According to AmeriCorps, Martin Luther King Day is the only federal holiday in the United States that is designated as a national day of service. Martin Luther King Day takes place each year on the third Monday in January. In 2021, Martin Luther King Day will be celebrated on January 18. The day honors Martin Luther King, Jr., an influential leader in the civil rights movement who embraced nonviolent activism. Despite his status as an advocate for nonviolence, Martin Luther King, Jr. was violently gunned down in Memphis, Tennessee in 1968. A campaign to declare his birthday a national holiday was started shortly after King’s assassination.

However, the holiday was not officially observed until 1986, and that observation was not nationwide. It was not until 2000 that all 50 states observed Martin Luther King Day.

The Charity of the Month for January is

Angels of Long Island is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that somewhat formed itself back in 2015.

Debbie and Brittany, a mother and daughter duo turned a small Facebook group into a fast growing nonprofit organization that helps countless Long Islanders in need. Six years ago these two ladies knew of someone in need of clothing and simply wanted to see if they could be of help. They decided to start a Facebook group in hopes of spreading the word and receiving donations for this person in need. They posted a message and went on with their day, later checking in to find themselves overwhelmed with the response.

Whoever doubts that there aren’t people with good hearts that are willing to help a neighbor in need is wrong, fortunately! Debbie and Brittany named the Facebook group Angels of Long Island and members would post about ways they could help others in crisis on Long Island. The group continued to gain in momentum and members, so much so that Debbie and Brittany decided to open up a storefront location in Patchogue called Angels of Long Island.

Their slogan Neighbors helping neighbors is a great reflection of what this thriving thrift store/boutique/donation center does. “We work so hard to keep our store clean and beautiful so that all of our customers who walk through our doors feels a sense of dignity and respect shopping at our store,” says Debbie. “We are not like your average thrift store! We carry designer brands and offer a unique experience. I did not expect to be running a thriving non-profit organization that has a storefront on Long Island and helps so many in need when I made that Facebook group years ago. What has come since that group was formed is truly a miracle.”

The mission of this non-profit is to assist and advocate for people in our Long Island community who are in need of assistance. Their goal is to empower people to overcome poverty and live prosperous lives. They truly provide a wide range of services and goods to people in crisis, however anyone can come shop at their Patchogue store, which has recently expanded, located at 350-23 East Main Street.

The store is proud to take many types of donations. They now accept bottle and can donations every MondaySaturday from 9AM-3PM, where you can simply pull up curbside, pop your trunk and a team member will take the donations for you. All bottles and cans must be marked New York state deposit and no broken glass bottles are able to be accepted. Please remember to separate glass items from plastic items before you donate them. Pickups at your residence are available for large quantities of recyclables.

Additionally, they accept other donations, such as new or gently used clothing, housewares, home decor and furniture. All proceeds from this store go directly to help Long Island residents in need.

Lastly, if you have some free time on your hands and are comfortable volunteering at the store, please contact Debbie at 631.205.3458. During this pandemic, Angels of Long Island is short staffed and looking for help. Their store is cleaned every morning and masks are required there. Please only consider volunteering if you are not showing any covid symptoms. Everyone’s safety is their first priority.

Melanie Volz To Publish In Prestigious Science Journal Wantagh High School senior Melanie Volz was selected as the winner of the 2020 Synapse and Yale Scientific Magazine scholarship contest. As a winner, Melanie will receive a $200 scholarship award, an exclusive one-onone workshop with a Yale Scientific Magazine editor and a feature in the prestigious magazine.

Her entry, “Why Society,?” answered the question presented by contest officials about how she envisions science should interact with society. In addition

to referencing the confusion, doubt, fear, ethics and morals that determine whether or not individuals accept scientific concepts, Melanie clearly lays out her belief that the scientific community should become “more relatable with the public and explain concepts clearly.”

Melanie wrote, “People should be able to have access to any proper evidence to help them formulate their beliefs. It’s difficult to have everyone to agree with every idea. Create.

Recovered COVID-19 Patients Battling Long-Term Health Effects

COVID-19 has impacted tens of thousands of Long Islanders, and many who have recovered from the virus are now combatting a variety of lingering health issues as a result.

Known as “long-haulers” these individuals are living with the chronic effects of the virus that can include organ damage, poor lung function, fatigue, muscle aches, cognitive slowing and headaches. Also, long-

haulers still exhibit various symptoms of COVID even after testing negative for the virus.

“The long-lasting health effects of COVID-19 could affect anyone at any age, but appears to be more likely with those over the age of 50,” said Director of Infectious Disease at Catholic Health Service’s (CHS) St. Francis Hospital Alan M. Bulbin, M.D. “Those with other comorbidities, chronic illnesses or those

who have had a more serious acute infection are also more likely to be impacted.

But we have also seen younger patients show longterm health impacts after recovering from the virus.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said it is actively working to learn more about the range of short- and longterm health effects associated with COVID-19. CDC officials said continued research is

revealing that many organs, including the lungs and heart, are impacted by the virus.

Dr. Bulbin recommends that medical treatment for long-haulers should be managed by an individual’s primary care physician.

He said the challenge currently facing doctors in treating those with longlasting health results from COVID-19 is identifying the proper treatment regimen.

To help those dealing with long-term health effects of COVID-19, CHS’s St. Charles Hospital now offers a Post-COVID Outpatient Rehabilitation Program.

Patients who are at least 14 days past a COVID-19 diagnosis are provided medically-supervised physical therapy for endurance training, strength training and education.

Recognizing a need to develop a program

specifically for patients who are dealing with the aftereffects of COVID-19, the medical team at St. Charles used their experience in working with patients who have respiratory illnesses such as emphysema or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Hundreds of children on Long Island and throughout the region, many of them facing medical crises, will have their holiday season brightened this year thanks to the Unity Holiday All Stars toy drive, which collected more than 650 toys on Sunday, Dec. 6.

With COVID-19

restricting crowds and gatherings, this year’s collection was a “driveby” drop-off, with local volunteers collecting toys in a contactless pickup from donors’ cars.

Donating families received to-go arts and crafts sets as a thank-you.
