During this pandemic, Angels of Long Island is short staffed and looking for help. Their store is cleaned every morning and masks are required there. Please only consider volunteering if you are not showing any covid symptoms. Everyone’s safety is their first priority.

Lastly, every Saturday until further notice, Angels of Long Island will team up with Carroll’s Kitchen, another Long Island based non-profit. Together they will be handing out gourmet to-go meals for free to anyone who stops by the Angels’ Patchogue store when the meals are available (please visit the Angels of Long Island Facebook page for meal arrival updates). Anyone is welcome to come and let a team member know how many dinners you need. The meals are distributed via curbside pickup. “So many people are out of work,” says Debbie. “If we can help their budget a ltitle by providing a meal for their family, it thrills me!”

Angels of Long Island is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization ran by Debbie and Brittany, a mother and daughter duo.

They turned a small Facebook group into a fast growing non-profit organization that helps countless Long Islanders in need.

Their non-profit continued to grow so much so that Debbie and Brittany decided to open up a storefront location in Patchogue called Angels of Long Island.

Their slogan Neighbors helping neighbors is a great reflection of what this thriving thrift store/boutique/donation center does. “We work so hard to keep our store clean and beautiful so that all of our customers who walk through our doors feels a sense of dignity and respect shopping at our store,” says Debbie. “We are not like your average thrift store! We carry designer brands and offer a unique experience.”

The mission of this non-profit is to assist and advocate for people in our Long Island community who are in need of assistance. Their goal is to empower people to overcome poverty and live prosperous lives. They truly provide a wide range of services and goods to people in crisis, however anyone can come shop at their Patchogue store, which has recently expanded, located at 350-23 East Main Street.

The store is proud to take many types of donations. They now accept bottle and can donations every Monday-Saturday from 9AM-3PM, where you can simply pull up curbside, pop your trunk and a team member will take the donations for you.

All bottles and cans must be marked New York state deposit and no broken glass bottles are able to be accepted. Please remember to separate glass items from plastic items before you donate them.

Pickups at your residence are available for large quantities of recyclables.

Additionally, they accept other donations, such as new or gently used clothing, housewares, home decor and

Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin Urges Eligible Local Restaurants to Apply for Available Grant Funding Supervisor Don Clavin and the Hempstead Town Board are notifying restaurants operating within the Town of Hempstead of available grant funding through a New York State supported program for certain eateries negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The grants – made possible through the state-supported Raising the NYS Bar Restaurant Recovery Fund – allow for small businesses who meet the below listed criteria access to upwards of $5,000 in funding that can be used in support of social distancing compliant improvements, outdoor dining accommodations,

expansion of take-out/ delivery operations, etc.

Eligible Restaurant Criteria – NYS Bar Restaurant Recovery Fund: Be full-service restaurants (NAICS code 722511), or establishments engaged in providing food services and meals prepared on-premises to patrons who traditionally order and are served while seated (i.e., waiter/ waitress service), including on-premises food and drinking establishments licensed through the State Liquor Authority (SLA).

Establishments providing take out or grab-andgo food services due to COVID-19 restrictions are also eligible;

Franchises are not eligible; Have no more than $3 million in 2019 revenue; Be located in New York State; Have been in operation on or before March 1, 2019; Certify and demonstrate that they have experienced financial hardship due to COVID-19 Agree to comply with all applicable New York State and local reopening guidance and COVID-19 health and safety policies, including the New York Forward reopening guidance and Cluster Action Initiative guidance, as well as SLA and DOH regulations.

Bellmore-Merrick CHSD Assists At Lions Club’s Drive-Thru Polar Express Holiday Party The Lions Club District 20K2 of Nassau-Bermuda held its annual children’s Holiday party on Dec. 5 at the Brookside School with a change from year’s past.

With a focus on keeping attendees safe, this year’s Polar Express Holiday party was transformed into Santa’s Winter Workshop Walk Through.

Families were guided through an outdoor area where volunteers at the tables helped them gather prepackaged grab-and-go gifts of toys, warm coats, books and other surprises.

“The event is free and offered by invitation-only, as the Lions worked with Nassau County social services, elementary schools, charities and houses of worship to invite local families that are in need this holiday season,” explained Nina Lanci, a long-time Lion, past district governor and board of education trustee.

In the past, this event has helped as many as 700 families in need and was the highlight of the year for the Lions of NassauBermuda District 20K2, especially the Lions Club

of Bellmore which has been the backbone of the event for the past several years under the guidance of Lanci, the event’s chairperson.

“Although this event may look a bit different this year due to the health and safety regulations in regard to the pandemic, the joy and the excitement remains the same for both the children and the volunteers who help,” added Lanci. “There is nothing as touching as seeing a child’s eyes light up and watch them smile at the sight of the beautiful toys and gifts

they receive at this event.

For many families that are struggling, especially this year, this event really brings the meaning of the holiday straight to the heart.”

Community partners included schools in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School and North Bellmore Union Free School District, the Mepham Leo Club, the C.H.A.M.P. program at Kennedy High School, the Bellmore-Merrick Community Cupboard and the North Bellmore United Teachers organization.

An Elevated Risk

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some medical conditions can put people at an elevated risk for certain infections. people understand the role vaccines can play in promoting their overall health. It’s also vital that men and women realize the connection between their lifestyle choices and their risk for certain infections. For example, excessive consumption of alcohol and smoking are two controllable risk factors that can elevate a person’s risk for infection. Is It Safe To Donate Blood During The Pandemic?

Donating blood is a selfless act that saves lives. Blood donors may recognize the vital role they play in patient care, but many may wonder if it’s safe to donate blood during

the pandemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is safe for anyone who is well to donate blood. That even goes for people who are social distancing due

to COVID-19. The CDC has recommended various safety measures to ensure the safety of donors and donation center volunteers and staff members. Such measures include spacing

donor chairs at least six feet apart and encouraging donors to make donation appointments ahead of time.

Appointments can ensure donors are not spending more time at the donation

center than is absolutely necessary, reducing the likelihood that they have contact with someone who may have COVID-19 but not know it. The Red Cross notes it has instituted

additional safety protocols, such as laundering blankets used by donors after each use and requiring all donors and staff to wear face coverings or masks during the donation process.
