t Lee Road School in Levittown, students donned their snuggly pajamas in preparation for a proverbial train ride on the Polar Express, author Chris Van Allsburg’s old-fashioned steam train that takes children to the North Pole for Santa’s departure on his annual sleigh ride.

After reading the popular tale, The Polar Express, the students each received a golden train ticket to participate in English language arts activities relating to the book.

Julie Christodovlo of Herricks High School, a student in the Personal Trainer and Exercise Medicine course at Nassau BOCES Barry Tech, was recently a finalist in the coveted Vanguard Award.

Julie is one of only 16 finalists statewide for the award, which will be presented this spring to the top eight contenders.

The Vanguard Award is presented by The Association of Career and Technical Education Administrators (ACTEA) to students breaking new ground in career and technical education. The award is ACTEA’s way of recognizing exceptional students who are following academic and career paths that defy conventional gender roles.

ACTEA advocate for students enrolled in programs that prepare them for nontraditional careers. They help to set

instructional standards for all New York State CTE programs through continual curriculum development.

ACTEA works to improve education through leadership, advocacy, policy influence, guidance and technology.

“Students like Julie are the future of the American workforce,” said Barry Tech Interim Principal Laurie Harris. “At Barry Tech, it is our goal to teach our students the skills they need for employment and to give them direction for college. The guests have gone. The last of the leftovers have been eaten. Presents have been tried on, shown off, returned; in some cases, re-gifted. The decorations have been packed away for another year. The holiday season, which we look forward to each year with such eager anticipation… gone in a matter of days.

I’m experiencing a little holiday withdrawal myself.

There is something about taking down the Christmas tree, unplugging the lights one last time and surveying a now barren-looking home that just feels… well, depressing is what it feels.

Downright melancholy, in fact. Gone is the sparkle of the season.

Apologies to those with birthdays and other similarly cheery milestones in the month of January, but, with the exception of New Year’s Day, it seems that nothing particularly exciting occurs until the groundhog makes his scheduled appearance on February 2nd – and that, only in the case of his shadow being absent, signaling the coming of spring.

Not that we should be complaining about the winter weather we’ve been having up to this point. A light dusting of snow once, temperatures hovering above normal for much of the last several months – we have been quite fortunate compared to the last several winters. Unless you favor the four-hour commute home

on Long Island’s slippery roadways with hundreds of your fellow drivers, the backbreaking shoveling and the bone chilling frost, we are holding up quite well thus far.

Sure January is the month of new beginnings and attempts to overhaul our lives. What better time to get those finances in order, shred old documents, do some deep cleaning around the house? Of course, none of these things evokes quite the same sense of excitement as celebrations with family and friends, productive though they may be.

Such is January. Such is winter. Such is life. As Billy Joel sang, “It’s either sadness or euphoria.” Rarely anything in between.

During January, Cervical Health Awareness Month, the Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) wants to spread the word that cervical cancer is preventable and highly treatable if found early.

Getting screened for cervical cancer with a Pap test is the key to prevention and survival. Screening is available to both insured and uninsured women at NUMC. “The New York State Department of Health’s Cancer Services Program (CSP) provides free cervical cancer screening to uninsured women — a subpopulation of women less likely to get screened,” said Victor F. Politi, MD, FACP, FACEP, NuHealth/ NUMC’s President/CEO. “According to the most recent New York State data, about 70% of women without insurance have had a Pap test, compared to roughly 85% of women with health insurance.”

The impact of insurance status on screening behavior was recently highlighted by

cancer screening to eligible New York State residents. There usually aren’t any symptoms of cervical cancer in its earliest, most treatable stage, making regular Pap tests the key to an early diagnosis.

“It is especially important for women who have not had a Pap test within the past five years to get screened. Six out of ten cervical cancers occur in women who have never received a Pap test or have not had one in the past five years. Don’t delay, talk to your doctor or call the Cancer Services Program at NUMC,” (516.572.3300) said Dr. John Riggs, Chair of OB/GYN at NUMC. American Cancer Society researchers. They found that the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was likely the cause of a large increase in the number of younger women (under the age of 26) getting diagnosed for cervical cancer at an early stage. The ACA allows for dependents to remain on their parents’ health insurance until the age of 26, giving these women the opportunity to get Pap tests, which can find cervical cancer early.

“It’s wonderful that the ACA has helped some women get screened for cancer, but the fact remains that there are people who still remain uninsured,” said Dr. Politi. “The Cancer Services Program is here to provide life-saving cancer screening to our most needy residents.”

The New York State Cancer Services Program provides free cervical cancer screening to uninsured women, ages 40 and older, in every county and borough of the state.

In the East Meadow School District, Bowling Green Elementary School English as a New Language (ENL) students directed a movie defining peace.

Prior to the film’s creation, students read “What Does Peace Feel Like” by Vladimir Radunsky and “Peace Begins With

You” by Katherine Scholes.

Inspired by these books, students wrote their own “peace” narratives explaining their personal definition of peace. Peace was defined as spending time with their family, helping others when they’re down and being nice to all.

After the peace narratives were complete, they were arranged into a digital movie with music and student voiceovers.

Proud of their work, ENL teachers organized a movie premier including a red carpet with gold stars for these actors and actresses to sign their names.

Healthy Lifestyle In the Merrick School District, Lakeside Elementary School fifthgraders enrolled in a fitness boot camp to maintain their healthy lifestyle during the holiday season.

F i f t h - g r a d e r s participated in Be1st Fitness’ boot camp where they learned about the significance of exercise,

living a healthy lifestyle and the importance of correctly performing the exercise through various exercise circuits. The boot camp consisted of bodyweight exercises such as pushups, sit-ups and squats to challenge students’ core muscles. Students also strengthened their heart through aerobic exercises

In addition, fifth-graders ran through obstacles such as agility latters and small hurdles to assist with coordination.

Kindness Matters As part of Levittown School District’s Get a Voice character education program, Lee Road thirdgrade students in Rochelle Cascio’s class studied the importance of friendship and the characteristics of a good friend.

During the classroom’s

Kindness Week, the students were instructed to perform one act of kindness without the expectation of praise. They also secretly picked a kindness buddy and revealed their choice with the crafting of a colorful card.

During a writing

assignment, the students also wrote about how to be a good friend. Classroom discussion also included topics about acts of kindness, and each student read compliments to one another from a kindness jar.

All Aboard Kindergarten students at Lee Road School in Levittown donned their snuggly pajamas in preparation for a proverbial train ride on the Polar Express, author Chris Van Allsburg’s old-

fashioned steam train that takes children to the North Pole for Santa’s departure on his annual sleigh ride.

After reading the popular tale, “The Polar Express,” the students each received a golden train ticket to

participate in English language arts activities relating to the book. They contrasted the film to the book and, using all of their senses, described hot cocoa.

Representatives from 26 colleges and universities across the country recently visited Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) and were impressed with what they saw. More than 100 teen artists met with the reps at this year’s College Fair, making a profoundly positive first impression.

“After the event, a number of college representatives called and emailed saying how impressed they were by our students’ talent and professionalism,” explained LIHSA Guidance Counselor Melissa Stencel.

“They were equally impressed by how well prepared the students were for the college application process.”

Among the colleges represented were Boston University, Penn State, New York University, Wagner College, Montclair State

University, James Madison, Hofstra University, PACE, the Fashion Institute of Technology and several SUNY schools.

“Hosting the annual College Fair provides our students with an opportunity to acquaint themselves with the programs of more than 25 colleges, universities and conservatories,” said Jack Lenson, Interim Principal of LIHSA. “This helps students to evaluate their options and make informed decisions about college applications. The Fair also gives college representatives an opportunity to see our students perform and to affirm that our students will make substantial contributions to their programs.”

At LIHSA, college prep is serious business and students put a lot of work into it. They

are guided through the process step-by-step by their program directors, guidance counselors and teachers, who help them with everything from college applications and essays, to portfolio reviews and prescreening of performance recordings.

Once all the applications have been submitted, the process of individualized scholarship searches begins.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for our students,” Ms. Stencel said of the Fair. “They are able to network with colleges on their home turf, allowing the representatives to see where they perfect their craft. It can be overwhelming at first, but our artists rose to the challenge. Student response was fantastic they really impressed the representatives.”

Now in its 22nd year of helping develop and support mentoring programs for over 57,000 young people, the Mentoring Partnerships of New York City and Long Island announce they will combine their organizations and expand their footprint to include most of New York State.

The newly formed, Mentor New York, will grow to support an additional 400 new programs and 8,000 young people over the course of 2016, with regions including Albany, Rockland County, Buffalo and Rochester as initial key target regions.

Mentoring Partnership Expands as the host to the 2016 GradNation Community Summit, with U.S. Senator Steve Israel as the Honorable Chair. The GradNation campaign was created by the America’s Promise Alliance to help increase graduation rates for youths. The 2016 GradNation Community Summit organized by Mentor New York, will be held in March on the campus of LIU Post in Brookville, and will include a day of discussion on high school dropout rates and what steps need to be taken to increase graduation rates for young people. The America’s Promise Alliance was formed in 1997 and headed up by General & Mrs. Colin Powell, to help create successful conditions for all young people to succeed in school and life.
