Jack Carbone, a seventhgrade student at Merrick Avenue Middle School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central School District,

questions on geography, was the first round in the 30th annual National Geographic Bee, a geography competition designed to inspire and reward students’ curiosity about the world.

Carbone, along with other school champions, will take a qualifying test to become eligible to compete in the New York State Bee on April 6th.

The first-place national champion will receive $50,000 college won the school competition a of the National Geographic scholarship.

Geo Bee Winner

Thousands of students packaged up donations for local shelters as part of the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s Day of Service on January 12th.

Inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s call for community service, the annual event had students and staff spring into action, while tying in history.

“During core social studies classes, our student leaders presented a lesson on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., his legacy and dedication to service,” said Wellington C. Mepham Principal Eric Gomez.

Students spent the day filling bags with donated nonperishables, toiletries, baby and hygiene items into reusable tote bags.

“Our students had an opportunity to learn about

what this day of service means and why it is important to find ways to give of our time to others,” said Sanford H. Calhoun Principal Nicole Hollings.

The bags included handwritten notes as well.

Some had inspirational quotes from Dr. King, while others took a different approach. Each school was charged with a different theme of donations. At Grand Avenue Middle School, they collected pet and baby items for their drive, dubbed “Goo, Goo, Bark, Bark.”

“These notes included either parenting or pet care tips collected from faculty and staff,” said Principal Carlo Conte.

The district’s Ambassador Program, a student-led think tank in

support of their One Voice, One Message mission, spearheaded the effort.

In addition to stocking the district-run food pantry, the Community Cupboard, items were also delivered by students and staff to various organizations around Long Island including The INN, Momma’s House, Regina House, the Hempstead Town Animal Shelter and Last Hope Pet Shelter.

“Today in BellmoreMerrick, we all had the opportunity to do right by others and it is one day among many opportunities we have for students to serve in the vision of Dr. King,” said David Seinfeld, principal of John F. Kennedy High School.

Second Place Winner Held at Roslyn High School on January 11th, 36 students were invited to present their research to a panel of peer and expert judges in various categories.

Frank’s research, “A Table Magician’s Greatest Trick: Affecting a Patron’s Tipping Habits Without Them Knowing,” earned him an award in the category of social psychology.

Frank explained that he conducts research at his Friday night gig working as a table magician at a local restaurant.

“I wanted to see what I could do to increase the size of my tips and how many people were actually leaving me tips,” Frank said. “So, I started researching and Bellmore-Merrick Central performed some magic at the came across the concept of School District’s John Long Island Psychology Fair reciprocity.”

LIGHTHOUSE MISSION!

“Providing Hope Beyond The Food” … this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. This non-profit reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor.

Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry, and the story of his journey to become so is so inspiring that it left me speechless.

After meeting with him and touring their quite busy facility, located at 1543 Montauk Highway in Bellport, I was extremely moved by all that I learned about and saw. Lighthouse Mission is a registered nonprofit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help.

Their Food Outreach operates weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www.

LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Pastor Jim Ryan

mentioned to me that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile matter because the Gospel tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him. Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone.

If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so.

They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats.

As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events.

“I got into this because my mom is a speech language pathologist at a school with kids with disabilities and when I visited her at work, I was always fascinated with how they communicate,” Schleider said.

“It’s amazing how much they can learn when taught evidence-based procedures to learn new skills and I wanted to design a study that would teach kids to do this as well,” she continued.

Schleider completed research at Genesis School in East Meadow.

“Through my research of reading journal articles, kids with autism are taught communication skills with adults or other peers that are neurotypical,” she added. “I saw a lack of interaction with kids that also have autism.”

Her study focuses on teaching a participant with autism to request to a peer in their class who also has autism. She focused on a social communication aspect, utilizing speech-generating devices that are programmed with various apps.

Both Frank and Schleider are in Kennedy’s Advanced Science Research program, under advisers Orquidea Afonso and Barbara Franklin, respectively.

Senior Amanda Petrillo from General Douglas MacArthur High School has recently ranked as the number one Girls Bowler in Nassau County with an impressive 202 average.

Petrillo is a three-time All-County bowler and was selected to attend the Teen Masters Tournament this July in Richmond, Virginia. In addition to her athletic accolades,

she is a conscientious student who is a four-year Renaissance card holder and an honor roll member.

Petrillo is a natural leader in the classroom, on team athletics and in the community. She was awarded a bowling scholarship to C.W. Post where she plans to attend next fall.

Celebrating Dr. King Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s contributions to the civil rights movement were the subject of several reading and writing assignments at John Dinkelmeyer Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District.

Kindergartners drew pictures and wrote responses based on Dr. King’s quote, “Love is the key to the problems of the world.” The children were asked to think of ways they could spread love.

After reading “Martin’s Big Words,” first-graders wrote “I

Have a Dream” pieces about the ways in which Dr. King changed the world. They also drew pictures based on words associated with him, such as freedom, kindness and truth.

Teacher Judith Ciccone took Tootsie Roll pops and changed the wrappers so when students opened one, it was a different flavor. This was to teach them that it’s more important to judge someone by what’s on the inside.

In fourth-grade classes, students watched a Brain Pop Jr. video about Dr. King and

analyzed a reading passage using the RAFT method Restate, Answer the question, For example and Tie it up.

They had to determine the main idea of each paragraph.

Teacher Jeanne Patterson said the project connected social studies with literacy, as students took a current topic and used it to improve their reading and writing skills. Sixth-graders wrote acrostic poems from the word “dream.”

Canine Companions Students from the Meadowbrook Alternative Program and Sanford H. Calhoun High School’s PREP special education program in the Bellmore-Merrick Central School District recently collaborated on a donation effort for Canine Companions for Independence.

CCI provides people with disabilities highly trained assistance dogs.

“The visit included an informational talk by the CCI staff, a tour of the training

facility and a presentation on how a service dog assists individuals,” said MAP psychologist Dr. Joseph Netto.

“The purpose of this visit to CCI was to expose students to service dogs and to visit an organization that was designated as a beneficiary of MAP’s donated pet goods.”

Since their November visit to the Medford-based training facility, the students collected items for their new furry friends. On January 12th, Canine Companions’

staff members and two service dogs visited MAP to collect the items. The effort was in participation of the district wide Day of Service, which was inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “After listening to and taking part in the interactive presentation, the students presented the CCI staff with over 25 bags of dog food, toys, supplies and animal care products,” Dr. Netto explained.

Seen at the local supermarket last week: a gentleman piling each one of his items into his cart, refusing to pay the 5¢ plastic bag fee that was recently passed in Suffolk County.

“Nope,” he shook his head vigorously. “I’ll throw it all in my backseat and carry every single item into my house by hand if I have to.”

The checkout clerk, somewhat perplexed, acquiesced. “Alright,” she replied politely. “Whatever you’d prefer - that’s why we ask if you’d like a bag.”

As he rolled his overflowing shopping cart away, fellow clerks exchanged raised eyebrows and shrugged.

“It’s one thing when they have a handful of items, but $300 worth of food and perishables?” She seemed incredulous. “That’s really standing on principle.”

The clerk went on to list the bizarre scenarios she had witnessed over these last several weeks - from people juggling glass bottles (an attempt which, needless to say, didn’t end so well) to the woman who insisted on cradling about 5 pounds of meat in her arms. All to save a nickel.

I have to admit, I was only vaguely aware that this proposed law was set to take effect until I found myself running into the store for some last minute New Year’s Eve snacks. Only then did I see the signs warning of the impending surcharge posted at each register, plastered on every entrance and exit, along with racks of “reusable” plastic bags for sale at each counter. I did some quick math: so, if I buy an allegedly sturdier bag for 10¢ - assuming I get more than two uses out of it, I’ll be

ahead of the game.

I considered further the fact that, nearly every time I am in any sort of store but especially those of the supermarket variety - I am repeatedly amazed at the lack of, shall we say, bagging skills employed by most clerks.

I invariably wind up with either 27 bags with one or two items in each, or the equally daunting 20 pound bag filled to the brim and unlikely to make it to the car without breaking, let alone up a flight of stairs into my apartment.

I’ll bag my own, thanks, I always request. And now, if I’m going to pay for them, you can be sure I’ll be taking matters into my own hands.

Preferably without an armful of glass bottles and pork chops to contend with as well. Just when food shopping was beginning to become routine…

Second-grade students at Summit Lane Elementary School in Christine Pase’s and Michelle Matos’ class recently celebrated the start of the school’s new P.R.I.D.E. program by participating in stations that focused on the P.R.I.D.E. letters which represent Patience, Respect, Integrity, Determination and Excellence.

The school-wide P.R.I.D.E. program is a positive behavior incentive plan that gives each student an opportunity to earn P.R.I.D.E. prize coupons anytime during Students and staff at Summit Lane Elementary School recently donned matching orange t-shirts to officially kicked off their Unity and P.R.I.D.E. program. The program, which stands for Patience, Respect, Integrity, Determination and Excellence, allows students to focus on these positive attributes throughout the school year in a fun and engaging way.

Members of the district’s central administration were present for the celebration where Principal Keith Squillacioti welcomed everyone and discussed what the Unity and P.R.I.D.E. Program is.

“At Summit Lane our Unity Program is a continuation of the P.R.I.D.E. Program we’ve had here and our ‘Get a Voice Program’,” he said.

“With this Unity Program, we’re making Summit Lane orange.”

Following the welcome, a video about the program was shown by teacher Jennifer O’Brien. The video featured student liaisons and student

council members who showcased the meaning of the program in a news station format.

They conducted interviews with staff members about how students can represent P.R.I.D.E. each and every day.

To show the school’s appreciation for the support of the district’s central administration, student council representatives presented Assistant Superintendent of Business and Finance William Pastore, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Debbie Rifkin, Assistant Superintendent of Instruction Todd Winch and Assistant Superintendent of Pupil Services Dr. Donald Sturz with orange unity t-shirts as a thank you.

In addition, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald received a special shadowbox with the orange t-shirt inside. Enclosed was a P.R.I.D.E. coupon, photos of students and the words “Summit Lane has P.R.I.D.E. and We Are Proud.”

Inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s actions and teachings, Winthrop Avenue School fourthgraders utilized their individual interpretations of leadership to create a piece of art.

After reading David A. Adler’s “A Picture Book of Martin Luther King, Jr.,” the students collectively

identified terms to describe MLK Jr. as a leader. During a collaborative art project, each student then colored a section of a copied portrait of the civil rights leader, writing in words expressing leadership into their individual sections.

The result was a colorful mosaic holding expressions and words that defined the

teachings of King as they tie in with the Bellmore School District’s character education leadership principles.

“One piece of the mosaic does not reveal the significance of the project,” teacher Carolyn Buckley stated. “All of the work together makes this a masterpiece.”

Full STEAM Ahead

Through a partnership with the Levittown Public Library, third- and fourthgraders at Gardiners Avenue School recently visited the library with their classes to participate in the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics activities that the library has to offer. The library-school partnership was established just last year as a way to bring the two together and expand on hands-on learning.

The students participated in a variety of different STEAM activities throughout the library and its Innovation Station, with the help of the library’s

media team. Students had the opportunity to use 3Doodlers, a 3-D printing pen which they used on different design sheets and control their own Sphero balls, a transparent robot ball whose movement and color change with the touch of an iPad. The students also explored the world of electric building with littleBits. Thirdgraders created their own working soccer scoreboard and shot their own goals with a paper ball.

The experience was a positive one for many of the students who tried out the new technology tools at the library for the first

time.

“I learned that it’s really exciting and that you get to do a lot of stuff,” said third-grader Giosue Coniglio.

“I really liked doing the 3-D pens,” added thirdgrader Spencer SanoffWiener.

As a thank you for coming to the library, each class received a 3-D object created from the library’s 3-D printer.

“We love the partnership with the school, it’s so important,” said Marie Andreski, Levittown Public Library’s department head of the media/innovation station. “We want the students to have the exposure to the library and the Innovation Station.

MakerSpaces are a thing of the future.”

Fifth-graders at Gardiners Avenue School will visit the Levittown Public Library at the end of February and beginning of March to try out the STEAM activities for themselves with their classmates.

How about something new and blue for the two of you!

ouples planning their weddings routinely rely on professional transportation to bring them to and from the ceremony and reception.

According to The Knot Real Weddings Study 2016, roughly half of all engaged couples will hire a transportation service such as a limousine or party bus for their weddings.

Shuttles and buses: Investing in the guest experience means couples are seeking ways to provide comfort and convenience for their guests and wedding party members. Rather than asking guests to get themselves to and fro, couples may employ buses or shuttles stocked with amenities to transport a greater number of people. The Real Weddings Study indicates this type of transport has grown considerably more popular in the last six years.

Exotic limousines: The chauffeur-driven limousine continues to be one of the most popular methods of transportation.

However, to set their weddings apart, couples are trending away from traditional stretch limousines and renting something more trendy, such as limos built upon sports cars. SUV-based limos are still popular, with Hummers, Escalades and Navigators offering the wow factor.

Vintage cars: For that A-list look right out of a classic movie, stepping out of a vintage vehicle creates red-carpet moments. Dream cars for this type of glamorous arrival and departure include

Rolls Royce, Bentley, Aston Martin and others. Many private companies rent classic vehicles. Couples also may contract with those who attend classic car shows.

Water transport: Couples celebrating by the ocean, a lake or a river can make a grand entrance aboard a vessel. Water taxis, pontoon boats and even sleek speedboats may be the transportation of choice.

The Knot says that couples spend around 6.5 months researching their wedding day transportation options and will make their decision and a reservation five months before their weddings. Career Day Held Students in grades 10-12 at W.T. Clarke High School in the East Meadow School District recently explored a vast range of careers during the school’s first Career Day. The event, coordinated in part by Beth Bucheister, executive director of Career Day Inc., provided students with a venue to meet and learn from 58 professionals representing a variety of fields, including carpentry, real estate, medicine, fashion, marketing, computer science and engineering. Among the professionals were Clarke High School alumni, who explained how their high school experiences had impacted their future.

“Career Day connects students with business leaders to give them an inside look at major industries and to better

understand what it takes to get to where these professionals are,” said Clarke business teacher Joe Pavia. “It’s an excellent opportunity for students to explore different career pathways.”

Kicking off the day, students attended the “Empowering 21st Century Students: Where Am I Going?” assembly led

by Randy Shain, founder of One on One Mentors; Michelle Kyriakides, executive director of the Hofstra University Career Center; and Bucheister, who inspired students to identify their “VIPS” – values, interests, personality and skills – when determining which career path to take.

Following the assembly, students attended two breakout sessions with presenters based on

their career interests.

During these sessions, industry leaders discussed their everyday tasks and experiences, shared their educational backgrounds and answered students’ questions.

“What I would like students to gain from this experience is an understanding of how much opportunity there is to find and work toward a career that is meaningful to them,” said Bucheister.

W.T. Clarke High School would like to thank the board of education, central administration, the school’s Career Day Committee, the PTSA, the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce and the participating local businesses for making its first Career Day a huge success.

Taco Truck a Success A Wantagh High School college-level Virtual Enterprises team has realized success on the regional level with its Guaco Taco food truck business during the Long Island Trade Show, held at SUNY Farmingdale on January 9th.

Upon presentation of their business plan to a panel of judges and the selling of a virtual product, the student-employees won a silver medal each for the company’s website and the company newsletter.

Through sales of their

virtual catering packages, the student-employees also made 50,000 VE dollars.

Under the direction of facilitator-teacher Nancy O’Connor, high school students enrolled in the VE program have a role in the organization and structure of a virtual company in which the students assume business responsibilities.

As employees of a virtual business, students are held accountable for the company’s performance.

They conduct market research, develop a business plan, develop and

design an e-commerce website, pay wages and taxes, maintain 410(K) plans and develop an annual report. In addition, VE students have the opportunity to interact with 5,000 other VE firms locally, nationally and globally.

During the Long Island Trade Show, competition was fierce and Wantagh students had to be business savvy as more than 90 VE firms from Long Island school districts were represented.
