What is Catholic Schools Week?

Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of catholic education in the United States. It starts the last Sunday in January, which is January 31st in 2016, and runs through February 6th. The theme for Catholic Schools Week 2016 is Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.

Five “live” online chats. No fewer than four individual “incident” numbers to reference. And still, nearly six weeks later, no resolution.

Allow me to back up and fill in the blanks. A few days after Black Friday, I decided to use a credit obtained through a retailer-whoshall-not-be-named, coupled with several other coupons and promotions, to purchase a pair of sneakers (and socks) online.

No problem. Order processed, confirmed, waiting for shipment.

Over a week later, an e-mail stating that a portion of my order (aforementioned sneakers) had been cancelled, as they were suddenly “out of stock.” The socks, however, arrived all by their lonesome several days later.

Annoying? Sure. But, more to the point, what became of my credit which, thanks to the delay in processing, was now expired, having not been applied to my

now-cancelled purchase? One would assume I would be entitled to some sort of refund/coupon/ gift card in order to make future use of this sum, now $2.99 less thanks to the socks. One would also think that a store’s customer service representatives would be well versed in how to handle such a scenario, seeing as I couldn’t have been the first person to ever encounter such a cancelled order/ credit issue.

And yet, here we are, approaching the close of January, and still no sign of that “customer is always right” mantra. No, all I’ve gotten is the runaround, everything from “your gift card is in the mail” to “we can only apply the credit to a future online order, but the time frame has already expired” to “we’ll make an exception and e-mail you a new coupon code to use in-store or online” … none of which has occurred.

The best part – and I do mean that in the most facetious way possible – is that each attempt to

contact customer service has been met with an equally incompetent representative who, despite my relaying of the entire situation and the latest “incident” number provided, have no clue what I’m talking about, why I was given such an array of inaccurate information, or, quite frankly, what to do to rectify the issue. And this is their profession. Inspires all sorts of confidence, doesn’t it?

As I write this, a confirmation e-mail has arrived in my inbox, detailing my “inquiry” (which one?) and providing not one, but two, completely different incident numbers, one in the subject line, the other in the body of the rather nondescript form letter. There is also a customer service number to contact which, upon dialing, takes you on a whirlwind tour of automated extensions before settling into hold music for a solid 15 minutes, followed by dead silence as the call disconnects.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why I refuse to shop online.

Ever. Again.

HOBY Ambassador In the East Meadow School District, East Meadow High School sophomore Kristen Kavanagh has been selected as a Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) ambassador.

HOBY, founded in 1958, is an organization that inspires and develops global community youth and volunteers to live a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation.

As an ambassador, Kristen will participate with other teenagers at the HOBY Leadership Conference where she will collaborate with recognized leaders in business, government, education and other professions to discuss

current worldly issues.

Kristen was selected through a rigorous process that included an interview by faculty, administration and a former HOBY ambassador.

She unanimously impressed the panel with her poise, confidence, insight and genuine concern for others.

Kristen is a very conscientious student who is involved in various extracurricular activities.

She is a member of the school’s Kickline team, a Jet Gazette News Editor and an active member of National English Honor Society and Students Against Destructive Decisions organization.

During her time as

a Girl Scout, Kristen earned Bronze and Silver Awards and is currently working toward her Gold Award, called Irreplaceable Interaction. To obtain this award, she must teach an interaction skill to young people. Seeing a dwindling in people’s social skills, Kristen created an acronym, “SMILE” for people to easily remember the key aspects of interaction with others.

“SMILE” stands for Smile, Manners, Interpersonal Skills, Listen and Eye Contact.

In addition, Kristen aspires to earn a doctorate in education and become an elementary school teacher.

The Bellmore School District believes that reading is an essential part of a student’s educational experience. Throughout the month of January, Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center students will be honing into these important reading skills during the PTA’s monthlong Pick a Reading Partner (PARP) event themed “Rocking Out to Reading.”

This month’s goal is for students to collectively read 50,000 minutes. The PTA will keep tabs on the

number of minutes as students read and fill out musical items, which are tallied prominently on a bulletin board in the hall.

Throughout the month, mystery readers will also share their favorite books with students, and the PARP Patrol will be looking for students who are actively reading.

“The only way to become a good reader is to practice,” Principal Patricia Castine told students during an assembly.

To kick off the event, students attended

an assembly with percussionists Chet Doboe and John Doboe of the popular Hip Pickles. Not only did the students listen to rockin’ music, select students participated in the Hip Pickles All-Star Drummers and the Pickle Mania Dance Sensations to celebrate their love of reading.

Secondgrader Jordy Kahn and kindergartner Matthew Phillip also shared their favorite books on stage.

Matthew said, “I like to read because books give you ideas.”

Rocking Out to Reading

John F. Kennedy High School students from Ms. Albaneze’s Drawing and Painting class recently had the unique opportunity to draw from a live model under the direction of Ms. Albaneze and Professor Dan Christoffel at LIU Post.

These students are currently enrolled in the LIU High School Scholars Program, which provides high school students with the opportunity to

get a head start on their college education by taking university-level courses for college credit.

Dan Christoffel, who taught art in the BellmoreMerrick Central School District from 1960-2001, is an accomplished portrait artist whose work has been featured in multiple exhibitions across the country. Additionally, he has served as a visiting art lecturer at the

Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

The professional critique, guidance and instruction provided by Mr. Christoffel was invaluable as these students grow as young artists. Ms. Albaneze’s Drawing & Painting students will have the opportunity to attend a second class during the spring semester.

Native Territory Bellmore students at Winthrop Avenue School attended an in-house field trip to American Indian territory to learn more about the Eastern Woodland Native Americans during a presentation by Marianne Chasen and Maddi Cheers titled “Journeys

Into American Indian Territory.” During the curriculum-based event, students discussed the geographical location of the Algonquian and Iroquoian peoples, their methods of survival and their form of government.

During the program, students participated in

a simulated deer hunt, explored the interior of a longhouse and participated in traditional American Indian games, such as the ring and pin and an Iroquois dice game named Atenaha. A culminating activity included the making of clay pots.

Northside Elementary School students in Levittown learned about the Iroquoian-speaking Native Americans during a presentation called “Journeys Into American Indian Territory.” The in-house field trip complemented the information studied in the fourth-grade social studies curriculum about native

peoples.

Presenter Jamie Reason discussed the geographical location of the Iroquois, their methods of survival and how many of the tools used by American Indians have helped to advance technology today.

Furthermore, the Office of the Town Clerk is waiving fees for residents who lost important documents during Hurricane Sandy, including birth certificates, death certificates, marriage licenses and passports.

“Hempstead Town continues to lead the way in helping neighbors rebuild after the devastating effects of Superstorm Sandy. The town board and I are committed to helping neighbors recover, rebuild and return home,” Santino said. “By extending hours for structural work, we are helping neighbors in the midst of rebuilding put their homes and lives back together faster.”

Donating Warmth In the Merrick School District, Birch Elementary School Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) club held a coat drive to support Assemblyman David McDonough’s “Coat for

Kids” campaign.

SADD members encouraged students to donate gently used or new coats for all ages and sizes.

Astonished by the amount of donations, Assemblyman McDonough presented the

school and students with a certificate thanking them for their contribution to the campaign.

All donations will help children and adults in need to stay warm this winter.

Native Life Fourth-graders at Wantagh’s Forest Lake Elementary School now know how to make wampum and cornhusk dolls and have tasted johnnycakes after participating in their school’s Native American Day. Teacher Michelle Anszelowicz explained that the students had learned

about Native American life and the Iroquois of New York State in their social studies classes and discussed how the Pilgrims relied on the Native Americans’ knowledge to help them through the first harsh winter.

“We are trying to give the students and authentic experience of Native American life through

these hands on activities,” Anszelowicz said.

Dressed as Native Americans, students delved into a number of rotational activities, which included Iroquois games, the making of turtle rattles and talking sticks, writing stories and symbols on fabric that resembled leather and molding clay pots.

Psychology Fair Five students from the Bellmore-Merrick Central School District presented their scientific research at the annual Long Island Psychology Fair on January 7th at Roslyn High School.

John F. Kennedy’s Rachel Mashal, Claire Kelly and Alexis Tillman and Sanford H. Calhoun’s Noelle Perrone and Paulina Fein were among more than 70 Long Island applicants.

Only 30 were chosen to present.

Rachel Mashal placed first in Biopsychology and Claire Kelly received honorable mention in

Cognitive Psychology.

Paulina Fein participated in the Psychology Bowl and made it to the second round. All five students are in their respective schools’ Advanced Science Research (ASR) Programs.

“We are very proud of the psychology projects that were completed,” said Kennedy Advanced Science Research teacher Barbi Frank.

“Their presentations at the Long Island Psychology Fair were extremely impressive and were the result of hundreds of hours of research. This is the first

time Kennedy students have achieved top honors and honorable mention at this highly selective event.”

Each student put together a 10-minute presentation, followed by a question and answer session.

“This is our second year entering the competition and we are very grateful to have students chosen once again to present,” said Jennifer Pefanis, the director of Calhoun’s Advanced Science Research Program.

Oklahoma Under the direction of musical director Carol Spainer and producer Melisa Baker, Wisdom Lane’s cast and crew drew a packed audience for the school’s production of Oscar Hammerstein II’s and Richard Roger’s “Oklahoma!” on January 8th-9th in Levittown.

The popular Broadway play told the story of cowboy Curly McClain and his romance with farm girl

Laurie Williams, played by Thomas Staab and Leah Draluck, respectively.

In addition, the play highlighted a second romance that flourished between cowboy Will Parker and flirtatious fiancée Ado Annie, played

by Patrick Messmer and Jacqueline Testamark.

Members of the cast added to the upbeat tone of the play with musical selections including

“People Will Say We’re in Love,” “Oh What a Beautiful Morning,” “The Surrey with the Fringe on Top” and “Oklahoma.”

The success of the play was also a result of the efforts of stage crew director and set/prop designer Barry Spainer, choreographer Joanna Capitelli, sound and light designer Glen Davis and costume manager Chakira Doherty.
