SUMMER GROWTH SPURT

The North Bellmore School District Board of Education, administrators, parents, students and members of the John G. Dinkelmeyer Elementary School community also took time to recognize retiring Principal Faith Skelos at the December 6th meeting.

Many honored Ms. Skelos with words of reflection and praise, along with gifts of heartfelt gratitude for her 26 1/2 years of service to the district including as a teacher and principal.

“I hope you really know the worth of your soul and the people you have

impacted,” Superintendent Ms. Testa said as part of her reflection. “It’s the moments in your life that matter most and you are forever part of the fabric that is Dinkelmeyer school.”

Ms. Skelos will retire, effective December 31, 2018.

Happy People Are “Luckier” My cousin Brandon has always been one of the happiest people I know. He has also been one of the luckiest. He has an uncanny ability to find the humor in everything, to play up his successes and brush off his challenges.

What I have come to realize is that happier people are luckier.

Let’s examine why that is. After all, my cousin has had some less than pleasant events in his life, as we all have. But because he never allowed them to take up too much space, they just seemed to not really matter all that much.

These days, he has a beautiful home, a happy marriage, two children and a thriving legal practice. Yes, he ultimately got pretty lucky, but perhaps some of his good fortune can be credited to his happiness.

I believe that, much like a radio, the frequency he is continuously emitting is positive. Therefore, an overwhelming amount of positive circumstances must show up as a reflection of the signal he is sending out. Picture those rooftop cell phone and radio towers. He’s dialed his station to

LUCKY FM. Some people tend to stay permanently tuned to WOE IS ME FM - Playing the best complaints all day long with few, if any, commercial interruptions.

If I just hit a nerve, that’s okay.

Trust me, I’ve been there and I get it. But if your dial is tuned to WOE IS ME FM, it should not come as a surprise that you feel unlucky, or that your antenna is tuned to pick up things during the day that are bound to frustrate, sadden or annoy you.

If you were to sit at the computer and type questions into Google, like, “Why is life so hard?”

“Why are there bad people in the world?” or “Show me where there are wars, famines, floods and people suffering,” Google could cue up that information for you and provide you with plenty of evidence that life is a scary and unhappy proposition.

Conversely, if you were to Google, “Reasons to feel happy,” “Things to love about being alive,” or “Most beautiful places on earth,” Google can show you results that would reinforce life as joyful and pleasant. As a result,

my hypothesis is as follows: Happy people seem lucky because they feel lucky. Either consciously or unconsciously, they have made a decision to keep their antenna tuned to the people, places, circumstances and events that help to reinforce this lucky feeling. In return, this makes them feel happy, which leads to more of the same. It’s a remarkably genius feedback loop.

Here are four simple steps you can take today to begin to tune your antenna to a happier station: Smile at people as they pass by. Reminise about positive memories - ones that make you laugh and ones that make you feel blessed. Start a gratitude journal just start with five entries a day if that’s less overwhelming. Read or watch something funny each and every day.

You will begin to build up your positive feedback loop and you can add more practices as time goes on. The object of this exercise is to reinforce that happy feeling, re-tune your antenna and one day have someone ask you, “How’d you get so lucky?!”

Their mission is to empower people with disabilities to make their own life choices and to succeed in the communities where they work, live and play. This organization helps these individuals access the support and services they need to become active and productive members of the community, encourages long-term planning to aspire towards meaningful life goals and supports efforts to establish social connections and friendships in the community. Independence Without Isolation is what they aim for as a foundation.

For individuals with disabilities, the movement away from inadequate and segregated institutional congregate custodial care has been taking place for about 40 years. Now more than ever, individuals with disabilities are seeking the opportunity to stay in their own communities and are pursuing their personal goals while receiving the needed levels of support to make full community inclusion a sustainable reality. What is often missing is communitybased, grass roots support networks... the inter-connected social fabric that will secure life-long inclusion for individuals with disabilities as the basic human right that it is!

This non-profit supports initiatives across Long Island. These initiatives are based in venues that are accessible to the community. They aim to create connections between individuals that need support, people that support them (paid staff ), families and loved ones (circles of support), potential employers and businesses, integrated community resources that promote respect and dignity and service providers that support the philosophy of self direction. Some of their initiatives are Big Time GLEE, which is a grass roots singing group that meets every other week; Crafting Connection, which allows individuals to gather every other week to scrapbook, paint, draw and do more crafty

projects and lastly, Mid-Week Meetups, which help people develop friendships based on shared interests and explore new social and recreational opportunities across Long Island! Some other initiatives this organization supports are Nassau Voice, Speed Friending, Yoga Without Boundaries, Emergency Preparedness Classes and the Nature Experience.

Looking to donate? This foundation is collecting donations of crafting supplies to help manage their expenses for the Crafting Connection. You can drop off crafting donations of any kind to their office at 410 Fort Salonga Road, Northport, NY 11768.

Additionally, monetary donations are always welcomed and helpful because they allow this foundation to run more classes and events throughout Long Island. Lastly, they are looking for local venues that can donate some space to their foundation so they can offer more events!

Looking to volunteer? The PBS Community Foundation is currently looking for volunteers to assist in leading their Nassau Voice singing group once a month.

Additionally, volunteers are also needed for various fundraising events throughout the year.

Fifth-grade students in Jane Hodge’s science classes at the East Meadow School District’s Barnum Woods Elementary School recently took part in lessons about the ecosystem. They created their own eco-columns while taking on the responsibility of preserving the environments.

Two of Ms. Hodge’s classes had

the opportunity to create the ecocolumns by constructing three twoliter bottles into a terrarium, an aquarium and a connecting column.

With the terrarium on top, the water used to feed the living and nonliving organisms soaked through the column and into the aquarium to provide fresh water.

ecosystem included snails, guppies, crickets and pill bugs in addition to non-living elements.

“I learned how the ecosystem helps insects like the cricket live and how the cycle of water from the terrarium to the aquarium helps the living and non-living organisms,” said fifth-grader Lexi Elfassy.

North Bellmore Pre-K Registration The North Bellmore School District will once again offer Universal Pre-Kindergarten to district children, contingent upon receiving funing from the New York State Education Department.

Applications are available at the district’s five elementary schools and may be picked up in the main office on school days between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The pre-kindergarten program will begin in September 2019 and run through June 2020 at no cost to selected families or the

school district. Because there are a limited number of available spaces, participants will be selected by lottery. The district would be unable to offer the program if state funding is not received.

Children who will be 4 years old on or before Dec. 1, 2019, and will be eligible to enter kindergarten in the North Bellmore School District in September 2020, are eligible to attend. The Universal Pre-Kindergarten program will take place at local pre-schools. Parents will not have a choice as to location,

and transportation will be the responsibility of the parents.

Applications must be received by Friday, March 15, 2019. There are no exceptions for late applications.

Getting Houses in Order Third-graders learned about the different types of houses across the world during the annual shelters project at Newbridge Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District.

The project was the culmination of a unit on map skills and geography.

Students were assigned different types of houses

from six continents. They learned how people all over the world meet their basic needs through shelter and why houses are built in certain climates.

Students built models of their homes such as loghouses in Europe, pueblos in South America and townhouses in Australia.

Many used recycled materials found

around their own homes, mimicking the way people use the resources available to them to construct shelter. The creations were displayed by continent, showing the vast differences among regions.

The third-graders shared their research and home models as other children from the school and parents visited the showcase.

2019-20 Merrick Kindergarten Registration The Birch, Chatterton, and Norman J. Levy Lakeside elementary schools of the Merrick School District will hold registration for September 2019 kindergarten classes from Monday, February 4, 2019 through Friday, February 8, 2019.

Children who will reach the age of five on or before December 1, 2019, are eligible. To register a child, parents are asked to call their neighborhood school between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to make an appointment. Anyone unsure of their child’s neighborhood school should call the Merrick UFSD Transportation Office at 516.992.7285.

On the day of registration, parents/guardians are required to bring the original birth or baptismal certificate (with a raised seal of either document) and are expected to bring health forms signed by your physician, indicating the completion of all

required immunizations.

Updated immunization requirements can be found on the district website at www.merrick.k12.ny.us In order to substantiate residency, a deed or a lease, a driver’s license and three utility bills (e.g. telephone, PSEG Long Island, National Grid, heating oil and cable/internet bills) must be presented at the appointment.

Parents will receive a packet of paperwork in the mail prior to registration week. When coming to the school for the scheduled meeting, parents must bring the completed packet.

It is not necessary to bring

the child to the registration appointment.

Wantagh Presents “Screenagers” The Wantagh school community gathered for a December 17th screening of the documentary “Screenagers” in the high school auditorium to learn more about the effects of screen time on children and family life. Written by physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston, the awardwinning documentary explores struggles over social media, video games and internet addiction and provides insights from authors, psychologists and brain scientists, while offering solutions on how parents can empower their children to find balance in the digital world.

I am hoping that this documentary leads to more discussion.”

After watching the 68-minute documentary, parents divided into breakout sessions according to their student(s) age(s).

Participants discussed the amount of time their families spend on screen-related activities, whether too much screen time affects learning and memory, whether violent video games desensitize teenagers and ways parents deal with kickback from their children about

wanting more screen time.

Parents also gave valuable advice about how to deal with constant cellphone use, social media issues and rules for screen use.

Superintendent of Schools John C. McNamara said, “What works for me and my family may not work for you. You have to decide your comfort level and have a plan.”

Director of Guidance and Family & Consumer Services Frank Muzio also weighed in on the power of technology and how it affects family time.

Bellmore’s Shore Road School sixth-grade students took to the stage to the delight of parents and peers during the annual talent show held on December 11th. Masters of Ceremony Hudson DiTuri, Athina Malafis, Nicoletta Russo and Giovanni Scimeca introduced each of the acts and the eightmember stage crew was

responsible for keeping the program running smoothly.

Under the direction of music teacher Laura Laude, the night’s diverse entertainment included 16 acts with vocalists who performed popular numbers from “A Bronx Tale,” “Les Miserables” and “Dear Evan Hansen.” There were

also choreographed dance numbers, instrumental performances to popular and classic music and a karate number.

During the dress rehearsal, students cheered for their peers as they practiced their routines.

Practice paid off on opening night as parents applauded their children’s hard work and talent.

You are Dr. Frankenstein’s team of lab assistants.

For months, you’ve been working hard to assemble his creature. Tonight, Dr. Frankenstein has asked you to bring the last three body parts to the top of the castle where lightning will strike and the creature will be brought to life. Sounds easy enough, right? You have a big problem though.

When you got to the lab,

the door swung shut and locked behind you. Find the three remaining body parts and figure out how to unlock the door to meet Dr. Frankenstein on the roof before the lightning strikes!

Hourly time slots at 5, 6, 7 & 8pm will be available through January 11, 2019 for a maximum of 8 people at a time.

Space is limited and registration is necessary.

All ages are welcome (children under 10 must be accompanied by a participating adult).

East Meadow Board Meeting The final East Meadow School District Board of Education meeting of 2018 was one of celebration in the W.T. Clarke High School auditorium on December 19th.

The evening opened with W.T. Clarke High School Principal Timothy Voels and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth A. Card Jr. accepting citations of congratulations from local legislators for the school being named a 2018 National Blue Ribbon School this past October.

In attendance was District 13 Legislator Thomas McKevitt, District 15 Legislator John Ferretti and Assemblyman John

Mikulin. County Executive Laura Curran also sent along a citation of congratulations.

The night continued with the presentation of “Sounds of the Season” by the East Meadow Music Department. Ten musical groups from throughout the district including the Woodland Middle School Vocal Jazz Ensemble, the Barnum Woods and McVey Fifth-Grade Select Orchestra, the W.T. Clarke High School Select Chorale, the East Meadow High School Handbell Choir, the W.T. Clarke Flute Ensemble, the Woodland Seventh-Grade String Quartet, the East Meadow

REACH Music Students, the Combined Rockefeller Center Tube Ensemble, the W.T. Clarke High School Full Chamber Orchestra and the East Meadow All District A Cappella performed holiday classics such as “Joy to the World,” “O Hanukkah,” “Frosty the Snowman” and many more.

The board of education and central administration thanks all the performers and staff for putting together a wonderful holiday celebration.

Special thanks as well to Director of Music and Art Dr. Christopher Hale and the entire East Meadow music and art programs.

Six Steps To Help Students Get Into, And Pay For, College (NAPSI)—Getting into college can seem complicated, even overwhelming—but help is available.

To support students and families, the College Board—the creator of the SAT and Advanced Placement—has launched a first-of-its-kind national scholarship program that serves as a simple college planning guide for all students. It explains what to do and when to do it.

Opportunity Scholarships lay out six simple steps that all students can take to get into college. Completing each step will earn a chance for a scholarship; completing all six will earn students a chance to win $40,000 for their college education.

These six steps help students plan by making a good starter college list, help them prepare so they can take their best shot and help them pay for college: 1. Build a College List—

Students get started by exploring colleges they’re interested in.

2. Practice for the SAT— Students use Official SAT Practice on Khan Academy to help them get ready for test day.

3. Improve SAT Scores— Students show how practice pays off by improving their SAT score.

4. Strengthen College Lists—Students make sure their college list is a mix of academic safety, fit and reach schools.

5. Complete the FAFSA— Students fill out the free government form to apply for financial aid.

6. Apply to Colleges— Students apply to the schools they want to attend.

A Big Difference One thing that makes these scholarships different from other programs is that they’re about how much students grow, not how high they score. They don’t require an essay or an application and don’t have a minimum GPA or SAT

score requirement. Instead, the program rewards all students’ efforts and actions on their way to college. The more effort students put in and actions they complete, the more chances they have to earn a college scholarship.

The College Board is investing $25 million over five years. A total of $5 million is available for each graduating class, beginning with the class of 2020. All students are invited.

www.CB.org/Opportunity and go to BigFuture to create a starter list of six colleges in which they’re interested. Just by making that list, they earn a chance for a $500 scholarship.

Then, they can take the next step toward earning a $40,000 scholarship by going to SATPractice.org to receive free, personalized practice on Khan Academy.
