(NAPSI)—Conserving gasoline saves motorists money and lessens America’s dependence on foreign oil. These gas-saving tips are from the experts at the non-profit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), the group that tests and certifies automotive technicians. • Keep tires properly inflated and wheels in alignment. • Clean out clutter and unnecessary items to lessen the burden on the engine. • Consolidate trips and errands; try to travel when traffic is light to avoid stopand-go conditions.

• Go easy on sudden, hard accelerations; don’t speed; anticipate traffic patterns ahead and adjust your speed gradually. • Keep the engine running at its peak by replacing filters and fluids as recommended in the owner’s manual and having engine performance problems such as rough idling corrected. • Use windows and airconditioning wisely. At highway speeds, it’s better to keep windows up (and air-conditioning on, if wanted) to reduce air drag. But turn off the A/C in stopand-go traffic to save fuel.

Why And How To Get A Better Night’s Sleep (NAPSI)—If you ever find yourself lying awake at night, you’re not alone— even if no one else is in the room. That’s because, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than one-quarter of the U.S. population reports occasionally not getting enough sleep, while nearly 10 percent experience chronic insomnia. Why To Sleep Good sleep, says the CDC, can decrease the risk of sickness and weight gain. It helps you think more clearly, decreases stress, and leaves you more energetic and productive. As these qualities improve, relationships tend to improve, too. Lack of sleep can be a problem on the job,

IOUS GIVE DELIC

too. A study by the Law Enforcement Survival Institute showed that in a computer simulated shoot/don’t shoot situation, fatigued police officers were more likely to shoot when not necessary. What To Do Many sleep specialists recommend these four steps: 1. Don’t drink caffeine late in the day. 2. Make sure your bedroom is a quiet, dark and relaxing environment; neither too hot nor too cold. 3. Make sure your bed is comfortable and don’t use it for reading, watching TV or listening to music. 4. Take a bath before bedtime.

One of the more popular tourist attractions in the United States is also a popular place to tie the knot. The bright lights of the Las Vegas strip and the surrounding area have drawn visitors for decades. Las Vegas also is home to more than 100,000 weddings per year, according to Clark County Clerk marriage license records. Weddings may be performed at local churches or other houses of worship, inside lavish casinos, or at the bevy of small chapels in and around Las Vegas. Las Vegas is sometimes referred to as “The Marriage Capital of the World” thanks in part to the ease of acquiring a marriage license in the city and the minimal costs involved to tie the knot. But Las Vegas is more than just a popular place to tie the knot. According to data gathered by Facebook in 2014, when the social media service compiled data from users “check ins,” Las Vegas also has grown into a popular honeymoon destination. In addition, Las Vegas also has evolved into a popular spot to celebrate one last hurrah before the big wedding day. Individuals frequently plan bachelor or bachelorette party weekends that incorporate all of the fun Las Vegas has to offer.

Career Path

According to a University of Phoenix survey, employers are looking for employees who possess competency in management (56 percent), critical thinking (52 percent) and communication (50 percent). Kevin Wilhelmsen at University of Phoenix said an MBA can help develop or improve professional soft skills while remaining relevant to their career path.

(NAPSI)—If you’re like 82 percent of Americans, you may be concerned about retirement, according to the Employment Benefit Research Institute. Fortunately, you may have a brighter future if you heed five hints from Ray LeVitre, CFP, author of “20 Retirement Decisions You Need To Make Right Now” as well as founder and managing partner

of Net Worth Advisory Group—a firm specializing in retirement financial planning. 1. Track your expenses now. Gradually adjust your expenditures toward the budget you’ll have in retirement. 2. Start living like a retiree. Change your lifestyle to reflect how it might be in retirement. That might mean

downsizing your home, reducing your leisure travel or driving a more efficient car. 3. Increase your savings. Within 15 years of retirement, contribute a minimum of 15 percent of earnings toward retirement. 4. Explore your Social Security options. Postponing benefits until age 70 can significantly

boost lifetime income. Explore spousal benefits, too. 5. Don’t invest too conservatively. A broadly diversified, well-balanced portfolio of equities, bonds and cash offers the best opportunity to maintain the necessary growth of capital while minimizing volatility.

(NAPSI)—A few simple steps, when it comes to ladders, could save 300 lives a year, according to the World Health Organization. In addition, 164,000 emergency room treatments could be avoided. The Problem The number of ladderrelated injuries in the United Sates increased by more than 50 percent in 15 years, says a study in an issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. Helpful Hints These tips from the Consumer Product Safety Commission can help prevent you from becoming such a statistic: • Always level the ladder on firm ground. • Have someone hold the lower end. • Keep ladders away from doors that can be opened. • Only one person on a ladder. • Don’t stand on the top rung. An Answer Many ladder accidents are related to gutter cleaning and maintenance. It’s a hazard homeowners face several times every year. A good way to eliminate it is to get rid of your gutters and install the time-tested Rainhandler ( r a i n h a n d l e r. c o m ) Rain Dispersal system. Because of a patented louver design these gutters cannot collect leaves or debris and require no cleaning or maintenance. You may never have to climb a dangerous ladder to clean gutters again. Learn More Visit www.rainhandler. com or phone (800) 942-3004 for further information.

Chatterton School Donates Dolls

NASSAU ZONE 1 - NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY JANUARY 15, 2020 • www.southbaysneighbor.com

Chatterton School recently donated approximately 25 new or gently used dolls to the dementia unit at the Amber Court assisted living facility in Westbury. Chatterton second grade teacher Debra

Levins dropped off the donations to Amber Court prior to the holiday break. Dolls are widely used as an effective way to decrease stress and agitation in people living with Alzheimer’s disease or any

kind of dementia. A caregiver can also use doll therapy for  dementia  patients as a way to bring responsibility, caring and structure back into their lives.

Kennedy Hosts Alumni Day This year’s Alumni Day, held on Dec. 18, featured Dr. Jonathan Haas, a class of 1984 graduate and creator of the premiere Cyberknife program in the country. Members of the Student Government worked to pull off the day’s events, which also included a guest

speaker panel of recent graduates who shared their collegiate and career experiences. “We reached out to the main speaker, who offered students an indepth glimpse into a future career in the medical field,” said Student Government Vice President Brett

Schutzman. “Then we organized hosting a panel of other recent graduates, each who had a different take on their time at college.” Current students and alumni gathered in the library after the speaking panel for bagels and conversation.

Throughout the month of December, the K-Kids service organization from Bowling Green Elementary School in the East Meadow School District collected 19 boxes of books to be donated to children in the community. The K-Kids organization is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club. Kiwanis members work with K-Kids to teach

leadership skills, character building and to encourage loyalty to the community. The Charity of the Month for January is: YMCA Long Island www.ymcali.org

The YMCA of Long Island is a leading nonprofit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors,

Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more. The Y believes that when people come together for a common cause, the entire community is strengthened. When someone becomes a volunteer, they have the opportunity to share their blessings with those who need it most. You can take an active role in strengthening your community by volunteering at the Y! Volunteers can serve on their Board of Directors/ Board of Managers/ committees, raise funds to ensure their organization is accessible to all members of the community, motivate and support youth, extend a hand to help adults who want to do more, be more or live healthier, advocate for their efforts and participate in opportunities to give back and support neighbors. You can call 855.2YMCALI to get information on volunteering at a branch near you! For additional information on the YMCA of Long Island, please visit www.ymcali.org.

achieve it. • Assess the Cost of Being You: If your expenses or debt outpace your income, then it’s very difficult to live the best version of your life. Rather than continuously playing catch-up, track your spending to discover new ways to reduce monthly expenses. Apply those savings towards selfinvestment. • Understand Smart vs. Dumb Money: Not all dollars spent hold the same value. Knowing the difference between “smart” and “dumb” money is key to building a solid financial foundation, according to Harper, who says that “dumb money” is spending on things like credit card interest or items that lose value quickly, whereas “smart money” is spending on things that pay dividends, like an education or home. • Control Your Credit Score: A good credit score can help you gain access to capital with better terms at affordable rates. To improve it, pay bills on time and use a resource like Experian Boost, which is a free online tool that

allows you to add positive payment history from utility and telecom bills to your Experian credit file, which can increase your score instantly. • New Year, New You: “We’re starting a new decade and what better opportunity is there to do a complete financial makeover?” says Harper, who recommends many other steps that will set you up for financial success, including building an emergency fund, securing health insurance, avoiding debt for unnecessary purchases and investing wisely. “No one has a crystal ball, but given lower unemployment rates and low interest rates, 2020 could be a good year to have a plan for growth. A diversified portfolio for this next decade is a good portfolio,” says Harper. More tips from Harper can be found at www.experian. com/education. While managing finances can seem intimidating, identifying trouble spots is the first step toward conquering your goals. (StatePoint)

The Birch, Chatterton and Norman J. Levy Lakeside elementary schools of the Merrick School District will hold registration for September 2020 kindergarten classes from Monday, Feb. 3 through Friday, Feb. 7, 2020. Children who will reach the age of 5 on or before Dec. 1, 2020, are eligible. To register a child, parents are asked to call their neighborhood school between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to make an appointment. Anyone unsure of their child’s neighborhood school should call the Merrick UFSD Transportation Office at 516-992-7285. On the day of registration, parents/ guardians are required to bring the original birth or baptismal certificate (with a raised seal on either document) and are expected to bring health forms signed by your physician, indicating the completion of all required immunizations. To ensure that children entering and attending school are adequately immunized against vaccine-preventable diseases, the New York State Department of Health

Immunization Program, in accordance with ACIP guidelines, revised its immunization requirements for school entry: • 4-5 doses of diphtheria, tetanus, acellular pertussis.* • 3-4 doses of polio.** • 2 doses of MMR (measles, mumps, rubella). • 3 doses of hepatitis B. • 2 doses of varicella vaccine or documentation of proof of disease. All immunization documents are required at kindergarten registration. School nurses will review all documents and will inform parents if a child requires any additional vaccines in order to begin school in September. In the event these requirements are not met by the first day of school, according to New York State law, parents are permitted a 14-day grace period as stipulated under PHL Section 2165 (measles, mumps and rubella requirements). If these requirements are still not met after the grace period, children in question will be excluded from school

until the requirements are met. Parents are advised to direct any questions to their respective school’s nurse or their child’s pediatrician. In order to substantiate residency, a deed or a lease, a driver’s license, and three utility bills (e.g. telephone, PSEG Long Island, National Grid, heating oil and cable/internet bills) must be presented at the appointment. Parents will receive a packet of paperwork in the mail prior to registration week. When coming to the school for the scheduled meeting, parents must bring the completed packet. It is not necessary to bring the child to the registration appointment. For further information, parents should contact their child’s neighborhood school of attendance at the telephone numbers listed below: Birch School: 516-992-7250 or 516-992-7251 Chatterton School: 516-992-7270 or 516-992-7271 Norman J. Levy Lakeside School: 516-992-7230 or 516-992-7231

At the same time that Americans are feeling the financial pinch of the holidays, they’re gearing up for 2020, with their top two goals being to save more and increase their credit scores, according to a national consumer survey by Experian. Almost three out of four consumers surveyed are motivated to improve their finances. To reach their New Year goals, survey respondents say they’ll spend less money to improve their credit score (59%) and pay off credit card debt (58%). To help get you started, Experian Boost ambassador, actor and financial empowerment activist, Hill Harper is providing these money tips: • Create a Financial Blueprint: The first step is to create a blueprint identifying your money, saving and investing goals. Examine your priorities and determine how much money you require to meet your basic needs. From there, you should assess what else you need to be happy and how you can use money as a resource to

Northwell Health Named A Top 2020 Military Friendly Organization

NASSAU ZONE 1 - NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY JANUARY 15, 2020 • www.southbaysneighbor.com

TOP 2020 MILITARY FRIENDLY ORGANIZATION - Northwell President and CEO Michael J. Dowling (left) thanks Dr. Omar Bholat, a surgeon at North Shore University Hospital, upon his return to work after a fifth tour overseas. Northwell employees returning from deployment get checks representing the difference between their military pay and the regular salaries. Photo courtesy of Northwell Health.

Attention - Parents Of 4-Year-Olds Parents who have a child/children residing in the Levittown School District and have attained the age of four years on or before Dec. 1, 2020 are invited to apply for admission, on behalf of their child, to the Universal Pre-Kindergarten Program during the 2020-2021 school year. The program is a half day program which will be housed at one of our UPK providers beginning in Sept. 2020 for 180 days through June 2021, roughly coinciding with the Levittown School District calendar. The program has limited space and participants will be chosen during a random lottery selection process. A waiting list will be established to fill any vacancies that may arise.

All students must be potty trained and be fully immunized by the start of school in Sept. 2020. If you are interested, please visit www.levittownschools.com. Under “Attention Parents of Four Year Olds,” please click the interest form in blue, follow the link indicated and fill in all the information. It must be submitted online no later than Feb. 28, 2020. Please note, one interest form per family. If more than one interest form is received, your entry into the lottery for the Universal Pre-K could be in jeopardy. You will receive a confirmation email that it was received and then a notification of when the drawing is being held. You do not need to be present during

the drawing. Those selected in the random lottery process will be notified by email and receive a district registration packet, in the mail, in order for placement to be finalized. If you receive an email that you are on the waiting list after the drawing and receive a number, that is your number on the waitlist. If a spot becomes available, you will be notified. There is nothing further for you to do at that time. This program is fully funded by a New York State Department of Education grant. All placements in the program are fully contingent upon the continued reauthorization of Universal Pre-Kindergarten grant. Please call Arlene Mege at 516-434-7058 with any questions.

NEW HYDE PARK, NY – Northwell Health has been selected as a 2020 Military Friendly organization in four categories – top 10 employer, supplier diversity, brand and company – as one of the nation’s top organizations for military veterans. As New York State’s largest health system and biggest private employer with more than 70,000 employees, Northwell also is one of the largest employers of veterans and offers a host of programs that support service members and their families, from jobs fairs and educational opportunities to behavioral health programs in concert with the US Department of Veterans Affairs. “We’re proud to support our veterans and their families by providing resources and career opportunities throughout our health system,” said Michael J. Dowling, Northwell’s president and chief executive officer. “Over the past two years, we hired more than 500 veterans into the health system, a commitment to those who served and a smart business decision on our part. Hire a veteran and you’ll understand what I mean. Few people are better motivated or equipped to contribute to the workforce than veterans.” Among the veteran initiatives Northwell Health has enacted: • By partnering with 160 organizations that work with veterans, Northwell hosts various recruitment, networking and interview days as well as its homegrown Barracks to Business Workshop to educate transitioning veterans regarding resume building. • A veteran-focused business employee resource group, known as Veterans and Allies: Liaisons of Reintegra-

tion (VALOR), provides an increased sense of community to these heroes and a chance to gain insight from each other and share their experiences. VALOR helps veterans with employment and medical care.  • Employees returning from deployment receive checks representing the difference between their military pay and the regular salaries they would have received had they not taken military leave. • A first-of-its-kind Unified Behavioral Health Center in Bay Shore – jointly operated by Northwell and the Northport VA Medical Center – helps military veterans and their families cope with the emotional burdens they face when they return home. • Extending its commitment to service members beyond the organization, Northwell created “Side By Side: A Celebration of Service,” a day-long celebration of military service in Manhattan that coincided with Fleet Week in May 2019. Northwell plans to host the event again in 2020. “It’s our distinct honor and privilege to deploy our administrative and clinical capabilities to improve how our military access services, employment and support,” said Juan Serrano, associate vice president of Northwell’s Office of Military and Veterans Liaison Services and himself a Marine veteran. “In 2019, we proudly provide the most health care to active duty members, veterans and their families in New York.” Military Friendly weighed companies based on six criteria: Hiring and

Onboarding, Opportunity and Advancement, Culture and Commitment, Support and Retention, Policies and Compliance, along with Recruiting and Sourcing. Northwell Health greatly exceeded the standard in each. “We are proud to support transitioning veterans in finding their next mission,” said Cheryl Davidson, senior director of Workforce Readiness at Northwell. “Our programs were developed to ease their assimilation from military service to civilian careers.” For more information about Military Friendly, click here: https://www. militaryfriendly.com/ About Northwell Health Northwell Health is New York State’s largest health care provider and private employer, with 23 hospitals, about 750 outpatient facilities and more than 13,600 affiliated physicians. We care for over two million people annually in the New York metro area and beyond, thanks to philanthropic support from our communities. Our 70,000 employees – 16,000-plus nurses and 4,000 employed doctors, including members of Northwell Health Physician Partners – are working to change health care for the better.  We’re making breakthroughs in medicine at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research.
