Parents who have a child/children residing in the Levittown School District and have attained the age of four years on or before Dec. 1, 2020 are invited to apply for admission, on behalf of their child, to the Universal Pre-Kindergarten Program during the 2020-2021 school year.

The program is a half day program which will be housed at one of our UPK providers beginning in Sept. 2020 for 180 days through June 2021, roughly coinciding with the Levittown School District calendar.

The program has limited space and participants will be chosen during a random lottery selection process. A waiting list will be established to fill any vacancies that may arise.

All students must be potty trained and be fully immunized by the start of school in Sept. 2020.

You will receive a confirmation email that it was received and then a notification of when the drawing is being held. You do not need to be present during the drawing. Those selected in the random lottery process will be notified by email and receive a district registration packet, in the mail, in order for placement to be finalized. If you receive an email that you are on the waiting list after the drawing and receive a number, that is your number on the waitlist. If a spot

becomes available, you will be notified. There is nothing further for you to do at that time.

Two talented young writers from Jonas E. Salk Middle School in the Levittown Public Schools were recently selected to have their short stories published by Young Writers for its Survival Stories: Mission Contamination Mini Saga Contest. Sixth grader Mya Melendez and seventh grader Dana Scimecca had their 100word stories selected out of approximately 10,000

applicants. All creative writing submissions had to fit the contamination theme.

Melendez was inspired to write her mini saga, “The Savior,” after author Gordon Korman visited Jonas E. Salk Middle School to speak with students about his own ways to find story inspiration.

She told her teacher Renee Essex about her story who then encouraged Melendez to submit it to the contest. Scimecca was also

determined to showcase her creative writing after hearing about the contest from her teacher Emilia Dakis. She was selected for her piece, “The End of Humanity.”

Both students received a certificate and a copy of their printed mini sagas. The Levittown Public Schools congratulates Melendez and Scimecca for their outstanding achievement.

Long Island Community Hospital has recently been designated a Lung Cancer Screening Center by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

The ACR Lung Cancer Screening Center designation recognizes facilities that have committed to practice safe, effective diagnostic care for individuals at the highest risk for lung cancer. To receive this elite distinction, facilities must be accredited by the ACR in computed tomography in the chest module, as well as undergo a rigorous assessment of their lung cancer screening protocol and infrastructure. The program must also have procedures in place for follow-up patient care, such as counseling and smoking cessation programs.

“Lung cancer is the nation’s leading cancer killer, taking the lives of more people each year than breast, colon and prostate cancers combined.” states Long Island Community Hospital President and CEO Richard T. Margulis.

On Dec. 19, the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District hosted its first Business Challenge, a business competition in which teams planned, presented and defended a position in one of five business categories.

The categories are Finance, Marketing, Hospitality and Tourism, Entrepreneurship and Sports and Entertainment Marketing. There were 20 teams comprised of three students from John F. Kennedy, Wellington C. Mepham and Sanford H. Calhoun high Schools, participating in the competition.

“We featured a college expo during the day at the competition,” explained Calhoun High School Vice Principal and co-organizer

Mark Melkonian.

Participating colleges and universities include LIU Post, Hofstra University, Molloy College, Adelphi University and Farmingdale State University.

“We had many distinguished professionals serving as judges from both the academic and non-academic world,” added Melkonian.

Bridges Build Engineering Know-How

Although their bridges didn’t have to span a river, sixth graders at John G. Dinkelmeyer Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District did have to bridge the distance between two desks in a STEAM activity that gave

them insight into the engineering process.

Each group had 200 wooden sticks to build a bridge at least 14 inches long and three and a half inches tall. Before the construction began, students researched different types of bridges

of Health Immunization Program, in accordance with ACIP guidelines, revised its immunization requirements for school entry: • 4-5 doses of diphtheria, tetanus, acellular pertussis.* • 3-4 doses of polio.** • 2 doses of MMR (measles, mumps, rubella).

• 3 doses of hepatitis B. • 2 doses of varicella vaccine or documentation of proof of disease.

All immunization documents are required at kindergarten registration.

School nurses will review all documents and will inform parents if a child requires any additional vaccines in order to begin school in September. In the event these requirements are not met by the first day of school, according to New York State law, parents are permitted a 14-day grace period as stipulated under PHL Section 2165 (measles, mumps and rubella requirements). If these requirements are still not met after the grace period, children in question

will be excluded from school until the requirements are met. Parents are advised to direct any questions to their respective school’s nurse or their child’s pediatrician.

In order to substantiate residency, a deed or a lease, a driver’s license, and three utility bills (e.g. telephone, PSEG Long Island, National Grid, heating oil and cable/internet bills) must be presented at the appointment.

Parents will receive a packet of paperwork in the mail prior to registration week. When coming to the school for the scheduled meeting, parents must bring the completed packet. It is not necessary to bring the child to the registration appointment.

Calhoun’s Environmental Club Hosts Thrift Shop

The newly created Environmental Club at Sanford H. High School used their early meetings as brainstorming sessions where students laid out many goals for this year, including a thrift shop set up on Dec. 19-20, where students could donate old Calhoun gear to be sold and therefore repurposed.

They collectively decided that a thrift shop would be the greatest way they could meet their goal and the thrift shop was born.

“It involves our entire community, we are recycling and reusing clothing, and as vintage/thrift stores are gaining popularity among youths and current fashion trends,

we decided to go all in and reach out,” Maksimowicz added.

Students put up flyers printed on previously used paper saved from recycle bins around school, and they utilized all digital platforms to further reach the Bellmore-Merrick community.

Additionally, instead of printing their own shirts, they printed their own patches which students ironed onto all donated clothing and will be put on sale this week.

In a joint effort, the school’s vocational program was able to wash all of the donations, further incorporating the sense of community and togetherness of Calhoun.

The ballet dance classes at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) welcomed American Ballet Theatre dance educator Stephen Campanella, who taught a lively “character dance” to the students.

The Master Class program is part of the school’s ongoing mission to provide its students with an inside look at the industries they are pursuing, and to introduce them to mentors within their chosen field.

“The students were at-

tentive and enthusiastic,” Campanella said after teaching the second class of the day. “They really paid attention to the material, and they did a good job coming out of their comfort zones.”

Character dance, explained Campanella, is derived from folk dancing, the dance “of a people.” “Like the tarantella is the folk dance of Italy, for example,” he said. “Many ballets include this type of dance Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, to name a couple.”

This year, LIHSA has a partnership with the American Ballet Theatre.

The partnership grew out of a grant awarded to LIHSA by the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation.

“I wanted to bring really high-quality artistic experiences and partnerships to the students at LIHSA,” said Principal Dr. Chris Rogutsky Bleecker. “To have evolved into a partnership with an internationally acclaimed dance organization is an amazing opportunity for our students.”

On Long Island, Catholic Elementary Schools celebrate the week with Masses and open houses to thank parents and parishioners, and to introduce new

These frequently kick off with a Mass and open house on the Sunday the 26th, but can be held early as St Patrick School in Huntington is doing on Thursday the 23rd. In addition to the Open House to welcome new visitors, Catholic Schools Week features a series of events designed to recognize the contributions of students, parents and faculty during the course of the week.

Many schools also offer additional open houses and opportunities for prospective new families to visit during the week as well.

Eighty-two seventh and eighth grade students from Jonas E. Salk Middle School in the Levittown Public Schools recently raised $400 for the nonprofit organization, Kids In Danger, during the school’s annual Tyler’s Teddies fundraiser.

The fundraiser was created after a 10-month-

old named Tyler was fatally entrapped in the side of a drop-side crib. The crib continued to be advertised in stores as the number one product for safety. KID is dedicated to improving child safety products and the organization shares Tyler’s story, among others, in an effort to raise awareness and support laws

that keep kids safe.

Led by English teacher Michele Witte, the student volunteers sold teddy bears for $3 during their lunch periods to students and staff. Those who purchased a bear were encouraged to either keep it and promise to share kindness or give it to a family member or friend and ask them to do

a random act of kindness in return during the holiday season.

“I decided to get into the Tyler’s Teddies movement because all the money was going towards such a great cause to protect kids from dangerous things and I just thought that was great,” said seventh grader Brooke Todhunter.

Students at Jonas E. Salk Middle School wore pajamas on Dec. 20 to show the world that they joined the Tyler’s Teddies movement, raised awareness and spread kindness. The students also participated in the school’s Holiday Jamboree that day where they were stationed at a table and encouraged their peers to make a Tyler’s

“I hope that the students did the act of kindness that we asked, and I hope that they learned something from it,” said seventh grader Shea Slavens. “We want them to not just do an act of kindness when they buy a teddy but to do it whenever.”

Kennedy Boasts Three Regeneron Scholars Three students from John F. Kennedy High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District were named Regeneron Science Talent Search Scholars on Jan. 8.

Recognition as a Regeneron STS Scholars places Andrew Brinton, Kenar Gelman and Katherine St George among the top 300

brightest young scientists in the nation.

“This exceptional accomplishment has been earned in recognition of their scientific talent and development of outstanding independent scientific research projects,” explained Robert Soel, district science chairperson and STEM Education. “They have invested hundreds of

hours over three years planning, conducting and analyzing their own scientific investigations while being mentored by cooperating scientists in fields of their own choosing.”

Brinton’s project is “Marsh Restoration: Ribbed Mussels (Geukensia demissa) as a Revival Mechanism to Rebuild the Coastal Salt

Marshes of Long Island, New York;” Gelman’s project is “Chondrocyte Adenosine A2A receptor signaling leads to cellular homeostasis through activation of Protein Kinase A (PKA)” and St George’s is “The Ketogenic Diet Ameliorates The Effects of Caffeine in Seizure Susceptible Drosophila melanogaster.”

They are all seniors in Barbi Frank’s Advanced Science Research class, a three-year program, at Kennedy High School. Research teachers Barbara Franklin and Orquidea Afonso, as well as Soel, also assisted students with support throughout the program.

The Regeneron STS is the nation’s most prestigious

pre-college science competition. Each scholar, selected from 1,900 entrants, receives a $2,000 award with an additional $2,000 going to his or her respective school. The 40 finalists chosen to compete in Washington, D.C. in March will be announced in late January.

The Charity of the Month for January is: YMCA Long Island www.ymcali.org

The YMCA of Long Island is a leading non-profit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility.

Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit.

The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville.

This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need.

These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors, Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more.

The Y believes that when people come together for a common cause, the entire community is strengthened.

When someone becomes

a volunteer, they have the opportunity to share their blessings with those who need it most. You can take an active role in strengthening your community by volunteering at the Y! Volunteers can serve on their Board of Directors/Board of Managers/ committees, raise funds to ensure their organization is accessible to all members of the community, motivate and support youth, extend a hand to help adults who want to do more, be more or live healthier, advocate for their efforts and participate in opportunities to give back and support neighbors.

Nikolis, who has been teaching Greek at the Greek Othodox Church Panaghia in Island Park for over 25 years, was inspired by her granddaughter to write the books. “Each story teaches children to help people and to work hard in school,” says Nikolis, a native of Chios, Greece. “The books also help children to learn both the Greek and English languages.”
