Approximately 20,000 Long Islanders who use the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) won’t have access to services during this week in January.

This month, WIC will adopt eWIC, an EBT Card System eliminating paper checks as vouchers.

WIC sites across Long Island will be closed from January 14-21 as the new system rolls out. WICs will reopen on January 22 at limited capacity.

Mothers who give birth during this time will be unable to access services for their newborn children.

Undocumented and immigrant clients,

already experiencing fear and anxiety about WIC adversely affecting their status, may experience trauma and anxiety, if they arrive at a closed office.

While the WIC closures are not due to the government shutdown, the timing presents a

The fifth- and sixthgrade student council from Chatterton School in Merrick recently assembled 22 boxes of food donations for local families in need. Through donations provided by Chatterton families and

staff, the students collected and packaged cans of food, cereal, pasta, stuffing, rice and beverages as well as assorted paper goods. Each box was carefully packed, decorated and wrapped with a special card.

Yes, we’re mixing cereal with chicken again, because it tastes great, and as Ella Micalizzi says, “Any kid will eat it!”

Ella Micalizzi of East Islip, New York swears by this concoction, dubbed Gurr Dorito Chicken. “A few years back my dad went to visit friends in Florida. His friends whipped up some Gurr Dorito Chicken.” Ella and her dad have been hooked ever since!

“This has become one of our favorite, quick meals, and we usually have it with brown rice and veggies.”

What You Will Need:

Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts Jar of Mayonnaise (or Veganese) Any Flavor of Doritos Butter or Non-Dairy Butter Substitute

Preparation:

Wash Chicken and Pat Dry Spread a Very Light Coating of Mayonnaise Onto Each Chicken Breast Crush and Generously Sprinkle Doritos Atop Chicken Drizzle Melted Butter Over Each Chicken Breast

Baking Instructions:

Bake at 350 Degrees for 30 Minutes

Writer-Director Visit Students in the BellmoreMerrick broadcasting program were recently visited by writer and director Jim Mendrinos of New Media Comedy in the studio, which is housed at Wellington C. Mepham High School.

Mendrinos, a veteran of 30 years in the television field, has spent time in the writers rooms of Saturday Night Live, WWE Wrestling and Head of the Class to name just a few of his credits. Mendrinos is also the author of the “Complete Idiots Guide

to Comedy Writing.”

“He offered the students insight into career opportunities in both the field of television production and the new opportunities advances in technology are providing in new media production,” explained teacher Stuart Stein.

After speaking and taking questions from the students, Mendrinos worked in small groups with the BCIII students on their current project on the power of video in story telling where they

will recreate a sketch from Saturday Night Live.

“As the owner of his own production company, Mendrinos was impressed with level of technical sophistication in the BMB studio and remarked that some of our equipment is on par with his own,” added Stein.

That’s what makes being a student athlete unbelievable. It gives us such joy that all of you will always have that feeling.”

Moving Forward In earlier days, that phrase was a direct signal to all troops that a real action was about to begin and was an assurance that the matter was handled properly.

Moving Forward to our current environment, a battle is raging full force but not in a wartime sense. It is something far more sinister. Simply put, I am referring to the current shutdown of our government, which has now gone on for several weeks. Some type of solution or compromise seems to get more difficult to reach with each passing day.

It is not in my domain to take sides here. Rather, I aim to review several factors which brought this into play. Our President strongly believes that a wall is necessary to reinforce our southern border against all enemies, and he has requested the sum of over five billion dollars to build it. Currently, he has the agreement and backing of the Senate, while the democrats (who control the House) feel that while border security is always

important, a wall is not the answer. They argue that the money would be better spent using more sophisticated electronic measures, additional border patrol agents and a revised policy on immigration laws.

While mentioned in the news every day, it’s easy to not recognize the sad plight of those men and woman who are directly affected by the shutdown in a crucial financial way.

For me, they are classified into three different groups.

1)Those working in a vital capacity: This group consists of people who must continue to do their jobs, but will not be paid for it until the shutdown is over. That would include air traffic controllers and TSA personnel (the people who check you in at the airport security gate).

2)Those working in a non-vital capacity: This group of people are mainly federal employees who do very

and is paid for by local school districts. It offers specialized training and instruction to students interested in pursuing careers in dance, drama, musical theatre, filmmaking, special effects, instrumental and vocal music, digital music, fine arts and digital media. As part of their professionallevel training, students regularly receive one-onone access to experienced professionals working in the industry. Students have recently benefitted from Master Classes and Workshops lead by pop-rock icon Billy Joel; actor and director Ralph Macchio; Eric Bloom of legendary classic rock band Blue Oyster Cult; alumnus Michael Trusnovec, lead dancer in the Paul Taylor Dance Company; sculptor Frank Porcu; and worldrenowned violinist Patrick Yim; to name only a few.

They also get to perform alongside Broadway stars

during the school’s annual fundraiser, Broadway Supports LIHSA. Alumni of the school have gone on to develop successful careers in all arts fields. In addition to landing starring roles on Broadway, alumni have danced with national touring companies, illustrated for New Yorkermagazine, designed successful swimsuit lines, and embarked on technical careers working for companies such as Cirque de Soleil and at landmarks such as Lincoln Center.

Graduates have also earned prestigious scholarships and grants to continue their education at some of the nation’s most highly esteemed colleges and conservatories, including the Juilliard School, Boston Conservatory, Cooper Union and the American Academy of dramatic Arts.

3)The Tale of the Forgotten: What most people do not realize is that we have several thousand contractors who do business with the federal government, and now have their contracts held up until the government reopens. Most of these folks are small independent business people, whose bulk of income comes from the federal government.

Our President has stated that this stalemate could go on for weeks and perhaps months. How do the above three categories of workers survive without a paycheck?

Unfortunately, this turn of events has badly split our country into two main factions. One group supports our President and remains committed with him to build the wall, and the other group remains

just as committed in opposing this plan. We pride ourselves in a democracy where all people may express themselves without fear of reprisal. However, I am reminded about the American civil war which pitted brother against brother. The psychological wounds suffered by both the north and the south continue to plague us. For example, there is still a raging battle about removing the monuments of Confederate generals in certain states and college grounds. Even the Union generals have now come under scrutiny.

For what it’s worth to my readers, I look beyond the above madness and have an underlying faith in our constitution and the American way. It may take some time for things to normalize, but it will happen.

HOBY Ambassador East Meadow High School sophomore Noah Diamond was recently selected as a Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership ambassador for the 201819 academic year.

Founded in 1958, HOBY is an organization that strives to inspire and develop youth and volunteers to a life

dedicated to leadership, service and innovation.

Noah will be an ambassador to participate in the Leadership Conference in June, when he will collaborate with leaders in the worlds of business, government, education and other professions.

The conference will also

include discussions on current world issues.

Selection is done through a rigorous process that included a writing portion as well as an interview process.

Wantagh Teacher Grant

Wantagh Middle School business teacher Nancy O’Connor received a 201819 Nassau Educators Federal Credit Union “Funding Your Ideas” teacher grant totaling $250.

Ms. O’Connor said the grant will fund the eighth-grade business management corporate social responsibility

project in which students make homemade fleece blankets for patients at the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island. The eighth-grade management class also runs the school store, where school supplies and snacks can be purchased throughout the year. During the school year, special sales profits fund the purchase of

additional no-sew blanket kits for students to make in concurrent years so the students can fulfill their corporate social responsibilities.

The district congratulates Ms. O’Connor on this outstanding accomplishment.

Jessica Metkiff, an English teacher at John F. Kennedy High School in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District, recently achieved National Board certification.

Metkiff is the second Bellmore-Merrick teacher to earn National Board recognition since 2002.

“During the process of earning National Board

certification, Jessica examined both the ways in which she presents information and the ways in which her students illustrate their growth,” explained English chair Adeline Atkins.

“Collaboration with other teachers prompted Jessica to support her traditional whole-class novel approach with that of a Book Club.”

This balanced approach to literary instruction challenges students to access their previous learning about detail selection, author’s purpose, and the writing process and to combine them with the expectations from their Socratic Seminars in order to produce both individual and collaborative work.

“The Book Clubs allow for enhanced

student interest as well as academically-driven activities that supported the traditional skills of the English classroom while providing students another opportunity to grow their love of reading,” added Atkins.

The National Board was created by teachers and represents a consensus among educators about what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do. The certification process requires that teachers demonstrate standardsbased evidence of the positive effect they have on student learning.

Student Standouts Students in the East Meadow School District recently took part in their respective school spelling and geography bees with winners being crowned the top among their peers.

W.T. Clarke Middle School seventh-grader Akrisht Kaul and Woodland Middle School eighthgrader Sarah Chacko each earned the distinction of

spelling bee champion at their school.

At the elementary level, Bowling Green Elementary School fifth-grader Althea Borleo won the bee by spelling the word “ecology.”

Muhammed Bisharat was the runnerup and he and Althea were the final two fifth-graders.

Both middle schools also recently hosted geography

bees, with eighth-grader Matthew Vo earning the championship at W.T. Clarke Middle School and seventh-grader Diego Melendez winning the Woodland Middle School contest.

The district congratulates these scholars for their accomplishments and wishes them luck in future contests.

Poetry Out Loud competitions were held at the high school level in mid-December in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District.

“After each performer had his or her chance to recite a selected poem, judges’ scores were tallied by a panel of English teachers,” explained Mary Donnelly, English chairperson.

At Sanford H. Calhoun

High School, winners were freshman Anneliese Marmol (first place) and sophomore Reza Aziz (second place).

“It was one of the best competitions we have ever had, and all participants performed well,” said Kim Serpe, English chairperson.

At Wellington C. Mepham High School, junior Candace Casimir (first place) and sophomore

Eimaan Khan (second place) were winners. At John F. Kennedy High School, winners were sophomore Gabriella Onesto (first place) and senior Jennifer Avezov (second place).

Winners move on to the regional competition on Feb. 8 at Nassau Community College.

The past year or so has left society reeling with the realization that many famous people are deeply flawed and sometimes do some very bad things. But why the shock and awe, and devastation? They’re only human, many of them with severe problems. As a culture, we have a bigger problem. We’ve

opportunity to visit several K-3 classrooms at Birch School and see how eSpark allows students to utilize different online materials and resources for blended learning aligned to leveled reading standards while meeting the different needs of individual students. eSpark, which is currently being used on iPads in the district, also enables teachers to deliver targeted small group instruction while saving valuable time in lesson planning.

Merrick teachers participated in a Q&A session with the visiting educators to share their insights on the benefits of the program, including how eSpark interphases with student schedules and work and allows them to create specific assignments for certain students or for grade-level curriculum, including for Fundations (reading, writing, phonetic awareness).

It’s Time to Turn Our Backs on False Idols “You shall have no other Gods before me” - Exodus 20:2-3

Merrick UFSD officials recently invited technology educators from local school districts on Long Island to observe how Merrick teachers are shaping the technology students use in the classroom on a daily basis through a personalized learning platform called eSpark. Merrick, which began using eSpark six years ago, is considered a model district for using the application.

Guests had the

allowed ourselves to worship false idols. Going back to the days of the O.J. Simpson trial that transfixed our nation, we couldn’t believe that this handsome, charismatic football superstar could actually be just a person who most likely committed a heinous crime.

Did you know the construct of “celebrity” is really only about 100 years old? That’s a drop in the bucket. Prior to 1920, there were no radios in people’s homes.

The first “talkie” film was around 1927, and televisions weren’t in homes until 1949. Up until the 20th century you could go to theatre, or read a book, magazine or newspaper. The media was a fraction of the size it is now, and people were community oriented.

The typical family was focused on their home, their community, their church or synagogue and their neighbors.

With the relatively recent constructs of record companies, movie studios, television studios and social media, executives needed to mythologize their stars in order to commoditize them.

They needed to strategize ways

to make you love entertainers so you would purchase albums and movie tickets, and tune into television programs. It generates advertising and sales revenue.

Don’t get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with enjoying entertainment. In fact, I believe that the arts are nourishing to the spirit and play an important role in our existence. But idol worship has led us down a murky path. In my journalistic work interviewing entertainers, I have tried to use that platform to peel away the celebrity veneer and show the person’s humanity to readers.

Maybe I have succeeded at this or maybe I have failed. That is up to you to decide. You’re entitled to your opinion either way.

With my son, I try to impart to him that although he can enjoy great music, theatre, film and television, the people he should be looking to as his role models are the people who touch his life on a daily basis; the people who care for him and his well being.

The only being that we pray to and worship in our home is G-d.

For that is as it should be.

Wantagh School Nurse

Victoria Alssid, school nurse at Forest Lake Elementary School in Wantagh, has received the 2018 Excellence in School Nursing Award. Bestowed by the New York State Association of School Nurses, Alssid received the accolade for having

exceled in her practice of school nursing.

Alssid has been a practicing nurse with the Wantagh School District for 10 years and is currently a member of the Nassau County Association of School Nurses. Previously, she served as a psychiatric nurse at Zucker Hillside Hospital in Queens, New York and as a pediatric nurse at Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

While raising her two sons, both of whom attended Wantagh schools, Alssid became familiar with the school nurse setting and regularly substituted

when her children were younger. She noted that her enjoyment in being a school nurse has always been her association with students.

“My goal is to help students become more in tune with their bodies and to figure out what tools they need to deal with stress,” Alssid said.

The Wantagh School District congratulates Alssid on this outstanding achievement and many thanks for service to the district’s students.

My Journey With Anxiety Many of you read my Living Well column each week where I shared what I have learned about living your best life. Like you, my wisdom was hard earned through years of ups and downs, and evolution.

One of my major downs was years of suffering with anxiety and panic attacks. Since having my book, Journaling Fame: A memoir of a life unhinged and on the record, come out in the spring of 2017, I have come to learn just how common this is. Forty million Americans suffer with, or have suffered from, various forms of anxiety, depression, OCD and panic attacks. If you are currently struggling with this, know that you are not alone.

Below is a small excerpt from my book to give you

an introduction to what I of anxiety did not cease; went through at my worst: my body showed me no mercy, perhaps because At 3 AM on a July 2012 my racing mind did not morning, I lay helpless extend that courtesy to on an emergency room my body. I was wrapped cot, unable to experience in a backless hospital any emotion other than gown and meagerly strewn blanket that had been nuked in a microwave to keep me warm. I was uncontrollably shaking and shivering from the inside out. I felt aches and pains and my eyes bulged with fright and confusion.

“What is happening to me?” I thought.

As a chronic baseline anxiety sufferer my entire life, I was in the throes of the worst and most extended episode of acute anxiety I’d ever known. I was experiencing five or fear and the physical six full blown panic attacks sensations that racked my per day, generalized body. My extreme levels anxiety, agoraphobia

and unbearable physical sensations. I feared I was dying, or worse, losing my mind and “going crazy,” a common fear among those with anxiety and panic disorder.

It all started when I was seven or eight years old (the age my son is now) and I began to experience intense feelings of worry connected to my physical health. As I reached my preteen years my anxiety grew more ambitious and branched out to what we now commonly refer to as OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). But at twelve years old it just kind of felt like this: “Lock the door and check it three times or something bad might happen.”

“Touch the wall as you walk by if you want to stay

safe.”

You might recognize the above as obsessivecompulsive thoughts and behaviors or “magical thinking,” and you may have even experienced something resembling it.

By the time I was a teenager I had graduated to the trifecta: anxiety/ panic, OCD and depression.

It was also around this time that I discovered that my well of creativity, intuition and compassion ran deep. The spoken and written word became my solace, and the gift I felt I had to offer the world. My highly sensitized being may have created anxiety, but it also blossomed into an ability to connect with others in a rarefied way, and to express myself as a successful journalist and writer.

This excerpt from my book was also published by the ADAA - Anxiety and Depression Association of America, with the purpose of lending my voice and support to this community.

After years of asking, “Why me?” I never again have to ask that question.

Through sharing my story in the media, and through speaking engagements, I have turned it around from a challenge to a gift.

Myths And Facts About Recycling Cartons (NAPSI)—Recycling is one of the easiest ways the average person can help the environment. Not only does recycling prevent items from ending up in landfills, it reduces the amount of raw materials used to make new products. Here are some myths and facts about recycling commonly used

food and beverage cartons: Myth: Cartons can’t be recycled.

Fact: Cartons are certainly recyclable.

They can be turned into new products, such as paper towels, tissues and writing paper. They can also be turned into environmentally friendly building materials, in a

process that uses no water or chemicals.

Myth: If a package doesn’t have a recycling logo on it, it’s not recyclable.

Fact: What can and can’t be recycled varies by community and is primarily dependent on the recycling facility.

Cartons can carry the

standard “Please Recycle” logo under the Federal Trade Commission’s green guidelines. It’s best to contact your community or check its website to find out what can and can’t be recycled.

Myth: You have to put your recyclables in a plastic bag and then in your recycling bin.

Fact: Plastic bags can jam up equipment at recycling centers, slowing everything down and potentially preventing recyclables from getting recycled. Instead, place materials loosely in recycling bins or carts.

Myth: You have to crush cartons and remove the caps and straws before

recycling them.

Fact: Just empty any remaining product. No crushing is required, and the caps can be left on.

You may want to stuff the straws back into the carton to make sure they don’t become litter.
