closed. The kindergartners then had the opportunity to use their magnifying glasses and microscopes to get a closer look at their pine cones.

Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can! There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance to succeed. You can visit their website at www.HopeChildrensFund.org or contact Kevin Mann at KevinMannMail@gmail. com to learn more and view photos of

these children. Upon sponsorship, you will receive a photo and bio of the child you chose to sponsor. You will be able to write letters or send e-mails directly to the child to provide them with hopeful messages! Kevin and his wife often travel to Meru to visit the orphanage and welcome sponsors to travel along to meet firsthand the child they sponsor. Another way you can become involved is by hosting a craft fair right here on Long Island to sell Kenyan crafts made by the Meru Women’s Collective. You will be provided with the goods, and all the profits generated will go back to the children at the orphanage. Contact Kevin Mann for more information. On Febraury 18th, Hope Children’s Fund will host its first Gala at East Wind in Wading River! All are welcome to attend and enjoy a night out to support this charity and its cause. The Gala will include dinner, a unique art auction, music by the band X-Sessions and a possible Skype call with the children at their orphanage in Meru. Contact Kevin Mann to purchase your tickets now ($200/person) and be a part of something that truly matters!

Centro Cultural Hispano ~ Oyster Bay www.cchoben.org This non-profit works towards the educational, social and economic development of the Hispanic community of Oyster Bay, East Norwich and surrounding areas. They are seeking volunteers to help students at their after-school program from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Oyster Bay. For most of these students, English is not the first language spoken at home and, as a result, their parents do not understand English sufficiently enough to help them with their schoolwork. Volunteers will work one-on-one with children from K-6 with homework, reading and writing. Please contact Johanna Velasquez at 516.558.7020 or at office@cchoben.org to volunteer! Coloring Creation Members of the W.T. Clarke High School National Art Honor Society, in the East Meadow School District, illustrated coloring books for patients in the Nassau University Medical Center Pediatric Unit. NAHS members collaborated after school to draw, organize and assemble images for 200 coloring books. This year’s theme for the project,

which is undertaken annually by the NAHS, was seasons and nature, inspiring contour-lined drawings of landscapes, marine life and other animals. Each coloring book will be accompanied by a new box of crayons, donated through the NAHS’s crayon drive that is running in February. “Do not read, as children do, to amuse yourself; or, like the ambitious, for the purpose of instruction. No, read in order to live.” ~ Gustave Flaubert Winter being one of those seasons best suited for indoor activities, I have recently taken up the hobby of reading; well, by taken up, I mean I have ordered several selections with the intent of reading them (hopefully) before spring arrives. I always say I want to read at least one book a month; generally, this amounts to a single magazine, perhaps a chapter or two of a cast-aside novel from several years ago… rarely do I seem to make any considerable progress in this literary department. This year, on New Year’s Day in fact, I made it my mission to use one of my holiday gift cards to order a handful of the “classics” - The Wind in

the Willows, Walden, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, and Wuthering Heights - a veritable collection straight from the pages of an old English department syllabus. Some, I had read bits and pieces of years ago; others, I had always wanted to peruse more thoroughly, but had never taken the opportunity to dive into. Of course, nearly six weeks later, and I have yet to make it past the introduction to The Wind in the Willows. An hour a night, I told myself. Simple. Just make it a habit, and the pages will fly by, I theorized. This is recreational reading - no obligation, no required deadline. Read at your leisure, because you want to. And still, somehow, the pile of books remains virtually untouched. Perhaps I should join a book club. Maybe I need the structure, the faux “assignment” to push me

along. Nightly chapter summaries, on the teacher’s desk by morning! But, in all seriousness, it is truly remarkable how difficult we find the task of simply enriching our lives in a cultural sense. Binge a series on Netflix over the course of a few days? Not a problem. Spend hours mindlessly browsing social media? Done. Priorities, indeed. As much as I never thought I would wish for winter to prolong, I am somewhat glad that another month remains to tackle this self-imposed task. Five weeks, to be precise. One book per week or so. Doable? Sure, with the proper focus. Such is the extent of my winter “To Do” list. Not a bad way to spend an evening. Don’t worry, dear readers, you shall have a full report of my progress - or lack thereof by next month. {Side note: they still make Cliff Notes, right?}

WINTER! Oh wonderful winter! Grab your family, come to Woodloch, reconnect, have way too much fun, make ‘forever’ memories. Rates start at $119 per person midweek*

Sleep Better, Stress Less (NAPSI)-Here’s eyeopening news: Recently published research from Oklahoma State University suggests that improving quality of sleep not only reduces stress, but also helps us manage everyday

stress. “When you’re stressed and tired, every aspect of your life is affected,” says lifestyle expert and spokesperson for the Better Sleep Council, Lissa Coffey. “Controlling stress

and getting a good night’s rest start with evaluating your lifestyle.” Dr. Douglas MacKay, N.D., vice president, scientific and regulatory affairs, Council for Responsible Nutrition,

agrees: “Eating a healthy diet, taking vitamins and other supplements, exercising regularly and getting adequate amounts of sleep are all part of a healthy lifestyle.” Here are more tips to

help you sleep better and stress less: 1. Eat a well-balanced diet. 2. Take your vitamins, including a daily multivitamin. Ask your doctor about other

supplements, like valerian, for healthy sleep. 3. Evaluate your mattress--consider replacing it if it’s five to seven years old or older.

Olympic-Sized

As part of their English language arts curriculum, sixth-graders at Woodland Middle School in the East Meadow School District recently took part in the Festival Games. The educational event was inspired by “The Lightning Thief,” the first novel in Rick Riordan’s “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” series. The entire sixth-grade class divided into four teams representing famous Greek gods – Ares, Athena, Hades and Poseidon – to take part in activities similar to those Percy Jackson takes on in his mythical adventures. Adding authentic flair

to the event, each team created flags, cabins, amusement park rides and statues related to their god. The teams could earn points for these items, in addition to the points earned in the games, based on their creativity and originality. Designated the Cloven Council of Elders, the judges of these novelties consisted of Woodland staff and administrators not associated with the day’s festivities. Kicking the games off, the students competed for the best costume award dressed as gnomes and displayed their amusement park rides in the Garden Gnome Emporium. They

went on to test their knowledge of everything Greek in the “It’s All Greek to Me” trivia competition. Following, the four teams contended for superiority in a game of Capture the Flag and challenged each other’s mathematical prowess during the “I Should Have Vaporized My Math Teacher” event. They concluded the day with “Olympian Family Feud,” where they tried to figure out seventh-graders’ most popular answers to questions based on Riordan’s novel. At the end of the games, Team Hades was awarded a trophy for earning the most points.

On February 1st, members of the BellmoreMerrick Central School District’s Wellington C. Mepham School and Community Leadership class attended the 32nd annual Human Rights

Conference at Adelphi University and presented a workshop, “Targeted Teens: Discrimination and Diversity in our Schools.” “Over the course of three sessions, five leaders at a time, led

workshop attendees through a 50-minute interactive experience that challenged participants to consider what stereotyping, prejudice and discrimination are, where we find them in

23

Student Presentation our schools, and how we can combat them in our schools,” explained Social Studies Chairperson Robyn Einbinder. Through small group discussion and large group debrief, the participants engaged in conversations

about what a judgmentfree society looks like, how they could prevent discrimination from spreading, how they can change their school to be more accepting toward others, and how they can prevent themselves from

judging a book by its cover? While only 15 members of the senior class actually presented, all 24 students, along with social studies teacher Jacqueline Geller, developed the workshop.

In the Zone In its second Vex Robotics “In the Zone” qualifying tournament of the school year, held in Carle Place on January 27th, the Wantagh High School Robotics Team went undefeated and earned the Tournament Champion Award. On January 7th, the team’s robot A placed first, followed with a win with robot B on January 27th. The team has now qualified with both robots to compete in the Vex Robotics Southern New York State Championship

Tournament, to be held on March 3rd in Katonah, New York. “What is noteworthy about the Wantagh High School Robotics Team is that we have competed in only two tournaments so far this year, and we have won both of them,” said teacher John Walsh. During a Vex Robotics tournament, studentcompetitors employ science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills to design and build a robot

to play against other teams of students in a game-based challenge. This year’s competition theme is “In the Zone,” and the objectives during the qualifier competitions required the teams to design and build a robot with the ability to pick up mobile goal posts, stack cones on the posts and then place the mobile posts in the field corner. An additional objective required the robot to stack cones on a stationary goal post.
