It promotes self-determination, inclusion and dignity for persons with intellectual

and developmental disabilities. Provides families with assurance that their loved one will always have a circle of committed supporters to help them make good and healthy decisions.

BMCHSD Transition Coordinator Cheryl Gitlitz, LCSW said, “This presentation will explain the steps families  need to take in order to properly protect and provide for their children in the future.”

The Right Wine

When pairing wine and food, think of wine as a condiment-it should

complement a dish. The general rule is to try to achieve a balance-wine should not overpower the food, nor should the food overpower the wine.

Wantagh Volleyball’s Been Served… For Sportsmanship

Wantagh High School’s boys volleyball players set the bar high for good sportsmanship, and that did not go unnoticed this past season. The team received the Sportsmanship Award from the Nassau County Volleyball Officials Association and were presented with their trophy at an end-of-season dinner.

The team is coached by Lisa Fugazzi, who said she is extremely proud of the 14 boys for how they conduct themselves as players. She noted that their collective commitment to academics, athletics and good character is what the Warriors are all about.

“It’s an honor that Wantagh was recognized

this year and it validates all of their hard work,” she said. “Winning or losing, it all comes down to character. The students on the boys volleyball team recognize that conduct and sportsmanship are important traits for athletes to have. This group of young me exemplified that.”

On Tuesday, December 20th, 2022, a program was held in the parking lot of the Mid Island Y JCC in Plainview to Shine A Light on antisemitism. Antisemitism, has, unfortunately, been intensifying through social media and pop culture.

During Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, Shine A Light has become a way for

communities, and elected officials to make the public aware of different forms of antisemitism and to speak out against it.

A Menorah was lit to celebrate the third night of Hanukkah during the event.

More than 200 people showed up to support this program including numerous dignitaries,

politicians, and organizations. In addition to the speakers, there were giveaways as well as entertainment including a DJ and firemen on top of a fire truck where they dispensed candy to children.

Stanley Samberg, The Forgotten Veteran

New York State commander of the Jewish War Veterans, Gary Glick received an email from Barbara Silberman about a World War II Veteran’s grave that had been forgotten about and was completely overgrown. She was at the Wellwood Cemetery visiting her parent’s grave, where she saw the grave of Stanley Samberg, a veteran, who died on December 17, 1944, at age 19. As his day of death is one day after the Battle of the Bulge, he may have died in that battle. Although Stanley Samberg died in 1944, he was not buried in Wellwood Cemetery until 1949 leading some to speculate that he may have originally been buried in Europe.

Ms. Silberman believes that there are no family members to take care of the grave. She said in her email “Having given his life for our country, he deserves our respect and something should be done.”

She contacted The National Jewish War Veterans in Washington D.C. who in turn gave her New York State Commander Gary Glick’s email.

Commander Glick contacted her and said that he would follow up to see what could be done. He went to the cemetery to find the grave with his wife Frann, who is legally blind and took some pictures of the grave. They decided that Veteran, Stanley Samberg should have a proper funeral, so he

played taps and put a JWV marker and a flag at his grave. Commander Glick contacted the Cemetery to have them clear the grave of the debris, which they agreed to do. After Commander Glick was notified that the grave was cleared of all the overgrown bushes, he went back to inspect the grave to make sure that it was done properly. He intends to follow up with the Cemetery to have them clean the footstone, and he hopes that the cemetery might consider doing something similar for other veterans’ graves where there are no friends or family to care for them.

Calhoun Students’ COORE FEE Store

The COORE FEE store began in 2019 at Sanford H. Calhoun High School as a student run coffee shop that offered opportunities for students in the special education program to experience an in-house vocational setting.

During the pandemic, however, business was put on hold due to health and safety concerns. They reopened this fall and revamped their mobile

COORE-FEE Store by creating a pop-up shop outside in the building’s B-wing hallway.

The reopening has been a great success. Students are busy creating seasonal treats, working at the hot chocolate bar and of course, serving coffee.

“COORE FEE also provides opportunities for socialization for our COORE students and, more importantly, work-based

learning opportunity inhouse for them,” explained Melissa Rohr, a special education chairperson. “I will say, this small business has become very popular around the building and the teachers and students are really grateful for everyone’s support.”

The store is open Tuesdays and Thursdays first and second period. Items start at just $1.

Helping You Help Others

The Charity of the Month for January is

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian is a local non-profit organization that began in 1995 as a therapeutic horseback riding program for individuals with disabilities and other vulnerable populations. They grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today!

“2023 will be a year of physical growth with our new educational center and treatment clinic, as well as spiritual growth by continuing to serve the many who need our 13 acre farm and herd to help them heal from trauma, grow in personal strength and learn new things to brighten their future,” said Lisa Gatti, Founder of Pal-O-Mine Equestrian. The organization will be o ering various events throughout 2023, some of which are noted below.

February 15th they will kick-o a 3 month virtual Hay Drive Fundraiser. “We’ve been holding this Fundraiser once a year for 3 years now because in the last few years the cost of hay has tripled,” said Lisa. “Every penny donated through this fundraiser goes directly to helping us buy hay for our herd. I’d like to warmly thank everyone in advance for their support and donations, it truly helps us more than you know.” This year they are proud to o er a new text to donate feature. More information is available on their website (www.pal-o-mine.org).

Additionally, May 3rd through May 7th from 9:30AM-2:30PM

they are holding their annual J-STEP Spring Craft Fair at their farm, located at 829 Old Nichols Road in Islandia.

J-STEP, which stands for Job Security Through Equine Partnership, is their Vocational Program. The program o ers a paid internship that runs 5 days per week for people with disabilities who are 18 years or older. Every item showcased at this fair is handcrafted by the J-STEP interns.

Lastly, May 4th from 6PM-9PM they will hold a Stable Spirits Art Show and Auction in their barn. This will be a night you won’t want to miss, filled with local wine and cheese, creativity and philanthropy! Pal-O-Mine will proudly feature up and coming artists in individual “stalls” in the barn and proceeds from each sale will go towards building their new educational center and clinic.

If you are interested in finding out more about their J-STEP Program or learning about the opportunity to have your art displayed at the Stable Spirits Art Show, contact Tessa at TessaVF@pal-o-mine. org. For more general information about Pal-O-Mine, call 631-348-1389, visit their website (www.pal-o-mine.org), Like them on Facebook and Follow them on Instagram.

TERMS OF SALE

Such tax liens shall be sold subject to any and all superior

tax liens of sovereignties and other municipalities and to all claims of record which the County may have thereon and subject to the provisions of the Federal and State Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts.

However, such tax liens shall have priority over the County’s Differential Interest Lien, representing the excess, if any, of the interest and penalty borne at the maximum rate over the interest and penalty borne at the rate at which the lien is purchased.

The Purchaser acknowledges that the tax lien(s) sold pursuant to these Terms of Sale may be subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/ or may become subject to such proceedings which may be commenced during the period in which a tax lien is held by a successful bidder or the assignee of same, which may modify a Purchaser’s rights with respect to the lien(s) and the property securing same. Such bankruptcy proceedings shall not affect the validity of the tax lien. In addition to being subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or the Federal and State Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts, said purchaser’s right of foreclosure may be affected by the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery and Enforcement Act(FIRREA),12 U.S.C. ss 1811 et.seq., with regard to real property under Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation(FDIC) receivership.

The County Treasurer reserves the right, without further notice and at any time, to withdraw from sale any of the parcels of land or premises herein listed. The Nassau County Treasurer

reserves the right to intervene in any bankruptcy case/ litigation where the property affected by the tax liens sold by the Treasurer is part of the bankruptcy estate. However, it is the sole responsibility of all tax lien purchasers to protect their legal interests in any bankruptcy case affecting their purchased tax lien, including but not limited to the filing of a proof of claim on their behalf, covering their investment in said tax lien. The Nassau County Treasurer and Nassau County and its agencies, assumes no responsibility for any legal representation of any tax lien purchaser in any legal proceeding including but not limited to a bankruptcy case where the purchased tax lien is at risk.

The rate of interest and penalty at which any person purchases the tax lien shall be established by his bid. Each purchaser, immediately after the sale thereof, shall pay to the County Treasurer ten per cent of the amount for which the tax liens have been sold and the remaining ninety per cent within thirty days after such sale. If the purchaser at the tax sale shall fail to pay the remaining ninety per cent within ten days after he has been notified by the County Treasurer that the certificates of sale are ready for delivery, then all amounts deposited with the County Treasurer including but not limited to the ten per cent theretofore paid by him shall, without further notice or demand, be irrevocably forfeited by the purchaser and shall be retained by the County Treasurer as liquidated damages and the agreement to purchase shall be of no further effect. Time is of the essence

in this sale. This sale is held pursuant to the Nassau County Administrative Code and interested parties are referred to such Code for additional information as to terms of the sale, rights of purchasers, maximum rates of interest and other legal incidents of the sale.

Furthermore, as to the bidding,

1. The bidder(s) agree that they will not work with any other bidder(s) to increase, maintain or stabilize interest rates or collaborate with any other bidder(s) to gain an unfair competitive advantage in the random number generator in the event of a tie bid(s) on a tax certificate. Bidder(s) further agree not to employ any bidding strategy designed to create an unfair competitive advantage in the tiebreaking process in the upcoming tax sale nor work with any other bidder(s) to engage in any bidding strategy that will result in a rotational award of tax certificates.

2. The tax certificate(s) the Bidder will bid upon, and the interest rate(s) bid, will be arrived at independently and without direct or indirect consultation, communication or agreement with any other bidder and that the tax certificate(s) the Bidder will bid upon, and the interest rate(s) to be bid, have not been disclosed, directly or indirectly, to any other bidder, and will not be disclosed, directly or indirectly, to any other bidder prior to the close of bidding. No attempt has been made or will be made to, directly or indirectly, induce any other bidder to refrain from bidding on any tax certificate, to submit

complementary bids, or to submit bids at specific interest rates.

3. The bids to be placed by the Bidder will be made in good faith and not pursuant to any direct or indirect, agreement or discussion with, or inducement from, any other bidder to submit a complementary or other noncompetitive bid.

4. If it is determined that the bidder(s) have violated any of these bid requirements then their bid shall be voided and if they were the successful bidder the lien and any deposits made in connection with said bid shall be forfeited.
