For 25 years, Levittown Community Council has brought fun, joy and happiness to the community through its well-attended and anticipated WinterFest event.

This year’s celebration will take place on Saturday, February 10th from 11 AM to 3 PM at the Island Trees Public Library located at 38 Farmedge Road, Levittown. Admission to the event is free and there is entertainment, a magic

show, crafts and games for children and raffles for the adults.

On board each year and a highlight of the event is a model train display offered by the Nassau Lionel Operating Engineers. Local schools and performers provide additional entertainment and community businesses offer fun activities.

WinterFest originated as a Levittown 50th Anniversary event, which was adopted by the Council

since the year after when all the anniversary events were adopted by community organizations.

Levittown Lions Club will provide free eye screening at the event as they have in previous years.

Mercy Soup Kitchen Seeking Volunteers It is an exciting time at the Mercy Soup Kitchen of Wyandanch as it is preparing to launch its new and expanded post Covid operation.

Located in the basement of Trinity Lutheran Church at 17 South 20th Street, the Kitchen served its first meal to hungry people in 1980 and currently serves an average of 108 people per day.

During the pandemic, however, Kitchen procedures had to be modified in order to provide hot, nourishing meals safely and continuously to those in need.

Indoor sit-down dining was discontinued and only take-out dining

was available.

But today the Kitchen is posing for a postCovid reopening – a reorganizational rebirth of sorts – where Kitchen procedures can finally return to again offering guests dignified, indoor sit-down dining.

The Kitchen relies heavily on its generous volunteer support and, as such, numerous onsite and off-site volunteer opportunities are now available.

While there are openings for on-site positions, such as helping to prepare and serve meals and to perform various maintenance functions, there are also openings for diverse off-site

positions in areas such as finance, grant development and preparation, legal compliance assurance, marketing duties, social media facilitation and fund raising/donation coordination.

Only with the efforts of its volunteers can the Kitchen succeed in its mission to provide food security to those in need.

Exhibiting in a solo show at the Levittown Library during the month of January is Louise Cassano, a longtime resident of Levittown.

A former awardwinning news reporter, editor and entrepreneur with degrees in Fine Arts, American Studies and Communication Arts, Louise believes that art is a form of communication.

In the past few years, Cassano has transitioned from her home-based public relations business, LuCas Communications, to enjoying the opportunity to pursue her life’s dream as an artist.

This is Cassano’s third art show at Levittown Library in recent years. She enjoys the opportunity to exhibit her work for a period of time, which affords viewers the opportunity to view her work in a leisurely way, which, she says, is the way art should be viewed.

Drawing and painting has been a hobby and pastime for Cassano for her entire life. She calls her recent ventures into painting her “retirement plan”. She is owner and principal of LuCas Communications, a Levittown-based public relations business started in 1994.

Cassano is actively involved in the Levittown community. She is one of the original founders of Levittown Community Council for which she served as charter president.

Levittown has been her home since she was in third grade at Abbey Lane School. She’s a graduate of Levittown Memorial High School and serves

Windows of the World - mixed media on the board of the Levittown Chamber of Commerce since 1994 when she started her business.

She and her husband Mauro moved into a cape cod home when they married in 1964 and they’ve raised their two sons, Joseph and Andrew, who attended Levittown elementary schools and are graduates of Chaminade High School.

Mauro is a retired

professor of mathematics at Nassau Community College, who handles all of the matting and framing and photographing of her art work. She calls him her “indispensable resource” and insists that her exhibits are as much his as hers.

The current exhibit is at Levittown Public Library, 1 Bluegrass Lane, Levittown throughout the month of January.

The glass flowers of Dave Chihuly was the inspiration for a fifth grade art project at Wantagh Elementary School.

Students made colorful designs on Shrinky Dink clear plastic sheets, then cut

out their unusual shapes. Art teacher Taylor Potish then placed the creations over a bowl and used a heat gun to mold them into 3D objects resembling flowers. The finished products were then hung on a bulletin board

across from the art room to create a flower garden.

“My fifth graders were very excited to emulate the work of famous glass-blowing artist Dave Chihuly,” Ms. Potish said. “It’s been a very fun project for them.”

Nachos Make The Ideal Game Day Snack

ame watches with fellow fans, family and friends are a great way to make playoff football even more enjoyable. With so many big games on the horizon, football fans would be wise to ready their culinary arsenal. Whether you’re hosting at home or going to a game watch at a fellow fan’s house, keep in mind that food and football are a great match.

Certain dishes have long since staked their claim on the game watch dinner and snacking tables, and nachos certainly need no introduction to football fans. As this year’s playoffs kick off, football fans can try this recipe for “Loaded Beef Nachos” courtesy of AllRecipes.com.

Loaded Beef Nachos Serves 4

Taco Seasoning: 5 teaspoons paprika 1 1⁄4

teaspoons garlic powder

1 1⁄4

teaspoons ground cumin

1 1⁄4

teaspoons onion powder

1 teaspoon chili powder 1 teaspoon oregano leaves 1 1⁄2

teaspoons salt

2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 pound ground beef 1 cup diced onion 1 cup diced green bell pepper 1 10-ounce can diced tomatoes with green chiles (such as RO-TEL®) 1 15-ounce can Mexican-style corn (optional) 1 16-ounce can refried beans 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese, or as needed

Directions:

4 ounces tortilla chips, or as needed

For taco seasoning: Stir paprika, garlic powder, cumin, onion powder, chili powder, oregano,

Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat; cook and stir ground beef in the hot skillet

1⁄2 cup sour cream (optional) 1⁄2 cup salsa (optional) 1⁄4 cup sliced black olives (optional) 1⁄4 cup sliced jalapeños (optional) 1⁄4 cup green onion

and salt together in a small bowl; set aside.

until browned and crumbly, 5 to 7 minutes. Stir in onion and green pepper; cook and stir with oil and juices from browned meat until much of the liquid has evaporated, about 2 minutes more.

Stir 1⁄2 can diced tomatoes with chilies and Mexican-style corn into skillet. Season beef mixture to taste with prepared taco seasoning mix.

Stir together the remaining 1⁄2 can diced tomatoes with chilies and refried beans in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high until heated through, stirring every 30 seconds, 1 to 3 minutes.

To assemble nachos: Lay half of tortilla chips in a single layer on a microwave-safe plate, then drop teaspoons of refried beans onto chips, followed by meat mixture and shredded cheese.

Repeat with remaining chips, beans, meat, and cheese to make a second layer.

Microwave on high until cheese is melted and nachos are warm, 2 to 3 minutes. Top with sour cream, salsa, olives, jalapeños, and green onion as desired.

Salk’s Pod Squad Gets The Word Out Principal John Zampaglione said that the goal is to have 100% of Salk students participate in at least one extracurricular activity, so the building administrators and teachers continually look for ways to expand offerings that meet student

interests. That’s how the Pod Squad started, when sixth grade teacher Michele DiLevo heard her students having a spirited debate about the Giants and Jets, and wanted to give them a more formal outlet to talk about topics they care about.

Ms. DiLevo, now the adviser of Pod Squad, and several students presented at the board meeting. They talked about the different podcasts they produce, which focus on a wide variety of topics such as animals, Legos, sports and video games. There is

even a podcast dedicated to getting to know Salk students and staff a little better.

“They want to talk about what they’re passionate about,” she said.

Students are involved in all aspects of podcast production, from planning

a show, to recording, to editing. They enjoy adding music and sound effects.

Pod Squad members have also been doing audio recording of children’s books, which they hope to share with the elementary schools in the future.

Five Bellmore-Merrick CHSD Students Named Regeneron Scholars

Three seniors from Wellington C. Mepham High School and two from John F. Kennedy High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District were named Regeneron Science Talent Search Scholars on Jan. 10.

This is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors. They are among 300 students chosen nationwide for this distinction.

The scholars completed three years of independent research in their respective

school’s Advanced Science Research Program.

At Mepham, Christiana Foufas, who is also the Class of 2024 valedictorian, investigated “Adapting to Pressure: The Bone Structure-Function Relationship in the Rabbit Talus,” while salutatorian Matt Yang, studied the “MultiFormer: Single-Cell ATAC to RNA Prediction Framework, “and Molly Graff worked on “Think Fast: An Assessment of Cognitive Processing in Relation to Smartphone Proximity.”

Their teachers are Dr.

David Kommor, Neeru Partap and Jeannettee Spargifiore.

“This honor exemplifies the unwavering commitment to excellence and tireless efforts both they and their teachers display on a daily basis,” noted Heather Bizewski, a science chairperson assigned to Mepham. “Their work has elevated the entire educational community here at Mepham. We are so very proud of our students and their teachers on this remarkable accomplishment. It is a

testament to their passion, resilience and the pursuit of excellence. We applaud their achievements and look forward to witnessing their continued success as they inspire others to reach new heights.”

Kennedy’s Cole Wasserman, also the Class of 2024 salutatorian, investigated “APC-Mediated Expansion of hPSC-Derived Natural Killer Cells,” while Claire Schwartz focused on “The Administration of Sulforaphane via Broccoli Sprouts Ameliorates Parkinson’s Disease

Their teachers are Barbi Frank and Alexis Vandergoot.

“Their research findings are novel and make meaningful contributions to medical research within the scientific community,” added Robert Soel, science chairperson assigned to Kennedy and the district’s STEM chairperson.

“They have consistently demonstrated grit, academic talent, and passion for their independent science research projects. Our ASR

seniors are innovative young scientist who serve as role models for all the students.”

Each Regeneron Scholars is awarded $2,000 for themselves and $2,000 to support science and research at their respective schools.

From that select pool of scholars, 40 student finalists to be selected on Jan. 24 are invited to participate in final judging, display their work to the public, meet with notable scientists and compete for awards, including the top award of $250,000.

American History Essay Contest sponsored by the Amityville Colonel Gilbert Potter Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

The theme of this

year’s contest was “Stars and Stripes Forever.”

Students were tasked with imagining it was the year 1897 and they were a newspaper reporter for the Philadelphia Times.

They were charged with writing an article about the new song performed that day, including details about Sousa’s life and the story behind the song.

WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA DAY - Dozens of PSEG Long Island employees recently participated in the nationwide Wreaths Across America Day at both Calverton National Cemetery and Long Island National Cemetery at Pinelawn. PSEG Long Island also donated 500 wreaths to the Calverton site for the group to use at this event in years to come. Every year on a Saturday before Christmas, PSEG Long Island employees join hundreds of other volunteers laying wreaths on military gravesites. This takes place at more than 2,500 locations across all 50 states and many U.S. territories, including Long Island’s two national cemeteries, and on working military vessels. This annual campaign honors fallen service members by laying wreaths at their gravesites for the holidays.

TERMS OF SALE Such tax liens shall be sold subject to any and all superior tax liens of sovereignties and other municipalities and to all claims of record which the County may have thereon and subject to the provisions of the Federal and State Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts.

However, such tax liens shall have priority over the County’s Differential Interest Lien, representing the excess, if any, of the interest and penalty borne at the maximum rate over the interest and penalty borne at the rate at which the lien is purchased.

North Bellmore Accepting Applications For 2024-25 Pre-K Lottery The North Bellmore School District is accepting applications for its Universal PreKindergarten program for the 2024-2025 school year. While the district recently received expanded grant funds and anticipates having a spot for all applicants, a lottery will still be held to assign placements. The program is contingent upon state funding.

Children who will be 4 years old by Dec. 1, 2024, and will be eligible to enter kindergarten in September 2025, may participate in the

lottery. The program is administered by the North Bellmore School District and is provided by community-based preschools. It is funded by the New York State Education Department through a UPK grant so there is no cost to families.

The district anticipates hosting both half-day and full-day programs.

The half-day program is offered two and a half hours per day, five days a week, and the full-day program is offered five hours per day, five days a week. Both programs will

follow the North Bellmore school calendar. Children are expected to attend every day. Parents cannot choose the school location and transportation is not provided.

Legislator Seth I. Koslow Partners With NuHealth To Host Breast Cancer Screenings Nassau County Legislator Seth I. Koslow (D - Merrick) is partnering with NuHealth and the Breast Imaging Center at Nassau University Medical Center to bring the breast cancer screening van to Temple Beth Am in Merrick from 8 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 14.

Appointments include a breast exam from a nurse, a mammogram, and selfexamination instructions.

bacon strips, minced

onions, diced (about 21⁄2 cups)

garlic cloves, minced (about 2 teaspoons)

medium zucchini, diced (7 to 8 cups)

cups chicken broth

plum tomatoes, peeled, seeded and chopped, (about 1 cup)

cup tomato puree

tablespoons tarragon or cider vinegar

tablespoons minced fresh basil

1⁄2

teaspoon salt, or to taste

1⁄4

teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, or to taste

Directions Cook the bacon in a soup pot over medium heat until the fat is released and the bacon bits are crisp, 6 to 8 minutes.

Add the zucchini, cover the pot and cook until the zucchini starts to become translucent, about 5 minutes.

Add the broth, tomatoes, tomato puree, and vinegar. Bring the soup to a simmer and cook until the vegetables are very tender and the soup has developed a good flavor, 15 to 20 minutes.

Add the basil to the soup, and season with salt and pepper. Serve in heated bowls, garnished with cheddar rusks.

Makes 8 8 slices French or Italian bread (1⁄2-inch thick) 1 cup grated cheddar cheese

Directions Toast the bread until golden brown on both sides.

Preheat the broiler. Scatter the cheese evenly over the toasted bread and broil until the cheese bubbles and begins to brown.
