Parents and family, Central Office administrators and Board of Education trustees attended the Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Center’s 30th annual Culinary Showcase in the Panther Room at Levittown Memorial Education Center on January 15th. The annual event is an opportunity for the culinary students to demonstrate their skills in the kitchen and for guests to enjoy a delicious meal.

Teaching assistant Lillian Creedon explained to the guests that the showcase is an opportunity for the culinary students, whether they cooked the meal or waited the tables, to get their feet wet. “I truly believe that they are learning skills that will assist them in their career,” Ms. Creedon said.

Under the direction of Chef William Samboy and Assistant Dave Cummo, the students prepared a meal of prime rib, baked potatoes and mixed vegetables, preceded by a salad with homemade dressing and cheesecake and chocolatedipped strawberries for dessert.

Levittown’s GC Tech culinary/food services program is a two-year program in which students are instructed in the fundamentals of cooking, baking and wait staff/hospitality. Culinary menu planning, food science and health and safety procedures are major components of the program, and students practice their skills daily in the school’s modern commercial kitchen and bakery. This year, the program has implemented

an iPad Point of Sale system to assist students in employment-ready restaurant skills.

While enrolled in the culinary/food services program, students prepare and serve meals to the public, experiment with different recipes and bake and design pastries and cakes. The students can earn the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation’s five-year ServeSafe certification and are employable in a variety of food service establishments. Students may also continue their culinary studies and can apply for internship and apprenticeship credits with educational institutions with which GC Tech has articulation agreements.

Intel Finalist

Gathered alongside fellow Advanced Science Research (ASR) students and teachers at John F. Kennedy High School, senior Rachel Mashal was named an Intel Science Talent Search Finalist on January 20th. “[This program] has transformed me as a person,” said Mashal.

“I’ve always been a hard worker, but this program pushed me to my complete potential.”

During the three-year

ASR program, Rachel was able to conduct graduate school-level work. Mashal said she conducted her own statistical analysis and oversaw her own experiments while her mentor, with whom she studied at LIU Post, was away. Her work is on “The Development of a Caffeine Addiction Paradigm to Examine How Dietary Restriction and Level of TOR Signaling Modulate the Effects of Drugs.”

“I was able to look at the underlying biology, chemistry and genetics of these mental illnesses using fruit flies,” Mashal explained. “I looked at the way that a certain genetic pathway, as well as diet, affects propensity for addiction and the ability to withstand drug toxicity.”

Mashal is among the top 40 young scientists to be chosen in the nation out of an initial 1,750 entrants. Each finalist will be rewarded at least $7,500. She will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. from March 10-16, where she will compete for more than $1 million in awards.

Chess Nuts a month to try to master the game, receiving 10 minutes of instruction and 20 minutes of playing time in lieu of recess.

Mr. Shanbhag explained that chess broadens a student’s horizons and helps to develop abstract

thinking. “The student has to outthink his or her opponent,” Mr. Shanbhag said. “Every move helps the students to visualize and solve a problem, so he or she can devise a counteraction.”

Tops in Geography For the third consecutive year, Wantagh Middle School eighth-grade student William Hostetter is the winner of the schoollevel competition for the National Geographic Bee. Eighth-grader Jenna Miller placed second.

Bellmore School District science consultant and retired teacher Brian Wallrapp engaged fourth-grade students at Winthrop Avenue School in numerous experiments that demonstrated the forces of magnetism, static electricity and electromagnetism.

The dynamic class reviewed science principles

taught in class and helped to prepare students for state testing this spring in a fun-filled and informative way.

Wallrapp, who calls himself Magnet Man, taught students that all matter is made of atoms, where electricity comes from, how magnets repel and attract and how the human body can conduct

electricity. Using salt and a balloon, students rubbed the balloon on each other’s hair to lift the salt, an experiment to demonstrate static electricity.

The students also formed a human circuit to light a bulb and learned how a plasma globe transfers energy from one location inside the glass to another.

Several classroom winners participated in Sanford H. Calhoun’s school-wide Poetry Out Loud competition on January 12th.

Senior Bianca Liriano of Dr. Wiener’s class, who recited “Invictus,” came in first place and senior Blake Fisher from Ms. Rosslee’s

class, who recited “Four Glimpses of Night,” earned second place. Both have qualified to move on to the regional competition in February.

Winter is coming. Winter is coming. So the humans have been saying for the last three months, and yet… only now, in the final week of January, have I gotten to witness firsthand this magical white stuff in action.

And what a beauty it is, even from the confines of my tiny betta bowl.

Swirling snowflakes, blowing through the air, piling up outside my window to the outside world… and my human, fervently shoveling out her electric blue car – what a fine color it is, I might add – as the wind whips across the parking lot.

But still, the opportunity

to hibernate with my human for an entire weekend, to have her undivided attention while we relaxed together and watched Netflix on the couch – that was priceless.

We just finished Season 1 of House of Cards and I’m already, excuse the pun, “hooked.”

I must admit, I didn’t understand the obsession with scouring the stores for every last container of milk, carton of eggs and loaf of bread at first. But then I realized the horror of not being able to make French toast for an entire day, and I understood the magnitude of such a storm and the havoc it could wreak on the masses. Just the thought of a day without flakes was

Under the direction of music teacher Randi Andersen, students performed a compilation of tunes that reflected the customs of Scotland, France, Italy, Africa, Australia and the United

Andersen explained that the theme of the concert, “A Trip Around the World,” alluded that people across the world are not all that different. “We all speak different languages, but we all smile in the same language,” she noted. “And the whole world loves to sing.”

and commitment, which showed during the stellar program. She also explained that the music was more complicated, because the students sang in rounds and in foreign languages. The roster of songs included “Loch Lomond” (Scotland), “Vive La France” (France), “Funiculi, Funicula” (Italy), “Jambo Bwana” (Africa) and “Party in the U.S.A.”

Add to that the hazards of commuting, and it’s no wonder humans have so much anxiety at the first forecast of a flake. Me, I have trouble navigating around my plant when the water gets a little cloudy.

I have the frayed fins to prove it.

I understand this may be only the beginning of the winter weather. So far, not so bad. I’m just keeping my fins crossed that there are no major storms headed this way for February 16th – my very first betta birthday in my human’s home. SBA Deadline

The U.S. Small Business Administration is reminding small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small aquaculture businesses and most private nonprofit organizations in New York of the deadline to submit disaster loan applications for economic injury caused by the apartment building fire on April 10th. The deadline to apply for a working capital disaster loan is February 19th.

“Businesses that suffered economic losses as a result of the disaster and want to apply for low-interest loans from the SBA are urged to do so before the February 19th deadline,” said Frank Skaggs, director of SBA Field Operations Center East.

Low-interest disaster loans are available in the counties of Albany, Columbia, Greene, Rensselaer, Saratoga and Washington in New York; Berkshire in Massachusetts and Bennington in Vermont.

Man of Character In the East Meadow School District, Bowling Green Elementary School fourth-graders in Vera Zinnel’s class honored Martin Luther King, Jr. by defining the content of their character.

examined the well-known line of hoping that children will be judged on the content of their character instead of the color of their skin.

Students wrote essays interpreting Dr. King’s words, explained the reason they want to be

judged by the content of their character and provided examples of their character. Among the essays, students wanted to be judged by being responsible, caring, funny, helpful, brave and creative instead of their outside appearance.

“We got to help the patients that were there

on that day but also help the ones in the future by decorating their bulletin boards in their rooms,” said student Emma Davie.

Students also engaged in arts and crafts with a patient and organized all the toys collected during the holiday season.

A Cappella Visit East Broadway Elementary students in Levittown learned about singing in an a cappella music group during a performance in their school by female singers from the State University of New York at Binghamton.

The Binghamton a cappella group performed several popular songs heard

on the radio and explained that a cappella is a form of choral music that does not use instruments, but instead utilizes their voices as instruments. Principal Jeanmarie Wink invited the girls to sing, because her niece, Emily Baldwin, is part of the Binghamton A Cappella group.

told the students that singing in a choral group is fun. “It is cool that you can go to college and study anything that you want and still enjoy music,” she said.

The group also explained that, like anything you are passionate about, you must work hard.

Charlie constructed a canopy over benches in the gardens of the East Meadow Senior Center, while Matthew built sturdy shelves for the food pantry at Saint Frances de Chantal Church in Wantagh. He also held a food drive to help stock the shelves.

In the East Meadow School District, Woodland Middle School students participated in a variety of interactive team building activities.

During students’ lunch periods, the Social Emotional Learning club held a Disney themed “Mix It Up Day” for sixth- and seventh-graders to meet new people, further develop

The Ambassador Program in BellmoreMerrick Central High School District, a districtwide, studentled think tank, recently organized a day of service that was completed in conjunction with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday.

“We wanted to incorporate Dr. King’s beliefs into the BellmoreMerrick values,” explained Social Studies Chairperson and faculty advisor Robyn Einbinder.

Created in March of 2014, student ambassadors from the district’s four high schools and two middle schools join together throughout the school year to address issues impacting the student body and surrounding community. They work closely with teachers and administrators to achieve district goals, thus fostering the “One Voice One Message” initiative.

Students and staff hatched the day of service concept after careful consideration.

“They organized the day of service by researching the needs of nearby shelters following the holidays,” said Dr. Mara Bollettieri, assistant superintendent of personnel and faculty advisor to the program.

“It was very important to our students to identify the needs, gather the donations, write personal notes and then deliver the items to the shelters.”

Beginning in midDecember, each grade was assigned specific items that were collected, organized and packaged.

The community was encouraged to donate as well.

Mid-year replenishments of school supplies, winter weather gear and pajamas were among the items collected for families in need.

The students brainstormed at meetings how to get the initiative’s message out to fellow students and the community.

“It’s important for your peers to see you and hear this from you,” said Neil Testa, assistant principal of Sanford H. Calhoun High School.

Calhoun student Maribel Sabino suggested utilizing social media and connecting with local philanthropy groups. The Lions Club presented the program with more than $1,000 in MetroCards for those in need to travel to work.

“We are the heart of this program,” said Sara Samir, another Calhoun student.

“And we need to tell students how passionate we are about this,” added Quinn Chao, a student at Calhoun.

Testa also compiled a video, which was shown to students across the district, explaining the goal of the Ambassador Program.

On January 14th and 15th, 5,600 students throughout the district

used their physical education class periods to package donated items into drawstring bags.

“You made an impact today,” Superintendent of Schools John DeTommaso told a group of students.

“You made someone’s day.

I am so proud, so humbled and so inspired by all you have done to make this day a reality.”

Students worked in groups to fill bags with essentials and included a handwritten note that offered an inspirational quote from Dr. King.

“The letters that the students are writing are very heartfelt, and the families who are in need are really going to appreciate them,” said Wellington C. Mepham High School student Mike Pioli.

The following Saturday, students and staff transported the goods to shelters and other social services agencies, including the Rosa Parks Inn, Bethany House and Little Flower. Supplies were also redistributed to local families in the community.

“Today was the result of the passion, hard work and efforts of our district ambassadors, leadership classes, the entire district staff and the One Voice One Message Committee, along with the generosity of our community,” said Dr. Bollettieri. “These students have been an inspiration to their peers and all of us around them.”

Students Compete Students in Grand Avenue and Merrick Avenue middle schools showed off their spelling skills as they vied for the title of school-wide spelling bee champion. Competing through numerous rounds, seventhand eighthgraders spelled countless words of increasing complexity. On January 12th, Grand Avenue eighthgrader Josh Levy took top honors with “pneumonia” in the 13th round of

competition.

Eighthgrader, Carly Abramowitz, was the runner up in that competition.

At Merrick Avenue on January 13th, eighthgrader Katherine St. George was named the first-place winner after spelling the championship word “deglutition” correctly. Eighth-grader Charles Berin proved to be tough competition as this bee also lasted 13 rounds.

Prior to the school-

wide competitions, students competed in their individual English classes, with representatives from each class moving on to the school level bee.

Both school winners will progress to the Hofstra University Long Island Regional Scripps Spelling Bee on March 13th.

The winner of the Long Island competition will compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

Kickoff Event The Helen Keller National Center for DeafBlind Youths & Adults (HKNC) jump-started its annual Helen’s Run/Walk this week with a kick-off breakfast at its Sands Point headquarters.

Dozens and dozens of community residents and participants from previous years gathered to brainstorm and collect registration materials

for this year’s Helen’s Run/Walk, which will take place on Sunday, April 17th, at the Sands Point Preserve. Words of inspiration were provided by HKNC Assistant Program Coordinator Maricar Marquez, followed by insights on getting healthy and motivated from nutritional health counselor and Sands Point resident Sara Siskind.

During his performance, Magician Fields traveled back to Egypt introducing the history of numbers, counting and multiplication.

Throughout his performance, Magician Fields incorporated mathematical skills such as adding, subtracting and multiplying with each trick.

into small classes based on experience level and received instruction from two or three teachers, who were Wantagh alumni studying or experienced in coding.

Beginners were introduced to MIT’s Scratch, an easy-to-learn programming language designed for new coders of all ages. Intermediatelevel students received an introduction to the Python programming language, an intuitive yet powerful language utilized in fields ranging from scientific computing to artificial intelligence.

Advanced students were introduced to Java, one of the world’s most popular programming languages, and were taught Android mobile application development. During a mid-day assembly, the students also learned about the fast-growing fields of data science and biotechnology, which combine applied elements of mathematics and computer science to acquire practical insights and knowledge from large amounts of data.

“The goal of Tech Day

is to expose Wantagh students to programming and advance their knowledge of existing and emerging computer technologies, making them better equipped for the future,” said Penny Curry, the district’s director of information systems and instructional technology.

Mountanos first learned to code while conducting particle physics research at Brookhaven National Laboratory. He is currently studying data science and mathematics at New York University. He is also a data scientist at Credit Suisse, where he analyzes financial markets.

Tech Day co-founder Daniel Charytonowicz discovered programming while conducting neuroimaging research at NYU Medical Center.

He is pursuing computer science in his biomedical engineering studies at the University of Delaware. He will be attending medical school at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City following graduation.

The third annual Wantagh Tech Day was held on January 9th at Wantagh High School, during which about 130 Wantagh School District students in grades 5-12 expanded their knowledge of game programming, app development, data science and robotics. The goal of the event was to introduce students to computer science, a field expected to grow rapidly over the next decade.

Tech Day co-founder, district alumnus and current Board of Education member, Peter Mountanos, explained that today’s students are surrounded by highly sophisticated technology such as iPads, iPhones, tablets and laptops. “These devices are all controlled by code, yet most students don’t have an understanding or appreciation for how these devices work,” he said.

During the weekend event, students were exposed to computer science through a projectoriented day, during which they learned and utilized a broad array of skills. They were organized

At this time of year, parents are registering their four-year-olds for kindergarten in the fall.

They may be asking themselves “will my child be ready?” Answers to that question can be found in a one-page handout from the Long Island Pre-K Initiative. This free resource lists the top 20 skills that kindergarten teachers expect on the first day of school. It can be downloaded from the grant-funded program’s website: www.nassauboces. org/pre-k, and is available in Spanish, Urdu, Turkish, Chinese and HaitianCreole, as well as in English.

In the East Meadow School District, Meadowbrook Elementary School held a towel drive to help the Interfaith Nutrition Network (INN) in Hempstead. The school-

wide drive encouraged students, faculty, teachers and administration to donate new towels. A total donation of 50 new towels were given to the INN. The INN serves the

homeless community on Long Island providing them with food, shelter, long-term housing and supportive services.

That means that kindergarteners should be able to share and take turns, express their feelings in words and participate in a conversation without interrupting, among other abilities. It is difficult for learning to take place when children have difficulty getting along with each other - or can’t sit still long enough to listen to a story being read. Also on the list: pre-reading skills; everyday skills, such as using the bathroom by themselves; and being able to identify numbers and colors.

The Long Island Pre-K Initiative survey was conducted in the spring of 2015. The teachers came from the following 10 school districts: Amityville, Franklin

Square, Harborfields, Levittown, Long Beach, Middle Country, North Merrick, Valley Stream #13, Uniondale and Wyandanch. Some survey questions were based on an earlier survey of teachers in Westbury that was conducted by The Early Years Institute.

The Long Island Pre-K Initiative is a grant-funded project that seeks to strengthen relationships between school districts and community-based organizations, and to share information about research, policy and best practices for early learning.

Administered by Nassau BOCES, it is supported by expertise from The Early Years Institute and funds from the Rauch and Hagedorn Foundations.

Its partners are the Eastern and Western Suffolk BOCES and the Child Care Councils of Nassau and Suffolk.

Caring For Older Adults (NAPSI)—With a growing aging population, the amount of family caregivers in the United States is also on the rise. There are nearly 45 million people who serve as a caregiver for a family member or friend who is 50 or older. Serving as a caregiver can be rewarding

but difficult.

Often, caregivers are unaware of local aging resources that might be able to assist them.

The Eldercare Locator is a free, public service that connects older adults and caregivers to information about local resources and services such as

meal delivery programs, transportation options, home modification assistance and inhome support services.

Additionally, caregivers can find out about support groups in their community and programs that offer a break from caregiving responsibilities.

Pope Francis summed up the Church’s commitment to education when he said, “Our generation will show that it can rise to the promise found in each young person…. This means that we have to create the material and spiritual conditions for their full development; to give them a solid basis on which to build their lives; to guarantee their safety and their education to be everything they can be…”

Today, the “material and spiritual conditions” the Pope referred to are embodied in 47 beautiful elementary schools here on Long Island. Each school provides the safety and nurturing atmosphere that assures children they matter, that they are loved, and all of the schools strive to work with every student to help them achieve all they are capable of achieving. Yet some parents who desire the extraordinary results of a Catholic education still hesitate because of concerns about costs.

Families who would like to consider a Catholic education are encouraged to visit a school during

Excellence (ASE), the group that tests and certifies automotive technicians.

schools. Business leader and philanthropist Lewis S. Ranieri was appointed

by Bishop Murphy to chair the foundation. As chairman, Mr. Ranieri put together a prominent board of professionals, business leaders and diocesan administration with the goal of raising money from individual and corporate donors and providing tuition assistance for deserving families and students.

Over the past ten years, the Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation has served the Long Island community by providing parents with the opportunity to choose the education that best fits the needs of their children without the worry of financial constraint.

With generous support from private and corporate donors, the Foundation has proudly served over 17,000 students, providing awards totaling nearly $20 million towards scholarships, and allowing them to attend one of Long Island’s 47 excellent Catholic elementary schools.

Tuition assistance through Tomorrow’s Hope is available to all families

who show a financial need, regardless of ethnicity or religious affiliation. Not surprisingly, the applicants for Tomorrow’s Hope assistance are from a variety of different backgrounds that represent the diversity of our Island. The common thread is a desire for an education of the whole child, in mind, body and spirit.

Tomorrow’s Hope supporters come from every walk of life, and they donate in a variety of ways; directly, where any amount large or small is appreciated, they donate through matching programs offered by their employers, and they bequeath portions of their estate to help fund Catholic education. The program that gets the most feedback, however, is the STAR Program. The Student Tuition Assistance Relationship (STAR) Program identifies students in high need of tuition assistance and matches them with a generous donor - a ‘STAR’ who contributes tuition assistance of $2,000 a year. Although tuition varies across the Diocese, this program is intended

The STAR donor-student relationship is a special one it consists of correspondence between the student and the donor throughout the school year. This relationship is unique in that the donor can see first-hand how their generous contribution directly helps their STAR student to thrive in Catholic elementary school.

The Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation orchestrates a number of charitable events during the course of each year including a Gala social event in the spring, a golf outing in the fall, and a holiday event around Christmas. This year, there will even be a new event, the St. Joseph 5K Fun Run for Tomorrow’s Hope, on March 19th.

Building on the success of their inaugural event last March where over 350 runners participated, the St Joseph School in Garden City announced that this year’s race will benefit Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation. Running on a 5K circuit through the

flat, fast, tree-lined streets of Garden City, the race will be professionally chip timed and is USA Track and Field Certified. Appropriate for both serious runners, and for those who just want to come out and have some fun while supporting this worthwhile cause, the event will offer a post race festival with a DJ, face painting, refreshments and age category awards for the 5K. There will also be a 1-mile untimed fun run to allow every child to finish. Every child in the fun run will receive a prize.
